We also highlight the results are in from our summer survey of top ministry executives. They tell us their biggest challenges—and hopes for the future. But first, a former youth volunteer for Vineyard Church in Anaheim, California, has been sentenced to more than 120 years in prison. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh.  We get database and other technical support from Stephen DuBarry, Rod Pitzer, and Casey Sudduth. Writers who contributed to today's program include Jessica Eturralde, Daniel Ritchie, Kim Roberts, Tiffany Stanley, Yonat Shimron, Anna Piela, and Brittany Smith. A special thanks to the National Association of Evangelicals for contributing material for this week's podcast. Until next time, may God bless you.   FIRST SEGMENT Warren: Hello everybody. I'm Warren Smith, coming to you from Charlotte, North Carolina. Natasha: And I'm Natasha Cowden, coming to you from Denver, Colorado. And we'd like to welcome you to the MinistryWatch podcast. Warren: On today's program, after a slew of controversies, Southern Baptists chose a low-key leader. We take a closer look at new S-B-C President Clint Pressley. And, Pastors and politics—legally, what are churches and other Christian nonprofits allowed to do when it comes to this year's presidential campaign? Natasha But first, a former youth volunteer for Vineyard Church in Anaheim, California, has been sentenced to more than 120 years in prison. Warren: Todd Christian Hartman, 41, has been sentenced to 125 years to life for collecting and creating child pornography materials and molesting four girls between the years 2009 and 2014. In 2015, investigators found hundreds of child pornography images and videos in Hartman's Newport Beach home. Federal agents arrested Hartman on child pornography charges, but the case collapsed after a judge ruled he was not informed of his Miranda rights at the time of his arrest. Natasha: What happened next? Warren: In 2016, Hartman contacted the father of two of his victims and admitted to repeatedly molesting one of them after meeting through his volunteer work at the Anaheim Vineyard Church children's ministry, starting when the girl was 6 years old. Hartman was also convicted of molesting the girl's younger sister and molesting a 14-year-old girl and 12-year-old girl at a sleepover in 2009. Natasha: How did the church respond? Warren: MinistryWatch contacted the Dwelling Place to inquire about Vineyard's handling of the employee's concerns, including whether or not church leadership was informed. We have not yet heard back at the time of publication. Natasha: Let's move to our next story Warren: A Colorado man has been sentenced to at least eight years in prison for sexually abusing a child, with the possibility of life behind bars. Michael Paustian, age 53, pleaded guilty to sexual assault of a child from a position of trust for a victim under the age of 15. He also pleaded guilty to sexual exploitation of a child. Both are class 3 felonies. Natasha: Was he connected to a ministry? Warren: Paustian was employed by Group Publishing as the company's creative director. Group Publishing is widely known for publishing curriculum used by churches. He'd began working at Group Publishing in 2005, and informed “company leaders in 2023 that he was being accused of incidents that allegedly happened in his home 18 years ago, not related to his work at Group.”

Year after year, thousands of churches across America are closing. Churches that were once the heart and soul of their communities are now shrinking both in size and influence, leading author and filmmaker Thom Schultz to try to figure out why. The creator of the film, When God Left the Building, Thom joins the pod to talk about the spiritual malaise, refusal to change, and an irrelevance to modern life that doom so many churches.  Thom also shares some signs of life and hope for fresh expressions of church and ministry.  Thom Schultz is an author, filmmaker, publisher and innovator in resources for churches. He is the director of the documentary feature film “When God Left the Building.” He's the co-author, along with his wife Joani, of many books, including Why Nobody Wants to Go to Church Anymore, The One Thing, and Don't Just Teach . . . Reach. And his blog is called Holy Soup. Thom founded the international multimedia company Group Publishing in 1974, and continues to serve as its president. Group publishes books, Bibles and educational resources for churches and Christians around the world. The Future Christian Podcast is a production of Torn Curtain Arts and Resonate Media.

According to a recent article in Reuters, life expectancy fell once again in 2021, but of note is the fact that suicide related deaths were the third leading contributor to the decline in life expectancy for men. The CDC states that there is a death by suicide every 11 minutes. These facts are jaw dropping, but there is a solution and a way to improve your brain health. Dr. Daniel Emina, a psychiatrist and associate medical director of Amen Clinics, and Rick Lawrence, the general editor of the #1 bestselling Jesus-Centered Bible and host of the podcast Paying Ridiculous Attention to Jesus, have collaborated to end the epidemic in their book The Suicide Solution: Finding Your Way Out of the Darkness. Throughout The Suicide Solution, the authors use computer hardware and software as metaphors for the body's biology and psychology to show how suicide is generally the culmination of a malfunction or failure of these two systems. Dr. Emina and Lawrence also include a vast array of simple, daily habits that enhance brain health—from walking barefoot outside to naming our negative self-stories. About Rick LawrenceLike everyone else, I usually introduce myself by listing what I do, rather than describing what's most important to me. So I'll take the road less traveled and answer this question first: “What do you stand for?”I stand for the mission of Jesus in the world, not because it's the Christian thing to do, but because I'm captured and conquered by His heart...The truth that overshadows everything in my life is simple: I am ruined by Jesus and ruined for Jesus. I mean, my love for Jesus, and my pursuit of Him, infiltrates every aspect of my identity. He is my raw necessity—most days, I'm desperate for Him in the same way a man crawling through the desert is desperate for water.Under that overshadowing truth, I'm a husband to Bev, a spitfire Irish/Italian wife, and father to two delightful girls, Lucy and Emma. Every living thing in our home was female until a certain brutish male cat joined our all-girl pet lineup.I'm Executive Director of Vibrant Faith—we come alongside ministry leaders to resource, train, coach, and conduct large-scale research projects. We have a rich history in the church, living out the vision of our founder, Dr. Merton Strommen. I invite you to “taste and see” what we're doing at VibrantFaith.org. I'm an author of 40 books and curriculums, and a speaker, ministry leader, and trainer. For three decades I led the youth ministry resourcing and training mission of Group Publishing, and was Executive Editor of GROUP Magazine. While there, I helped launch a line of books and resources for adults called “Jesus-Centered.”I'm also the creator and host of a podcast called Paying Ridiculous Attention to Jesus, now in its sixth season.http://ricklawrence.com

Pastor Randy Jumper serves as the young adult pastor at First Assembly in North Little Rock, Arkansas! NXT YA/UNITE is a place where young adults inNorth Little Rock come together for a weekly service and grow in Christ together. He has over 20 years of experience in young adult ministry.  Here's an article Pastor Randy wrote to help those who are new to young adult ministry or might be starting something new:  I'm excited that you are going to be helping reach young adults!  You'll find it to be an exciting time of ministry and fun!  I know I love it.   A couple resources to start with.  Check out these websites:   Youngadults.ag.org  go down to the resources pages.  There are several articles we've written to help start and grow a young adult ministry   Facebook - become a young adult facebook member.  Find the links on the youngadults website. On the Resources page, under leadership, click Building the Ministry.  It's a great resource for information!   Books you might want to consider reading:   College Ministry from Scratch by Chuck Bomar and College ministry 101 by the same author.   Practical Young adult Ministry from Group Publishing.   Lost and Found by Ed Stetzer   Sustainable Young Adult Ministry by Mark DeVries and Scott Pontier   Where do you start?  Most people will tell you relationships, discussion based teaching, and other basic info.  All that is true and important parts, but if you are like me, you want something to "do."     I know I need to be open to young adults, pray for the Holy Spirit to work in young adults, build meaningful relationships with young adults, etc...but what do I "do" to do that?  If I were you, I start with two simple steps:   Step One:  Make 5 lists.   Yep, get a piece of paper and a pen out and make some lists (OK, turn your laptop since nobody uses pens and paper anymore).  I regularly make some lists when starting a new area of ministry with young adults.  They are simple:   List 1:  Who are our young adults? Write down the names of all the young adults currently in your church and/or influence.  Your pastor may need to help you.  The size of your church will impact this list.  If you have a database system your church uses to record attendance, get help from it.  Because of our church size, we narrow it to young adults 17 - 30 and who have attended at least 2 times in the last year.  We annually go through this list.  But it started with a piece of paper and a pen writing down the names of real people we want to minister to and with.   List 2:  What is our church doing with young adults now? Don't write "nothing"!  You might be surprised. Start asking questions about what is going on in your church. Look at List 1 and see where YA's are now! I promise you they are there and already active in some place. Are young adults from list one Sunday school teachers for kids? Youth sponsors?  In the choir? Is there a small group for them?  Maybe a class? Do the YA's go out to eat every Sunday after church - do they sit together in the sanctuary? Are they on the Sunday worship team?  My guess is that at least 1 young adult is doing something, somewhere at your church.  This will help you better leverage them and others for future involvement and understand who is involved and who is a leader.  You might have an organic group of YA's already together, you just need to connect with them and mobilize them.   List 3:  What do you and your pastor want to see developed? What is your assignment?  Is it growing the church?  Evangelizing young adults in the community? Keeping your current young adults?  Providing fun activities only?  Discipleship only? Starting a Sunday school class? Starting a special service? If the answer to all those questions is a yes!  Then then narrow it down for what you want to accomplish in the first 3 months, first 6 months and then the first year.  Set an agenda for what you both are wanting to do for the kingdom.  When you know your assignment, you'll know the direction to take to fulfill that assignment.  Make sure you and the church leaders are on the same page.  There is nothing worse than achieving your goal - only to find out it was the wrong goal.   List 4:  Who is on your team? You'll need several people, especially some young adults from list 1, to join you in launching this ministry.  Young adults need ministered WITH, not necessarily ministered TO.  Get buy in and recruit some young adults and other people to help you do this and do this well.  I'd say get as many as possible on this team.  If possible I like the number 5 (notice the 5 lists!).  Five people is a good size team to manage and lead.  What if we only have 5 young adults to start with....no problem, use the 5 of them as leaders to start your group.   List 5: What is going to happen for the next 6 months   Take all this and build a game plan.  The President of the United States maps the first 100 days.  Most NFL football teams script the first quarter and even first half of football plays they are going to run. You do the same.  Script what you'll do for the next 6 months at least, and then work your way backwards with planning, recruitment and involvement. Script what is going to happen with young adults every week for the next 6 months. Some weeks you'll have more than others, maybe even no scheduled events or activities, but do something every week to minister to young adults (maybe all you do that week is Facebook every young adult in your church and tell them they matter to you!)   If you want to send me any of this to look through and offer my suggestions - not sure they'll be any good, but I'll try.     BONUS:  Change the Way You Eat   This isn't diet advice, its ministry advice.  Never eat alone if at all possible.  Every Sunday possible have a young adult over to your house for lunch or dinner.  Go out to eat with a young adult.  Go get coffee with them on campus.  I can't think of the last time a week went by and I was not eating with a young adult.

This Sunday was a Family Experience, so we sang, talked, and had fun together from babies to seniors. While we regularly have times for age specific programs, we also think there should be times to follow Jesus together.During this message, we had an object lesson, video, and discussion time which were removed for this podcast. Our main point was that God will help everyone overcome sin when we invite Him.Bible App Notes bit.ly/ForEveryoneWeek5Resources from North Point Community Church, N.T. Our Fourth Legend -- Walt Mueller It was 1989. The internet wasn't invented yet. George HW Bush was president. The Berlin Wall came down. The Cosby Show, Rosanne, and Cheers held the top spots on TV. Madonna, Phil Collins, and the Bangles topped the charts. Morgan Freeman was Driving Miss Daisy. And a little-known youth pastor from Pennsylvania got a crazy idea to start a resource ministry to help youth workers and parents navigate the travails of youth culture.   That was Walt Mueller, and his brainchild was the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding (CPYU). For the past 30 years--through books, podcasts, workshops, speaking engagements and tons and tons of online resources--CPYU has been a key player in the youth ministry world. For many veteran youth workers, Walt and his team at CPYU have been like a soundtrack to a life in youth ministry.    During our talk with Walt, we learned about his call to begin CPYU, the spiritual challenges of being a researcher into an often discouraging and even depressing youth culture, and his heart to bring solid theological and practical help to today's youth workers. We also heard some great stories from Youth Specialties conventions of the past, including a near-sparring episode that ensued one year during a panel discussion on rock music.   Through it all, Walt has remained relevant, faithful, and available to all of us, and for that we are thankful. Walt Mueller is the founder and President of the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding and has been working with young people and families for over 35 years. As a result of his work with CPYU, Walt has become an internationally-recognized speaker and author on contemporary youth culture. He has written extensively on youth culture and family issues and is the author of the following books: 99 Thoughts for Parents of Teenagers (Group Publishing, 2010); The Space Between: A Parent's Guide to Teenage Development (Zondervan, 2009); Opie Doesn't Live Here Anymore: Where Faith, Family, and Culture Collide (Standard Publishing, August 2007); Youth Culture 101 (Zondervan, June 2007); I Want to Talk With my Teen About Movies, Music & More (Standard Publishing, September 2006); Engaging The Soul of Youth Culture: Bridging Teen Worldviews To Christian Truth (InterVarsity Press, February 2006); and the critically acclaimed Gold Medallion Award winner, Understanding Today's Youth Culture (Tyndale House, 1994). He is also a regular contributor to numerous journals and magazines. A graduate of Geneva College (B.A.) and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (M.Div.), Walt earned his doctorate at Gordon-Conwell in “Ministry to Postmodern Generations.” Walt has served in ministry with the Coalition for Christian Outreach and as a youth pastor in churches in Johnstown, PA and Philadelphia. Walt's wife Lisa has served behind the scenes since day one as CPYU's secretary. A graduate of Geneva College who has a background in radio, Lisa's voice can be heard on CPYU's daily Youth Culture Today radio spot. Walt and Lisa live in Elizabethtown and have four children.   Mentioned on today's episode: Center for Parent/Youth Understanding CPYU has too many resources to mention. Check out their podcasts, blogs and nearly limitless articles of interest on youth culture and trends. It will make you look smarter than you are!

Walt and Jason open the podcast discussing youth culture news related to playing in the dirt, new words in the dictionary, teens and food insecurities, and a new app to combat bullying. Then during the interview segment our friend Rick Lawrence, the Executive Editor of Group Magazine joins us. Rick is a strong advocate for creative teaching methods. As the times change and youth culture morphs into new shapes and forms, parents and youth workers must consider how to best engage kids in conversations and learning opportunities about the Christian faith. While the message remains unchanged, our methods must be flexible. Join us as we pick Rick's brain and talk about today's youth culture.
