A perfect storm is brewing across the U.S. power generation fleet. Between 600 and 700 GE 7FA gas turbines installed during the bubble of 2000–2004—plus roughly 900 7EA units worldwide—are simultaneously approaching the OEM's 144,000-hour, 5,000-start end-of-life threshold. Superalloy forgings carry multi-year lead times. Only a handful of shops worldwide can service these machines. And the data center boom is pushing utilization higher than anyone planned for. In this episode, we sit down with three MD&A leaders driving the company's push to become an independent alternative for 7FA and 7EA rotor life extensions: • Dave Fernandes — Gas Turbine Program Manager • Kevin Roy — Principal Engineer, Parts • Jason Wheeler — Gas Turbine Rotor Repairs General Manager We trace the story from MD&A's early-2010s strategic pivot out of steam turbines and into gas turbines under then-CEO John Vanderhoef, through the acquisition of two never-fired machines—a 7FA.03 and a 7EA—that became the foundation of the reverse engineering effort. Kevin Roy explains why zero-hour components were essential, and why CMM and blue-light scanning only get you so far: coatings, shot peening, and surface finishes demand hands-on expertise no laser can replicate. We dig into the global hunt for vendors capable of producing high-temperature alloy forgings and holding tolerances on turbine-section components—a niche capability MD&A continues to expand for supply chain redundancy. Jason Wheeler walks through the quality regime: first-article scrutiny that carries into every production batch, with inspection standards more rigorous than what these vendors typically face elsewhere. The conversation turns to MD&A's seed rotor exchange program—modeled on its successful 7FH2 generator program—designed to compress customer downtime to removal, swap, and reinstall, with returned rotors entering the refurbishment cycle for the next customer. We also unpack what Fernandes calls "the three prongs": fleet-wide timing, multi-year forging lead times, and limited shop capacity worldwide. The conclusion is uncomfortable for operators who haven't started planning—parts needed three to five years from now must enter production today. Finally, we cover the milestone currently in MD&A's St. Louis shop: the first 7FA.03 rotor purchased specifically for the seed rotor program to complete the full production cycle, with newly manufactured wheels stacking perfectly alongside original serviceable components. And we discuss the 2026 delivery of a life-extended 7FA.03 rotor to a leading U.S. power producer—a vote of confidence from a famously risk-averse industry. The military is shooting down drones with a laser, combat action in the Middle East is disrupting commercial flights, former President Biden flies commercial, Breeze Airways continues to expand, and United adds a new passenger requirement to its Contract of Carriage. Plus, more feedback on the Lockheed Constellation, and the passion for flying. Aviation News U.S. House rejects aviation safety bill after Pentagon abruptly withdraws support When we talked about the ROTOR Act last week, we explained that the Senate unanimously passed the bill requiring ADS-B In and that a House vote was scheduled. Before the House vote, the Pentagon withdrew its support, saying that the bill could create “unresolved budgetary burdens and operational security risks.” The bill failed to meet the required two-thirds majority: 264 in favor and 133 opposed, with more than 130 Republicans voting against it. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Ala., the chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said, “This bill will undermine our national security. Requiring our fighters and bombers and highly classified assets to regularly broadcast their location puts our men and women in uniform at risk.” Rep. Sam Graves, R-Mo., the chairman of the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, called the ROTOR Act an “unworkable government mandate” that would be “burdensome” to some pilots. ALERT Act Aviation Safety Bill Introduced in U.S. House . Graves and Rogers put their support behind their own bipartisan bill, known as the ALERT Act, or Airspace Location and Enhanced Risk Transparency Act. It is broader, more process‑driven, and relies more on future FAA rulemaking. The ROTOR Act uses mandates and concentrates on collision‑avoidance and traffic‑awareness, especially mandatory ADS‑B In equipage for aircraft operating near airports, plus related airspace reviews and military‑civil coordination.​ The ALERT Act uses rulemaking to implement essentially all ~50 NTSB recommendations from the DCA midair, including tech, ATC staffing/training, helicopter routes, DCA‑specific procedures, and FAA safety culture reforms. Military Laser Downs CBP Drone, Tiny TFR Established When Federal Agencies Start Shooting at Each Other's Drones, We Have a Real Airspace Problem The Defence Department has a laser weapon that can shoot down drones. Recently, a TFR closed the airspace in El Paso due to a drone downing. Now, Congress has been briefed that along the Mexican border at Fort Hancock, Texas, a Defense Department laser weapon shot down a Customs and Border Protection drone. In response, the FAA issued a TFR for that area. In a statement, three lawmakers said, “Our heads are exploding over the news that DoD reportedly shot down a Customs and Border Protection drone using a high-risk counter-unmanned aircraft system.” Also, “We said MONTHS ago that the White House's decision to sidestep a bipartisan, tri-committee bill to appropriately train C-UAS operators and address the lack of coordination between the Pentagon, DHS and the FAA was a short-sighted idea. Now, we're seeing the result of its incompetence.” Hundreds of thousands of travelers stranded by flight disruptions after attack on Iran Military combat in Iran and the surrounding region has forced the diversion and cancellation of flights. Airspace was closed by Israel, Qatar, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, and Bahrain. The United Arab Emirates announced a “temporary and partial closure” of its airspace. Reportedly, hundreds of thousands of travelers were impacted and either stranded or diverted to other airports. Important hub airports in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha were closed. Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad typically move about 90,000 passengers per day through those hubs. Three US Fighter Jets Accidentally Shot Down by Kuwaiti Air Defenses On 1 March 2026, three USAF F‑15E Strike Eagles were shot down over Kuwait by Kuwaiti air-defense systems during combat operations against Iran. U.S. Central Command described it as an apparent friendly‑fire incident; all six crew members ejected and were recovered. United Threatens To Kick Off Passengers Who Don't Use Headphones United Airlines has added a new passenger requirement to Rule 21 Refusal of Transport in its Contract of Carriage. Item 22 reads, “Passengers who fail to use headphones while listening to audio or video content.” Under the Contract of Carriage, “UA shall have the right to refuse transport on a permanent or temporary basis or shall have the right to remove from the aircraft at any point, any Passenger…” for the stated reasons. In Part 2, Ian Wookey takes us inside daily flying with 450 Tactical Helicopter Squadron, sharing what it's like to operate the CH-147F Chinook in challenging environments. He talks about crew coordination, tactical missions, mountain flying, and the training and experience required to upgrade from First Officer to Aircraft Commander in Canada's heavy-lift helicopter community. 

In Part 1, pilot Ian Wookey walks us through the formative years that made him a Chinook aviator - from varsity life at RMC and initial flight training on the Grob, to the intensity of the Harvard II course in Moose Jaw and the humbling challenge of helicopter phase training. Ian reflects on early on-the-job roles, an unexpected deployment to Afghanistan with a special operations aviation detachment, and how those experiences shaped his choice to fly rotary-wing aircraft. He closes by describing the nerve-wracking moment of selection for the CH-147F Chinook and what it felt like to join 450 Tactical Helicopter Squadron.

Her plans were disrupted when the Imperial Japanese Army invaded and occupied the Philippines. Unable to access her Philippine government scholarship to attend Johns Hopkins, she joined the Ordnance Development Division at the National Bureau of Standards. It was here that she did groundbreaking research on the proximity fuze, the “world's first ‘smart' weapon,” in the words of physicist Frank Belknap Baldwin, who also helped develop the technology.
