On this dig back into a past Holiday special, Doug has no idea why the deadbeat dad in this film is so obsessed with the little girl living next door, Jamie reveals that her husband may have something wrong with him because of his childhood fondness for this movie, and we both warn listeners to steer clear of any Christmas Angel that looks like Harry Dean Stanton. Sink all your money into a sure-to-fail bike shop, don't let that cashier charge you for Doritos you didn't buy, and join us as we wonder how murdering a character's family before their eyes helps them embrace the Christmas spirit as we discuss, One Magic Christmas!Visit our YouTube ChannelMerch on TeePublic Follow us on TwitterFollow on InstagramFind us on FacebookVisit our Website
Welcome back to The Video Store Podcast, where each week I recommend four films I think you should check out. This week, I've picked a mix of holiday movies that range from heartwarming to hilariously chaotic. Whether you're looking for some nostalgia, laughs, or a little Christmas chaos, these films have something to offer. First up is…One Magic Christmas (1985)This film has a quiet charm that's perfect for the holiday season. Starring Mary Steenburgen, it tells a story of family, second chances, and finding the true spirit of Christmas. What's interesting about the movies is how grounded it feels, even with its supernatural elements. One of my favorite bit of casting in this film is Harry Dean Stanton, who plays a guardian angel, a role that feels tailor-made for his calm, understated presence.Mixed Nuts (1994)This is a screwball Christmas comedy that might not have gotten the love it deserved when it came out. Directed by Nora Ephron, it has an incredible ensemble cast that includes Steve Martin, Madeline Kahn, Rita Wilson, and even a young Adam Sandler. The movie is set at a suicide crisis hotline office during the holidays, which makes for plenty of chaotic, offbeat humor. The film's quirky tone might feel unusual, but if you stick with it, there are a lot of funny moments. The soundtrack is also worth mentioning, featuring Louis Armstrong's version of “Christmas in New Orleans” and an original song by Sandler, among many others. The Ref (1994)With an apt working title of, Hostile Hostages, this dark comedy, which stars Denis Leary, Judy Davis, and Kevin Spacey is one of those Christmas movies that focuses on dysfunction. Leary plays a thief who ends up stuck with a bickering married couple on Christmas Eve, and the results are sharp, biting, and weirdly festive. It is a strange combo, but The Ref somehow manage to balance its humor with just enough heart. Trapped in Paradise (1994)This one leans more into the slapstick side of comedy, with Nicolas Cage, Jon Lovitz, and Dana Carvey as three brothers who get caught up in a bank heist in a small town during Christmas. The small-town setting adds a proper holiday feel, but the movie's about as chaotic as you'd expect with this cast. Although weird, the chaos is not centered around Cage for a change. He gives a grounded performance. Nicolas Cage has said in interviews that filming this movie was a challenge due to constant rewrites and freezing temperatures on location in Ontario, Canada. Despite the problems on the set, the end result, has a charm that makes it worth revisiting. Those are my recommendations for the holiday season. They are four holiday movies that have a solid mix of magic, dysfunction, and comedy. I hope you'll give one (or all) of them a shot this season. Let me know what you think, and I'll see you soon for more recommendations on the Video Store Podcast. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! It's the most wonderful time of the year again, and as tradition dictates, we find the NFG crew gathered around the fire, trimming the tree, sipping cocoa, and discussing the darkest Christmas movie since "One Magic Christmas". Unlike "One Magic Christmas", "The Holdovers" does not feature gunfire, and is actually really really really good. Join us on our jolly jaunt back to the 2nd hand smoke filled Christmas of 1970, as we discuss a wonderfully human tale of humans finding the humanity in each other, and not being sure which of Paul Giamatti's eyes to focus on while we talk to him.
It's a New Year, and a NEW MXD! Episode 67: The Curse of La Llorona (2019)! We talk resolutions, getting robbed by magicians, doves, humans, all the good stuff! Plus Fork N Film, One Magic Christmas, executive fraud, debating the very fabric of the Conjuring Universe, why millennial parents fear kidnappings, hot garbage, silent creeps and SO much more!
Happy Holidays to you and yours from all of us at the Medfield College Film Society! This week the society celebrates the holidays by being thankful for not having tragic lives and watching 1985's One Magic Christmas, a movie that lives innocently enough on Disney Plus. Ever wonder what it would be like if everything was wrenched away from you in the cold tundra of Ontario? Well, if you don't want to find out, you'd better believe in Santa. If you do want to find out, check out this film with us.Follow us on social media @medfieldfilm
Have you ever wondered if the Christmas movies of our youth still hold up under the harsh light of adulthood? Join Ana Santos and Jimmy Coates, as they embark on a critical and nostalgic exploration of the 1985 holiday film "One Magic Christmas. They promise to unearth whether this Christmas tale, with its darker edges, still carries the same enchantment or if our grown-up eyes see a different story altogether. Our lively discussion compares the struggles of Ginny Granger to those of George Bailey from "It's a Wonderful Life," but with a twist that's undeniably grimmer. We dissect the film's attempt to address real-world issues like unemployment and financial strife amidst the pursuit of holiday cheer, all while we laugh at some of the film's more peculiar choices—like an angel playing a harmonica in a tree and creepily hanging around children.Settle in for a candid conversation that tugs at the heartstrings and tickles the funny bone as they analyze the portrayal of parenting in the '80s, the societal views on poverty, and the performances that bring the Granger family's story to life. We scrutinize the tension between maintaining festive spirits and confronting the sobering realities many face during the holiday season. Their debate on the movie's themes is as much an appreciation of its cinematic attempts as it is a reflection on the effectiveness of its storytelling. We wrap things up with our final thoughts on "One Magic Christmas." Does this film, with its somber undercurrents, ultimately succeed in its late-game swing at holiday joy, or does it fall short of being a seasonal staple? They share their insights into the film's poignant resolution, the emotional resonance of its cinematic qualities, and whether it truly deserves a spot in your holiday viewing rotation. Whether you're a longtime fan or a curious newcomer to this yuletide story, our episode promises to provide a fresh and engaging perspective on the enduring impact of Christmas cinema.Do You Remember Liking This Movie?

"Did you do this for the Christmas?" - Don Cheadle in Boogie Nights Hey kids, remember when Santa Claus enslaved the dead to toil in his factory for all eternity? Well, special guest Jack Rourke (Warped Celluloid) certainly does. He's joining Dallin Agatone and Amanda Dutkiewicz to discuss 1985's One Magic Christmas, one of the most low-key disturbing Christmas movies ever made. Join them as they discuss such topics as the Epic Looks of Harry Dean Stanton, the misery that capitalism inflicts on the Christmas season, and just how exactly to effectively tell a message in a movie. That is, when Jack is completely derailing things with off-topic ramblings at a mile-a-minute pace. Merry Christmas eveyone! In this episode, Jamie wants to get to the bottom of why exactly Mr. and Mrs. Claus can't conceve, Doug comes off as an idiot by not knowing that Santa is basically the same as Saint and also comes off as kind of a weird monster when he basically condones the kidnapping of homeless children. Come along as we try so hard to navigate our way through a movie that tells the history of Santa, while also focussing on a disgruntled elf, a homeless boy, a neglected rich girl, a reindeer who is afraid of heights, a greedy toymaker, the Senate sub committee...Holy hell, there's a lot going on here! Happy holidays, listeners! As a little treat, we'd like to give you a bonus episode for the holiday season: a collection of interviews with the cast and composer of Disney's One Magic Christmas. It includes a full version of our chat with the lovely Elisabeth Harnois, who played Abbie Grainger, as well as new interviews with Rob Magwood, who played her older brother, Cal, and the celebrated composer Michael Conway Baker, who provided the score. All of them were a delight to speak to and so generous with their time, sharing hilarious and heartwarming memories from the making of the movie. We hope you all have a wonderful holiday season, sharing time with loved ones however you can while keeping safe. We're trying something new for this holiday season. Your No Flicks Given heroes are coming face-to-face with one of the worst, my depressing Christmas movies in recent memory: One Magic Christmas. And this isn't a journey we can all take alone, so we're taking you all with us. Listen in as we react live to watching a truly ridiculous store brand classic. Joined once again by Connor & Peter of the Fix-a-Flick podcast, we give you a Give it 5 first - a commentary track of a truly awful movie experience.Ginny (Mary Steenburgen) has a difficult time mustering Christmas spirit due to her husband Jack's unemployment and her humble position as a grocery store clerk. With the holiday fast approaching, Ginny and Jack's daughter goes to deliver her letter to Santa. On her way, she meets Gideon, an angel intent on saving Christmas from Ginny's poor attitude. With Gideon's magical assistance, Ginny learns how things could be much worse....happy holidays, we guess.
As it is Christmas we've decided to celebrate the festive season on the podcast by watching a largely forgotten Disney film from 1985. One Magic Christmas positions itself as being a wonderful tale of Christmas but it is northing short of a depressing horror story. Where Santa decides, in order to teach the message of Christmas to a mother played by Mary Steenburgen, he needs to take some rather extreme and drastic steps. By showing her just how tough Christmas can actually be. This is all watched over by the most unlikely angel possible Harry Dean Stanton. After you've experienced One Magic Christmas you'll never quite experience Christmas in the same way again. All this and more on Adjust Your Tracking! We're fully into the holiday season and chase Slysgiving with the Brarbara Streisand passion project Yentl to celebrate Hanukkah. On this episode, we discover Doug's refusal to swim in a 'piss pond', get some information about Jamie's old audition process, and try in all honesty to figure out what everyone who meets Yentl/Ansel thinks is actually going on there. Doug's movie tastes become increasingly complex, and he's angry about it as we continue our run of pretty fun movies (excluding Dune) with Yentl! After a week off, our boys are back! They kick off the episode discussing one of the weirdest Christmas movies ever, "One Magic Christmas" and move on to talk about "Big Mouth" season 4, Three Jokers, and two episodes of "The Mandalorian"
To get a bit of festive cheer, Dan and Conrad explore Disney's One Magic Christmas, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year. But this is from Disney's 'dark period', so they're in for a shock. A harmonica-playing stalking angel played by Harry Dean Stanton teaches depressed working mum Ginnie Grainger (Mary Steenburgen) to appreciate the holiday season by forcing her to live a nightmarish alternate Christmas Eve in which her whole family is slaughtered in a bungled bank robbery. We kid you not. For all that, it turns out to be one of Conrad's favourite Christmas movies, and has a social realism and heartwarming message that marks it out from your standard Hallmark special. It also features some stellar performances, including that of special guest Elisabeth Harnois, who shares her memories of playing little Abbie Grainger at the tender age of 5! The result is – dare we say it – quite magical! Happy holidays! Want a feel-good holiday movie to brighten your day? Don't watch this one unless you want to drag yourself through the most depressing holiday film you may possibly ever watch. A woman must experience the worst things that could happen to her before understanding the magic of Christmas. Meanwhile, her angle sits in a tree across the street playing his harmonica wondering what her problem is. Oh, and Santa is kind of a creep. Lee and Joe discuss this depressing holiday film and decide if it still holds up.
The X-Games are super dumb but we have an idea to make them at least a bit better. We appreciate the progressive sexuality of this Mad Max film and how much it leans into the S&M scene. We discuss futuristic dog fashion, are confused by basic engineering of how you extract oil from the ground and spot an Amish Road Warrior. Also, Jamie looked in vain for Tina Turner for an hour and a half. A sequel that removes Guttenberg and Ally Sheedy (basically all the charm) so Doug and Jamie are stuck with Fischer Stevens and a robot devoid of humor and personality. Cynthia Gibb is given nothing to do but Doug and Jamie would watch a different film starring she and the cab driver, with whom she has the most chemistry. Fisher Stevens in brown face may strangely be one of the least offensive things about this movie. Just kidding, that's terrible even by 1988 standards. Film critic Peter Sobczynski joins Collin and Kerry as they look at one of more curious items of the Disney canon, 1985's unflinchingly dark "One Magic Christmas," featuring Harry Dean Stanton as a Christmas angel who likes to pay visits to children in the middle of the night. The "We Just Say Book" discussion gets especially spirited as they talk about "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover" (1990), "The Paleface" (1948) and "The Biter Tea of General Yen" (1932).
Julia and Geoffrey watch commercials for the Ramada Inn (since that’s where Ginny Grainger grew up in One Magic Christmas), and also commercials about Christmas, including the infamous Folgers incest one...But first we talk about a couple of things we forgot to mention in the main episode. Specifically the way it, like many other things we saw growing up, referenced The Honeymooners. This was a show we never watched, but understood to be about a married couple, and the … joke … was that the husband habitually threatened his wife with violence. Grrrrreat. Anyway, we wondered how on earth this movie was advertised to people, so we tried looking up a trailer, but what we could find labeled as a trailer was just this clip of Harry Dean Stanton watching the kids’ hockey game. we concluded that this wasn’t a trailer, but also that if you did see it, you’d still have no idea what the movie was actually about. We also found this spoof trailer someone recut to make it look like a horror movie. But honestly, the actual movie is scarier for the cold hard bleakness of life in that town.Eventually we found this behind the scenes making of preview from the Disney Channel. Harry Dean Stanton says it should have an uplifting effect. The director says it’s based on a true story, which is that when he was a kid he saw Santa in a farmhouse in Canada. The trailer they cut together here makes it look like this is a movie about a girl who really believes Santa is real and then gets to meet him. Which is true, but elides the bulk of the movie, which is focused on the deeply depressing town. We finally had a short phone call with Julia’s mother to find out what she thought of the movie before moving on to our commercial viewing. This movie had a bunch of product placement for the Ramada Inn, so naturally we started with this 1985 Christmas commercial for a Ramada Inn in Ontario. Then we watched this commercial from 1979.Nice people. Taking care of nice people.Next we looked up some of the people in One Magic Christmas. We learned that Harry Dean Stanton was also a musician, so we watched a clip of him playing and singing “Red River Valley” from the Twin Peaks reboot. Fair warning: someone says the F word at the end of this clip.Next we looked for some of Mary Steenburgen’s music, and we ended up finding this ten minute documentary about it. Gosharooney! Then we watched some general Christmas commercials from 1985. We started with Sears. And then we watched a classic Folgers ad.This led to Julia explaining the long internet history of people associating Folgers with incest and writing fanfic about it. But this clearly wasn’t the incest commercial, so we decided to hunt that down. There is in fact an updated version of the “Peter Comes Home” commercial. Does it imply incest? You decide! In the time between our recording this podcast and now, Gabriella Paiella has compiled a long oral history of the ad for GQ. We have our own theory about this commercial, and it involves aliens! Finally, we watched a Shoppers Drug Mart commercial from 1985, starring Bea Arthur! And that wraps up this Christmas special week! It’s Christmas time, and to celebrate, Julia and Geoffrey watch a movie that traumatized tiny Julia: One Magic Christmas. Here’s Julia’s summary before re-watching:“It’s Christmas time and there’s a family who maybe is having economical difficulties? Anyway, one day right before Christmas the dad gets shot, maybe at a bank or a grocery store that’s getting robbed? The entire rest of the movie is the family grieving and also trying to figure out how to deal with even more financial trouble now that Dad is dead. But eventually the little girl meets santa, who, I think makes them go back in time to stop the dad from getting shot? And like, that’s it. Merry Christmas! You’re a TINY bit less miserable now, I guess? Oh, and you can tell that the timeline changes because the Christmas lights on the houses flicker ominously.” And here is what Disney+ has to say about it:Image Description: Disney plus home screen for One Magic Christmas. In the still, Gideon, the Christmas angel holds the little girl, Abbie, while Abbie’s brother looks on. The description of the movie reads, “A young mother rediscovers the joy and beauty of Christmas thanks to the unshakable faith of her six-year-old daughter, Abbie, and Gideon, her very own guardian angel.”Mind you, this has been updated since Julia watched it in November, when the description was shorter. Here’s the picture of the Disney+ home screen for this movie on Julia’s TV a month ago:Image Description: A cell phone photo of the Disney+ home screen on Julia’s TV for One Magic Christmas from November 22nd, 2019. The description of the movie reads, “A young mother rediscovers the joy of Christmas thanks to the unshakable faith of her daughter.” So, apparently between November 22nd and December 23rd, Disney decided they needed to mention that there’s an angel involved. Okay… That … doesn’t really sound like what Julia remembers… What if we click for more details?Image Description: The details section of the Disney+ page for One Magic Christmas. The text reads, “Award-winning actress, Mary Steenburgen, gives a solid performance as Ginny Grainger, a young mother who rediscovers the joy and beauty of Christmas, thanks to the unshakable faith of her six-year-old daughter Abbie (Elizabeth Harnois) and Gideon (Harry Dean Stanton), Ginny’s very own guardian angel. Ginny’s wondrous experience will touch your heart and warm your soul in the timeless tradition of past Disney favorites. ONE MAGIC CHRISTMAS fulfills all your most treasured Christmas fantasies. Share it with those you love.”Also, if you select the Extras tab on Disney+, you get a clip of Abbie getting a tour of Santa’s workshop. So who’s right about this movie’s overall tone? You be the judge!Merry Christmas if you celebrate! And if you don’t celebrate Christmas, you probably aren’t going to have to work eternally in a factory after you die! Congratulations!P. S. According to Wikipedia, there are several alternative names for snow globes, but none of them is “glass ball”. And here are the plastic ball hair ties Julia talked about having as a kid (just like Abbie). If you’re having fun listening to us, please tell your friends about us! This week, the elves discuss “the final chapter in the greatest Santa story ever told” – The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause. Julia, Thom, and Anthony are unified in their overall opinions regarding this Disney threequel, as they answer two important questions: 1. Is this movie as good as its predecessors, or is it a film full of missed opportunities? And if it is the latter… 2. Is it as bad as some of the worst that we’ve covered, like One Magic Christmas and Santa’s Slay? Also discussed in this episode are the hosts’ favorite film and television versions of the North Pole!
Mary Steenburgen won't say "Merry Christmas," so Santa hires Harry Dean Stanton to kill her entire family in this ill-considered attempt at a heartwarming holiday classic by the Walt Disney Company.
Out-of-context quote from this episode: “She gets treated like the actual anti-christ BECAUSE SHE’S SAD! It’s absolutely crazy!” In this episode: Tripp rants about winter misery, Mary Steenburgen is real sad and almost reveals a horrifying truth to children, a … Continue reading →
Sarah Polley began her career in film at the age of four, appearing in the Disney movie ONE MAGIC CHRISTMAS. After her roles in Atom Egoyan’s THE SWEET HEREAFTER, Terry Gilliam’s THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN and Doug Liman's GO gained her attention as an emotionally intuitive and intelligent young actor, she attended the Director’s Lab at the Canadian Film Centre in 2001. Polley’s first feature AWAY FROM HER, an adaption of the Alice Munro short story “The Bear Came over the Mountain,” which she wrote and directed, nabbed her a nomination for “Best Adapted Screenplay” at the 2008 Academy Awards. Her follow-up films, 2011’s TAKE THIS WALTZ and the 2012 documentary STORIES WE TELL (all of which have premiered at TIFF) have cemented the filmmaker as one of Canada’s most indelible auteurs. In this episode of TIFF Un/cut, you’ll hear Sarah Polley interviewed onstage by documentary programmer Thom Powers in a discussion originally conducted for the 2012 Industry Doc Conference when STORIES WE TELL premiered at TIFF. They discuss the knotty complexities of revealing family secrets, how to show many sides of one story, and why documentary is her favourite medium. Sarah Polley’s newest project, a forthcoming miniseries adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s 1996 novel ALIAS GRACE on which she serves as showrunner and executive producer, will premiere at TIFF ‘17 with the series’ star Sarah Gadon and director Mary Harron in attendance.
On the final Summer Rewind of the year, the gang reminisces about their favorite holiday special, the episode on One Magic Christmas! How in the world did something so depressing qualify as a Christmas film? Who thought casting the legendary Harry Dean Stanton as an angel was a good idea—give that person a raise! And did that dude really say "Doritachips"? PLUS: Santa the evil necromancer! One Magic Christmas stars Mary Steenburgen, Harry Dean Stanton, Elias Koteas, and Sarah Polley; directed by Phillip Borsos.
As the song goes, Christmas is "the most wonderful time of the year." In spite of the cold, the slush and the sun setting around mid-afternoon the days still feel warm and bright - at least for those who have Christmas spirit. And those who don't...woe betide you; as Mary Steenburgen learns in a movie that proves once again Disney had no idea what the hell they were doing in the 1980s. Because in One Magic Christmas, the way to get a woman struggling to keep herself and her family afloat in tough times to start feeling Christmas cheer (aka blow their meager savings on presents) is to send a grim Christmas Angel of Death to literally kill her family. This week on We Want The D, Vicky is rendered virtually speechless, Nolan becomes so enraged he can't stop yelling, and Jill delights in the fact that she's added two more people to the list of those that have been tortured by a film she inexplicably watched multiple times throughout her childhood. Merry Christmas, D Lovers!

Who knew a Disney Christmas film would be so dark?! Harry Dean Stanton as a mysterious angel in black, home foreclosures, bank robberies, dead parents, poverty and industrial downsizing conspire to make this one dreary holiday. Learn more about our copy's mysterious origins! All this and more in another dynamic entry of MONDO COOL MOVIE DUDES!

Is the Christmas season one tinged with bleakness? Do all the great holiday movies--It's A Wonderful Life or A Christmas Carol, for example--begin at a place of immense sadness? Is that what makes them great? And how does religion factor into our enjoyment of holiday films? Lots of heady topics to unwrap on this week's new Mousterpiece Cinema, where Josh and Mike tackle the 1985 Disney film One Magic Christmas, starring Harry Dean Stanton and Mary Steenburgen. And yes, in between all of this craziness, Mike was able to turn the show into a brand-new Ducksterpiece Theatre. Plus, at the end, a bit of chatter about the new Hobbit film, which Josh reviewed at Sound on Sight. Your early Christmas present is here--you just have to listen to it!
