He served 10 years at SEAL Teams with SEAL Team Five, deploying to Iraq and the United Arab Emirates, after which he helped develop the Combatives Instructor Course to train SEALs how to lead training for their own platoons. He spent time in Denmark training Danish Frogmen, and shortly after launched his own swimwear line with 2-time ESPY award-winning adaptive athlete Kyle Maynard called Sunga Life. He even spent time working with friend of the show (and former #156 guest) Rudy Reyes over at Force Blue, developing a community of veterans to help aid in the protection of our planet's marine resources.  Since then, he's been busy - he appeared on Mike Tyson's podcast, worked with Jake Paul in his Boxing Bullies initiative, and even appeared on a South Korean game show (yes, really) called 'Iron Squad 3.' So what's it like spinning up an athletic apparel company after serving in SEAL teams? How did Jeff (and his fellow Special Forces crew) fare against the best of the best in South Korea? Retired Recon Marine Rudy Reyes has got quite the resumé. He's a wildly popular Call of Duty character, he played himself on HBO's Generation Kill, he hosts Special Forces: The World's Toughest Test on FOX - and that's just the popular stuff. He even founded a veteran nonprofit, Force Blue, that's dedicated to changing the world through ocean conservation, all while helping veterans along the way. Some might say Rudy's 'gone Hollywood', but pushing celebrities to their limits every week on national television isn't exactly a soft gig. Rudy Reyes is a retired Recon Marine, and a current actor on Fox's show Special Forces: The Ultimate Test and SAS: Who Dares Wins. He is also an author of 2 books, including Hero Living, and founder and supporter of Force Blue a conservation organization gear towards cleaning and protecting the world coral reefs. At the age of 18, he then began to study martial arts, training in Kung-Fu, eventually winning the title of International Jing Woo Martial Art College Champion, multiple times. In sum, his martial art achievements are over 20 medals, 14 of which were gold. He worked various jobs, from construction to table bussing, while simultaneously training as a kickboxer, in an effort to provide stability and discipline for himself and his brothers (who he also got into kickboxing.)In 1998, Rudy found himself watching a film covering orphans in Kosovo who's parents were killed by their own countries snipers. Rudy, at the age of 26, was so compelled to do something to help, decided to enlist in the United States Marine Corps (USMC).Rudy enlisted in the USMC as a infantryman, and graduated as the honour grad and iron man of Boot Camp and School of Infantry. Rudy, due to his merit and initiative, was granted an opportunity to try out for Recon. The Reconnaissance Marine Community is 300 strong, between 5 units, making it the most prestigious and difficult group in a Marine Corps of 300,000. A group that no man may sign up to join but must be invited and prove their worthiness to earn the title of a United States Recon Marine. After being a special forces operator for three years, during which Rudy became a “schooled-out“ (paratrooper, combat diver, demolitions expert, scout sniper, closed quarter combatant, and SERE trained) Recon Marine, Rudy was called for his first combat reconnaissance mission in 2001 in Pakistan – a preparation mission for USA's Special Ops insertion to Afghanistan. Once the war officially started, his team ran operations that located and destroyed Al Qaeda within Afghanistan. After leaving the military, Rudy spent time in Africa where he trained wildlife preserve rangers in anti-poaching tactics and later went on to found ‘Force Blue' a Veteran Non Profit which pairs former Special Operators with Marine Scientists to work rebuilding and restoring coral reefs, saving turtles, and working within the conservation community. He also competes and trains people for Adventure Racing and Martial Arts.  In 2008, Rudy appeared on the HBO miniseries Generation Kill, aseven-part series based on Rolling Stone reporter Evan Wright's 2004 book of the same name. Rudy plays himself, depicting his time as a member of the lead combat force that entered both Afghanistan and Iraq. He also has worked on many survival shows, Apocalypse Man and Ultimate Survivor Alaska. He was also one of the main contributors for multiple BAFTA nominated documentary series Once Upon a Time in Iraq which was also nominated for an Emmy. He most recently can be found hosting UK Show SAS: Who Dares Wins and the new American version Special Forces: The Ultimate Test

Force Blue is the only non-profit organization in the world that retrains and redeploys former Special Operations veterans and military-trained combat divers to assist in marine and coral reef conservation efforts and whose mission is to restore lives and the planet. It is made up of some incredible humans, three of whom we spoke with today: co-founder of Force Blue, Jim Ritterhoff, scientist and author of Blue Mind, J. Nichols, and retired Navy Seal Master Chief, Steve Gonzalez. All three of these environmental activists and advocates are part of an incredible project that was highlighted during two consecutive Super Bowls in the documentary 100 Yards of Hope. We couldn't be more thrilled to have spoken with them today to share our joint passion for conservation, service, health, and healing. Later during a security contracting gig in Kabul he started a side-gig which became the first CrossFit affiliate at an embassy. That experience shifted his focus to people-centered business and he returned to start a successful gym stateside. Who is Rudy Reyes? That's probably the most common question asked of the former Force Recon Marine. The Drinkin Bros call him the "Murder Hippie", the characters of HBO's Generation Kill lovingly called him Fruity Rudy, and the US Marine Corps called him Sergeant. But if you have the opportunity to meet him, he'll probably tell you he's a conservationist dedicating his time and energy to restoring Earth's struggling coral reef's with a crew of former special operators in an organization called Force Blue. Whatever the answer, one thing is for certain - Rudy is a survivor. I was honored to have Rudy on the show where we waxed philosophical about self-healing, honesty, facing your demons and personal growth. Rudy gave an energetic interview which was honest and genuine and I think you'll enjoy it as much as I did.  Please check out www.IrreverentWarriors.com for upcoming Silkies Hikes and for the soon to be released 2020 hike schedule. FORCE BLUE is the only nonprofit organization in the world that provides “mission therapy” for former combat divers — individuals in whom governments around the world have invested millions to create the best possible underwater and maritime operators — by retraining, retooling and deploying them on missions of conservation, preservation and restoration. By uniting the community of Special Operations veterans with the world of marine science and conservation in one, mission-focused program, FORCE BLUE has created a model of caring, cooperation and positive change with the power to restore lives and restore the planet. Harkening back to the days of Jacques Cousteau and the French Commando frogmen he trained, FORCE BLUE is creating a modern-day cadre of elite combat veterans with the aptitude and ability to achieve great things on the conservation front, and the visibility to let the world actually know about it. FORCE BLUE training director, and former US Navy diver, Angelo Fiore talks about the mission and about being a Navy diver with host Jim Fausone.

For today’s guest, we are very excited to bring you the real Rudy Reyes. From MMA, to many tours in Afghanistan and Iraq with the Marine’s 1st Recon Battalion, to your TV, and finally to conservation sites all over the world this man has done it all. I really enjoyed this my conversation with this man. It changed the way I thought about myself and others. We go over a lot of good stuff, from the journey from selfless to self-love, to finding your new purpose, and how to fight off the tendency to isolate when it comes up. We go over what was difficult for Rudy to handle when getting out, his nonprofit work with Force Blue, and the greatest lesson he learned since leaving the Recon community. Listen to what Rudy has to tell you, I know it is going to change your perspective. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did.
