In all forms of school, there are some educators who really stand out as having “a way” with kids. Their ability to develop relationships of mutual trust and respect is second-to-none. Jeff Devens is one such educator. He has a way of putting everyone at ease.Jeff joined us for another episode – not to talk about finance this time, but to talk about his day job – working to support students and parents in international schools. As Audrey noted in her introduction to the episode, get your notebook and pen handy as Dr. Devens shares so much helpful information! For 29 years, Dr. Devens has worked in international education as a school psychologist, counselor, and classroom educator. Jeff completed his Ph.D. in School Psychology in 2006. His dissertation research focused on depression rates among international students.Growing up on public assistance and the only one of five children to graduate from high school, Jeff uniquely appreciates the hurt, heartache, and angst that parents encounter when raising kids. His first book, A Parent's Guide to Raising Kids Overseas, was released in 2018. Jeff's wife, Nanette, is also an international educator. They have two children: Cylas, a college freshman, and Cora, a high school sophomore. Our Guiding Question was, “Is parenting overseas different from parenting in one's home country? What are some things to think about?”Here are a few topics Jeff covered in this episode: What first-time overseas parents and students can experience with the start of schoolHow family systems can change when living internationallyThe importance of community with the school at the center of itCultural considerations and variationsStressed out studentsParenting stylesThe importance of valuesFostering life skillsWhere to learn more: The Facebook group Expat Financial Education run by Andrew Hallam Jeff's Book - A Parent's Guide to Raising Kids OverseasResources Mentioned in the Episode:David's Wellness@ES website which includes a section on Digital WellnessDr. Jonathan Haight's Anxious Generation website and book of the same nameThe show was recorded on August 30, 2024.Categories: Parenting | School Life | Transitions | Digital WellnessRemember to access our Educators Going Global website for more information or to subscribe to our newsletter!Email us with comments or suggestions at educatorsgoingglobal@gmail.com Follow us on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram or YouTube.Listen on your favorite podcast app: connect from our share page.Music: YouTube. Rage Against the Machine recorded their eponymously named debut album in May-June of 1992 and released it in November 1992. The Los Angeles-based group consisted of Zack de la Rocha on vocals, Tom Morello on guitar, Tim Commerford on bass, and Brad Wilk on drums. The group was known for their anti-establishment and politically charged lyrics. Rage Against the Machine combined a lot of genres of music into a single hard-hitting sound. The influence of hard rock and metal is clear, and elements of rap, funk, hip hop, and punk rock are clearly infused into the sound. This group was not just political in nature, every song is laced with revolutionary rants. The group draws inspiration from mondern revolutionary groups such as the IRA and the Black Panthers, and is highly critical of the policies of the United States, both foreign and domestic. RATM's debut album is largely based on their demo tape released a year before, which contained seven of the ten songs appearing on the album. That demo tape was recorded prior to the group's first live show, and was used as a means to build awareness of the group in the days before their signing with Epic Records. The album was a quick critical success and a slower commercial success. The group began to really take off on the strength of the single "Killing In the Name," and after their performance at the Lollapaloosa festival in mid 1993.Lynch brings us this high energy album in this week's podcast. BombtrackThe opening track starts with a strong guitar riff, and deals with themes of social injustice and resistance against oppression. Bullet In the HeadMedia manipulation and control of information are the issues dealt with in this track, which became a staple of the band's live shows. "Just victims of the in-house drive-by / They say jump, you say how high."Wake UpThis song will be familiar to fans of the 1999 film "The Matrix," as it is used at the conclusion when Neo calls the Matrix announcing he will reveal their existence. They lyrics are a critique of racism, the CIA and government corruption.Killing In the NameThe big single from the album addresses police brutality and institutional racism. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Face to Face by Siouxie & the Banshees (from the motion picture “”)This movie based on the Stephen King novel starring James Caan and Kathy Bates would win Bates an Oscar for Best Actress. STAFF PICKS:Empress of Pop by Insane JaneWayne starts the staff picks with an underrated local Georgia band. This song is a screed against Sinead O'Conner. Insane Jane produced two albums, the first called "Each Finger," and the second (which contains this song) entitled "Green Little Pill."Let's Get Rocked by Def LeppardDuring a time when hard rock was on the downswing, it is nice to hear a solid rocker which would have been at home on any of Def Leppard's 80's albums. Rob's staff pick shows that there was still some solid rock music going on in the midst of the grunge movement.57 Channels (and Nothin' On) by Bruce SpringsteenBruce features a Springsteen song which reflects the proliferation of cable television, but not necessarily good content on the tube. While Springsteen considers this sone a bit of a "playful misfire," the song did go to number 68 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 6 on the Mainstream Rock charts.Would? by Alice In ChainsLynch closes out the staff picks with a song written as a tribute to Andrew Wood, the late lead singer of Mother Love Bone, who died of a heroin overdose in 1990. The lyrics deal with the aftermath of rehab and the uncertainty of the future. NOVELTY TRACK:Achy Breaky Heart by Billy Ray CyrusLong before his daughter began her career in "Hannah Montana," Billy Ray Cyrus was all over the charts with this cheesy country song. In this Flashback Friday episode, we welcome back Ardranae Byer who shares that going private is a better option because you "can take 'em off the platform if you Want." She also discusses the pros and cons of being under the Touro umbrella versus doing it privately. She also shares that the pros of Touro are their protection plans and that they are supposed to screen the people before they're allowed on the platform. The cons of Toro are that they sometimes don't give you all of your money, and that they are more interested in the renter than the owner. ________________________________Interested in investing in small multifamily? Email writing can be a powerful tool in a salesperson's arsenal. It's a great way to nurture leads, establish trust, and build relationships with potential customers. But, like any tool, it's only useful if you know how to use it properly. It can be tricky to know what to say in an email and even more difficult to make sure your emails get read and responded to. What are some tips and tricks for writing emails that get read and get results? In today's episode, Rusty and Ron talk about email writing as one of the fundamentals of prospecting and salesmanship. They will discuss in detail the tips and tricks for writing subject lines that draw people to your emails, how to write a solid email body, and how to end an email effectively.Enjoy! In This Episode01:38 - Why email isn't the only way to prospect03:56 - What people think about emails05:29 - Tips and tricks for writing subject lines that get people to read your emailsNever use more than four words in the subject lineAsterisks as the number one punctuation that gets the highest responseNo number in a subject line is goodUse your own company nameThe number one thing in subject lines that produces the most response rates Flattery and direct asks work really well in subject linesInfluence and persuasion language are not goodIn terms of emotion, neutral tones had the highest response ratesDo not use the word 'you' or your'18:48 - The tips and tricks to creating an effective email bodyThe greeting linesPersonalize what you're sayingDo not use big words for the sake of sounding smartBullets and dashes have a below-average response rate on emailsUse call to action | ask a questionAvoid hyperlinks34:53 - The best ways to work on signaturesFavorite Quotes03:18 - "One person can sit down and write a great series of emails. But there's a reason why you need to hire a sales force of people because when you get organized, you target the right people, you prospected them, you get the right multi-threaded cadence, you engage, you use your human connection, and you personally engage with people, that's how you get results, not by robo-bombing everybody." - Rusty Jensen07:17 - "One of the things psychologically that happens when I look at my emails is if I think the email is from a bot or it's not a person, it actually releases some endorphins into your body when you delete it, like deleting your emails, it makes you happy." - Ron Halbert19:10 - "You're not trying to sell them through an email. As a salesperson, the whole goal is to get them on a call. Email should facilitate a conversation." - Rusty Jensen24:19 - "You want to really be subtle in terms of how you engage. You don't use a lot of big words. You don't want to use vocabulary words or ways of framing things to where you sound really smart. This isn't like a college paper. This is a conversational piece." - Rusty Jensen31:38 - You should ask one question. You should never ask two. So, one question should be included in every email you send, but more than one question is not good. It's just too much people aren't gonna respond." - Ron HalbertConnect with our HostsRusty Jensen on LinkedInRon Halbert on LinkedInThe Sales Prescription on LinkedInConga WebsiteListen to more episodes of the Sales Prescription PodcastSpotifyiTunesGoogle Podcast

Meet Aysen Farag is an Indigenous Medicine Woman of Amazigh, Jieng, and Kuku-Bari heritage. She has worked as a traditional herbalist and ceremonial leader for the last eight years and has continued to support the roots of indigenous values, honor, and customs as a teacher of ethnobotany and indigenous rights through African narratives of understanding. She knows well the plight of indigenous peoples around the world, and the sense of urgency there is to use their gifts and knowledge to bring healing to the Earth and its human and non-human kin. She has been working diligently to revive her ancestors' old traditions and languages, fighting for land reclamation, and recovering sacred ceremonies that were lost due to colonialism. In addition, she offers support, healing, and mentorship to others wanting to deepen into their own ancestral traditions, whether directly known to them or not. Aysen's greatest dream is to redefine the narratives of African Indigenous and Diasporic people with the beauty, wisdom, and grace that they deserve. She believes that the root of reclaiming one's power is through giving voice to one's deepest truth.Social Media handles: @lady_of_the_greenFacebook: Aysen Farag, Dreaming Roots - Indigenous Plant Medicine, Ceremony & RitesWebsite: www.dreamingroots.com (it is currently under construction)In this episode Aysen discusses:Divine timing and the meaning of her nameThe type difference of ancestors, biology, and soulWhat is ancestral workEthnobotany and plant medicine workCeremonial and ritual body practices to access ancestral workThe power of dreamworkWhat is the Tobacco ceremony and its healing potentialChallenged in Indigenous culturesMedicine songs are given through dreamworkRediscovering your own lineagesWhat is food sovereignty Learning and revitalizing indigenous languagesAwaken The Medicine Within - Retreatsawakenthemedicinewithin.com Awaken The Medicine Within - Membership, Courses, and CommunityGet your 3-Day FREE trial

The holidays bring up so many emotions when we someone close to us has gone to Spirit. As I was meditating on what to share in this year's holiday episode, I kept hearing that I should use the episode from 2020 because the ideas shared in that episode are timeless. I added something new in the beginning and at the end, and I did a lot of editing. So even if you listened to the episode last year, I invite you to listen again this year because you'll hear something new, or you'll hear something in a different way than you did last year.In this episode I shared:The very different Thanksgiving I had this year - and why it was perfect for meWhat to do during the holidays if you have other children or grandchildrenWhat to do if your only child is in Spirit and you're alone for the holidaysHoliday preparationsSetting boundaries to honor your griefThings to consider about your traditionsWhat to do if your grief becomes too much during a holiday get togetherWays you can honor your child or other loved ones during the holidaysRandom acts of kindness you can do in your child's or other loved one's nameThe importance of time and space in your holiday calendar I'd love to hear what you're going to do to honor yourself, your child, or other loved one during this tender season. #Bitcoin #cryptodotcom #staplescenterI'd like to welcome everyone to my new PODCASTDave's Daily Crypto TakeIn this channel I will be providing you with news on a daily basis about cryptocurrency, bitcoin, blockchain, FIAT. My main purpose is to share UNBIASED news and updates. Ultimately I learn and hopefully you learn while I go on this journey.ARTICLES used in today's video:https://ambcrypto.com/bitcoin-this-economist-will-be-comfortable-buying-in-again-only-when/Bitcoin: This economist will be comfortable buying in again only when…A lot of people are reluctant to jump into the crypto-pool. To them, price volatility in digital assets is a major concern and so is the thread of frauds and hacks.Ergo, the leading question today should be – What would make this group absolutely comfortable to join the crypto-bandwagon?It was in this context that Mohamed El-Erian, Former Chair of President Obama's Global Development Council, shared some insights in a CNBC interview. The economist praised cryptos' exponential surge this year. Moreover, he revealed that he even HODLed Bitcoin for a brief period, before selling them right before the rally to $60,000.El-Erian purchased some amount of Bitcoin while it was trading at around $3,000 in the winter of 2018. “I felt compelled to buy it,” he added. However, he sold it after Bitcoin closed in on its previous ATH and moved past $19,000.https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-11-17/canadian-teen-arrested-in-crypto-theft-worth-36-5-millionCanadian Teen Arrested in Crypto Theft Worth $36.5 MillionA Canadian teenager was arrested for allegedly stealing C$46 million ($36.5 million) worth of cryptocurrency from a U.S. victim, the biggest crypto theft reported from one person, according to police in the city of Hamilton, near Toronto.Police said the victim was targeted through a cell phone scam known as SIM swapping, in which a scammer hijacks a wireless customer's phone number to intercept two-factor authentication requests and gain access to the victim's accounts. The arrest was the result of a joint investigation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Secret Service Electronic Crimes Task Force, the Hamilton Police Service said in a statement. Is market manipulation the reason why?Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have fallen sharply after seeing record-highs just last week.Bitcoin's price plunged to $58,400 (€51,000) on Tuesday and hovered just under the $60,000 (€53,000) threshold on Wednesday as the crypto market is again becoming a sea of red.It marks a 12 per cent drop from the record high of $69,000 (€61,000) set on November 10.https://ambcrypto.com/xrp-lawsuit-why-a-win-for-ripple-could-also-be-a-victory-for-ethereum/XRP lawsuit: Why a win for Ripple could also be a victory for EthereumAn enemy of an enemy is a friend. A common phrase, that may just be valid within the ongoing lawsuit between the SEC and fintech firm Ripple and its native token, XRP over the alleged sale of unregistered securities.Although, Ethereum, directly or indirectly plays a part as well in this triangle. It all started when Ripple filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the SEC, over unfair treatment. Arguably, SEC in the past, had given preference and regulatory green light to ETH which enabled it to surpass XRP token. In this regard, crypto lawyer John Deaton in a series of tweets expressed his narrative concerning the developing equation between ETH and XRP.https://www.npr.org/2021/11/17/1056431658/staples-center-lakers-crypto-arena-nameThe home of the Lakers is changing its name to Crypto.com ArenaOne of Los Angeles' most iconic sports and entertainment venues is rebranding after two decades. The Staples Center will go from bearing the name of an office supply retail chain to that of a cryptocurrency platform when it becomes the Crypto.com Arena next month. That's thanks to a new agreement between AEG — which owns and operates the venue — and Singapore-based Crypto.com. Google's Pixel 6 will debut the Google made chipJust like Apple, Google's flagship phone will now have a chip made to blend the software and hardware in a full Google experience. They say it's designed to be 80% faster than the Google Pixel 5, offers more accurate speech to text, and better image processing. They've got a three camera array on the back of the device in a horizontal strip, offering a 4x optical zoom. But to me, the coolest thing about the release is their features for calling customer service lines. They'll be able to tell you how long a call to the bank, or an airline is going to take before you even dial. They're using data from others users, like on Google Maps, to help provide these insights. Didn't quite catch what option you're meant to press for a new account? They'll display the options on your screen.Facebook to change its nameThe corporate company will be named something different to Facebook, which will still be the name of the 'big blue' app. Google did something similar when they created a parent organization called Alphabet.Apple's Macbook Pro will now have a notchJust like the iPhone, the laptop's will now have a camera that drops down into the screen. Apple did that on the phone to offer FaceID, but that won't be on the laptops - which is kind of confusing. TouchID will remain, even though the touch bar is (finally) being ditched. LISTEN ABOVE

Intro: It seems to me that with all the good technology we have in our current culture, we are are communicating more poorly than ever before. What do I mean by that? It seems that when something is communicated these day over the media, we are either getting the story out of context or a very incomplete story to fit some bad agenda. It also seems that, in general, people are more likely to believe a lie than the truth. Rather than looking to the truth of Scripture, people would rather look to other people or things who will propagate information in order to manipulate and takes advantage of you because they desire control or power. In this passage, Dr. Luke gives us two warnings about two dangers of which we need to be aware. The first warning is about the danger of an incomplete gospel. The second danger is a warning about the danger of superstitions. I would like to suggest both are present in our day and culture. Beware of Incomplete GospelsAny message that does not include to followingSalvation by faith alone in the Person and work or Jesus ChristIncarnation including the virgin birthSubstitutionary death in our place to pay for our sin once for allThe resurrectionThe fact of the sin problem into which we are all bornThe person and ministry of the Holy SpiritThe difference between religion and ChristianityThe great transaction that takes place the moment we trust Christ as our Lord and SaviorAny gospel message that omits any of this information is an incomplete or false gospel! The true gospel will be believed by some, but many others will respond with hostilityBeware of SuperstitionGod did some extra ordinary things through PaulRemember these powerful things were to point people to Jesus and His love and graceSome people were healed and made holeSatan is the great counterfeiter Some of the unbelieving Jews went around driving out evil spirits and tried to invoke the Name of JesusThey also use Paul's nameThe perpetrators were the 7 seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish high priestThey were doing this for show, probably for money, and definitely for power and prestigeLook at the response of the demon in the demon-possessed man and the consequencesGod Always has the Last WordBecause of the above incident, many of the Jews and Greeks in Ephesus were all seized with fearThe Name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honorThere was confession and repentance happenedThere was real evidence of confession and repentanceThe Word of the Lord spread and grew in powerClosing:
Recorded Content - Helping B2B marketers use a podcast for content marketing
"I am launching a podcast for a reason. It is not just fun," said Mike Wolber, the CRO at Rent Dynamics and the host of the Modern Multifamily podcast. He started creating podcast episodes alongside his other work duties because he wanted to hear about exciting trends from people in the multifamily industry and share them with listeners. So, what is the hardest part about creating a podcast? For Mike, it was the fear of what other people would think and whether he could find the guests for his show. But he soon realized that good preparation and adopting a custom “conversation funnel” would serve as secret weapons to beat his very own imposter syndrome. The art of podcasting is a never-ending journey. According to Mike, every episode presents an opportunity to learn something new and get innovative ideas from the guests. "Even if a single failure felt bad, it was a good learning opportunity," concludes Mike.Tune in to this episode of Recorded Content and uncover Mike's step-by-step guide to launching a podcast, the challenges he faced along the way, and resources future B2B podcast hosts may find helpful. In this episode, not only you will learn about the beginnings of the Modern Multifamily podcast, but you'll also hear some of the workflow details, including:Tools used to make and edit podcastsBrainstorming the podcast nameThe importance of being well-prepared for the episodeObserving failure as a new lesson to learnWhere to find guests

It all started for John by being curious about the origin of his name and then learning about the man after whom he was named. Throughout his research John discovered an artifact that told the story of a World War I soldier and stories of an ancestor tangibly involved with the growth of Melbourne. Finding personal connections with world and regional events as helped the study of history be more meaningful. In this episode John shares:How his research journey began with an internet search of his nameThe story of a journal that survived World War I even though its author did notWhat it means to him to know one of his ancestors played role in Melbourne’s history About John:John has been a performer for nearly 20 years and has done a mixture of work both professional and amateur. He is also an avid historian and has done plenty of research into his own family tree. You need to know what you’re doing when it comes to choosing the best brand assets to create, and which to prioritise creating and protecting. When you know that securing a colour as a trademark is unlikely, it means you can perhaps relax around colour and instead put more emphasis on bringing other brand elements to the fore more when advertising. Why would you want to trademark a colour given that colour is difficult to trademark, and is part and parcel of every visual identity, even those that opt for black and white? It is rare to hear of someone having to rebrand because they’re using someone else’s colours after all.Your logo, brand colours or shapes and other visual or aural elements of your branding are the identifiers that anchor associations in customers’ minds to the brand name. The important objective of branding is to build mental availability and colour is part of the way busy people become aware of a brand and associate it to the brand nameThe use of colour and visual identities can be a great communicator of a brand’s values and messages communicating without any need for wordsThe visual identity as a whole triggers mental associations to the brandThe purpose of a trademark is to protect the identifying signs that enable buyers to recognise the origin of your goods or servicesif you can secure a trademark the benefit of doing so and getting rights to a particular pantone colour is that you have a legally enforceable right to stop competitors using the same or confusingly similar coloursWith logos, you can readily register a trademark and enforce your rights in the logoThe way legal rights like trademarks work, is that if a competitor realises your rights are strong, they avoid copying youA non-conventional trademark like colour is not at all straightforward to secureBy strategically using other intellectual property rights to protect its bottle shape and make it more difficult for competitors to copy the bottle, Coca Cola gradually associated its bottle shape in consumers’ minds by clever advertising that consistently associated the bottle shape to the brandThe 7 Costly Mistakes People Make When Branding or Rebranding - https://bit.ly/2VuUmsV

Intellectual property rights, which cover intangibles are a series of different rights, which are huge bodies of law within their own right, there's patents, trademarks, copyright designs, confidentiality, each of these is a vast area of law.It became one of my life purposes, to raise awareness of IPWhat you need to do wherever you are located in the world will be the same in order to protect your position, way before you go and see a lawyerIP is the nuts and bolts of your business, whether you're aiming to make it really big, or you just want to lifestyle in little business, you do need to pay attention to IP You need to be aware of how they impact you in terms of the actions you're going to take when you first set up or start a new projectPatents protect the way things work, how they functionEvery time you create something new, set up a new product, these three rights come into their own. And that's confidentiality, trademarks, and copyrightTrademarks protect your names, your logo, your distinctive branding, effectively, trademarks are hugely importantYour website, music, images, your content, any software you have, all sorts of things are protected by copyrightThe idea behind trademarks is that terms that other traders need to use should be kept freeNaming is very important to suspend your beliefs about what makes for a good name, and be willing to go and learn about names so that when you're choosing themThere's the protection involved when you're actually creating something like a nameThe problem with IP at the moment is that being an intangible, it's very easily overlooked

Word of Note Series - Fika - The Swedish ritual of spending quality timeHygge is hard to accomplish at work… so the Swedish have Fika! From Sweden’s official website - “Fika is Swedish for a coffee break that’s more about socialising than drinking coffee. And something sweet is also welcome. It is much more than having a coffee. It is a social phenomenon, a legitimate reason to set aside a moment for quality time. Fika can happen at any time, morning as well as evening. It can be savoured at home, at work or in a café. It can be with colleagues, family, friends, or someone you are trying to get to know. I was chatting with someone at an event the other day and she wanted to launch a podcast. But the only thing that was stopping her was the fact that she was stuck on what to name it. https://youtu.be/hCnj55EgZ2U 2 Sam 7- For Himself a NameThe main point is found in v 23 And who is like Your people, like Israel, the one nation on the earth whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people, to make for Himself a name—and to do for Yourself great and awesome deeds for Your land—before Your people whom You redeemed for Yourself from Egypt, the nations, and their gods? That's really the crux of the whole story and the crux of The whole Bible and the experience of being a Christian- “to make himself a name” God chose Abram, to Abraham, to David to Jesus for one purpose- to make for himself a nameHIMSELF a NAME- I call myself a Christian. I want to make HIM a name! What can we do to Make HIM a name? You have to want to honor GodThis is what David was trying to do- He had a plan- I want to build you this great hosueThis was a great plan- why would it not be a great plan? It was for the Lord?“See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells inside tent curtains.”3 Then Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you. 4 But it happened that night that the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying, 5 “Go and tell My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Would you build a house for Me to dwell in?David's plan was a solid Godly plan- build a house for the Lord- Why wouldn't make sense- IT was to honor God- It was bring glory to his name. It was a RESPONSE to who God was and what God had done for him- To give him a place. To HONOR HIM. David wanted to Spread the NAME of YHWH and that was honorable. This was always Davids heart- Psalm 27:4 One thing I have desired of the Lord, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the Lord, And to inquire in His temple.Psalm 69:9 Because zeal for Your house has eaten me up, And the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.Again- this is why david is called a man after Gods heart- He wasn't about promoting himselfYou can't simultaneously promote God and yourself at the same time. Its HIS NAME What does it mean to youDoes honoring and blessing God come into your mind? Do you want to make HIM a NAMEI was with some pastors this week- they asked me- Why do you do what you doFor people to fully follow the Lord every day. To never forget whose they are and who they are. If you do that- you'll honor him. All day every day. You'll start your day with- Psalm 143: 8 Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning, For in You do I trust; Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, For I lift up my soul to You.You'll start your day with “how can I make a name for you today”? Do something! (david did)The question is- who's life is it and who are you living it for? Why do some waiters squat when they serve a table?Sam RadionThis is a psychological trick and once you have noticed it once you'll start noticing it forever!Squatting at the table puts yourself on the same level as the diners. It allows you to look them straight in the eye rather than looking down on them and humanises you as “Sam your server”. “I like Sam, he seems friendly, lets's give him a bigger than normal tip”And that's what it's all about in this instance - money. It may be to get a bigger tip or it may be to ensure you feel comfortable at the restaurant and come back again and again to buy food, it's a business after all. Some servers are naturally good with people and will do this automatically, some are told to do it in training. The trouble is, now you've started noticing this behaviour, you'll start noticing all the other psychological tricks that are used on you…That's sweet, the server drew a smiley face and wrote ‘thanks' on my billThe server touches your shoulder or upper armThe server gave their nameThe server repeats your order back to you (builds rapport)The waitress is wearing a red t-shirt (only seems to work on waitresses serving men)The server said that the dish you chose was their personal favourite tooThe server told you they had a special offer for only one couple tonight and they chose youThe bill came with a small gift for you (a small free liqueur, a sweetie or chocolate) - receiving a gift means you should give a gift, i.e. tip.And don't start on all the psychological tricks employed on menus like boxing out the highest margin foods

A discussion of the pros and cons of the name “soft skills” and whether other names are better and avoid relegating them to second-class status in the workplace. Hosts Dr. Tobin Porterfield and Bob Graham explore the name “soft skills” and if it’s a good moniker for all of the skills employees and organizations use in combination with technical skills.Among the topics they discuss:Why some people think soft skills is derogatory and minimizes the role these skills play in the workplace, job hunts and other aspects of workThe roots of the name “soft skills” and why those roots may make it the right nameWhat “hard skills” are and how they have evolvedUsing the language that fits the culture you are working withShould soft skills be called non-technical skills, professional skills, communication skills, critical skills, emotional intelligenceThe complexity of soft skills doesn’t match the nameThe subjective nature of soft skills and how that further complicates naming themTechnical skills alone don’t serve us* Blending technical skills and soft skills make the difference in all workplacesContact us at podcast@SeriousSoftSkills.com or tweet us at @RealSoftSkills if you have an idea for a better nameNext WeekWe start our Six Weeks of Serious Soft Skills Strategy.
