Deutsche Grammophon is delighted to share a new, meditative recording of Arvo Pärt's Spiegel im Spiegel from Icelandic composer, conductor and producer Viktor Orri Árnason. The audio version of this extended single, on which Árnason plays both viola and piano, comes out on 8 September 2023. A music video, which the artist describes as a “moving painting”, will follow on 11 September, Pärt's 88th birthday. The track will also act as a prelude to the artist's debut DG album, a project he has developed in collaboration with soprano Álfheiður Erla Guðmundsdóttir and which is set for release later this year.  An early example of Pärt's tintinnabular style, the mesmeric masterpiece that is Spiegel im Spiegel was originally written for violin and piano but now exists in multiple versions. Árnason more than captures its sense of stillness and serenity in his intimate interpretation, slowing the tempo to amplify its reflective qualities. He plays the mirrored ascending and descending phrases of the melodic line on the viola. Beneath this, bell-like piano notes sound in the accompaniment, like raindrops softly falling into a pool of water. A 59-year-old woman who abducted and trafficked 11 children in the 1990s for financial gain was pronounced guilty and sentenced to death on Monday by a court in Guizhou province.一名59岁的妇女在上世纪90年代为谋利拐卖11名儿童，周一（9月18日）在贵州省一家法院被定罪并被判处死刑。The Guiyang Intermediate People's Court announced the death penalty for Yu Huaying, a native of Yunnan province, after determining that her conduct — seeking illicit benefits by abducting and trafficking children from Chongqing and Guizhou to Hebei province between 1993 and 1996 — constituted the crime of child abduction.贵阳市中级人民法院宣布对云南人余华英处以死刑，认定她的行为——1993年至1996年间从重庆、贵州拐卖儿童至河北省谋取非法利益——构成拐卖儿童罪。The court said in a statement that Yu carried out the abductions with the help of a man surnamed Gong, who died before the case was heard in July. Procuratorates nationwide approved the arrest of 10,923 people on suspicion of fraud in the first quarter of this year, ranking second on the list of all recorded crimes, according to the Supreme People's Procuratorate.They also initiated public lawsuits against 18,146 people involved in fraud in the quarter, ranking fifth among prosecuted crimes, it said.The form of fraud crimes is constantly changing, and in addition to telecom network fraud and financial fraud, new types of fraud involving pensions, medical insurance and investing in art continue to emerge, affecting the public's sense of gain, happiness and security, the SPP said.Some fraudsters pretend to provide "pension services" and investment in "elderly-care projects" to target the elderly, it added.In one case from May 2016, a man surnamed Fang in Handan, Hebei province, pretended to be a pension director, claiming to be able to handle pension insurance for people without work.He defrauded hundreds of people totaling about 3.7 million yuan ($535,000). He did pay out to some victims a total of 784,000 yuan in the name of "pensions "and "living expenses", but the rest was used for himself.The SPP said that more than half of the prosecuted fraud cases were well-organized and committed by multiple offenders. Fraud gangs have a clear division of labor, and some set up specialized companies under the cover of a so-called legal company, and they rent high-end office buildings and use a network platform for publicity and recruitment.Prosecutors found that fraudsters used means such as the telephone, the internet, artificial intelligence, big data analysis and others to commit fraud, as traditional cash transactions are gradually changing to online banking and payment platforms.Fraud in the network environment often spreads fast and involves a wide range of victims, yet the cost of crime is low and fraud can easily be copied by other criminals. All of these make the cost of case handling higher and prevention more difficult, said the SPP.Procuratorial organs have closely worked with public security organs to form a long-term cooperation mechanism in the joint crackdown, information exchange and evidence gathering.
