This mindset helps physicians release the need to control others' opinions, freeing energy for building cash-based practices or scaling businesses. He lists five energy drains—being misunderstood, questioned, compared, doubted, or resisted—and urges doctors to let go of people-pleasing. Examples include a client succeeding in a weight loss clinic despite doubters. Dr. Woo-Ming suggests practicing this mindset daily and joining his free Doctor's Online Success community. Three Actionable Takeaways: Use the "Let Them" Mantra: Daily, recite “Let them think it. Let them say it. Let them go.” Write down one criticism to release (e.g., a peer's doubt about your practice) Target Your Ideal Audience: Focus on patients or clients who value your mission, letting go of those who question or compare your services. Build a Supportive Network: Let resistant team members adapt or leave. Join the free Doctor's Online Success community (skool.com) to connect with like-minded physicians. Your career deserves protection—act now at https://www.doctorpodcastnetwork.co/setforlife. ______ As physicians, our ability to earn is our greatest asset—yet a single injury or illness can derail everything. In this episode, Dr. Mike Woo-Ming sits down with Jamie Fleischner, president and founder of Set for Life Insurance, a company that has guided over 30,000 physicians since 1993. Jamie shares her expertise on disability insurance, focusing on the unique benefits of Guaranteed Standard Issue (GSI) policies that skip medical underwriting and ensure coverage regardless of preexisting conditions. From the importance of "own occupation" definitions to the pitfalls of relying solely on employer-provided plans, Jamie offers practical advice for physicians at all stages—whether you're a resident, a mid-career doctor, or transitioning to a new path like private practice or entrepreneurship. She also highlights common misconceptions, red flags to watch for when shopping for policies, and why timing is everything when securing coverage. Tune in to learn how to protect your income, navigate career shifts, and ensure your financial future, no matter what life throws your way. Three Actionable Takeaways: Secure Coverage Early – Disability insurance gets more expensive and harder to obtain as you age or develop health issues. Act during training or while you have verifiable W2 income for the best rates and options. Prioritize "Own Occupation" Policies – Ensure your policy covers your specific specialty, so you're protected even if you pivot to another role or career without losing benefits. Reevaluate Regularly – Life changes like career transitions, income shifts, or paying off debt are key moments to adjust your coverage—don't set it and forget it. About Guest: Jamie Fleischner is the founder and president of Set for Life Insurance, a company dedicated to helping physicians secure disability and life insurance since 1993. With over 30 years of experience, she has worked with more than 30,000 doctors across the country, offering tailored solutions like Guaranteed Standard Issue (GSI) disability insurance. Show SummaryOn today's episode, we're featuring a conversation with Navy Veteran and military spouse Melissa Washington. Melissa is the CEO of the Women Veterans Alliance, Women Veterans Giving, and publisher of Women Veterans Magazine. Provide FeedbackAs a dedicated member of the audience, we would like to hear from you about the show. Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts about the show in this short feedback survey. By doing so, you will be entered to receive a signed copy of one of our host's three books on military and veteran mental health. About Today's GuestMelissa Washington, Navy Veteran, Founder & CEO: Award-winning advocate, speaker, author, entrepreneur, CEO, publisher, Radio Show Host, and proud Navy veteran Melissa A. Washington wears many hats. Yet woven throughout her diverse pursuits is a mission of service—and a passion to empower her fellow women veterans. The daughter of a Bronze Star Army Vietnam War veteran, Melissa grew up in San Francisco's East Bay. Fiercely independent as a child, she spent many afternoons in her family's video store, developing an early sense of business acumen. That enterprising spirit continued into her teenage years when Melissa began training for a career in early childhood education while still in high school. But something else sparked in Melissa just as she was finishing her certification. Seeking to expand her world and serve her country, the 18-year-old enlisted in the Navy, spending three years on active duty and five years in the reserve. She did a 6-month "Med Cruise" and a 6-month "West Pac" deployment during her active duty. That formative experience set her life on a completely new trajectory—not only taking her across the globe and teaching her vital lessons but also introducing Melissa to her husband and, ultimately, inspiring her to transform thousands of lives. In the mid-nineties, she chose to leave the Navy early, having witnessed the burdens that come with a dual-service family. While her husband would remain in the Marine Corps for 21 years, Melissa embarked on a new path, earning her bachelor's degree in business management. She followed with a decade-long career in corporate recruiting and human resources, working with such entities as Nissan, Oracle, Tickets.com, Randstad, and the 2002 Winter Olympics. But in 2009, amid The Great Recession, Melissa was laid off. Despite the setback, she relied on her military training—which taught her to be adaptable and resourceful—and her innate sense of resilience. Above all, Melissa saw an opportunity to reinvent herself once again.Initially, she held LinkedIn workshops from her dining room table, imparting her vital knowledge to others. Soon, she was hosting larger workshops, which eventually grew into speaking engagements with hundreds of attendees. In 2011, she established Melissa Washington, Inc., a consulting service catering to businesses and individuals that incorporates LinkedIn for research, recruiting, job seeking, and collaboration. After four years at LinkedIn, where Melissa managed global meetings, she returned to her entrepreneurial roots. But this time, she focused on her fellow women veterans. A natural networker, Melissa initially sought to connect with her peers outside of traditional veterans' organizations. Yet, the more meetups she planned, the more she realized the need for a dedicated support system for women veterans. In 2015, what started as a local meetup turned into Women Veterans Alliance—a global organization that seeks to empower and positively impact the lives of women veterans. Three years later, she established the nonprofit wing of WVA, Women Veterans Giving. Both entities offer women veterans opportunities to gain valuable career experience and successfully integrate back into civilian life. WVG also helps fund women veteran-owned businesses, which other organizations often overlook. To date, they have awarded over $20k to women in veteran-owned businesses. In 2016, created and produced the first "Women Veterans Unconference." Developed The Beyond Call of Duty Award Honoring Sgt Nicole Gee to honor and recognize the women in our communities. In 2021, Melissa expanded her role in the community by co-founding Women Veterans Magazine—the first publication of its kind to address the issues affecting women veterans and provide them with local and national resources. Aside from serving as CEO of WVA and WVG and publisher of Women Veterans Magazine, Melissa stays busy as an in-demand public speaker whose topics range from Maximizing Impact to Unlocking the Power of Purpose. She speaks regularly at conferences and events around the country and has spoken at over 100 events—presenting for the likes of Marriott, the Urban League, Blue Diamond, and IMEX America. Melissa has also appeared on the Dr. Phil Show and the Lifetime Channel's The Balancing Act, as well as on SiriusXM, iHeartRadio, ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox, among others.Additionally, Melissa is the author of Get Back to Work: Smart & Savvy Real-World Strategies to Make Your Next Career Move (FriesenPress, 2014). And Unstoppable: Being Fierce, Fearless & Unf*ckwithable in Life and Business, based on her experiences with WVA, which offers practical advice on creating a meet-up group and becoming an influencer within one's community (Brave Healer Productions, 2022).A longtime resident of Northern California, Melissa was a 2011 recipient of the Sacramento Business Journal's prestigious 40 Under 40 award and was among the Journal's Women Who Mean Business honorees in 2017. She has also been recognized by the National Association of Women Business Owners with an Outstanding Women Leader Visionary Award and received the 2016 Soroptimist Ruby Award, which recognizes women helping women. In 2019, she received the Center for Women Veterans' Trailblazer Award. In 2022, she received her first Federal Appointment to the Small Business Administration Advisory Committee on Veteran Business Affairs (ACVBA). In 2022, Thrive Causemetics Inc. featured a "Melissa" Warm Sienna Sheer Strength Hydrating Lip Tint to honor her infinite impact on the community. In 2023, she started Veteran.Events to provide event services to the veteran and military community. Outside of work, Melissa enjoys spending quality time with her husband, Jarrod, and daughter, Maya. In addition to being an avid genealogist, Melissa loves vacationing with her family—particularly trips that involve a beach. Her grandfather, a WWII Army Air Corps/Air Force Veteran who received the Bronze Star and Air Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters, served in the 509th Bomb Squad AC in the Eastern European Theater with 37 missions over Germany. Her husband is a retired Marine who served in combat in Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF).Links Mentioned in this Episode Women Veterans Alliance Web SitePsychArmor Resource of the WeekFor this week's PsychArmor resource of the week is the PsychArmor course, Women Veterans Series. Additionally, Dr. Byrne is an established author, writing two important books, Work Smart, a guide on leveraging brain and behavioral science to enhance productivity, and Moral Injury: Healing the Healers, which is shedding light on the pressing clinician crisis that's surrounding the American healthcare system. As a board-certified psychiatrist with an MD and a PhD in neuroscience, Dr. Byrne offers a unique perspective on the biological and psychological aspects of human behavior and health. Throughout the episode, John and Dr. Byrne dive into the pervasive erosion of trust within the healthcare system among patients, practitioners, and administrators. Dr. Byrne highlights the concept of moral injury, a deeper issue that goes beyond burnout, where healthcare providers feel unable to give proper care due to systemic barriers. Today's discussion underscores the misalignment between clinicians and administration, outdated technology, and staff shortages, effectively exacerbating trust issues. Dr. Byrne advocates for technology companies to shadow healthcare providers to gain genuine insights into their challenges, promoting a culture of empathy, creative collaboration, and informed technological solutions. She also emphasizes the use of common language to bridge the gap between tech developers and clinicians, suggesting that tech companies build trust through ongoing education, peer-led learning, and active listening. On this flashback episode from 6/12/21, we're going past #Hustle and #Grind, getting into two specific concepts for entrepreneurs, business owners, side hustlers, career builders or anyone pursuing a passion should be utilizing. Ignore the old saying "Work Smart, Not Hard" but instead replace it with "Work Smart, then Work Hard." Do both together in that order. Work Smart: Have a plan, put a strategy into place and understand your strengths and weaknesses, market condition, your competition, your audience, your value proposition and your selling position. Focus, measure and adjust for what's working (do more of that) and what's not working (do less of that) for repeatable success. Work Hard: Now that you're informed, organized and focused, put in the work. Otherwise, working hard is just being busy, not actually creating success. Use your smart plan to get the most accomplished in the most complete ways at the highest levels of quality and consistency. Don't cut corners; do the work at every level to ensure an effective outcome. Don't try to work less; work more effectively. Why? Because nothing great ever happened without hard work. This episode of the podcast explains in deep detail how these concepts work, support each other and lead to sustainable, repeatable success. Let's talk about it! It's Saturday. I'm in the office. My guest today encountered a personal (and all-too-common) dilemma after she had her son eight years ago. As someone who worked full-time in corporate or tech jobs for most of her career, Jill Jacobs was anxious to get back to work after giving birth. Not only did she love working, but as she says today, she needed to get back to work to support her home, lifestyle, and new baby's needs. Quickly, she realized how daunting and unsustainable this was. Here she was working full time, paying somebody else to be home with her child and, when she did get home from work, she was clearly not bringing her best self. Ahhh…the American dream, right? Here's the deal, though. Educated women with children are leaving the work forces in droves. What Jill wanted was to work smarter, spend smarter, and love what she was doing. So, since she wasn't finding it in the workforce, she started it herself. Enter the Better Balance vision. At Better Balance, Jill and her team connect professionals who want to work less than 40 hours a week with the Employers looking to hire them. They help people find fulfilling part-time professional work, leveraging their education, experience, talents and skills while maintaining a balance that fits their priorities in life. Jill offers valuable and real insights about starting a business from the ground up, taking risks, and the value of finding mentors and supporters in your endeavor. And, as difficult it is, she also stresses the importance of taking small steps and imperfect action. I love this “I Could Never Do That” theme of taking a problem and creating a solution. Not just so you can flourish, but to help others do the same. The David Alliance TDAGiantslayer@gmail.com How to be a man on Tuesday nights 7pm HillSpring Church Meat with Meat. Burgers and Bible. Picking up my lunch at the drive through… that'll be 14.37. I looked at the kid handed him a $20 and said 5.63… a few seconds go by and the kid goes hey thats the exact change… wow pretty good. I smiled and said ‘yea I took a pretty advanced math class in college”. He nodded and said ‘yeah, you can tell”. Your competition is not out there… your only competition is you. This generation is so divided down the line… half hate America, life is unfair, lazy, want everything handed to them… The other half is wanting to make a name for themselves, but might lack direction or have a plan. Proverbs 14:23 : "All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty." You will be a success simply by working hard in a world of co-horts who are too busy playing the blame game. While everyone is taking about how hard it is, how others have a unfair advantage… look, I'm old and white so everyone thinks I have it easy… I have written 14 books… they all were hard work. I have started 89 different businesses… they all took sacrifice and were hard work. John 15 - whoever abides in me… what is this saying to the young man who wants to succeed? Get rid of distractions. Focus on your job… but on how God wants to use you outside your job. What do I mean…. If you work hard 8 hours a day but kill 6 hours a day watching tv, video games, drinking, playing softball… etc… you are distracted from being all you can be. Cut out the distractions and if you are a welder, than work outside your job to be the smartest well rounded, biblically minded, fit welder there is. Colossians 3:23-24 : "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. What ever you do… Hey what job should I do? Anything you can. Get a job in the trades… chances are you will get trained on site, you will have no college debt, you will immediately have men who will mentor you and you will most likely make between 30-60 dollars… AND most trade jobs you can do side work. My son is a tile guy. He loves it. He works by himself, he puts on his iPod, he needs minimal tools and feels a sense of self fulfillment every day seeing most of his jobs finished within 8 -12 hours. He has already connected with a few other men to do side jobs. Whatever you do…. Make it your best and you will get noticed and move forward. Matthew 24 The talents… 28 So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. 29 For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. If you work hard, and if you are someone who uses his job not just for money but to make God look good… you work to glorify him… you tithe, you share Christ at work, you give to those in need… God will take your talents and give you more. Look this year I have been asked to fill 2 positions with other companies… one in firearms and protection and the other with a company that works hand in hand with fortune 500 companies…. How did I get these offers? Honestly, I served both of the CEO for years… I truly trained them in speaking, I coached them in life skills, and I was there to help make them better as men… I poured into them, solely for the reason to make them more like Jesus… and in turn they both offered me incredible positions for work on the side…. Finally… have more than two streams of income. Right now I have income coming in from 6 different books. I have incommode coming in from coaching people in life skills, I have income coming in for training people in my gym, I have income coming in from speaking around the country… and I have my Job… Again how do I get so much done? I only do things I am gifted at and I don't like to waste time and I built my schedule around systems. YOU CAN DO THE SAME!
