Joey Graziano was an executive vice president for the NBA with global responsibilities when he began working with Pacers Sports & Entertainment on the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend in Indianapolis. The way he tells it, Graziano soon became convinced that the Indiana Pacers, Indiana Fever and the city of Indianapolis on the whole presented enormous potential for growth. Six months ago, he left the NBA and became the executive vice president of strategy and new business ventures for Pacers Sports & Entertainment. Just to refresh your memory, that's the company controlled by the Herb Simon family that owns the Pacers and Fever. Last month, PS&E announced a deal with Hartbeat, the production company founded by comedian and actor Kevin Hart, to produce live entertainment in conjunction with key dates on the schedules of the Pacers and Fever, as well as big events downtown. The first Hartbeat production, a music and comedy festival, will take place during WNBA All-Star Weekend in July in Indianapolis. In this week's edition of the IBJ Podcast, Graziano discusses preparations for the All-Star Weekend, the deal with Hartbeat, how Caitlin Clark and the rest of the Fever can make big strides in her second season, and how PS&E views several new projects by Gainbridge Fieldhouse as part of an overreaching strategy. After over 4 years, Mayanna Berrin returns to the podcast for a third time! This time, we have a lot to catch up on and share with you. Hours before their Sundance premieres, we spoke with the writing fellows of Women Write Now, Hartbeat's annual comedic screenwriting fellowship for Black women in partnership with the Sundance Institute. In addition to having the three writing fellows on, we were also joined by Hartbeat's Head of Film, Candice Wilson-Cherry, who takes us through how the program is designed to directly address the lack of BIPOC women in leadership positions like showrunners and in writers' rooms. We also were joined by Hey Boo director Logan Browning who you might know from The Perfection and Dear White People. And in addition to diving into the art of comedy, we also dig into the art of directing for comedy. All of these shorts are directed by actors — the other two being Tika Sumpter and Nicole Byer. Godfrey L. Simmons, Jr. is an award-winning actor, producer, director, and playwright who has spent over thirty years amplifying the voices of marginalized people and communities. And he is a father to Samuel. He is Artistic Director for HartBeat Ensemble in Hartford, CT, where he has co-produced the Off-Broadway virtual production of American Dreams with Working Theater, . In 2012, he co-founded Civic Ensemble, a regional theatre in Ithaca, NY. For Civic, he directed Eugene O'Neill's All God's Chillun Got Wings and appeared in Judy Tate's Fast Blood and Athol Fugard's My Children! My Africa!. Godfrey was a Producing Artist for Off-Broadway's Epic Theatre Ensemble for four years, appearing in The Winning Side, A More Perfect Union, Widowers' Houses (which Godfrey co-adapted with Ron Russell), Measure for Measure, Einstein's Gift, and A Hard Heart, among other plays. Also for Epic,.he co-wrote and starred in a documentary play about the election of President Barack Obama, Dispatches From (A)mended America. Godfrey and his colleague Brandt Adams, traveled throughout the American South interviewing 100 Southerners about the election. He won the 1999 Audelco Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in John Henry Redwood's Old Settler opposite Leslie Uggams at Primary Stages. He appeared in award-winning productions at Playwrights Horizons (Betty's Summer Vacation, Obie Award-Best Play) and Round House Theatre (Home, Helen Hayes Award-Best Production). His radio show The Griot Hour appeared from 2015-2019 on the Ithaca, NY Community Radio station WRFI, where he has just begun co-hosting the Black Lives Matter Forum.
