In Episode 397 Jeff Belanger and Ray Auger explore the woods of North Jay, Vermont, searching for the ruins of Space Research Corporation. In the 1970s and 80s, Dr. Gerald Bull was attempting to build a cannon that could launch satellites into space much cheaper and more efficiently than rockets. The only problem was his funding came from various militaries who only saw the cannon's use as a weapon. Once international dictators got involved… things turned deadly. Today we're left wondering what could have been.

This week, Maggie and Maddy welcome comedian, innovator, leader and friend, Brian DLB, into the studio to learn about a fascinating piece of Vermont history. I'm not going to spoil anything here but just know that big guns and Saddam Hussein are deeply involved. Plus, weekend plans, bodily functions, and of course a sports update (boys only).
Episode 231: Gerald Vincent Bull was a smart cookie from North Bay, Ontario. He graduated from the University of Toronto at 20, got a master's degree at age 21, and at 22 earned a Ph.D. in aeronautical engineering from the University of Toronto's newly created Institute of Aerodynamics. Magazines touted him the ‘boy rocket scientist'. Nations sought him for his innovative ideas regarding long range artillery, ballistics and other military related endeavours. He was charged several times with breaching arms embargoes, even spending time in prison, a sore spot for the proud scientist. Eventually he became involved in Iraq's ‘Project Babylon' in which he was asked personally by then Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein to build a Supergun which would launch weapons into space, giving Hussein the capability of bombing targets 1000's of kilometres away. This obviously worried Iraq's neighbours in the Middle East. Before the project was completed Gerald Bull was assassinated, shot five times outside his apartment building in Brussels, Belgium. A lot of nations hated Gerald Bull and some, no doubt, wanted him dead, but it remains a mystery who was behind his killing. It isn't clear who actually pulled the trigger in the murder of Gerald Bull, most likely it was someone either within, or acting on behalf of, one of those governments who'd felt threatened by Bull's activities and alliances. Gerald Bull had been developing “super guns” for decades, culminating in his work for the Iraqi government of Saddam Hussein. Assassinated in 1990, it is unclear if Bull was killed by the Israelis, the Iranians, some other covert agency … or by the Iraqis themselves. This episode is brought to you by Omio.
Somebody killed Gerald Bull, one of the most maverick weapons designers the world has ever known. But who? Turns out there are a lot of people with motive and not a lot of evidence for whodunnit.
An insider's account of Project Babylon, the plan to build the largest gun in the world for Saddam Hussein's Iraq. The "Supergun" was the brainchild of Canadian artillery maverick, Dr Gerald Bull. He'd long wanted to build a gun capable of launching satellites into space. In the 1980s Saddam Hussein agreed to fund this plan. But was it a science project or a weapon? In 1990, the "Supergun" hit the headlines and it became an international scandal. Alex Last spoke to Chris Cowley an engineer who worked on Project Babylon,. Appropriately enough he has also become an author of thrillers. His latest book is called Without A Shadow. Photo: UN inspectors visit the site of the 350mm (baby) Super Gun in Iraq. After the Gulf War, the gun components were broken up and destroyed.(UN)

Episode 19 of the Joe and Mike vs. the Future podcast. In this podcast, we discussed the founding and recent bankruptcy of Mars One, the "company" that promised to fund a 1-way mars colonization with a reality TV show. One correction: Gerald Bull was assassinated in Brussels, not Dubai. This episode of the podcast features two guests, Zach and Kelly Weinersmith. Zach is the author of SMBC Comics, a popular webcomic that sometimes deals with advanced concepts in science, philosophy, economics, and other fields. Kelly is a professor in the Biosciences department of Rice University. Together they co-authored Soonish: Ten Emerging Technologies That'll Improve and/or Ruin Everything. To quote the book's description, In this smart and funny book, celebrated cartoonist Zach Weinersmith and noted researcher Dr. Kelly Weinersmith give us a snapshot of what's coming next--from robot swarms to nuclear fusion powered-toasters. By weaving their own research, interviews with the scientists who are making these advances happen, and Zach's trademark comics, the Weinersmiths investigate why these technologies are needed, how they would work, and what is standing in their way. In this fun and lively conversation, we discuss some of the technologies discussed in the book: space elevators, asteroid mining, augmented reality, and programmable matter. We also discuss the tragic life of Gerald Bull, Canadian space cannon enthusiast.
Canadian Dr. Gerald Bull had a lifelong dream to build a Super Gun, one that could shoot scientific instrument into outer space. It began in 1961, and for almost 30 years he tried to make his dream come true. In 1990, it looked as if he might actually build it but it was for the wrong people. Comics have emerged as a key means of interpreting and disseminating controversial and contested histories: Chester Brown’s Louis Riel, Keiji Nakazawa’s Barefoot Gen, Joe Sacco’s Palestine, and Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis are just some of the works that take definitive social and political conflict as their topic. Why has historical material become so important for comics art? What unique opportunities does comics allow for critiquing and revising dominant historical narratives? These are the questions our speakers discussed, in relation to their own work and to the comics world in general. Diana Tamblyn is writing a biography of Canadian arms trader and weapons engineer Gerald Bull; Ho Che Anderson authored King, a 3-volume biography of MLK; and Jeet Heer is a historian and a leading comics scholar.
