The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Sansa flees the scene of the crime with Ser Dontos. After a scary climb she's rowed to deliverance - which turns out to come with a familiar (although not totally friendly) face. Simon and Mackelly consider her future.Chapter Review:Sansa Stark races to the Godswood where she has hidden a change of clothes. When she takes her hair net off, she realizes a black amethyst is missing and gets a sinking feeling in her stomach that it's somehow related to King Joffrey's death. Dontos arrives and denies that the hair net had anything to do with Joff's death. He choked on pie.Dontos leads her out of the castle to a cliff where a secret ladder has been cut out of the stone that leads to the river below. When the pair make down safely, they find a man waiting to row them out to safety. When the little boat reaches a ship, a stunned Sansa discovers Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish waiting for her. Dontos, who stayed behind to row himself back to the castle, asks for his reward of 10,000 gold dragons. Instead, he's killed by three crossbow bolts.Littlefinger explains to a highly-upset Sansa that Dontos did what he did at Littlefinger's command and did so because he was being handsomely paid. Once he'd drunk this payday, he'd sell Sansa again to Varys or Cersei. When Sansa asks why Littlefinger would want to hurt the Lannisters, who gave him so much, he responds that he had no motive. He likes to keep his foes confused. He says he loved Sansa's mother Catelyn and thinks in a different world Sansa might've been his daughter. He tells Sansa to forget about the Lannisters, Tyrion, and King's Landing. She's safe with him and sailing home.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Sansa Stark - Elder daughter of Ned and Catelyn Stark. Forcibly married to Tyrion.Ser Dontos Hollard - Drunken jester of King Joffrey, but friend to Sansa.Lord Petyr Baelish - Former member of the Small Council, now lord of Harrenhal. Understood to be in the Vale seeking an alliance with Lysa Arryn.Tyrion Lannister - Youngest son of Tywin Lannister. Brother to queen Cersei and Jamie Lannister. Master of Coin.

Bran and company are hiding in the crypts of Winterfell. They venture out to find the castle destroyed and Maester Luwin mortally wounded. Mackelly and Simon sort through the debris.Chapter Review:Bran Stark sees and smells the destruction of Winterfell through the eyes of Summer. He's been in wolf form for three days, but Osha, Hodor, Rickon and the Reeds are waiting for, and on, him in the crypts beneath Winterfell. With what he's learned, the party decides to venture forth - they need food anyway.Only Hodor has the strength to move the door which is blocked by rubble. The destruction is wanton and considerable: horses, dogs, and people lie dead everywhere. Bran blames Theon Greyjoy, but Osha suspects that the "Squid Prince" might have been a victim here too. Rickon doesn't recognize it as his home. But he does recognize the direwolves who come trotting up. The wolves scent something and head for the Godswood. There they find Maester Luwin on the edge of death. He counsels Osha to split the boys up. Take Rickon to the King's Road and Bran to the Wall. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Bran enjoys the Reeds' company. Jojen reveals that he has the greensight allowing him to dream of the future. He offers to trade dreams with Bran. Things get tense and Summer threatens the Reeds. They avoid the wolves and later Meera shares another of Jojen's dreams with Bran. Mackelly and Simon have a go at oneirocriticism. Chapter Review: Brandon Stark is enjoying the company of Meera and Jojen Reed. The other northern dignitaries have left, and the three are frolicking with Summer in the Godswood. Meera shows her skill with trident and net. Bran shows off his and Summer's circus-stunts. Jojen reveals that he has the greensight: his dreams are prophecies. Bran wants to know his future, but Jojen wants to hear about Bran's own dreams. Jojen knows a surprising amount already. The three-eyed raven has visited him since he nearly succumbed to a fever as a child. Jojen's dream is of a winged-wolf shackled to earth by stone chains, that the raven cannot cut. Jojen knows that Bran can inhabit Summer, but this all gets too close to home for Bran. Summer, and later Shaggydog, attack the Reeds, who are lucky to be good tree-climbers. We learn that Roose Bolton's bastard son has kidnapped and married the widow Hornwood. This has been countered by Lord Manderly occupying the Hornwood lands and castles. Ser Rodrik has gone to knock some heads together. Maester Luwin dismisses greensight as a forgotten fable, that if it ever existed, is long gone. His own experiments with magic proved (to him) that it doesn't exist. Bran is relieved and disappointed. If magic did exist he could still hope for a cure to his paralysis. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Brandon (Bran) Stark - Middle son of Eddard (Ned) and Catelyn (Cat) Stark. He was pushed from a tower by Jamie Lannister and lost the use of his legs. Maester Luwin - A maester in the service of house Stark at Winterfell. Big Walder Frey - Grandson of Lord Walder Frey. Ward of Winterfell. Little Walder Frey - Grandson of Lord Walder Frey. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Sansa rendezvous with a would-be rescuer. Her Florian is not quite who she'd imagined but he'll have to do. On the way back, she bumps into Sandor Clegane drunk as a lord (the Hound, not Sansa). He tells her that a dog can always smell a lie, and she's the worst liar in King's Landing. Mackelly and Simon consider the canine polygraph test. Chapter Review: Sansa Stark has received a note telling her to come to the Godswood if she wants to go home. She's uncertain, but she really wants to go home. A maid almost spots the note, which Sansa then burns. She bides her time and sneaks out when the coast is clear. She imagines it will be some handsome knight determined to free her and right the wrongs. It turns out to be drunken Ser Dontos Hollard. She's not impressed. But he gives an impassioned speech about how she reminded him of what a true knight should be, and that he's determined to repay her by getting her home. He compares himself to Florian, the legendary knight who wooed Jonquil. Sansa is swept away and agrees to Dontos' as yet unfinished plans. On the walk back, she bumps into a drunken Hound. He escorts her back across the drawbridge into Maegor's holdfast. He says that he'll have a song from her eventually, and she agrees to sing for him one day. He calls her a liar and tells her that everyone in King's Landing is a liar and she is the worst of them. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Bran is seeking to understand the meaning of both the comet and the incessant howling of the direwolves. There are lots of opinions. He's increasingly in sync with his direwolf. When he dreams, he doesn't just dream of being a wolf, he sees through Summer's eyes. Mackelly and Simon ponder the implications. Chapter Review: Nobody can sleep because Shaggydog and Summer howl all night. The direwolves are confined to the Godswood, and aren't happy about it. The Winterfell cast all have an opinion as to why the wolves are howling, none of which are much use. Similarly the chorus all have a theory about the comet - but again, it's just hot air (well apart from Old Nan who is unerringly accurate: “Dragons!”, but nobody believes her). The two Walder Freys have arrived (fostered as part of the Twins-crossing deal with their grandfather Walder). They are rambunctious and fun. One of their games led to Rickon getting knocked down, and Shaggydog bit a Walder. This incident had two effects: the wolves were banished to the Godswood, and Rickon became firm friends with the Walders. Bran's given a sleeping draught to get him through the night, but still dreams he's Summer. He prowls the walls of the Godswood, looking for a way out. Bran feels, but doesn't fully understand, the urgent desire to get out. Something compels the direwolves to be free. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Brandon (Bran) Stark - Middle son of Eddard (Ned) and Catelyn (Cat) Stark. He was pushed from a tower by Jamie Lannister and lost the use of his legs. Rickon Stark - Youngest son of Eddard (Ned) and Catelyn (Cat) Stark. At Winterfell. Summer - The direwolf of Bran Stark. Shaggydog - The direwolf of Rickon Stark. Maester Luwin - A maester in the service of house Stark at Winterfell. Hodor - A huge but simple man who carries Bran Stark wherever he wishes to go. Big Walder Frey - Grandson of Lord Walder Frey. Ward of Winterfell. Little Walder Frey - Grandson of Lord Walder Frey. Ward of Winterfell. Osha - Wildling captured by the Starks, now held as servant/prisoner in Winterfell. Ser Rodrik Cassel - Master-at-arms of Winterfell. Aging knight who accompanied Cat on her journey to King's Landing. Mikken - Blacksmith at Winterfell. Septon Chayle - Septon of Winterfell. Thanks to Tommy Arnold for the beautiful illustration of Ned confronting Cersei in the Godswood. You can see more of his work here! https://www.instagram.com/tommyarnoldart/These chapters are Eddard, Sansa, and Eddard. These are the chapters in which Eddard decides that he's going to attempt to be merciful, and warn Cersei that she's about to be disgraced so that she can flee the city with her children. He really just does not know who he's dealing with. Meanwhile, Sansa is in deep denial about who Joffrey really is, even though a part of her seems to know that he's dangerous and terrible. It's awful to watch her gaslight her sister and cling to this fantasy of what life would be like if she got to stay at the Red Keep. I am dreading what comes next. Thank you all so much for listening, and for bearing with us with all the technical issues we've been having. We love you! See you next week!
The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Cat and company arrive in Riverrun to find Lord Hoster Tully on his deathbed. With both Baratheon brothers vying to take the throne from their nephew, the Northern lords don't know who to support. The Greatjohn Umber has a creative solution, and declares Robb the King in the North to general approval. The boys dip their lances and consider bending the knee. Chapter Review: Catelyn re-enters Riverrun, where she grew up, for the first time in years. She's escorted to her father's rooms by her brother Edmure, recently freed from captivity in Jamie Lannister's host. Lord Hoster is near death but is glad to receive Cat. He's less thrilled to hear that his brother has come home. The old guy still has smouldering animosity for Brynden, and a fondness for his first grandson Robb. Cat finds Robb praying with the northern lords in the Godswood, where she played as a child. He's too busy to see his grandpa, as news has arrived that Renly Baratheon has wed Margery Tyrell and claimed the Iron Throne. With Tywin Lannister retreating to Harrenhal, the path forward for the northern army is not clear. Stannis has the better claim, but Renly has more (i.e., some) charisma. When it feels like the discussion is going, nowhere the GreatJohn Umber rises and dismisses all these southern kings, they mean nothing to him. The only king he'd follow is Robb Stark: the King in the North. All agree. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Robb Stark - Eldest son of Eddard (Ned) and Catelyn (Cat) Stark. Catelyn Stark - Lady of Winterfell. Wife of Lord Eddard Stark and daughter of Hoster Tully, the Lord Paramount of the Riverlands. Hoster Tully - Lord of Riverrun. Father to Catelyn Stark, Edmure Tully, and Lysa Arryn. Old and in poor health. Edmure Tully - Heir to Riverrun. Brother to Catelyn Stark. Brynden “Blackfish” Tully - Brother of Hoster Tully, uncle to Catelyn Stark. Formerly Knight of the Gate in the Vale. Theon Greyjoy - Ward and hostage of Eddard Stark. Only surviving son of Balon Greyjoy, and heir to the Iron Islands. Lord John “The Greatjohn” Umber - Lord of Last Hearth - huge. Lost two fingers to Grey Wind, now fiercely loyal to Robb Stark. Jamie Lannister - Member of the royal Kingsguard. Twin brother to queen Cersei and older brother to Tyrion. Nicknamed the "Kingslayer" for killing King Aerys Targaryen. Stannis Baratheon - Eldest brother of dead King Robert Baratheon. At Dragonstone. Renly Baratheon - Youngest brother of dead King Robert Baratheon. Bran watches the Karstarks arrive at Winterfell. He talks to Osha, who warns him of the Others and assures him that the danger to their safety is not from King's Landing, but from north of the Wall. Nevertheless, the Stark banners head south to defend the Riverlands and hopefully rescue Ned. The boys try to see things through Bran's eyes (all three of them). Chapter Review: Bran watches as the Karstarks swell the numbers at Winterfell to 12,000 soldiers. Robb's headed south to protect the Riverlands, find his mom, and hopefully rescue his father and sisters from the clutches of Queen Cersei. This despite receiving word from Sansa that Robb and their mother should could to King's Landing and bend the knee. In the Godswood with Hodor's, Bran encounters Osha the wildling. She assures Bran that Robb and his army should be heading north. Whatever his concern is with the south, it's nothing compared to what's coming from the north. Bran promises to convince Robb. But he doesn't get the chance. Robb is busy convincing the hard northern Lords to follow a green boy of summer, with some help from Grey Wind. Bran confides in Maester Luwin, but the old man assures Bran that Osha's stories are fanciful. A couple of days later the armies head south, leaving Bran in charge of Winterfell. They bring them back to Castle Black for examination, but Othor's story is not quite done yet. Jon and Ghost save Lord Commander Mormont, which is a good job, because Jon had been very naughty. The boys discuss Jon's failings. Chapter Review: Jon, Sam, and the senior members of the Night's Watch find the bodies that Ghost discovered. They are rangers from Benjen Stark's party. Sam goes all CSI: They seem to have been dead a while, but they haven't rotted. Mormont is troubled and wants Maester Aemon to examine them, despite the misgivings of some of the men. When they return to Castle Black, a raven has brought news of Robert's death and Eddard Stark's treason. Ser Alliser mock's Jon as not only a bastard but the bastard-son of a traitor. Jon loses his temper and his liberty. But in the night, Ghost wakes Jon. Something is amiss. They trace the trouble to Mormont's quarters, where Othor is up and about - and up to no good. In Episode 3 of the Obsidian Nights Podcast we get into Catelyn's head as she visits the Godswood at Winterfell to bring Ned Stark grievous news.
A scorpion, a dragon and two queens walk into a bar… We say goodbye to the fallen and proceed to the next team building event hosted by Cersi. Team leader Dany racks up on all the Ls while Jon releases a not so secret secret. I tell you what I think of the Bran/Tyrion pairing this season and what I expect to see in the next couple of episodes. mswatchitall@gmail.com Twitter: @MsWatchItAll1
The Dead arrive at Winterfell and relentlessly slaughter the defenders, pushing their way over the walls. Before all hell breaks loose Melisandre arrives, sets the Dothraki's arakhs ablaze, inspiring them all to charge off and die instantly. This alarms Daenerys, who takes to the air with Drogon to go burn some baddies. What follows is a confused, hazy, dark slog of death and defeat. Jon and Daenerys engage the Night King on dragonback in mid air, enveloped by snowstorm. Lyanna Mormont and Beric die heroically in grim scenes. Arya kicks ass for a while, then gets a bump on the noggin and starts skulking in fear, until Melisandre finds her and cryptically inspires her to go kill something with blue eyes. Jon knocks the Night King off Viserion to the ground, Drogon gives him a full face of dragon flame, but he smirks it off. Jon races to take on The Night King on foot, who raises the slain Winterfell defenders to swarm Jon. The Night King then strolls on into the Godswood, where Theon has been quickly running out of arrows defending Bran. Inside the crypt folks sit grimly until the dead start popping out of the tombs, but nobody recognizable dies. After Daenerys is pulled from Drogon by swarming dead soldiers, Jorah dies defending her. The Night King kills Theon, casually strolls over to Bran, leisurely reaches for his sword, and out of nowhere Arya leaps on him, does a trick with her Valyrian steel dagger and stabs him. All the baddies drop dead for good. Melisandre walks away from Winterfell, drops her necklace, then her robe, then she too dies. Ultimately the long night wasn't that long.
The third episode of Game of Thrones Season 8 was as epic as we hoped. With an 82 minute running time, it was the longest episode in the final season. There was good reason for it, as it was one of the bloodiest battles in the show’s history and too good fit in an hour. David Benioff and Dan Weiss know what the fans want and they delivered with an episode that reportedly took 55 days to shoot. The Living Army meets the Army of the Dead outside of Winterfell, but are quickly overwhelmed by the dead's superior numbers. The entire Dothraki army is decimated, and Edd is killed after saving Sam. The living retreat into the castle while Melisandre uses her magic to ignite the protective fire trench surrounding Winterfell to delay the advancing horde. Jon and Daenerys, riding Rhaegal and Drogon, engage the Night King on Viserion. After breaching the fire trench, the dead soldiers attack Winterfell, scaling its walls. The defenders are swiftly overwhelmed and scattered, with Lyanna Mormont and Beric dying in the fight. Melisandre helps Arya realize her destiny to defy the God of Death this day. Jon knocks the Night King off Viserion onto the ground where Daenerys commands Drogon to burn him, but without effect. The Night King raises the slain Winterfell defenders as his fighters, including those entombed in the crypts who then attack the sheltering civilians. After Daenerys is pulled from Drogon by swarming dead soldiers, Jorah is mortally wounded defending her. The Night King arrives at the Godswood for Bran, and kills Theon as he bravely protects Bran. Arya leaps onto the Night King, who turns and grabs her by the throat, but she stabs him with her Valyrian steel dagger. The Night King and his wights disintegrate, and the Army of the Dead falls. With her purpose served, Melisandre wanders away from Winterfell and dies from her advanced age.
Lord Ben of House Garrett and Maester Daniel are back to recap the second episode of the final season of Game of Thrones. Is Daenerys being positioned as the show's ultimate big bad? Who will die in the battle of Winterfell? Is Qyburn working with Varys? Does Jenny's Song (Jenny of Oldstones) foreshadow the fate of Dany and Jon? What is the importance of the Godswood? We have some post-Easter horror for you this week, thanks to Netflix's excellent new haunted heart thriller, Chambers, some pre-millennial spycraft thanks to The Looming Tower on BBC2, plus we fail to watch Jamestown entirely and have to rely on Boyd to explain it all. All that and another bumper dragoncast, getting deep into the Godswood for episode 2 of Game Of Thrones' final season. If you're still trying to avoid Westerosi spoilers for that particular episode then don't worry, it's clearly signposted and at the very end of the show between 01:19:50 and 01:49:50. Apologies for the runtime - we got a bit carried away!
Jaime is more or less put on trial for murdering Daenerys' father, but Brienne vouches for him, and Sansa says 'as long as we got a voucher'. Jaime later apologizes to Bran for pushing him out the window, but Bran says 'whatevs'. Tyrion is in the doghouse with Daenerys for being outsmarted by Cersei, but Jorah vouches for him. Daenerys tries to bond with Sansa over their mutual affection for for Jon, but blows it by not answering Sansa's question about the North's independence. Theon, Edd, Tormund, and Beric all show up. A war council convenes and agree to Bran's plan in which he will act as bait to lure the Night King to the Godswood. Gendry finishes a not-all-that-special weapon for Arya, who then has her way with him. Tyrion, Jaime, Davos, Brienne, Podrick, and Tormund drink together, and in a moving scene Jaime knights Brienne. Jorah fails to dissuade Lyanna Mormont from fighting and is gifted with Hart's Bane by Samwell. Daenerys finds Jon at Lyanna Stark's tomb and he gives her the lowdown about his lineage and claim to the Iron Throne. Then the dead arrive.

Andrew and Manu kick off July with a podcast on "The Pointy End" that mainly centers around Robb Stark. His events begin and end the scenes today, as he first stands up for himself against Greatjon Umber with the Northern lords gathered at Winterfell, then talks with Bran briefly about his planned early departure, and closes out the show by meeting up with his mother, Catelyn, who has tracked his army down. Richard Madden's superb acting offers plenty to discuss, as do the emotions behind Robb's actions. Robb's not all there is to this episode, though. We also have eerie premonitions with Bran and a saddened Rickon, Sam Tarly musing on the wights burning at the Wall, and Osha talking to Bran in the Godswood about the old gods. Oh, and we also see Hodor's package. There's a big man! Onward. No more silliness! Everything gets serious as Eddard calls Cersei down to the Godswood to deliver a message-- take your kids, and get the hell out of town. The time for clues and hints is over, it's time to find out who's really playing this game of thrones for keeps! A lot of discussion of Eddards plan and Cersei's reaction takes place, and we ponder the question-- was this a mystery story? How central to the plot of the book is the search for who killed Jon Arryn?
