Jemma Davidson, RnIB Customer Voice Insight Coordinator shares the latest opportunities for blind and partially sighted people to get involved in with RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey. Opportunities highlighted this week included: Living Well with Sight Loss Parent Pathways Course - New Structure and Sessions Parent Pathways is part of the Children Young Person and Families team's offer for parents and carers of children with vision impairment.  This used to be delivered as a 6-week course but, after feedback the structure has been changed so that parents can now select from a range of options to suit their specific needs: • First Steps covers early support around diagnosis and gives families the chance to meet and share experiences over a two-week period. • Focus on... sessions are one-off, 90 minute presentations on specific topics, such as education, finances and play. All sessions are free to attend, take place online and are facilitated by RNIB Family Support Officers. New dates are now on the RNIB website — any families wanting to book can do so by visiting — https://www.rnib.org.uk/pathways Redesigning the World of Magic: Magic For People With Visual Impairments. For centuries the visual nature of magic performances has limited the participation of individuals with blindness, preventing them from fully experiencing the wonder and joy this art form offers. In the unique situation where magicians encounter someone without sight, they are challenged to reimagine their tricks and find innovative ways to engage the other senses, such as touch, sound, and even smell. At the MAGIC Lab with Dr. Gustav Kuhn, psychology professor at the University of Plymouth and director of research, their mission is to do just that: to level the playing field and create a space where everyone can experience the allure and excitement of magic. They aim to show that the importance of creating magic for individuals with blindness goes beyond the immediate impact on their lives, as it also represents a transformative force that can reshape our world into a more inclusive and compassionate place. This project will empower this community to participate in artistic expression, promoting learning and well-being while challenging societal norms and stereotypes surrounding blindness. To ensure the success of this endeavour, Tyler and Dr Gustav are committed to recruiting volunteers from the blind community with various types of visual impairments and ages. Those interested in participating will take part in a virtual conversation with Tyler and will be asked some thoughtfully crafted questions regarding their experience living with visual impairment and general perceptions and thoughts about magic performances. The discussions should last roughly 45 minutes, and participants need no prior experience with magic! In fact, during or after each call, Tyler will personally teach each volunteer a simple yet powerful trick that they can immediately perform for anyone – anytime, anywhere. If you are interested in their research you can either email gibgot@usc.edu or calling +1 818 416 2467 (as this is a USA phone number call charges will apply). "As cognitive psychologists we are very much interested in these unconscious processes. Most of the processes that are involved to create your reality you are not consciously aware of. There are more computations that happen in our unconscious minds to allow us to solve a lot of these problems. As within psychoanalysis we are often unaware of a lot of these processes, and as magicians this is very useful because it allows us to manipulate your experiences without you necessarily being aware of this."     Episode Description: Professor Kuhn utilizes his expertise as a cognitive psychologist to deepen our understanding of the psychological processes that operate when we observe magic. We discuss the power and persuasiveness of misdirection and what's called the 'magician's force'. These are both techniques designed to distract for the purpose of disguise. In addition to being used for entertainment, these maneuvers need to be understood as they can be part of legal and political manipulation. Gustav showed me a sleight hand trick and then explained what the trick was. We also discussed how both observing and learning magic has application in settings to improve an individual's sense of wellbeing.    Our Guest: Gustav Kuhn, Ph.D. is a cognitive psychologist with a background as a semi-professional magician. Gustav now directs the MAGIC (Mind Attention and General Illusory Cognition) lab at Goldsmith, University of London, where they use magic to uncover the functioning of the human mind. Gustav is one of the leading researchers in the Science of Magic, and his research team spans a wide range of disciplines. For example, Alice Pailhès is currently studying different types of forcing techniques to learn more about how magicians covertly influence people's choices. Other researchers in his team are using eye-tracking technologies to examine how magicians misdirect their audience's attention. Steve Bagienski is exploring different ways in which magic can be used to enhance people's well-being. This research shows that magic offers a unique tool to enhance different aspects of our mental health and wellbeing.  Gustav has published more than 80 scientific papers and his work often appears on Radio, TV, and the press, and he has also written a book on the psychology of magic, entitled Experiencing The Impossible. Gustav is a member of the Magic Circle and the President of the Science of Magic Association.

While traditionally magicians have been men, there are more and more successful women entering the male dominated industry. But do they have to work harder to impress? Gustav Kuhn from Goldsmiths University of London and colleagues carried out a study revealing a very strong gender bias but this was erased comparatively simply by asking people to work out how the magic tricks worked. Technology companies are developing artificial intelligence that can detect your mood. They are doing this by reading facial expressions but is this too simplistic an approach? Today it’s great to have Gustav Kuhn on the show. Born in Switzerland,  Kuhn discovered his passion for magic at the age of 13, and much of his teenage years were dedicated to the art of illusion and deception.  At the age of 19 he moved to London to follow his dream of becoming a professional magician, but his career took a dramatic change after he discovered a keen interest for psychology. Gustav went on to study psychology at Sussex University, and towards the end of his PhD, he noticed a direct link between magic and psychology. His unique background in science and magic allowed him to build bridges between these two domains, which helped him establish a science of magic. Kuhn is now a Reader at Goldsmiths University of London, and director of the MAGIC-Lab (Mind Attention & General Illusory Cognition).  He is one of the pioneering researchers in the Science of Magic and he is one of the founding members and president of the Science of Magic Association. His latest book is called “Experiencing the Impossible: The Science of Magic”. What is the link between psychology and magic? The link between perception and magic What is magic? What is not magic?
