"Our industry is full of people with big hearts — but running a shelter takes more than heart. It takes structure, strategy, and systems." This episode is sponsored-in-part by Maddie's Fund. Whether you're running a grassroots cat rescue or leading a multi-million-dollar shelter, the question remains the same: how do we keep the doors open and services running? Fundraising expert and shelter operations consultant Tim Crum joins the podcast to tackle this question head-on. With over $400 million raised and 300+ organizations advised, Tim brings an unmatched depth of insight into what makes animal welfare groups thrive — and where they falter. From his early days in architecture to his unexpected pivot into the shelter world, Tim's journey reveals how diverse professional skills can translate into nonprofit success. In this thought-provoking conversation, Tim dives into why fundraising shouldn't be feared, how shelters can better manage staff burnout and retention, and why it's time for a paradigm shift in how we house and help cats. He also highlights how intake diversion, working cat programs, and strategic communication can transform how we serve both animals and people. If your organization struggles with funding, staffing, or long-term planning — this is the episode you can't miss. Press Play Now For: The difference between writing grants and building donor relationships How to attract and retain shelter staff despite low wages The real impact of the veterinary shortage on community cats Why loud music in cat housing might be doing more harm than good What working cat programs and intake diversion really look like in action A fresh take on how to build community support instead of barriers Why it's never too late to bring your professional skills into animal welfare Resources & Links: Animal Shelter Fundraising (http://animalshelterfundraising.com) Animal Shelter Services (http://animalshelterservices.com) Children's Books by Tim Crum (http://timcrum.com) Sponsor Links: Maddie's Fund (https://www.communitycatspodcast.com/maddies611) Follow & Review We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet. And just like that, Thanksgiving was here. Thanksgiving is a strange one for me. So much of Thanksgiving was spent by me, normally at my Mom and Dad's, cooking and watching football. We were such a small family, but I really do cherish that time that I got and those small and intimate moments with my parents. I realize only now how truly lucky I was to have great people who loved me and never did anything BUT support me. As a parent myself, I now see some real jerks who never had any business having a child. My folks were the best, and I'm just trying to bring a bit of that to my friends and family during Thanksgiving. Sorry, I got mushy there for a bit. But truthfully, I care about you guys, and I wish you and your friends and family the BEST Thanksgiving ever! Warning: you may be persuaded to adopt a furry friend at the end of this episode. Welcome Jim Keller, the owner of Homeward Pet: a no kill shelter located outside Seattle that focuses on pet adoption, behavioral therapy, fostering and charity. This organization is run by Jim and his wife. Both of whom left their long term careers, took massive pay cuts, to devote their lives to helping animals in need. In 1990, Homeward Pet was founded on the belief that every adoptable animal would eventually find a safe, caring home. "Euthanasia was – and continues to be – used only as a last resort to ease suffering from injury or illness. With this commitment to providing homeless animals without the pressure of a euthanasia deadline, we started small: just 350 cats and 20 dogs adopted this first year, many from foster homes." They have grown to adopt out nearly 2000 animals each year to their community, reduce animal surrender and have over 400 volunteers. We call these individuals Upstanders. People who devote their lives to upping the expectations in our society and how they participate in the world. Check out their website at homewardpet.org for information on their services. Enjoy! In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Gerard Elliot, Founder and Host of Pet Rescue Radio. Following an extensive career in broadcasting, Gerard integrated his passion with his desire to help animals in need. He explains how a tragedy involving his pet's demise inspired him to start the radio. Gerard's primary goal for Pet Rescue Radio is to help raise awareness for pet owners about the effective and beneficial ways to take good care of their pets. The radio operates 24/7 and streams music of all genres - from pop to hip hop to the classics. But what makes this radio station unique is its animal-centered informational program that plays every 30 minutes. Gerard also hosts the Pet Cafe Program on the radio where he announces the list of adoptable animals from rescues and shelters across the United States. These animals are currently in need of families and lasting homes. “Our mission is very clear. Kristen Peralta is the co-founder of the amazing senior pet rescue, Vintage Pet Rescue. Vintage Pet Rescue (and you have to love the name) is a Rhode Island based 501c3 non-profit run by Kristen and her husband, Marc Peralta who ironically met at a Los Angeles animal shelter in 2013. After moving from LA to Rhode Island (Kristen's home state), over the last 4 years, Vintage Pet Rescue has taken in hundreds of senior, hospice, and special needs dogs. These dogs receive top-notch medical treatment, attention, and love before finding their forever home. People Magazine even featured their work in a hilarious story which we talk about in the show.
