As you know, we take pride in celebrating the diligent work law enforcement performs everyday on Small Town Dicks. But sometimes, it's the selfless act of a well-meaning citizen who saves the day. And that's what happened on the day we pick up this case and an older couple decided to step-in when they saw something wrong. This story has everything - a car chase, a remote cabin full of hair-raising evidence, a suspect on the verge of a terrible crime, and, most importantly, a little girl who is alive today because two people decided to do something. The detective: Detective JamieJamie has been in law enforcement for over eight years. She worked patrol for two and a half years before landing in her position as a detective, where her primary caseload is child abuse and sex crimes. Jamie is a member of her county's Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT), Inter-Agency Deadly Force Investigative Team (IDFIT), and Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children Task Force (CSEC). She loves reading, concerts, and beach vacations. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Police get what is a far too common call: A grown man has snuck into the DMs of a child and is now soliciting sex. The perpetrator is quickly caught and swears he'll never do it again and in doing so, he escapes prosecution. Three years pass and Detective Jaime gets another call about an online predator - and it turns out to be the same suspect following the same script. Jaime goes undercover to lure the suspect out for a meeting. Along the way, she dodges close calls that might give away her identity and scare off the predator before he's caught. Through excellent police work, the detective is able to confirm: Revenge is sweet. The detective: Detective JamieJamie has been in law enforcement for over eight years. The rise in myths and conspiracy theories about human trafficking have been one of the most frustrating parts of being a child abuse professional over the past few years. It has been a deadly game of whack a mole, because as soon as one myth or conspiracy theory is debunked, yet another arises.Dr. Maureen Kenny, a professor of psychology at Florida International University, set out to explore why and how these conspiracy theories were endorsed by a diverse college population in hopes that this would give us insight into better education strategies for the wider public. If you have ever moaned and groaned your way through a media report with whackadoodle ideas about trafficking or rolled your eyes at a movie that depicted it all wrong, this episode is for you. “Commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) includes child prostitution (or child sex trafficking), child sex tourism, child pornography, or other forms of transactional sex with children. The Youth Advocate Program International (YAPI) describes CSEC as a form of coercion and violence against children and a contemporary form of slavery.[12][13] A declaration of the World Congress Against the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children, held in Stockholm in 1996, defined CSEC as, "sexual abuse by the adult and remuneration in cash or in kind to the child or to a third person or persons. The child is treated as a sexual object and as a commercial object".[13] “Commercial sexual exploitation of adults (often referred to as "sex trafficking")[10] is a type of human trafficking involving the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of people, by coercive or abusive means for the purpose of sexual exploitation. Commercial sexual exploitation is not the only form of human trafficking and estimates vary as to the percentage of human trafficking which is for the purpose of transporting someone into sexual slavery. The BBC News cited a report by UNODC as listing the most common destinations for victims of human trafficking in 2007 as Thailand, Japan, Israel, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Turkey and the United States. The report lists Thailand, China, Nigeria, Albania, Bulgaria, Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine as major sources of trafficked persons.[11]” “Forced prostitution, also known as involuntary prostitution or compulsory prostitution, is prostitution or sexual slavery that takes place as a result of coercion by a third party. The terms "forced prostitution" or "enforced prostitution" appear in international and humanitarian conventions, such as the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, but have been inconsistently applied. "Forced prostitution" refers to conditions of control over a person who is coerced by another to engage in sexual activity.[1][2]” -Wikipedia --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

“Child sex tourism is a form of child sex trafficking, and is mainly centered on buying and selling children into sexual slavery.[17][18] It is when an adult travels to a foreign country for the purpose of engaging in commercially facilitated child sexual abuse.[19] Child sex tourism results in both mental and physical consequences for the exploited children, that may include "disease (including HIV/AIDS), drug addiction, pregnancy, malnutrition, social ostracism, and possibly death", according to the State Department of the United States.[19] Thailand, Cambodia, India, Brazil and Mexico have been identified as leading hotspots of child sexual exploitation.[20].” “Commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) includes child prostitution (or child sex trafficking), child sex tourism, child pornography, or other forms of transactional sex with children. The Youth Advocate Program International (YAPI) describes CSEC as a form of coercion and violence against children and a contemporary form of slavery.[11][12] A declaration of the World Congress Against the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children, held in Stockholm in 1996, defined CSEC as, "sexual abuse by the adult and remuneration in cash or in kind to the child or to a third person or persons. "Forced prostitution" generally refers to conditions of control over a person who is coerced by another to engage in sexual activity.[41]” “Child pornography, sometimes referred to as 'child abuse images',[21][22][23] refers to images or films depicting sexually explicit activities involving a child. As such, child pornography is often a visual record of child sexual abuse.[24][25][26] Abuse of the child occurs during the sexual acts which are photographed in the production of child pornography,[24][25][27][28] and the effects of the abuse on the child (and continuing into maturity) are compounded by the wide distribution and lasting availability of the photographs of the abuse.[29][30][31] Child sex trafficking often involves child pornography.[17] Children are commonly purchased and sold for sexual purposes without the parents knowing. In these cases, children are often used to produce child pornography, especially sadistic forms of child pornography where they may be tortured.[17]” --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

Disclaimer: Natasha originally recorded this podcast for her Healing Sols podcast. Natasha discusses the Myths & Facts of the Sex Trafficking of Minors with Allan Alexander, MFT. Allan works as a Clinical Field Lead with San Diego Youth Services. In particular, assessing for Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) in the youth that show up in juvenile hall. Allan shares typical myths about sex trafficking (i.e. this doesn't happen in my neighborhood, kids are kidnapped into sex slavery, this only happens to females, this only happens to poor people, drugs and mental health issues lead to risks, etc.). He also talks about risk factors we should be aware of such as lack of supportive adults in their lives, being a runaway or truant youth, being kicked out of your home (higher likelihood for LGBTQ+ kids), having domestic violence or other abusive dynamics in the home and lack of community resources.
What is Child Sex Trafficking? What causes it? Who's responsible? How do we prevent it? How do we support survivors? And how do we see justice for victims? We have partnered with the Hague Institute for Innovation of Law (HiiL) Hub East Africa to bring you this very necessary and urgent conversation. We recognize that it's an emotive topic that's hardly discussed and often shrouded in mystery. We aim to change that by raising awareness. It is estimated that there are about 20,000 victims of child sex trafficking in Kenya according to IJM Kenya and only a fraction of the cases are reported to the police. Additionally, the 2020 Trafficking In Persons Report by the United States Department of State indicated that out of the 853 reported victims of trafficking in Kenya in 2019, 351 were girls and 227 were boys while the DCI's Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU) proactively identified 144 trafficking victims during raids and encounters with commercial sex establishments. Similarly, a report by the East Africa Rights Child Network (EARCN) on Child Trafficking and Unsafe Migration in Kenya in the time of Covid 19, highlighted that Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) affects many children, who are trafficked into brothels and the sex tourism industry, and cases of Online Child Sexual Exploitation of Children (OCSE) were noted. To help us dissect this issue, we invited 3 guests:Timothy Kihungu, Attorney at International Justice Mission (IJM) KenyaMargaret Njihia, Child Psychologist and Director, Sterling Performance Africa (SPA)John Ngoti, Child Therapist, Childline Kenya To report any cases of child abuse, neglect, exploitation or trafficking, call the FREE HOTLINE 116, run by Childline Kenya. To help/partner, please contact us on social media. This episode was recorded on April 23rd, 2020, to raise awareness for the effects of Covid lockdown on domestic violence. Covid's impact on the safety of women and children in abusive households continues to grow to this day, almost 1 year later. In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this video, Jill interviews Dabney Evans, PhD, MPH, an expert in health and human rights with a focus on women's health and gender violence. Dr Evans shares her knowledge and insights about risk factors for domestic violence (such as stress and unemployment), how COVID has magnified a pre-existing violence pandemic in our society, and how the women's reproductive rights are being challenged during COVID (both on an inter-personal and government/policy level). She shares important resources to help support reproductive rights and fight against gender violence. Dabney P. Evans, PhD, MPH is an exceptional public health leader, serving as an Associate Professor of Global Health in the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University. Her current research projects focus on gender-based violence, and sexual and reproductive health and rights. My special guest today is Nola Brantley, Founder & CEO of Nola Brantley Speaks. She is also one of our Expert Coaches for the GoodHeart App launching very soon. Nola is best known as a nationally acclaimed advocate who has played a large role in spear-heading the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children awareness and advocacy movement in the state of California since 2004. Nola has traveled the continuum of abuse that many sex trafficking victims and survivors have traveled. Nola has become nationally recognized as a powerful voice for the issue of child sex trafficking through her moving and information packed public speaking. Her experience with the compounded risk factors of poverty, unaddressed trauma, intergenerational abuse, foster care involvement and misuse of authority all serve to give Nola a powerful firsthand understanding not only of the CSEC issue, but also of the underlying societal tapestry that creates and perpetuates the current epidemic of exploitation and violence plaguing the U.S. Her hard work and perpetual vigilance has brought both focus and concrete resources to this chronically underserved and largely unrecognized population of victimized youth. She has taught innovative aftercare methods for abuse survivors to individuals from around the world. Currently Nola is working as a child sex trafficking subject matter expert and a sought after master-trainer through her consultancy company Nola Brantley Speaks. Nola has trained over 150,000 professionals and community members to date. I can't wait to hear from Nola. January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month and DCS Talks invited two subject matter experts, Pierce Beckham the Senior Director of Investigations in the Office of Child Safety and Dr. Martha Wike a clinical psychologist in the Knoxville region at DCS. Both guests are instrumental in policy development, training delivery, service provisions and data analysis to address the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Minors in Tennessee. Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Minors involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of commercial sex act with a minor. It can happen in any community and victims can be any race, gender, or nationality. Traffickers might use violence, manipulation, or false promises of romantic relationships to lure victims into trafficking situations. DCS works with a wide network of partners to address CSEM including state and federal law enforcement, court systems, legislators, service providers and community members to address this complex social problem.

Annika Mack, originally from Denver, Colorado, was a runaway youth and victim of human trafficking as a teenager. As a survivor, Ms. Mack showed incredible strength and courage by testifying against her trafficker, who was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Today Ms. Mack is a survivor advocate and mentor who speaks publicly to raise awareness and educate communities on the issue of human trafficking. She is one of twelve survivors on the state of California's Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) action team and advisory board, through which she contributes the creation of policies. She has lobbied for statewide human trafficking bills and has spoken on the topic in juvenile halls, for statewide programs such as Victims of Crime, and was selected as a keynote speaker at multiple conferences through the United States. Ms. Mack lends her expertise on the issue of human trafficking by serving as a contractor with The Blue Campaign for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and by training various organizations, hospitals, tattoo shops, and hotels to recognize the signs of human trafficking. She appears in an anti-trafficking documentary titled “Can You See Me Now?” Ms. Mack believes strongly in this quote by Harriet Tubman, “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. We often focus--rightly--on the needs of victims and survivors. But "Secondary Survivors" are the supporters and loved ones of any victim of sexual violence, who may themselves become traumatized. In this episode, we focus on the healing needs of everyone around the victim, to recognize and understand how sexual violence impacts #FamiliesToo. #HealMeToo Festival hit show Growing Wild, created and performed by Broadway's Shona Tucker, tells the story of a family's inter-generational quest to heal from the trauma of a mysterious sex crime. Hear Shona share in-depth with expert family therapist Fiona True of the Ackerman Institute for the Family, about different ways the members of her family have been impacted by the murder of her older sister, a victim of organized crime, while employed in sex work. The Next Mile Podcast, in collaboration with the Minnesota Trucking Association, presents a special series examining the trucking industry’s efforts in the fight against human trafficking. In Part 1, we talk with Minnesota Trucking Association President John Hausladen. We get an overview of the efforts to combat human trafficking in Minnesota, including MTA’s role as a host and part of a coalition for the Briefing on Commercial Sexual Exploitation. MTA member carriers from across the state participated in the coalition event, which highlighted the heart-wrenching issues related to human trafficking and, once again, underscored the importance of situational awareness and the value of training.
On this episode of the Red X Podcast, Nicole and Lance interview Sarah Bendsten from Shared Hope International. Also, Nicole reports on Minnesota’s new task force. [caption id="attachment_87" align="alignleft" width="345"] Christmas Tree Lighting[/caption] Lance and Nicole chat about Apex’s annual Christmas tree lighting in which Lance teased that the tree was solar powered and had the parents all take a picture of the tree and the children with the flash to turn on the town Christmas lights! Lance asks the listener to send in ideas for how Apex should light the tree next year at the Red X podcast website: http://redxpodcast.com/contact/. In this week’s icebreaker, Lance asks why people do trust falls. In the movie, Unbridled, which tells the story of the recovery of a young trafficking victim, the girls do a trust fall exercise at the equine therapy stables. Nicole comments on the difficulty children who have been severely abused have with trust. Appropriate trust must quite literally be taught again to children who have all trust betrayed during pivotal periods of development. [caption id="attachment_85" align="alignright" width="336"] Trust Fall Fail (video)[/caption] Lance confesses that while researching “trust falls” he came across the Trust Fall Fail on YouTube. And Nicole shared her all-time favorite YouTube cat video: a cat that jumps on a ceiling fan. In Red X Podcast news, Nicole reports on Minnesota’s new task force that was enacted by Minnesota’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation so that the police force in the Minneapolis area will be able to help bring down the organizers of human trafficking rings. Task forces help streamline collaborative efforts and allow for a more agile response. The task force was empowered by a $700, 000 federal grant. For those who are from the Minneapolis area who would like to support this effort, the non-profit, The Link might be a good starting point. And for those who would like to be involved with their local municipality’s efforts, consider reaching out to your local police department and offering to help with putting together a grant writing team. This episode’s guest is Sarah Bendsten, policy counsel, from Shared Hope International. Sarah is originally from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and now lives in Minneapolis, MN where she and her husband just moved. Her husband is originally from Germany but they met in Kenya when she was doing a women’s empowerment fellowship there through Equality Now. They were married in Denmark in a private civil ceremony and then moved to Sengal before also saying vows in an American wedding. [caption id="attachment_86" align="alignleft" width="297"] Sarah Bendtsen of Shared Hope International[/caption] Sarah learned first-hand about the realities of human trafficking as a 21 year old undergraduate student on a study abroad program in Thailand. It was there that she also realized that to change this injustice, one must change the culture in which it is normalized. She is drawn to policy work because if you can change the hearts and minds of laws, you can likewise change the culture. Shared Hope’s mission is to eradicate the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children. The Organization offers a number of trainings on how to bring awareness to identifying and responding appropriately to a trafficking situation. One of the programs offered is called Chosen and it is used in schools. Each year they also host international conferences that bring people who are fighting this issue from all over the world. Shared Hope has a small legal team but rely heavily on boots on the ground and partnerships and makes it more appropriate for what they are advocating for. Shared Hope has volunteer ambassadors all over the country to help connect boots on the ground and citizens to the work they are doing. Email Policy@sharedhope.org to find out who is an ambassador in your area or to become an ambassador. Sarah says there must be a cultural change for hearts and minds to shift how our society sees perpetrators and victims. Historically, buyers of sex from children are seen as being caught up in a bad situation. In many states, buyers do not have as harsh as penalties as the trafficker. But, the buyer is the one who is performing the rape and supplying the demand that drives trafficking. In the last episode, Nacole also mentioned that buyers were able to get off with a misdemeanor. There are still 27 states that will allow minors to be charged as a prostitute and yet what 16 year old would allow herself to be raped for someone else’s profit? We misplace criminality when we let buyers off the hook and then punish the children who survived. We also must have a clearer understanding of what trauma looks like for the victims. Sarah says it doesn’t always look like a victim standing up and saying “I need help”. It looks like running away and cussing out the judge. In the next episode (004) Dr. Heather Pane Seifert will help unpack the psychological effects of trauma. If the listener would like to know how their states stand on where they place criminality in a trafficking situation, Sarah says to look at your state’s definition. Is there language in the state’s trafficking law that applies to a buyer? In 2011 Shared Hope began their Protected Innocence Program that evaluates states Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children law. Find your state’s report card and look at the legal full analysis of recommendations. Tennessee was this year’s top grade. They have incredibly comprehensive laws and have had so for some time. West Virginia moved from a D to a B by adopting the uniform act as did California, which just adopted the Safe Harbor Law. There are still 5 D states and although they score low, in practice they may be providing more advocacy than their score reflects. Likewise, Sarah points out that they do not evaluate how laws are being implemented, so an A state in practice may still need significant improvement in implementation. Mayor Lance Olive offers that we can still serve at a municipal level by being connected and aware to support local law enforcement efforts. Sarah also adds that municipalities can create their own ordinances even if they see gaps in the state response. Go to Sharedhope.org to learn more and you can find them on facebook and twitter.
