In today's episode, Ruth and guests Rev. Dr. Prince Rivers and Rev. Dr. David Hughes navigate the depths of the future of Christian spirituality through the lenses of the atonement. The discussion confronts traditional interpretations of the cross and atonement, addressing challenges posed by modern perspectives. Ruth, Prince, and David explore theories from historical and contemporary theologians, such as penal substitution, while highlighting how these interpretations impact real-life contexts, especially among marginalized communities and the oppressed. The conversation concludes with reflections on faith, suffering, and power, emphasizing transformation through love over wrath, with a heartfelt prayer for divine guidance and liberation.   This season we are exploring the future of Christian spirituality. Based on her own experience and the lives of people she accompanies on the journey, Ruth has been naming what she is noticing and observing regarding the future of Christian spirituality– how the Spirit is moving and how we can align ourselves to participate in the future God is leading us into. Elements she is naming include respect for the role of desire; emphasis on spiritual direction; welcoming and inclusive; committed to justice; and more. This season Ruth will sit down with thoughtful Christian leaders to discuss their thoughts on one of these elements, as it has to do with the future of Christian spirituality. This season was inspired by the Beyond Words series by the same name. Check out those posts here.   PRINCE RIVERS is senior pastor of Union Baptist Church in Durham, N.C. He has been a participant in the Pastor-Theologian Program at the Center of Theological Inquiry in Princeton, N.J., and has a B.A. in psychology from Morehouse College and an M.Div. from Duke Divinity School and currently serves as consulting faculty at Duke Divinity School.   DAVID HUGHES served as a pastor for 37+ years. In 2013, after attending and serving in several Transforming Community experiences, he became the Executive Director of the Transforming Center, where he served for a number of years. Currently, he serves as the part-time Ambassador of the TC. He is married to Joani, and they have three adult children, and two grandchildren. His passion is to accompany church leaders and congregations in their journey to be spiritually formed and transformed in this most challenging era of the Christian church.   Mentioned in this episode: The Cross and the Lynching Tree by James Cone Invitation to a Journey by Robert Muholland The Deeper Journey by Robert Muholland Music Credit: Kingdom Come by Aaron Niequist Yesterday Today Forever from Music in Solitude   Join us for our upcoming Online Oasis: When the Road is Dark and Dim:  Navigating the Dark Night, Depression, and Grief on the Spiritual Journey. Whether you are wondering about this for yourself,  for someone you love, or  someone you are accompanying as a pastor, psychologist or spiritual director, this conversation will equip you to more wisely discern what is really going on, help you learn how to welcome God's presence into this aspect of the journey, and identify the appropriate resources for each.    It is ideal for:  pastors, spiritual directors, psychologists, individuals, spiritual friends. This summer, we are featuring stories from diverse perspectives in order to stir curiosity and compassion for others. While we don't necessarily endorse every stated view, we stand by each guest as a fellow image-bearer and a human of inherent value. We invite you to listen with an open mind and open heart as you hear the pain, struggle, and triumph of other children of God. Joani and her husband pastored at a West County Church in St. Louis for 18 years. During this time they also led short term mission trips around the world with teams from their church. In 2004 the Lord opened their eyes to what was happening in the city of St. Louis Refugees from the wars going on in the Middle East and Africa were pouring into our city only 20 minutes from their house. After visiting with some of these families their needs were pretty evident. The Lord directed them to leave their positions at the church. By miraculous intervention they bought a building in South City by Bevo Mill in 2006 and started reaching out and loving and helping the new refugees that were coming into the city. Some of the help Oasis provides: furniture, household items, clothing, baby showers for new moms, English and Citizenship classes, monthly community BBQ's, help in finding jobs, utility and rental assistance, good neighbor program. Since January 2024, 820 families have walked into Oasis for some kind of assistance, 183 families from 33 countries received furniture or household items. Aseel Thamer and her family are refugees from Iraq and now proud citizens of the United States. She met Joani through Oasis and now works for them and for Youth in Need, all in St. Louis. Girls Gone Hallmark is a twice-weekly Hallmark review podcast. Today, Megan and Wendy, review the Lacey Chabert sequel "Haul Out the Holly: Lit Up." With its excellent ensemble cast and razor-sharp dialogue, could this sequel sleigh the first movie? Download and listen now! About Haul Out the Holly: Lit Up Director - Maclain Nelson - His 14 directing credits include this year's "A Heidelberg Holiday" and of course the OG "Haul Out the Holly." Writer - Chris Sey  - With only 6 credits, Christopher has only written one previous Hallmark movie, "You're Bacon Me Crazy." He was not the writer on the first "Haul out the Holly." Christopher Sey's incredible efforts during the pandemic. While researching him, I learned that his wife is an ER doc at a hospital in Los Angeles. Along with some friends, he founded a non-profit called DINE ONE ONE that not only provided meals for healthcare workers, but also supported local restaurants.  "Haul out the Holly: Lit Up" was filmed in Utah in September 2023. Lacey Chabert (Emily) - With 175 acting credits it's safe to say Lacey is more than just the queen of Christmas. She also appeared in "A Merry Scottish Christmas" and "The Dancing Detective" this year in addition to reprising her role as Gretchen Werner's in a Walmart Black Friday commercial. Wes Brown (Jared) His 48 acting credits include a ton of Hallmark, but believe it or not we've only reviewed two of his movies here on GGH. Wes dropped his Christmas Jazz album this year titled "My Kind of Christmas." Stephen Tobolowsky (Ned) - Stephen wins the prize for most acting credits of an Actor Appearing on Hallmark, if such a prize exists, with 290 credits. What hasn't he been in? He was a series regular on "The Goldbergs," "One Day at a Time," "Californication," "Silicon Valley" and "Heroes" and we're glad to have him on Hallmark. Related Podcast Episode: Girls Gone Hallmark reviews the original "Haul Out the Holly" from 2022. Melissa Peterman (Pamela) Melissa always lights up the screen in any role among her 36 acting credits. She appeared in "Baby Daddy" on Netflix and of course her role as Barbara Jean on "Reba" is iconic.  Ellen Travolta (Mary Louise) - yes, that Travolta! She has 52 acting credits and appeared in series like "Charles in Charge" and "Joani loves Chachi." In addition to reprising her role as Mary Louise on "Haul Out the Holly," she's reprising a 30 year old role on "General Hospital" as Gloria Cerullo coming up soon. Jennifer Aspen (Jane Johnson). She has 84 acting credits including 44 episodes as Daphne in the series "Party of Five" (with Lacey Chabert). Seth Morris (Joe Johnson). He doesn't have as many acting credits as Stephen Tobolowsky, but with 138 the dude has been in some stuff. Including, "The Big Leap" (a FOX one-season series), HBO's "Veep," Netflix's "Love," "The Good Place," "Parks and Rec," "The League" and so much more.  We got a quick cameo from Eric Mabius who plays Allan, Pamela's husband. Who Was in Haul Out the Holly: Lit Up? Peter Jacobson (Albert) Laura Wardle (Belinda) Kenneth Cummins (Jimmy Johnson) Eliza Hayes Maher (Jessica) Carrie Morgan (Gail) Walter Platz (Bob) Lila Clark (Nicole) Charlotte Kay Witt (Helen)

Joani Geltman has over 30 years of experience working with parents, children, schools, and community groups. She is also a parenting coach, college professor, and public speaker. In this episode, Joani share insights from her book, “A Survival Guide to Parenting Teens”, simple, concrete practical tips useful in those daily moments of stress as a parent when you wish you had the "right thing to do and the right thing to say”!   Key Takeaways Have you ever asked, “What were you thinking?” to your teen?  The teenage brain is still growing, and parents often forget that their teen lacks experience.  Parents are looking at their teens from an adult brain.  Your consequences, you grounding them, is nowhere in their brain when they're being impulsive.  Telling your child not to do something is not a strategy.  Small children respond okay with a voice of authority. In adolescence, this backfires.  All family members are going through major transitions in their life simultaneously.  What can you do if you're having a fight with your teen?  Teens just want you to acknowledge what you're feeling.  How can you talk to your teens about safety?  As a parent, sometimes you can preface by saying, “I wouldn't be your mom/dad if I didn't ask this...” to help your teen understand that you care.    Sponsored by Vermont Student Assistance Corporation “Gear UP”: https://www.vsac.org/     Resources Joanigeltman.com A Survival Guide to Parenting Teens by Joani Geltman Quotes:   “Kids feel before they think. It's a brain that's a volcano waiting to erupt.”    “It's not what you say, it's how you say it. With teens, that's especially important.”    “Your teens might grumble, but you've now planted a seed with it; their safety.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Joani Elliott is very good at cartwheels, imitating Disney Princesses, and making soup. She grew up with six sisters and two brothers and can easily apply make-up using the toaster as a mirror. She has taught middle school English (a little like playing Wac-a-Mole) and writing at Brigham Young University and the University of Maryland. Her husband and she are the parents of two daughters. Joani and her family live in Utah by the mountains, next to a lake and a river. ABOUT THE BOOK - THE AUDACITY OF SARA GRAYSON Sara Grayson is a 32-year-old, part-time greeting card writer about to land the toughest writing assignment of her life. Three weeks after the death of her mother, a world-famous suspense novelist, Sara learns that her mother's dying wish is for her to write the final book in her wildly popular Ellery Dawson series. Sara has lived alone with her dog, Gatsby, ever since her husband walked out with their Pro Double Waffle Maker and her last shred of confidence. She can't fathom writing a book for 30 million fans—not when last week's big win was resetting the microwave clock.  But in a bold move that surprises even her, Sara takes it on. Against an impossible deadline and a publisher intent on sabotaging her every move, Sara discovers that stepping into her mother's shoes means stumbling on family secrets she was never meant to find—secrets that threaten her mother's legacy—and the very book she's trying to create.

Swimming Safari In this episode, Joani Maskell discusses the importance of learning how to swim. Joani started teaching lessons in her own backyard, helping neighborhood children learn to swim. She also taught swimming while in college where she earned her B.A. and M.A. in Elementary Education and Special Education. Post-college she started working as a teacher, then it began all over again when her child needed a lifeguard for her troop. Joani went back and got her lifeguarding certificate and decided to start teaching swim lessons again. Eventually, Joani bought a place to teach lessons out of and hires her own instructors from the University of North Florida. No matter where you live, there is always water around, so it is super important to learn! Seventy-six percent of all drowning deaths in the United States are kids under the age of five. Swimming Safari lessons start at four months of age, and it really is more to educate the parents. Parents are in the water with the children until they are two years old; it is a bonding experience! Water wings in certain situations may be necessary, especially when watching multiple children at one time. Joani recommends teaching children how to do the strokes first, then allowing the kids to play with their inflatables as a treat. Games are a perfect way to have fun in the water while also teaching essential swimming skills. Then, Joani explains how to keep the pool clean. Her pool has a UV system which kills all the pathogens instantly and is tested at least twice daily. Next, Joani gives water safety tips; always be within an arm’s length of your child at the swimming pool. At parties, Joani suggests having a water watcher device. The device has a timer for ten minutes so that person is designated solely to pool safety when the time is up they can pass it to the next adult. Later, Joani advises what to look for in a swim instructor, you do not have to find the most expensive place! Finally, we learn some essential safety features that are necessary to keep children safe when owning a pool. Enjoy the show! It’s hard to believe we haven’t had a pediatrician on the show about parenting yet! This oversight ends today! So honored to have Dr. Joani Lea Jack on the show. She’s a pediatrician who grew up in the conservative Bible Belt culture of the South. She tells me about meeting her a resident who is gay, and how listening to the story of that man changed the course of her faith. She penned a blogpost called Unfolding Miracles that is both heartrending and medically informative (see below link!), that is one of my favorite pieces to share for anyone looking for a compassionate perspective on why we should include LGBTQ people. Dr. Joani didn’t just stop the journey there, she also began to dismantle other social justice issues including racism. Her explanation of why racism exists in the South in this podcast is going to become one of my favorite go-to passages—so spot on. I hope you’ll appreciate her authority and heart as much as I do.     Links: Unfolding Miracles - http://www.joanileajack.com/unfolding-miracles-human-sexuality/ Parenting, A Fender Bender, and Racial Bias - https://www.patheos.com/blogs/unfundamentalistparenting/2017/03/parenting-fenderbender-racialbias/   Join us at the Parenting Forward Patreon Team - https://www.patreon.com/cindywangbrandt

Professor Lynn Comella joins us to talk about her books New Views on Pornography: Sexuality, Politics, and the Law (co-edited with Shira Tarrant, 2015) and Vibrator Nation: How Feminist Sex-Toy Stores Changed the Business of Pleasure (2017). The reach of Vibrator Nation’s readership has extended beyond the typical academic circles and has resonated with a mainstream audience due to its easy reading style, and because it details a history of feminist sex shops that the public was obviously eager to read about. The history of these shops is a fascinating one and one that has literally changed the ways in which we think about the female orgasm within our post-sexual revolution era. The story of these stores isn’t one of capitalist opportunism, it’s actually a story about revolutionary feminist sexual educators who wanted to spread their sexual knowledge to a starving female public looking for ways to expand their sexual pleasure. In short, our understanding of sexual history would be incomplete without the information contained in this book. Pornography also has a role to play in this history. We talk about how pornography worked its way into these sex shops after owners long resisted their inclusion. And we also talk about the movies produced by the legendary San Francisco sex shop Good Vibrations. This is a history that you’re not going to want to miss!  Learn more about Lynn on her website.  Vibrator Nation book review in the New York Times.    Lynn’s interview with The Atlantic.    Sex Out Loud episode where Tristan Taormino interviews Joani Blank.  Vibrator Nation Instagram.  Lynn’s Twitter.  “Ten Feminist Sex Shops You’re Going to Want to Add to Your Wishlist”  pornocultures.podomatic.com facebook.com/AcademicSex @PornoCultures https://concordia.academia.edu/brandrroyo

For seniors with transportation-access issues, finding ways to make essential trips for things like groceries, medical appointments, and prescription refills can be daunting. If they live in Blount County, however, they have help.   Joani Shaver serves as Director of Blount County Office on Aging. Passionate about seniors, Joani has special concern for those who are still ambulatory, but don’t drive. She recognizes the burden transportation issues impose. Smiles: Neighbors Driving Neighbors is a welcome answer.   SMiles is not a form of public transportation. Instead, it is a membership program ($25 annual fee) where seniors are able to purchase a needed service for a reasonable price (a designated number of $6 round-trip rides, ordered in advance).   The program relies on Blount County’s volunteers to provide its service. People are recruited, screened, and trained before being accepted as SMiles drivers. They use their own vehicles to provide rides and can receive either gas reimbursement or IRS tax-deduction documentation, if preferred. A Transportation Manager supervises day-to-day operations of the program, which is housed at Blount County Community Action Agency’s Office on Aging.   Love and appreciation of the elderly is Joani Shaver’s mantra…and the standard for the volunteers. SMiles is also lots of fun. In fact the volunteers who began in 2013 are still volunteering. What a compliment to any program!   To find out about volunteer commitment and requirements, visit the SMiles website www.blountcaa.org/volunteer. Or call 865-983-8411 x 26 to set an appointment to talk further about volunteering. You can also download the volunteer application and mail, or fax the completed application to their office: Blount County Community Action Agency, 3509 Tuckaleechee Pike, Maryville, TN 37803. If you live outside Blount County, check with your local council or office on aging for similar programs.
