One bad seed can ruin everything. In this episode, part of a special SANSOR campaign, we unpack why seed certification matters more than you might think. Across Africa, many farmers unknowingly plant uncertified or poor-quality seed—jeopardising their harvests, their incomes, and their futures.Thabiso Ntsele, certification technician at the South African National Seed Organisation (SANSOR), joins us to explain how farmers can spot the difference between certified and uncertified seed. He breaks down the certification process, why it's a legal safeguard for seed quality, and how choosing the right seed could be the most important farming decision you make this season.

This week's message draws from Exodus 1 and 2, focusing on the powerful story of Moses' birth and the remarkable women who defied Pharaoh's deadly command. From the brave Hebrew midwives Shiphrah and Puah, to Moses' mother Jochebed and sister Miriam, and even Pharaoh's own daughter—women moved by compassion and moral courage came together to protect life in a time of genocide.Pastor Kirt reminds us that God often works through ordinary people who carry extraordinary love, especially mothers. These women stood up against the power of death with the power of life, embodying values that transcend culture, time, and even religion—compassion, justice, and courage. The sermon also reflects on the emotional depth and sacrificial nature of motherhood, from personal stories of parental love to the heartbreak of watching a loved one fade from memory. Through it all, we are reminded that love—especially a mother's love—has the power to change hearts, protect life, and reflect the very character of God.We honor and remember the mothers who have shaped us, sacrificed for us, and loved us deeply. May we live in a way that honors their legacy.

Shout out to Earl Estep. This weekend, I will be at the Men of Honor Conference in Sacramento, CA. I am excited to be with you and your men. Welcome to The Daily, where we go through the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every single day. Today, we're looking at Ecclesiastes 10:1: Dead flies make the perfumer's ointment give off a stench; so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor. — Ecclesiastes 10:1 The Little Things Matter Imagine a master perfumer crafting a bottle of the finest fragrance. Every ingredient is carefully measured, blended with skill, and designed to create something valuable. But then—just one small fly falls in. It decays, contaminates the entire mixture, and what was once desirable now stinks. That's the picture Solomon gives us. A little foolishness can destroy a lifetime of wisdom and honor. It doesn't take much—a careless word, a moment of compromise, a lapse in judgment—and suddenly, the fragrance of a godly reputation is tainted. A Little Folly, A Big Cost History is full of men who built something great but lost it all over one foolish decision. King David—a man after God's own heart—allowed a moment of lust with Bathsheba to bring chaos into his household. Judas Iscariot walked with Jesus, saw His miracles, and heard His wisdom—yet for a few silver coins, he threw it all away. Folly doesn't need to be grand; even a little can cause great damage. Guarding Against the Stench So, how do we keep dead flies out of the ointment of our lives? ☑️ Watch the Small Compromises – What seems insignificant today can become destructive tomorrow. ☑️ Surround Yourself with Wise People – The right people will call you out before a small mistake becomes a disaster. ☑️ Stay Humble and Dependent on God – The moment we think we're immune to folly is when we become vulnerable to it. So here's the question you need to ask yourself today: What “small flies” in your life could contaminate your testimony? Let's pray: Lord, help me to walk in wisdom and avoid even the slightest compromises. Keep me from folly, and let my life be a fragrance that honors You. Amen. #WisdomMatters, #GuardYourHeart, #FaithfulLiving ASK THIS: What small compromises in your life could lead to bigger problems if left unchecked? Who in your circle holds you accountable to wise living? How can you be more intentional about guarding your testimony? What practical step can you take today to remove “dead flies” from your life? DO THIS: Examine your daily habits and identify one small compromise that could lead to bigger consequences—then make a change today. PRAY THIS: Lord, help me to walk in wisdom and guard my heart against even the smallest compromises. Let my life be a fragrance that brings You glory. Amen. PLAY THIS: Yes I Will.

Weeds' Nancy Botwin began the show as a very sympathetic figure – newly widowed and left to figure out how to keep her family afloat while struggling with her own grief. But over the course of the show's 8 seasons, a different, darker side of Nancy made itself more and more apparent. She remained entertaining to watch, but became harder and harder to side with. By leaning into her anti-hero nature, instead of pulling back and softening her edges, the show managed to create a portrait of a complex, messy woman and the more sinister sides of her personality that cause her to harm everyone around her in her quest for more. Protestantism gets blamed for a lot of things: rampant individualism, denigration of authority, deviation from tradition, and the disenchantment of the world. But is this the true story of the Reformation? Michael Lynch from the Davenant Institute begs to differ. We talk about the theological and political underpinnings of the Reformation as well as the philosophical shifts in society that affected both Protestants and Catholics. We also talk about the contribution of Protestants to art, music, and aesthetics by looking to the post-Reformation era, specifically the Reformed scholastics. In this episode of the Thought Leadership Leverage podcast, host Bill Sherman dives into the realities of space settlement with Kelly Weinersmith, biologist and adjunct assistant professor at Rice University, and Zach Weinersmith, comic artist and author. Known for their book "Soonish: Ten Emerging Technologies That'll Improve and/or Ruin Everything," the Weinersmiths have recently released "A City on Mars: Can We Settle Space, Should We Settle Space, and Have We Really Thought This Through?"—a book that raises tough questions about the feasibility and ethics of colonizing new worlds. The episode uncovers some hard truths behind the idea of settling space. While space exploration seems exciting and full of promise, the Weinersmiths caution that many of the technological, biological, and social challenges remain unsolved. In their book, they explore whether the dream of building new worlds in space is achievable or could lead to unexpected consequences. Kelly and Zach discuss the evolution of their book's thesis—from an optimistic view of imminent space settlement to a more nuanced, realistic perspective. They reveal how their research journey influenced this shift, sharing the complexities of dealing with sensitive topics and the mixed reactions they received from the space community. While some experts supported their critical approach, others reacted with resistance and disappointment. The episode also touches on the importance of humor in science communication. The Weinersmiths explain how humor helps make complex ideas more accessible and engaging. Their book, filled with witty illustrations and anecdotes, balances deep scientific insights with a lighthearted touch, providing a unique take on the question of space colonization. Bill and his guests explore the broader implications of space settlement, examining potential issues such as the environmental impact, the governance of space colonies, and the psychological effects of living in confined, isolated environments. The conversation also highlights the importance of empirical evidence and the rigorous research methods employed by the Weinersmiths, who sought input from a wide range of experts to build a comprehensive view of space settlement's challenges and opportunities. Tune in to this thought-provoking episode for a deep dive into the reality of space exploration, the impact of metaphor on our understanding of complex concepts, and the role of humor in making science accessible. Whether you're a CEO, leadership coach, entrepreneur, or thought leader, you'll find valuable insights into why space settlement might be more complicated than it seems—and why a critical perspective is essential as we look to the stars. Three Key Takeaways: • The Challenges of Space Settlement Are Complex and Multidisciplinary Kelly and Zach Weinersmith's book, "A City on Mars," explores the myriad challenges of space settlement, from technological to biological, psychological, and legal issues. Their extensive research reveals that many unresolved questions make the idea of colonizing Mars or other celestial bodies far more complex than it might seem. They underscore that successful space settlement requires significant advancements in multiple fields, and many assumptions about its feasibility may not hold up under scrutiny. • Humor as a Tool for Science Communication The Weinersmiths demonstrate the importance of humor in making complex scientific topics accessible and engaging. They explain how humor can be used to break down barriers and keep audiences interested, even when discussing dense subjects like space law or the psychological effects of isolation. By weaving humor into their work, they make the science approachable while still maintaining accuracy and depth. • The Impact of Metaphors on Perception The guests discuss how metaphors can shape our understanding of complex concepts like space exploration. Zach Weinersmith points out that metaphors, like the "wagon train in space" analogy from Star Trek, can both guide and limit our perception of what space settlement entails. This observation underscores the importance of critically examining the stories and metaphors we use to describe emerging technologies and scientific endeavors, as they can influence public opinion and expectations.

When Kelly and Zach Weinersmith proposed a book on colonizing Mars, they had no idea that halfway through their research they'd change their position. Their title says it all: A City on Mars: Can We Settle Space, Should We Settle Space, and Have We Really Thought This Through? What happens when two people who eschew conflict find themselves in a position of dashing people's dreams about space? In this light-hearted episode we talk about their research process, how they organized crazy amounts of information, their collaborative processes, negotiating critique with each other, how to make hard science more accessible and palatable to the public and how humor helps everything. Dr. Kelly Weinersmith received her PhD in Ecology at the University of California Davis, and is an adjunct faculty member in the BioSciences Department at Rice University. Kelly studies parasites that manipulate the behavior of their hosts, and her research has been featured in The Atlantic, National Geographic, BBC World, Science, and Nature. Sean Carroll's Mindscape: Science, Society, Philosophy, Culture, Arts, and Ideas
There is an undeniable romance in the idea of traveling to, and even living in, outer space. In recent years, a pragmatic justification has become increasingly popular: the Earth is vulnerable to threats both natural and human-made, and it seems only prudent to spread life to other locations in case a disaster befalls our home planet. But how realistic is such a grand ambition? The wife-and-husband team of Kelly and Zack Weinersmith have tackled this question from a dizzying number of angles, from aeronautics and biology to law and psychology. The result is their new book, A City on Mars: Can We Settle Space, Should We Settle Space, and Have We Really Thought This Through? It provides an exceptionally clear-eyed view of the challenges and opportunities ahead.Blog post with transcript: https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/podcast/2023/11/13/256-kelly-and-zach-weinersmith-on-building-cities-on-the-moon-and-mars/Support Mindscape on Patreon.Kelly Weinersmith received a Ph.D. in ecology from the University of California, Davis.
