Saxophonist/composer JD Allen is known for his enigmatic, elegant and hard-driving style, as well as for his passionate storytelling through music. On his recently-released new album, Americana, Vol. 2, he continues to explore the underestimated but crucial role the blues has played in the history of jazz and how in continues to evolve and influence the art form today. He continues this investigation alongside his long-time colleagues Gregg August and Rudy Royston. This time around, he is also joined by guitarist Charlie Hunter, who shares not only Allen's interest in the blues and its legacy but they also share similar life experiences. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jazziz/support

Gregg and I have a wonderful discussion about working in New York as a professional musician and band leader. Greg plays music in both Classical and Jazz genres and is in high demand as a bassist. He also fronts his own jazz orchestra and has done Grammy nominated composing, arranging and recording production.
On this episode of Backsliders, we talk with our dear friend, the talented and light-filled artist Forest VanDyke! Forest is an actor, singer, writer, creator, and teaching artist currently in Austin, Texas, though he has lived in Brooklyn for the past twelve years. We are so stoked to celebrate that Forest is a featured artist on the new Grammy-Nominated album Dialogues on Race by Gregg August! We love him so much, and his friendship means the world to us. We hope you enjoy this conversation with our dear friend as much as we did! It was hard to end the conversation and we plan on recording with him again soon. (** NOTES ** *TW:*** We do touch on the topics of abortion and rape in this episode. Please skip if these subjects are triggering for you. PS. Listen to the whole thing to get a bonus at the very end of this episode where we review a new review of our podcast and Micah tries to take constructive criticism. LOL) Back to this episode! Forest talks with us about his upbringing in Austin, his junior high experience in the American Boys Choir in New Jersey, his high school years at a Baptist school in Austin, and his college years at Texas State University. We also get into the details of his religious upbringing and his perspective growing up as a gay black man in the south. He was raised African-American Baptist and spent his whole life going to a Baptist church in Austin, Texas. Forest is the son of a deacon and deaconess, sang in the choir, and became a student leader. People at church even used to call him “preacha man” because everyone thought he would be a preacher. Forest tells us about what it was like feeling like he couldn’t truly be himself until he went to college and stepped away from religious environments and into theatre spaces. Where is he today? Not to spoil anything, but Forest confessed to us that he no longer identifies as Christian, and walked away, in his words, “because of what I saw and experienced as a gay man, but also as a black man. And the history of that book (bible), and how it was used, not only in the U.S. but in Africa. And the power that colonizers used with that book to oppress people. And...in good faith, I just can’t get behind it, I can’t sit there and listen to those things when I know the history behind it. And we don’t know what those original words were because they’ve been translated, and re-translated. Actually, I walked away from everything, before quarantine... but I’ve been reacquainted with God in a different way, and I’m exploring Him / It / She through African Traditional Religions. Because I also want to be in contact with my ancestors, and I feel like something that’s untouched, unspoiled, feels right for me.” Forest’s story is so powerful. We talk candidly with him about leaving Christianity, and getting back to his African spiritual roots. Other topics we discuss: George Floyd, the ways LGBTQ people are treated by Christians, and the experience of living with family that are fundamental Christians, while you are exploring ancient religions and talking to your spirit guides. :) [CONNECT WITH FOREST] Instagram Twitter Facebook Listen to TRACK SEVEN to hear his voice featured on the album Dialogues on Race. Bassist Gregg August spans the classical, avant-garde, jazz and Latin jazz worlds making him one of the most versatile musicians on the scene today. As a jazz bassist Gregg is a member of the JD Allen Trio, having recorded 9 albums with the group, as well as Arturo O'farrill's Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, with whom he's won 5 Grammy awards. His newest album , Dialogues On Race, released on his own record label Iacuessa Records, recently received a Grammy nomination for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. His hope is that Dialogues on Race can in some small way serve as an integrated musical bridge to awareness, and maybe even stand as an affirmation against racism and injustice.

Beautiful day in NYC today. In this edition:A quick jam with my friend @digifiddler, who was my guest on Episode 7.Nostalgia for the future. Some amazing new music from another podcast guest.[Today’s guest violinist in action. Press play above!]It is a luxury to listen to music. But making music is a healthy pursuit. Not luxurious. From the making and the playing, many benefits flow as long as we don't get caught up in the luxury side of things. We leave that to the listener because it takes work to create luxury listening experiences. And work is good for the soul. But it is still work.We play, but it is work. And the work has to be FOR somebody. Maybe you have an audience. Maybe God is your audience. Maybe you play to retrieve a lost part of yourself. But one of the big lines that gets blurred when music is "free" and our technology enables all kinds of sharing is this one: the line between frivolity and service. It's not a supply and demand thing. Music isn't a game. We serve the sound and the sound serves humanity a thousand fold. Take it seriously. It's real. And some very real music is about to follow below!...A Wreath for Emmet TillSome of you may remember hearing from Gregg August in episode 15 of my podcast, in which he gave us some rich rememberings of his time in Cuba and growing up between the worlds of jazz, classical and afro-cuban music. He has some new music, the album isn’t out yet but a few videos are. This is a deep and intricate piece of work, Gregg has put together a beautiful ensemble and given us quite a gift here. Click here for the more-uptempo other video with the same group. And here’s a great one with both Greg and Todd in a trio. It’s some high quality music. For more on Gregg, explore his site.Thank you for reading and subscribing!I appreciate you.
