“The lessons you learn at GORUCK events, they're applicable to everything in life.” Cadre Dan Plants returns to the podcast for episode 053 to talk with Jason about 10 years of building better Americans through GORUCK Events. Dan uses his experience as an Army Sergeant Major and multiple deployments as a Green Beret to teach servant leadership, teamwork and the mindset of pushing through adversity during his events. “I always, always, always put people first. Always.” Starting with his introductory speech from the first Heavy at Fort Bragg, Dan shares some of the why behind GORUCK events through his first events as a participant and Cadre, the first Ascent, GORUCK Selection, Normandy and numerous other Challenges. Dan shares some of his personal challenges leading events, funny stories and the reasons he keeps coming back (hint: it is about the people). He also shares some of his lessons from years of service from his mentors at the tip of the spear.  Whether you have done a Challenge or are thinking of signing up for your first event, this episode is motivation and reminder of the community and spirit of GORUCK over 10years -- how it has changed and grown -- and how investing in the long game and building bridges pays off.  Links: GORUCK Heavy 001 Video (the intro) - Fort Bragg 2014 “How Dan Changed GORUCK Forever” Battle of Shok Valley Glorious Professionals Episode 045 - Normandy Retrospective Learn more about GORUCK  Glorious Professionals podcast website

Jim “Pee Wee” Martin in Ohio, one of the “Toccoa Originals” and few surviving paratroopers of WWII sat down with Jason and Rich, along with a handful of GORUCK Cadre, for Episode 044 in Ohio. On June 6, 2014, the 70th anniversary of D-Day, Martin became the last WWII era American paratrooper to jump over Normandy at the age of 93, landing behind Utah Beach just as he had 70 years earlier. A frank storyteller with strong opinions, Mr. Martin sprinkles his recollections with the greater history as well as personal anecdotes, and reminds that he is “just a representative of his unit.”  A child of the Depression, Martin entered the military in 1942 and volunteered for the 101st Airborne Division -- what became the Screaming Eagles. He and the original “Toccoa Men” went through intense training at Camp Toccoa, Georgia, where the 506th was formed under Colonel Robert F. Sink. Martin talks about his decision to serve and the culling process at Currahee mountain -- from 6500 to 1650 men over the first 6months -- with blunt honesty. Despite being the smallest in his unit at 103 pounds (hence “Pee Wee” as a nickname) he says the only worry was if he was going to be able to stay. The night before D-Day, June 6, 1944, Martin's company parachuted over Normandy and touched down in enemy-controlled territory behind Utah Beach. They fought for 43 days as part of the Normandy campaign -- including in “Bloody Gulch” -- before moving on to invade Holland; holding the line in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge; and finishing off by taking Berchtesgaden, site of Hitler's “Eagle's Nest” redoubt in the German Alps. Martin celebrated his 100th birthday this year with a mass parachute drop -- including two of his granddaughters -- using vintage aircraft in a tribute to his place in history and his community. He talks about returning to Ohio in a time of continued rationing, marrying Donna (his wife of 72years before she passed two years ago) and building a life for them and their 5 children. He says that while he rarely thinks about his service “except during talks like this” because he and his fellows “had more important things to do” he shares many memories from his unique perspective.  Links: Jim Martin's Facebook Page Battle of Bloody Gulch “Jim "Pee Wee" Martin - Airborne Soldier” video by U.S. Army Broadcasting (2014) Mark Bando's 101st Airborne - the Screaming Eagles at Normandy Maj. For Episode 016, Jason and Rich talk to Cadre Will Hinkson about going through transitions, perceptions versus reality, and the importance of finding an individual “why.” Will’s competitive nature - and some good advertising - led him to become a Reconnaissance Marine on the scorching rooftops of Iraq. Later during a security contracting gig in Kabul he started a side-gig which became the first CrossFit affiliate at an embassy. That experience shifted his focus to people-centered business and he returned to start a successful gym stateside. Will talks about what his veneer of success and relentless pace was covering however, and how he eventually got a wake up call via another commercial to fully transition to a more fulfilling, meaningful life.  “Establish your why and chase it relentlessly. When you know why you’re doing something, and you have your core values and mission in place, do not let anything stop you.” Will shares the story of how he answered an unexpected call by a buddy and found himself serving in a new capacity: as a dive team member at Force Blue, a non-profit which unites the community of Special Operations veterans with the world of marine conservation. Will also uses his skills to help others as the creator of Scale Through Impact, a leadership consulting company which provides resources and community support to small business owners. In Episode 005 of Glorious Professionals, Jason and Rich bring Cadre Surfhog (aka Sean) into the garage to talk about his most recent deployment and bringing the “deployment mindset” to home quarantine - most notably the importance of adaptability when the abnormal becomes normal. You can’t dictate events/atmospherics but you do dictate your response.  From the Special Forces list of Core Attributes, Adaptability: “The ability to maintain composure while responding to or adjusting one’s own thinking and actions to fit a changing environment; the ability to think and solve problems in unconventional ways; the ability to recognize, understand and navigate within multiple social networks; the ability to proactively shape the environment or circumstances in anticipation of desired outcomes.” Surfhog is a GORUCK Cadre and combat diver with almost 30 years of Special Forces training and experience. He's served in multiple deployments to the Middle East and Africa. He returned home in March 2020 from an eventful 13-months in Iraq. In this conversation, the guys get into the events of late December 2019 into January 2020 just before he was due to come home. Some of the featured lessons from his service are having an optimistic attitude with realistic expectations, and doing the most with 80% information. He stresses the importance of focusing on true needs, having a schedule (the 2-3-7 rule) and making sure to maintain the physical piece both on deployment and now at home - especially now in the time of COVID-19. My iPhone vibrates and I quickly pull it out to see what the latest from Command is. As the designated Comms for the team, it is my job to stay on top of what other teams are doing and orders from on high. “Blue teams, you have two minutes until hunting of red teams begins.” I share the news with the team and we quickly scurry to our predetermined hiding spot. We were assigned call sign Delta. Some of us know each other. Others are strangers. But, for the night we are together and everything from building fires to reading maps will only be successful if we work together as a team. After a night in the darkness, the morning sun is arriving and her warmth feels good. Throughout the night we’ve talked to locals to gather intel, carried fallen comrades on stretchers made from what we could find and stopped the bleeding on our two-liter friends who took a knife to the heart. We weren’t sent out into the wild city of Boston without knowledge to help us survive the night or beyond. Two Special Forces veterans shared what they learned in the mountains and deserts of Iraq and Afghanistan. They instructed us on the differences between bugging out in Idaho versus North Carolina. They did their best to instruct the eighty or so of us who had signed up to be part of this unique experience. I had several rucks to choose from and opted for my trusty black GR1 and Dylan was using his gray wolf Rucker for the night. As the hours rolled on, I knew we had both overpacked, but there were no regrets for being prepared. Taking cover next to a U-Haul, I quickly texted the rest of Team Delta. We had become split up since the last hunting season began and it was my job to ensure that everyone knew what was going on and where we needed to be. Earlier in the night as Dylan and I had taken cover in decorative bushes in the middle of the street. Cars and pedestrians passed us by without any knowledge that we were there. Nearby the rest of our team were under cars and in the shadows of entry ways as the Cadre hunted for us. I’ll never forget those damn bushes. Might have something to do with my new “war paint” I was covered in from thorns ripping up my forehead while hiding. That and the man sitting on a bench nearby and what he must have thought as two dark figures rose out of the bushes in front of him and his look of shock as he let out a, “Whoa!” upon seeing us. Most of Delta has regrouped. We back into our hobbit hole and replace the pallet we’ve added as a bit of extra concealment. We hear approaching feet and recognize that it is the final member of our team. We fit him in and bunker down for the next wave. My iPhone goes nuts again and again. The blue teams don’t seem to be able to tell time and are not sure if hunting has begun for them or not. We chuckle silently and wait. Down the alley, we spot someone turn the corner. They look directly at us, do a double check and then leave. We are one with the shadows. The alley was an obvious hiding spot, but we’ve taken it a step further. We are never found. Returning to base, the doors to our HQ are closed. Rarely a good sign because you never know what dragons may pour forth as they roll up. Our final dragons of the night are named Mike and John and they have an evil grin of delight on their faces as only GORUCK Cadre can flash. Our improvised gas masks are needed. We line up as ordered. One final test for the night? Mention of a new formation inside and no more teams moving forward, but one single unit. Smells like citrus. Burns like being tattooed by the sun. Glad we learned how to make these masks earlier in the night. We enter headquarters and see the patches. We are one unit now. GORUCK Constellation #008 Now it is your turn. The hardest part is signing up.

Co-hosts Jan Rutherford and Jim Vaselopulos interview John Brumer, Jason Ginos, and Micah Niebauer, founders of Southern Pines Brewing. The three entrepreneurs first met while serving in the 3rd Special Forces Group. John enlisted right into the Special Forces qualification course. Jason went to Millikin University, and was a psychological operations specialist before heading into the 3rd Group. Micah attended Wheaton College in the ROTC Program, and went to the Department of State, the Department of Commerce, joined the 82nd Airborne, and then joined the 3rd Special Forces Group. These men served with distinction, with multiple active-duty tours. John, or Juan Peligro, as the Patagonia crew referred to him, has been a GORUCK Cadre since 2014. Jason and his wife, Aleah, have been married nine years, and have three young children, Tanner, Luke, and Charlotte. Micah and his wife, Patricia have been married for 10 years, and have three young children, Eva, Claudia, and Wyatt. Micah is the CEO, Jason is the CFO, and John is the COO of Southern Pines Brewing, in Southern Pines, North Carolina, where they all reside. Jan and Jim speak with John, Jason, and Micah about how disciplines learned through their Special Forces service helped them unite in a business partnership, and how they chose to advance a home-brewing passion they shared into a viable business. They also discuss how identifying with a community, and participating in community programs lends purpose to the enterprise. They discuss the company's mission and values individually, and how these statements of purpose keep them going despite inevitable challenges. There is also a segment about John’s participation in the Crucible in Patagonia, and how he is applying the lessons into the business on a daily basis. Listen in to learn more about turning a shared passion into a dynamic business partnership.   Key Takeaways [2:00] John, Jason, and Micah all served in the 3rd Special Forces Group, an airborne unit of the Green Berets. Their common bond, and strong teamwork, allowed them to enter head first into the entrepreneurial world as the Co-Founders of Southern Pines Brewing. [4:27] As the Co-Founders developed the slogan and mission statement for Southern Pines Brewing, they focused on the community aspect of craft brewing, with the art, history and tradition behind it. They visited many craft breweries to find inspiration for starting Southern Pines Brewing. They adopted some ideas they saw, and suggestions they received. [6:08] Southern Pines Brewing makes a huge impact on the local community. They participate in Boys and Girls clubs, and the Walter Moss Foundation, and retirement homes. They take their military community sense of belonging with them. Everybody understands beer. [7:33] Southern PInes Values: The customer is the focus of everything we do. We provide the highest quality products for our customers. We are a professional organization, demonstrating this in everything we do. We are constantly learning and growing. We are good citizens in the community. Fear will not drive decision-making. We are aggressive. Nothing is impossible. [8:58] Jason explains that their ambition to venture into brewing led them to be aggressive. First, they needed aggressive growth. In the second year they needed growth and financial efficiency. They will aggressively reach for their full effective production capacity, and eliminate choke points. In 2017, they will grow, but aggressively pay down debt and become a better business. [11:23] Micah talks about overcoming fear, by being proactive in their decisions. Their military experience leads them to take measured risks daily, not for their lives, but for their livelihood. [15:18] John speaks on how nothing is impossible became one of their values. He recalls a race car course in Special Ops. The lesson he learned was to look where you’re going. Don’t worry about all of the things that could possibly happen. Worry about the outcomes that you’re trying to accomplish. John speaks of his support from his partners to turn a hobby into a viable business. [21:33] Jason recommends, The Intelligent Investor, by Benjamin Graham, and the Berkshire Hathaway books. He also recommends Teddy Roosevelt’s “Man in the Arena” speech. Micah recommends two books, Built to Sell, by John Warrillow, and Scaling Up, by Verne Harnish. John recommends, Tribe, by Sebastian Junger, and Nassim Taleb’s, The Black Swan. [28:53] Micah notes John’s interactions with executives on the Crucible opened opportunities. Jason comments how John was so alive when he got back from being in beautiful landscapes with awesome leaders. The team problem-solving was impactful. John says the biggest thing was the day-to-day training through personal interaction with executives and veterans. [35:20] The partners finally have the time to look forward five to ten years. What are the best tools to get there? It’s another world from three Army guys making beer in a garage. There are opportunities and responsibilities not available before. [37:46] John speaks on how difficult it was to get financing. Jason says eight banks rejected them. The local PNC branch backed them, just when they were ready to go to Plan B. Micah adds they are so successful together because they are equally yoked to the success of the business. No one is going home. The business has to succeed. They are past the point of no-return.   Books Mentioned in This Episode The Intelligent Investor: The Definitive Book on Value Investing, by Benjamin Graham “Citizenship in a Republic (The Man in the Arena),” by Theodore Roosevelt Built to Sell: Creating a Business That Can Thrive Without You, by John Warrillow Scaling Up: How a Few Companies Make It...and Why the Rest Don't, by Verne Harnish Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging, by Sebastian Junger The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable, by Nassim Nicholas Taleb   Bios MICAH NIEBAUER, Co-founder & CEO Micah Niebauer is originally from Superior, Wisconsin.
