EP 558 HAREM SCAREM singer Harry Hess on producing, the bands history and new album Chasing Euphoria

Harem Scarem, the Canadian melodic hard rock band formed in 1987, has built a legacy on polished songwriting, tight arrangements, and emotive vocals. While the band's early sound was rooted in the melodic glam-infused rock popular in the late '80s and early '90s, their progression over the years has shown a clear evolution in maturity and depth. Their self-titled debut in 1991 introduced audiences to their signature blend of melody and power, and albums like Mood Swings and Voice of Reason solidified their place in melodic rock history.Throughout their career, the band has shifted lineups but remained consistent in its core songwriting duo of vocalist Harry Hess and guitarist Pete Lesperance. Known for crafting thoughtful lyrics and hook-laden choruses, Harem Scarem became particularly popular in Europe and Japan. Despite briefly disbanding in 2008 after the release of Hope, the band reunited in 2013, re-recorded Mood Swings as Mood Swings II, and has since continued creating new music while keeping a foot rooted in their classic sound. The band's latest album, Chasing Euphoria, is a continuation of that legacy—a blend of melodic intensity and lyrical introspection. While Hess continues to balance producing and engineering for other artists out of his own studio, the band remains a creative priority. Chasing Euphoria is available now through Frontiers Music. For more on the band and the album, visit harem-scarem.net, check out their Facebook page, or follow them on Spotify.https://www.facebook.com/harem.scarem.band

“Hey little Donna, still wanna? You said to ring you up when I was in Toronna”. Or perhaps: “Nothing matters but the weekend from a Tuesday point of view!”That's right, the Kings are here, with new music and the “Always Off The Deep End” Special, featuring the single of the same name and more of their latest songs that sound as great as their timeless hit “This Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide”, which we'll revisit because how do you deny the tune that all those years ago got them signed to a world-wide deal back when world famous producer Bob (Pink Floyd The Wall, KISS, Peter Gabriel) Ezrin dropped by to visit and checked the band out and liked what he heard. He agreed to mix the tracks The Kings had recorded but soon discovered that the whole thing needed to be re-done. He approached ElektraRecords in Los Angeles with The Kings' tapes and the unknown band was signed. The project was released as “The Kings Are Here”. ‘Switchin' To Glide', was put out and did get noticed but the tune was really two songs in one and the band insisted they be released together. So when the segue ‘This Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide' was released radio really picked up on it. Even at over five minutes in length, it caught on all over the USA and Canada with huge airplay in every major market and stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 for six months. 40 plus years later, it sounds as good as it did the first time. So, Jeff and David Diamond and Mr. Zero dig in to all that and the newest Kings music too, created with collaborators including Ezrin, GGGarth Richardson, Harry Hess, and other world class producers and mixers. Lots of stories and music to go with. See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

It's a special Bonus/Metal episode of Baxie's Musical Podcast featuring Harry Hess--the lead singer of the Canadian Pop/Metal band, Harem Scarem. This is an incredible story of a band that would release their first album just six weeks before Nirvana released thier 1991 behemouth "Nevermind". That album would usher in a seismic shift in music by ushering in the explosion of Grunge that would soon dominate radio, record promotion, concerts, MTV, and more for the next several years. Undeterred by this, Harem Scarem would release 15 more albums and would become ridiculously success in other parts of the world. Would they have been the next Bon Jovi or Whitesnake if they had come out two years earlier? That's hard to say. But Harry Hess certainly has some incredible opinions about it. Great to get the chance to talk with Linkin Park's Dave "Phoenix" Farrell. We talked about the start of the band, and why he wasn't in it for the first album. He told me he stepped out to play with another band, then came back into the fold just before the debut album dropped. He tells me about the "latest" song "Lost". It was recorded for the Meteora album, but didn't make it. Phoenix explained why. "It sat too close to a couple other songs that were on the record". He said they set it aside and found it on a hard drive and brought it back. As far as the fans, he said "People seem to be really enjoying it...it's a huge win for us". We talked about the late Chester Bennington. He recalled loving hearing his voice again on the songs after 20 years. For those that never had a chance to meet Chester, he said "Chester was a very 3, if not 4 dimensional person". He talked about how good he was with his kids, and what a warm caring guy he was. Of course, I couldn't not talk about Golf with Phoenix. He a big fan of the sport.   Harem Scarem is a Canadian band that formed in the late 80s. Today, singer Harry Hess joins me to talk about the band, Canadian music, the vinyl version of their second album Mood Swings and lots more. He told me about starting the band as teenagers in Toronto in the 80s. He said the sound of the band changed with the advent of the grunge era. He told me how much he liked some of the bands that came out of the Seattle scene.  "We could do whatever we want, because no one had any expectations". He said the biggest representation of the sound of the band is the second album, Mood Swings. He also told me about their success outside of North America. "To this day they're our biggest territory" - talking about the Philippines. He talked about crisscrossing Canada in the early years and what a slog some of those trips were, as opposed to Europe where the towns are much closer. "Canada is about the toughest place to tour, getting from town to town." As far as why some bands break the invisible wall and find success in America? He spoke to the fact that Harem Scarem really didn't have a deal which allowed them to be released in the U.S. for several years into their existence. Speaking of Canadian rock, we talked about that, too. The hair band era sprouted a lot of metal bands from the Toronto area especially. He brought back some memories of some acts I haven't thought of in years. He also told me about a legendary musician who has a studio not far from his. Great conversation with Harry! -Meltdown- https://wrif.com/shows/meltdown-on-wrif/

They say that laughter is the best medicine, but for Canadian guitarist and songwriter Darren Michael Boyd, music has been the ultimate cure. After a life-altering car accident, the Ottawa and Toronto-based musician created his debut album, “Lifting The Curse,” as a therapy for the physical and psychological complications that followed the accident. Painstakingly writing, recording, and producing the 9-track album himself, Boyd only called upon outside help for one track, “Was It Something I Said,” which features drums by Emily Dolan Davies (The Darkness, Kim Wilde.) Mastering was done by Harry Hess at H-Bomb Mastering (Barenaked Ladies, Danko Jones, Monster Truck.) Watch “The Earth Is B Flat” at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VbNI5y054c Watch the brand new video for “was it something I said” (filmed in isolation) at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AIs9iv5yNE Darren has toured and recorded with a variety of artists, such as Black Ju-Ju, Creeping Beauty, and Famous Underground (featuring Juno award-winning vocalist Nicholas Walsh). He was invited multiple occasions to privately audition for platinum-selling artist Fefe Dobson, and asked to write songs for Alice Cooper’s daughter Calico Cooper, and long time bassist Chuck Garric’s band Beasto Blanco. Darren received a scholarship to Guitar Workshop Plus in Toronto, with some of the best players in the business as instructors (Paul Gilbert/Billy Sheehan/Sue Foley). He has shared the stage with such acts as One-Eyed Doll, Wednesday 13, Yngwie Malmsteen, Stryper, Beasto Blanco, and Lee Aaron. In the spring of 2019 he joined the Mississippi Mudds Theatre Group to play guitar for a sold-out run of Queen’s We Will Rock You. The Mississippi Mudds won the Ottawa Faces Magazine Award for Favourite Theatre Group for that year. In the spring of 2020, Boyd was voted best local musician, and best guitar teacher, in the Ottawa Valley/North Grenville Readers Choice Awards. He is currently hard at work on a follow up to “Lifting the Curse”, with an early fall release in sight.
