The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the eighty-first episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience.' Hosted by COL Ricky Taylor, the Commander of Ops Group (COG). Today's guests are the Commanding General and Division Command Sergeant Major of the 4th Infantry Division, MG David Doyle and CSM Alex Kupratty. This episode was filmed on Veterans Day during a decisive action training environment rotation at the JRTC and aired on Thanksgiving Day. Veterans Day, celebrated annually on November 11, honors the service and sacrifices of all U.S. military veterans. The date reflects the historic moment of 11:00 AM on November 11, 1918, when the armistice ending World War I took effect—symbolizing peace after immense sacrifice. Originally known as Armistice Day, it was renamed in 1954 to recognize veterans from all conflicts. Veterans Day not only commemorates those who have served but also emphasizes the ongoing need for service to the nation. It serves as a reminder of the dedication required to protect freedom and the responsibility to support those who have borne the burden of safeguarding it. The 4th Infantry Division, also known as the “Ivy Division,” has a distinguished history dating back to its establishment in 1917 during World War I. Its nickname and patch, featuring four ivy leaves arranged in the Roman numeral “IV,” symbolize tenacity and endurance, as ivy clings to any surface, just as the division perseveres in all missions. The division's motto, “Steadfast & Loyal,” reflects its commitment to excellence and reliability in combat. Known by its call sign “Ivy,” the division has played pivotal roles in major conflicts, including the D-Day landings at Utah Beach during World War II, extensive combat operations in Vietnam, and deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado, the 4th Infantry Division continues to serve as a premier mechanized infantry unit, exemplifying innovation and adaptability on the modern battlefield. In this episode, we discuss critical preparations for large-scale combat operations, emphasizing the importance of mastering fundamental warfighting skills and leader development. The team highlighted the need for proficiency in combined arms maneuver, sustainment, and reconnaissance, while stressing a return to basics like fieldcraft, effective communication, and the disciplined use of warfighting functions. With the modern battlefield presenting challenges such as contested environments and the need for reduced electromagnetic signatures, the integration of multi-domain capabilities was identified as essential for mission success and survival in combat. Leader development and training management were also prominent themes, with a focus on prioritizing training to build cohesive, resilient formations. The importance of equipping junior leaders to certify and lead their units was emphasized, particularly in addressing gaps caused by rapid promotions and personnel shortages. Prolonged field exercises were cited as effective for exposing soldiers to realistic combat conditions and building operational endurance. Additionally, we discussed adapting reconnaissance strategies to align with structural changes, encouraging creative task organization and leveraging tools like small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) to enhance situational awareness. These insights reflect a comprehensive approach to preparing for the complex demands of LSCO. Part of S01 “The Leader's Laboratory” series. Army Special Operations Forces are led by LTG John Braga, Commander of United States Army Special Operations Command. General Braga and Creator and Host Fran Racioppi stormed the Utah Beach Communication Bunker responsible for the coordination of German defenses and later the facilitation of the largest amphibious assault in history. From this iconic setting, we unpacked the significance of World War II on international norms still in play today and challenged at a level not seen since the pre-war era. General Braga shared his vision for Army Special Operations, his focus on threat-informed decision-making, and how Special Operations has evolved; but more importantly where it needs to go and why it's not there yet. He also explains how Special Operations are preparing for conflict with nation-states like China and Iran, while also ensuring terrorist organizations have no sanctuary across the globe. Finally, we talk about integration, and why Special Operations is a critical node in the cyber and space fight deep behind enemy lines. Check out our conversation from underneath Utah Beach. DISCLAIMER -- *Documentary First Productions and it's staff acknowledge the complexity of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Comments made in this video are meant to explore the complexity of violence rather than to promote or stand for a particular cause. -- In this week's episode of Documentary First, host Christian Taylor is joined by summer intern Peyton Rabb to recount their unforgettable journey to Normandy for the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day landings. The Documentary First Productions team had the profound honor of accompanying 101-year-old WWII veteran Ceo Bauer to the commemorative ceremonies—his first experience in Normandy attending the D-Day commemorations. This deeply moving experience touched not only Ceo and the team but also the people of Normandy and the active-duty military members who took part in the events. Christian and Peyton reflect on the emotional impact of their documentary, "The Girl Who Wore Freedom", which centers around Ceo Bauer's story and resonates deeply with audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. The episode delves into the French perspective on war and freedom, the significance of the D-Day commemorations, and the team's interactions with notable figures like Air Force captain (CPT), Christian Maude. Listeners will be transported to key moments of the trip, from visiting the historic church at Angoville-au-Plain, with its blood-stained pews, to witnessing a reenactment at Utah Beach. Peyton also shares her personal growth from this experience, including the profound effect of receiving Ceo's book. The episode wraps up with thoughtful reflections on the importance of taking risks, the power of storytelling, and the value of intergenerational friendships forged through shared history. Stephanie Harmon is the director for The Utah Honor Flight, an organization that provides healing trips for veterans to Washington DC. It is a position where Stephanie feels the veterans give more to her than she could ever repay. Stephanie is a lover of American history, an advocate for our veterans, and a hardcore patriot. When given the opportunity, she jumped at the chance to be in Normandy on the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. What Stephanie experienced in Normandy and its beaches was lifechanging. Running her toes through the sand, something Stephanie finds solace in wherever she travels somewhere with a beach, became a totally different experience. The ghosts of courageous men were almost palpable. Stephanie felt the sacredness of Normandy. She was connected to their fear, courage, and sacrifice. The American flag lined the streets of small villages as tributes to their heroes from long ago. It was a reminder of the flag discord at home; how some Americans see little value in respecting and honoring our flag. Stephanie knows it is vital that parents and grandparents share with their families the value of American pride and patriotism. The solution for what plagues our country does not begin in schools, it starts at home with family gatherings and dinners. Ridding ourselves of the seed of contempt for America must begin there. 80 years have passed since the allied troops parachuted into enemy territory and stormed the beaches of Normandy. D-Day launched "Operation Overlord" ~ the campaign that would shift the tides of World War II, ultimately ending Hitler's reign in Europe, and changing America's story, and world history, forever. Join me on my travels through Normandy, France - to walk the ground where the historic D-Day invasion happened. Together, we visit key sites, revisit critical stories and encounter dynamic people who continue to preserve the story of D-Day and beyond for future generations. **also mispronunication alert - I referred to the French town of "Calais"~ The correct pronunciation is "ka-lay"** Below we provided time codes if you want to listen to this podcast in parts: 1. The Basics (0:00 to 30:00) - What should every one know about D-Day and beyond? We dig into some details, looking at maps and a timeline. PLUS ~ join me as we travel to Omaha and Utah, the two beaches where American troops landed on June 6th, 1944. AND ... hear the reflections of a historic female war correspondent. 2. Insight From Normandy (30:00:-50:00) - On the ground reporting helped me better understand the logistics and challenges of this historic invasion. Let's walk together through a German bunker with a historian and visit a famous war-time trench on French farmland made famous by "Band of Brothers." 3. Chance Encounters (50:00-1:20) - Meet David and learn how he honors his grandfather, who landed on Utah Beach. See the church where a special tribute literally hangs from the arches. Meet Michele and learn how a twist of fate in the form of a lost canteen shaped his life's work and the historic preservation of D-Day relics. 4. Reporter's Notebook (1:20:00-end) - A moment for reflection: I sift through some of the conflicting emotions from the trip - the thrill of seeing such beautiful tributes to honor those who made such a sacrifice, while wondering why America doesn't honor D-Day with more passion here at home; and the juxtaposition of commemorating an important moment in time, and capitalizing on it. D-Day Anniversary Today is the 80th anniversary of the Normandy D-Day landing. Many of the heroes of the Greatest generation traveled back to Normandy for a final visit. All are over 90 years old, many over 100. When I was growing up, everyone I knew had a relative who had been killed during World War II. Many of them were killed during the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944. Operation Overlord was the largest amphibious invasion in history, and was the beginning of the rescue of Europe from the Nazis. It was only the beginning. The war in Europe continued for another 11 months. I had known that my cousin Herman was killed in Normandy. For years, I assumed he had been killed during the invasion on June 6. Recently, I discovered a web page that covered Herman Cohen's service, and learned that he had survived the landing at Utah Beach, and was killed in battle 5 weeks later. During the invasion, he was a Private First Class. As senior soldiers were killed, he was promoted to Sergeant. In the photos on the website, Private Cohen looks like a young kid before the invasion. In the photo taken shortly before his death, Sergeant Cohen looks like a battle-hardened soldier. Here is the website telling Herman Cohen's story: https://delawarewwiifallen.com/2022/01/24/sergeant-herman-cohen/ Many of the soldiers in the landing craft would sign “short snorter” one-dollar bills. They would each pass a bill around to get everyone's signature on it, hoping to survive with a souvenir. Every June 6th I go to Youtube to watch the 10-minute D-Day invasion scene in Saving Private Ryan.

We mark Memorial Day with the PFC Lawrence Gordon Foundation's Jed Henry (https://www.pfclawrencegordonfoundati...) who, along with Operation Benjamin (https://www.operationbenjamin.org/nat..., recently recovered the remains of 1st Lt. Nathan Baskind, who was killed in Normandy near Utah Beach in 1944. In June 1944, Baskind was assigned to Company C, 899th Tank Destroyer Battalion, as a platoon commander of four M-10 tank destroyers. According to historical war records, 1st Lt. Baskind and another man from his company were scouting ahead of their tank destroyers when enemy forces descended upon them in an ambush. The other soldier, heavily wounded, escaped the firefight and made his way back to the main U.S. force, believing Baskind was killed in the attack. Several attempts were made to retrieve Baskind's body from the ambush point, but they could not locate his remains. Following the end of the war, the American Graves Registration Command (AGRC) was tasked with investigating and recovering missing American personnel in Europe. Investigators discovered a death and burial report for 1st Lt. Baskind among the foreign records recovered from the Germans, evidently filed after the war on May 29, 1945, in Meiningen, Germany. The record revealed 1st Lt. Baskind was captured and later died at a hospital for German air force personnel near Cherbourg on June 23, 1944. German forces then buried him in the military cemetery in the city. In early 1948, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) sent the U.S. Army one of 1st Lt. Baskind's identification tags. It is believed the German government likely submitted the tag to the ICRC, along with a death and burial report, following the war. In November 1957, the Volksbund, the German War Grave Commission, contacted the U.S. Army regarding 1st Lt. Baskind. While disinterring a mass grave of what were believed to be 24 Germans buried in the Cherbourg cemetery, a Volksbund team discovered one of 1st Lt. Baskind's identification tags and remnants of an American-type shirt with a first lieutenant rank and tank destroyer insignia. The remains in the mass grave were commingled, and the German team was unable to separate them into individual sets. The German investigators therefore placed the remains in seven burial pouches and then re-interred them in the Marigny German War Cemetery, 40 miles south of Cherbourg. Subsequent attempts to identify the remains of 1st Lt. Baskind by U.S. and German investigators were not successful. In 2023, the Volksbund and other interested private research organizations exhumed the commingled remains from Marigny War Cemetery for analysis. By February 2024, these researchers contacted DPAA to inform the agency that 1st Lt. Baskind's remains had been analyzed by a private U.S. laboratory and sought DPAA's concurrence. To verify Baskind's remains, scientists from the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System reviewed the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), Y chromosome DNA (Y-STR), and autosomal DNA (auSTR) analysis previously performed. 1st Lt. Baskind's name is recorded on the Walls of the Missing at Normandy American Cemetery, an American Battle Monuments Commission site in Colleville-sur-Mer, France, along with the others still missing from World War II. A rosette will be placed next to his name to indicate he has been accounted for. We also talk with veterans about whom they remember on Memorial Day. 80TH D-DAY: POINTE DU HOC: 6/8: Dog Company: The Boys of Pointe du Hoc — the Rangers Who Landed at D-Day and Fought Across Europe,by Patrick K. O'Donnell, with John Pruden as narrator. Blackstone Audio, Inc. Audible Audiobook – Unabridged https://www.amazon.com/Dog-Company-Patrick-K-O-Donnell-audiobook/dp/B00A2ATV1W/ref=tmm_aud_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= It is said that the right man in the right place at the right time can mean the difference between victory and defeat. This is the dramatic story of 68 soldiers in the US Army's Second Ranger Battalion, Company D — "Dog Company" — who made that difference, time and again. From D-day, when German guns atop Pointe du Hoc threatened the Allied landings and the men of Dog Company scaled the sheer 90-foot cliffs to destroy them; to the slopes of Hill 400, in Germany's Hürtgen Forest, where the Rangers launched a desperate bayonet charge across an open field; to a "quiet" section of the Ardennes, where Dog Company suddenly found itself on the tip of the spear at the Battle of the Bulge; the men of Dog Company made the difference. 1944 UTAH BEACH
Irving Locker was only 19 when he was called up to fight in World War II. He'd never even left his village in New Jersey. So when he stormed the Normandy beaches with 150,000 of his fellow soldiers, June 6, 1944 became the most important day of his life. The young Jewish American landed at Utah Beach and went on to play a part in the liberation of the Gardelegen Concentration Camp, about 100 miles west of Berlin. Locker will shortly turn 100 and is making what might be his last trip to France to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Our correspondent Fanny Allard met with him in Florida before he left. This is his story.
The man you just heard was CBS news reporter Robert Trout. Born in Wake County, North Carolina on October 15th, 1909, he grew up in Washington, D.C., entering broadcasting in 1931 as an announcer at WJSV, an independent station in Alexandria, Virginia. In the summer of 1932 WJSV was acquired by CBS, bringing Trout into the young network. He soon became an invaluable member of William S. Paley's team, and was the first person to publicly refer to FDR's radio programs as Fireside Chats. On Sunday night, March 13th, 1938, after Adolf Hitler's Germany had annexed Austria in the Anschluss, Trout hosted a shortwave "roundup" of reaction from multiple cities in Europe—the first such multi-point live broadcast on network radio. Years later, journalist Ned Calmer remembered that moment. Trout also played a key role in Edward R. Murrow's development as a broadcaster. By the time war had come to the US, Trout was in New York and Murrow had put together the staff of international war correspondents known as the Murrow Boys. At 4:15 AM eastern war time on the morning of Tuesday June 6th, 1944, Bob Trout was in the CBS newsroom at 485 Madison Avenue emceeing an overnight broadcast that brought the first eye witness account of the invasion from reporter Wright Bryan. Bryan stood an imposing six-foot-five and covered the story from a transport plane dropping airborne troops. Later in 1944 Bryan was wounded and captured by the Germans. He spent six months in hospitals and in a POW camp in Poland before being freed by Russian troops in January 1945. This broadcast took listeners up to 5 AM. eastern war time. Along with Wright Bryan, it featured analysis from George Fielding Elliot, commentary by Quentin Reynolds, and reports from John W. Vandercook and James Willard. At 5AM over CBS Major George Fielding Elliot gave an analysis of the known information. Elliot was a second lieutenant in the Australian army during World War I. He became a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and later a major in the Military Intelligence Reserve of the US Army. He wrote fifteen books on military and political matters and was a longtime staff writer for the New York Herald Tribune. After Elliot spoke, Richard C. Hottelet reported from London with the first eye witness account of the seaborne side of the invasion. Edward R. Murrow hired Hottelet that January. On this day he was riding in a bomber that attacked Utah Beach six minutes before H-Hour and watched the first minutes of the attack. He would later cover the Battle of the Bulge. At 7AM French time, the Allies began deploying amphibious tanks on the beaches of Normandy to support the ground troops and sweep for defensive mines. American troops faced heavy machine-gun fire on Omaha Beach, the most heavily fortified landing point of the invasion. Roughly twenty-five-hundred U.S. soldiers were killed on the beach in the bloodiest fight of the day. This fighting took the timeline to Eisenhower's official announcement at 3:32 Eastern War time.
In this episode Sean and James discuss Band of Brothers Episode 2: Day of Days. On June 6, 1944, Easy Company parachutes into Normandy but is scattered and many land miles away from their designated drop zones. Most of Easy reconnects, but its company commander, First Lieutenant Thomas Meehan, is missing and presumed dead, so Winters assumes command as its highest-ranking officer. He successfully leads a small group of men in destroying German artillery emplacements firing on Utah Beach from Brécourt Manor despite the German defending force being larger. Winters also captures a map of all German artillery emplacements in Normandy. Winters and several other Easy Company members earn combat decorations for their part in the attack. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4747725/advertisement

Of the 450 men in US Army VII Corps HQ, only one spoke French—Ned Arceneaux, from Lafayette. As the Quartermaster for his unit, Ned was in charge of precuring all the supplies. When they landed on Utah Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944, Ned's French-speaking abilities proved invaluable to his commanding officers and to his comrades. He served as an interpreter for Gen. J. Lawton Collins, known as “Lighting Joe,” one of the senior leaders in the European Theater during WWII.

On June 6th, 1944, all the planning of Operation Overlord would be put to the test when over 120,000+ Allied soldiers stormed the beaches of Normandy, France. Their goal was to establish a foothold in occupied France that would allow them to begin pushing the Nazi's back. Standing in their way was Hitler's Atlantic Wall. What took place that day can only be described as the most pivotal point in WW2 as thousands of paratroopers dropped behind enemy lines and infantry stormed the beaches beginning what would be the end for the Third Reich. Tune in to hear about that nightmare of that day and the heroism that followed.
In 1944 the Axis powers of WW2 occupied nearly all of mainland Europe. With no army to fight on the ground in Europe, the Allies need a plan to take the fight to the Nazis. An operation the scale of which had never been seen and has yet to be seen since. To invade Europe would take more than soldiers putting their boots on French soil, you need tanks, vehicles, ammunition, food, medical supplies, clothes and everything else it takes to wage a war. Not to mention doing all of this and keeping it a secret. Overlord is arguably the single. most important military operation in history. Years of planning went into ensuring every detail was covered and every option explored. It turned the tide of WW2 in Europe and began the countdown to the end of the Third Reich.
A World War II Navy helmet brought to GBH's Antiques Roadshow, and used for years as a decorative planter, was revealed to be that of the US Naval officer in charge at Utah Beach during the allied landing in Normandy. Appraiser Jeff Shrader carefully inspected the helmet. What did his analysis along with an archived diary and other accounts from museum experts in two countries reveal about the full heroic story of this U.S. Naval Officer? Join host Adam Monahan as he discovers and memorializes the military life of the helmet's original owner.
A soldier's story. The box held a medal, a government form and a letter. It was the letter, a quick note home from a GI to his family, that drove Matt Carlson to find the rightful owners of the little package he bought at the flea market. So many things fell into place, as if it were meant to be, for Matt's displaced items to find it's way home and provide a renewed meaning for them. Richard Harvey, 74, admitted during a news interview that he fired off a “warning shot” from his .22 caliber rifle when he heard his wife allegedly arguing with the elderly pro-life activist. He then claims he tried to push away her clipboard and accidentally shot her in the front of her shoulder. Notably, the activist, who has not been named, claims she was shot in the back while leaving the residence. “I came out and she is screaming and having a great old time, and being told, I’m sure I heard at least a dozen times, ‘You’re trespassing, get off the property,'” Harvey told WoodTV’s News 8. He “fired a warning shot into a pine tree out front” and then went to “club away” the 84-year-old woman’s clipboard and the rifle “went off,” he said. Asked if he’s afraid of facing charges, the man told News 8, “It’s always possible, I mean I shot someone.” But Harvey remains in the clear as of Wednesday. The Michigan State Police are reportedly still looking into the matter and will forward the findings to the Ionia County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, where a decision will be made on potential charges. The activist was canvassing against a radical ballot proposal concerning abortion in Michigan, The Daily Wire reported. Right to Life Michigan said in a statement on Saturday that the woman was canvassing in her community of Lake Odessa, Michigan, when she was shot in the back while leaving a residence during a “heated conversation.” The woman the victim was speaking to before the shooting was Harvey’s wife, Sharon Harvey, according to the admitted shooter. The story is gaining attention in light of the Department of Justice‘s targeting of a pro-life activist and Catholic father of seven Mark Houck, who was arrested at his home in Pennsylvania on Friday by armed FBI argents over an alleged simple assault outside a Planned Parenthood clinic. The DOJ has also been sleeping on the dozens of attacks against pro-life pregnancy centers and churches by abortion extremists following the overturning of Roe v. Wade. https://thenationalpulse.com/2022/09/27/study-finds-mrna-vaccines-taint-breast-milk/ STUDY: COVID Vaccines Detected In 45% Of Breast Milk. Trace amounts of Moderna and Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccines were detected in new mothers’ breast milk, according to a study conducted by researchers at New York University. The report – “Detection of Messenger RNA COVID-19 Vaccines in Human Breast Milk” – was uploaded to JAMA Network Open, which is a project of the American Medical Association, on September 26th. Noting that “the initial messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine clinical trials excluded several vulnerable groups, including young children and lactating individuals,” the New York University Long Island School of Medicine’s study attempted to address the research gap by tracking levels of the vaccine in a cohort of breastfeeding women. The study analyzed the breastmilk of 11 healthy women, with five study participants receiving a Moderna COVID-19 shot and the remaining six receiving Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine. Researchers sampled breast milk for five days post vaccination, and trace amounts were detected in seven samples belonging to five different participants. Forty-five percent of study participants, therefore, saw COVID-19 vaccines taint their breastmilk. Of the samples containing trace amounts of COVID-19 vaccine mRNA, two participants received a Moderna vaccine and three participants received a Pfizer vaccine. The study follows the British government’s Department of Health and Social Care recommending against COVID-19 vaccines in pregnant and breastfeeding women, admitting that “sufficient reassurance of safe use of the vaccine” for the demographic “cannot be provided at the present time.” The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, however, still recommends offering COVID-19 mRNA vaccines to breastfeeding individuals at the time of this study’s publication. Other federal agencies have authorized the use of COVID-19 vaccines following a massive lobbying campaign launched by the pharmaceutical companies responsible for manufacturing the products. Additional studies into the vaccine have shown adverse effects on the health of its recipients, including altered menstrual cycles in women, lowered sperm count in men, and cardiovascular problems in children and young adults. https://dailycaller.com/2022/09/28/house-republicans-claudia-tenney-legislation-redirect-funds-irs-border-patrol/ House Republicans Introduce Legislation To Redirect Funds From IRS To Border Patrol House Republicans led by New York Rep. Claudia Tenney introduced legislation Wednesday to redirect funds intended for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) as the border crisis worsens. The legislation, first obtained by the Daily Caller, would rescind all of the unobligated funds under the Inflation Reduction Act, which Biden signed in July, for new IRS enforcement activities. These funds would be reappropriated for the CBP to hire additional agents to secure the Southern Border. Republicans have expressed particular concern about the more than $80 billion in new funding for the IRS, which will allow the agency to hire up to 87,000 new employees. Although Democrats claim the increased funding will increase federal revenue and allow Congress to pay down the federal debt, GOP officials argue that middle-class and poorer Americans will face more audits. “The Biden administration’s failure to secure the border and enforce our immigration laws has created an unmitigated disaster at our Southern Border that is impacting communities across the country. Meanwhile, President Biden and Democrats in Congress are ignoring the problem and instead giving tens of billions of dollars to the IRS so that they can audit an additional 700,000 working class Americans,” Tenney told the Caller before introducing the legislation. "Maybe worth talking at some point," Musk said to Pavlovski. It all began when Russell Brand was censored by YouTube, which led to Brand moving to the rival platform. Brand released a video talking about that censorship, which was over Covid vaccine information, and how YouTube leaves up videos that claim Covid vaccines are super effective, while taking down those that question it. https://twitter.com/i/status/1574861160502927385 - Play Video That piqued Musk's interest. One of the most widely read books of the 20th century is Viktor Frank's “Man's Search for Meaning.” In it, the author, a survivor of Nazi concentration camps during World War II, described his psychotherapeutic method to endure the most hellish experiences imaginable. One must hold onto a purpose in life and immersively imagine that outcome. Many have used Frankl's method, one of which was Harold Frank, a WW2 rifleman who survived a Nazi POW camp, a multi-day death march, thousands of tons of bombs detonating nearby, and starvation conditions that caused him to lose over 100 pounds. His combat began at D-Day in 1944: twenty-year-old PFC Harold Frank had moved as one with his battalion onto the shores of Utah Beach, pushing into France to cut off and blockade the pivotal Nazi-occupied deep-water port of Cherbourg. As a recognized crack shot with WW II's iconic American automatic rifle, Frank fought bravely across the bloody hedgerows of the Cotentin Peninsula. During the most intense fighting, Frank was ambushed and wounded in a deadly, nine-hour firefight with Germans. Taken prisoner and with a bullet lodged under one arm, Frank found himself dumped first in a brutal Nazi POW concentration camp, then shipped to a grueling work camp on the outskirts of Dresden, Germany, where the young PFC was exposed to the vengeance of a crumbling Nazi regime, the menace of a rapidly advancing Russian military—and the danger of thousands of Allied bombers screaming overhead during the firebombing of Dresden.Today's guest is historian Mark Hager, author of The Last of the 357th Infantry: Harold Frank's WWII Story of Faith and Courage. He builds on hundreds of hours of interviews with Frank, sharing the account of his journey as a child of the Great Depression to the bloody shores of the D-Day invasion, into the bowels of Nazi Germany, and back to the U.S. where as a young man Harold would spend years resolutely dealing with the lingering effects of starvation rations while determinedly building a new life—a life always mindful of the legacy of his POW experience and his faithful service in America's hard-fought war against Nazi aggression.
