In this episode, we examine the Pebblebee Halo, a $59.99 personal safety device that combines emergency alert functionality with item-tracking capabilities through Apple Find My and Google Find Hub. The device features a pull-apart activation mechanism that triggers a 130-decibel siren and 150-lumen strobe light, while simultaneously sharing your live location with up to five trusted contacts through the Pebblebee app. We discuss the practical implications of its dual-purpose design, the rechargeable battery that claims up to 12 months per charge, and the included 12-month Alert Live subscription that enables the location-sharing feature. The conversation explores whether dedicated safety hardware offers meaningful advantages over smartphone-based solutions, how the silent alert mode changes the device's utility, and what happens when the first year of service expires. We also consider the trade-offs between the device's compact keychain form factor, its IP66 water resistance, and the requirement for cellular connectivity during emergencies. Watch the video version hereWelcome to a new essay-style episode for Season 2! Today, we dive deep into the philosophy of Everyday Carry (EDC) and introduce a new concept: EDC Optimization.Everyone has an everyday carry—your phone, wallet, and keys are the non-negotiables. I discuss whether carrying extra items (like a camera, gaming device, or multi-tool) is bogging you down, or if it's providing essential creature comforts and a much-needed security blanket.I also cover practical steps on how to evaluate your EDC loadout, choose high-value gear (like a quality Leatherman vs. a dollar-store tool), and stress the importance of understanding local laws regarding items like knives. My Personal EDC Loadout: I reveal the gear I'm currently carrying, including my favorite mechanical watch (Steinhart Ocean 500), my preferred multi-tool (the Gerber Dime), and why a power bank and flashlight are essential.▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬00:00 Intro00:16 Welcome to the Essay Style Podcast (Season 2)00:46 Question: Is Your Everyday Carry Making Your Life Worse?01:16 Defining EDC: Beyond Phone, Wallet, Keys02:41 Expanding the Loadout: Multi-Tools, Headphones, and Watches03:36 Why EDC is Special: It's Highly Individualized05:04 The Struggle: Carrying a Gaming Device (Anbernic RG35XX Plus) & Camera (DJI Pocket 3)06:33 Psychological Benefits: The Security Blanket Argument07:27 A Real-Life Example: My Multi-Tool Saved Me in a Hotel Room08:24 Why a Dedicated Camera is Better Than Your Phone10:14 Experience Over Convenience: Dedicated Items vs. Phone Distractions12:13 How to Start: Organizing and Deciding Your EDC Items14:57 Sling Bag vs. Backpack: The Loadout Limit15:53 Value Proposition: Balancing Cheap vs. High-Quality Gear17:10 Evaluating Your EDC: Fun & Utility Check-ins18:53 IMPORTANT: Abide by Your Local EDC Laws (German Knife Laws)20:46 The Hobby: Introducing EDC Optimization21:54 My Current EDC Loadout: Phone, Watch, Wallet23:03 My Sling Bag Contents: Camera, Gaming, and Power24:00 My Multi-Tool & Flashlight: The Gerber Dime and Wuben X2 Pro25:05 Support the Podcast! In this deep-dive exploration of everyday carry philosophy, we break down the essential components of a thoughtful EDC system that goes far beyond just firearms. The modern preparedness mindset requires careful consideration of what deserves space in your pockets and on your person. We unpack the logic behind carrying specific items, from quality flashlights that see daily use even in daylight hours, to reliable folding knives, medical equipment, and spiritual items that provide protection on multiple levels. Through practical demonstrations and candid discussion, we reveal our personal carry setups while explaining the reasoning behind each choice.Firearms selection takes center stage as we debate carry positions, holster designs, and why most shooters don't need to modify their carry guns. The conversation extends to off-body options like fanny packs (aesthetic concerns aside) and vehicle preparedness considerations that might make the difference in a crisis situation. We tackle tough questions about family acceptance of firearms, bugging in versus bugging out, and maintaining spiritual readiness in increasingly turbulent times.Whether you're new to self-reliance or a seasoned veteran looking to refine your system, this episode provides actionable insights on balancing practicality with preparedness. The trio emphasizes that simply carrying isn't enough—training is essential, covering everything from safety and marksmanship to low-light scenarios and defensive movement. They tackle the balance between investing in gear versus training and offer guidance on how often to train. Common mistakes are addressed, like inconsistent carry and training only on a static range. This downtime turned out to be a blessing in disguise, though, because it helped Cameron discover his passion for teaching Jiu Jitsu. After receiving his purple belt, Cameron decided to make the pilgrimage to OCBJJ under the instruction of professor Tom Deblass in order to pursue his goal of becoming the best in the world. He has worked his way through the belt rankings, earning his black belt in January 2024. With Deblass's coaching, he has won the Pan-American Games, American Nationals, ADCC Open, and earned silver and bronze medals in the IBJJF Worlds. OCBJJ is a tight-knit family and Cameron couldn't be happier to be a part of the world-class instruction taking place at Ocean County Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.@cameronmellottThanks for listening to My White Belt!Order your My White Belt Shirts here: https://www.mywhitebelt.com/shopDonate to support our work here: https://cash.app/$JimTrick or Venmo @Jim-Trick (0423 if they ask) Join our free, My White Belt Wednesday, newsletter here: https://www.mywhitebelt.com/Follow us on Instagram @mywhitebeltSupport My White Belt when you shop ORIGIN x JOCKO FUEL by using discount code: TRICK10 https://originmaine.com/?ref=iRlDmaPt8CdIHSBighorn Athletics is the official grappling tape of My White Belt!Use code Mywhitebelt to save 10%https://www.bighornathletics.com/Check out Tactition Trays for your Every Day Carry! https://tacticiantrays.com/Use code: TRICK10 to save $$$Submit podcast questions here:https://www.mywhitebelt.com/podcast

Quick Series Overview Back to Basics Series: A 12-part series covering essential preparedness topics to build a strong survival foundation. Episode Summary: In this episode of the Back to Basics series, Coby and Cam break down the essentials of Everyday Carry (EDC)—the gear and mindset that keep you ready for anything, no matter where you are. They cover the must-have EDC items, discuss how to tailor your carry to your environment, and explore the balance between preparedness and practicality. Whether you're a hardcore prepper or just starting to think about what you carry, this episode will help you build an EDC setup that makes sense for your lifestyle. Episode Notes: What is EDC? EDC stands for Everyday Carry—the essential gear you have with you at all times. Designed to keep you prepared for daily tasks, unexpected situations, and even emergencies. Can vary depending on lifestyle, location, and personal preference. Core EDC Items Knife or Multitool – A must-have for utility, self-defense, or survival. Flashlight – Small but powerful; crucial for emergencies, power outages, and self-defense. Wallet – Keep it simple but secure, including cash, ID, and emergency contacts. Phone – Your most versatile tool, but don't rely on it for everything. Firestarter – Lighter or ferro rod for emergency situations. Pen & Notebook – Useful for notes, navigation, or leaving messages. Watch – Preferably analog for reliability in power outages. Paracord/Bracelet – A simple survival tool with multiple uses. Self-Defense Option – Pepper spray, firearm (where legal), or a defensive tool. Situational EDC Adjustments Urban EDC: Keep it low-profile with a multitool, flashlight, and cash. Wilderness EDC: Add fire-starting gear, a small first-aid kit, and a whistle. Work/Office EDC: A discreet setup—pen, multitool, flashlight, and extra phone battery. The Philosophy of EDC Prepared, Not Paranoid – Carry what makes sense, don't go overboard. Layering Your Gear – Everyday Carry → Vehicle Kit → Bug Out Bag. Training Matters – Having the gear is one thing; knowing how to use it is another. Final Thoughts Your EDC is personal—build it based on your daily life and risk factors. Keep it simple, practical, and effective. Always reevaluate and refine your carry setup over time.
