Reports of violence in the workplace have escalated over the last 10 to 20 years, despite laws and rules that have been put in place to prevent these situations from happening. So, as a business owner, supervisor or manager, what can you do? Are you prepared to manage a situation once it starts? Better yet, do you know the warning signs and have a plan to deescalate the situation before it starts? Today on the MEMIC Safety Experts Podcast, Command Master Sergeant, United States Army Retired Bart Womack, author of the book, Embedded Enemy, and screenplay for the feature film of the same name, joins me to discuss the issue of workplace violence using his experience, expertise and knowledge from a survivor's perspective on insider threats. https://www.bartwomack.com/

It's a week after the thrilling 125th Army-Navy Game, but even after the game, we still love hearing stories from our fellow Soldiers and Sailors. During our time on USAA's Media Row, we had fascinating conversations with military vets and senior military leaders. We start with Maj. General Brett Sylvia, Commanding General of the Army's mighty 101st Airborne (Air Assault). He shared some history from this legendary unit and offered a glimpse at the lethal capability they're bringing into the future. We also had a good time talking with Army Special Forces veteran, football player and filmmaker Nate Boyer. He discussed his "late bloomer" path to the Army and football, and how his organization “Merging Vets and Players” brings vets together with former NFL athletes. He was joined by American Legion, Executive Director of Government Affairs Director and Marine Corps veteran Mario Marquez. who shared how The American Legion is not your grandfathers pub, but remains an awesome organization for veterans from every generation. We wrap our time on Media Row, with two vets and Senior Executives from the Army Navy Game's proud sponsor, USAA. Former Army Major Rob Braggs shared how service has become a family tradition and former Navy Captain Bill White shares some of his favorite military memories, including how we actually served on the same ship back in the 90s. Plus how USAA offers services that can truly help our nation's veterans live their best life. Though the Vietnam war had just ended, being part of the 101st fulfilled Woody's thrill-seeking behavior but sadly, it didn't end his troubles and he quickly became addicted to drugs and alcohol. He later recovered and started working as a corrections officer, which led him to become a sergeant on the SWAT unit where he finally found some sense of stability. However, addiction reared its ugly head and Woody spiraled into a life of crime, encountering a life or death situation, prison time, and a life-changing medical diagnosis. After years of being in the US and almost forgetting how to speak good, old Tagalog, we chat about his life in his second homeland. Andy takes us on a journey from enlistment to deployment as he explains his evolution from immigrant teenager to US soldier. He highlights the triumphs and tribulations—from passing his entrance exams to the isolation of duty in Europe. Andy humanizes the experience of young recruits, showing how the military builds character through extreme discipline. But he also reveals the toll of separation from family and friends. His open account provides civilians a vivid window into military life.

Today Sayre and Preston are joined by Leigh Freeman. Leigh served with C/2-506th IN, part of the 3rd Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War. Leigh talks about his experience as a nineteen-year-old infantry rifleman in the jungles of Vietnam. As the platoon's point man, Leigh was the man at the very front of the formation cutting brush with a machete, in search of the North Vietnamese Army. We also discussed with Leigh what his experience was like coming home, and how it felt to be a veteran of that era. We really enjoyed this conversation and discussed many aspects that come with a combat deployment.

General J. P. McGee called into the 18th Airborne Corps Podcast studio on Fort Bragg, North Carolina from his office in the headquarters of the 101st Airborne Division on Fort Campbell, Kentucky. During his discussion with host Joe Buccino, General McGee reflected on his first four months commanding one of our Nation's most prestigious military units. For the first time in years, the entire 101st Airborne Division is on Fort Campbell, with no scheduled deployment. This is a critical moment for the Screaming Eagles: with the threat of large scale combat looming and a changing Army landscape, it's time to reflect and change. General McGee explains that he's using the opportunity to develop a culture of trained, disciplined, fit, cohesive units ready to win the future fight.  General McGee also discussed his recent role as director of the Army's Talent Management Task Force. In that position, he transformed the way the service evaluates battalion and brigade commanders through a new assessment program. He offers insights into the Army's focus on revolutionizing the way it selects and develops leaders. General McGee also offers some recommended reading for Army leaders, discusses the people and events that shaped him as a leader, and explains why the 101st Airborne is the Nation's premier warfighting force. Episode 45 of the 18th Airborne Corps Podcast is an important one for any Soldier currently serving in the 101st Airborne Division. The episode also offers insight for all Army leaders, as well as anyone interested in the Army's new talent management program. Jim “Pee Wee” Martin in Ohio, one of the “Toccoa Originals” and few surviving paratroopers of WWII sat down with Jason and Rich, along with a handful of GORUCK Cadre, for Episode 044 in Ohio. On June 6, 2014, the 70th anniversary of D-Day, Martin became the last WWII era American paratrooper to jump over Normandy at the age of 93, landing behind Utah Beach just as he had 70 years earlier. A frank storyteller with strong opinions, Mr. Martin sprinkles his recollections with the greater history as well as personal anecdotes, and reminds that he is “just a representative of his unit.”  A child of the Depression, Martin entered the military in 1942 and volunteered for the 101st Airborne Division -- what became the Screaming Eagles. He and the original “Toccoa Men” went through intense training at Camp Toccoa, Georgia, where the 506th was formed under Colonel Robert F. Sink. Martin talks about his decision to serve and the culling process at Currahee mountain -- from 6500 to 1650 men over the first 6months -- with blunt honesty. Despite being the smallest in his unit at 103 pounds (hence “Pee Wee” as a nickname) he says the only worry was if he was going to be able to stay. The night before D-Day, June 6, 1944, Martin's company parachuted over Normandy and touched down in enemy-controlled territory behind Utah Beach. They fought for 43 days as part of the Normandy campaign -- including in “Bloody Gulch” -- before moving on to invade Holland; holding the line in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge; and finishing off by taking Berchtesgaden, site of Hitler's “Eagle's Nest” redoubt in the German Alps. Martin celebrated his 100th birthday this year with a mass parachute drop -- including two of his granddaughters -- using vintage aircraft in a tribute to his place in history and his community. He talks about returning to Ohio in a time of continued rationing, marrying Donna (his wife of 72years before she passed two years ago) and building a life for them and their 5 children. He says that while he rarely thinks about his service “except during talks like this” because he and his fellows “had more important things to do” he shares many memories from his unique perspective.  Links: Jim Martin's Facebook Page Battle of Bloody Gulch “Jim "Pee Wee" Martin - Airborne Soldier” video by U.S. Army Broadcasting (2014) Mark Bando's 101st Airborne - the Screaming Eagles at Normandy Maj. 06JUN1944: CPT Frank Lillyman boarded his aircraft in late on the night of June 5th, 1944. In a few short hours, he would be the first American Soldier to land in France, kicking off Operation Overlord. Lillyman commanded the Pathfinder Company of the 101st Airborne Division. His daunting task was to lead a team that would land nearly 30 minutes before the main assault and mark the drop zones for the inbound pilots. Entering enemy airspace, Lillyman's plane dropped low and at only 450 feet elevation, he and his men exited the craft into the dark Normandy sky. Landing at 12:15 on the morning of June 6th, Lillyman and his men got right to work. Recognizing they were dropped nearly a mile from their intended target, they improvised. Finding a suitable location, he and his pathfinders went about marking the DZ in the little time that they had. A nearby church steeple caught his eye as a great location for their Eureka homing beacon. After breaking the incredible news to the priest that he had been liberated, Lillyman's team set up the beacon and began their wait. The team then learned of an enemy 20mm antiaircraft gun near their landing zone that could devastate the incoming paratroopers. Lillyman moved to the farm where a Frenchman pointed inside to the enemy location. After eliminating the soldier, the sound of American aircraft could be heard in the distance. Lillyman and his pathfinders turned on their lights to guide the aircraft in and at 12:57 the first wave landed, the invasion of Normandy was underway. CPT Frank Lillyman would be called upon later that day to again mark landing zones for the much needed glider troops and their supplies. During these landings, Lillyman was wounded and sent back to England, ending his D-Day. Lillyman would work his way back to the front lines and survived the war. He stayed in the Army retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 1968 and passed away in 1971.

11JUL1969: SGT Gordon Roberts was a rifleman when his platoon was called upon to help relieve one of their sister companies that was pinned down nearby. As his platoon approached the enemy controlled hillside, they too were attacked by those same positions and were quickly immobilized by the volume of enemy machine gun fire. Seeing his men pinned down and recognizing that unless they reduced the threat, his sister company could be wiped out, SGT Roberts picked up and charged towards the first closest enemy bunker. Firing as he ran, he overcame the position and killed the two defenders. As he was alerting his men that the position was cleared, a second machine gun opened up with a round striking and destroying his rifle. Without hesitation, Roberts picked up an enemy AK-14 and continued his assault towards the second bunker. With rounds impacting all over, Roberts destroyed his second bunker of the day. From there he pushed further into the deadly enemy fire to destroy a third emplacement with grenades before linking up with the adjoining company they were tasked with assisting. As enemy fire continued to rain down all around, Roberts stayed with this unit to help evacuate casualties before making his way back to his platoon. For taking out the fortified enemy positions that were about to wipe out his platoon and a sister company, SGT Gordon Roberts would be awarded the Medal of Honor. Roberts would survive the war and would exit the service after three years in 1971. He would earn a direct commission in 1991, return to service and retired from active duty in 2012.
