I quote John McLaughlin “I find Indian music very funky. I mean it's very soulful, with their own kind of blues. But it's the only other school on the planet that develops improvisation to the high degree that you find in jazz music. So we have a lot of common ground.” Pushkar Lele and Kuldeep Barve joins us on Audiogyan and we will be talking about “Improvisation in music”. It's going to be a bi-lingual conversation in English and Marathi. Pushkar is a renowned Hindustani classical vocalist and Founder-Director of ‘Gandhara School of Music'. More about his Gurus, rich repertoire and enriching journey of learning music in the show notes. Kuldeep is a classical guitarist. His practice is influenced by jazz and Indian classical music. He is a co-founder and a core member of the Pune Guitar Society. Welcome Pushkar & Kuldeep! It's an honor to have you on Audiogyan. Thanks for giving your time. As I started of with John McLaughlin's quote, I wanted to document some of your thoughts on “Improvisation” - when it comes to Hindustani Classical and Western Classical music with a lot of Jazz which I believe has a lot of improvisation. Just as a small plug, you can also listen to “Jazz in India” where I interviewed Denzil Smith in episode 133. Questions What according to you is improvisation in the broadest sense? What does it mean to improvise in a concert? When is it required? How spontaneous it is Do you see a similar pattern in a Western Classical performances? Or perhaps Jazz? Can we confidently say that each performance by Loius Amstrong was different even for the same set of tracks? Do you need to be qualified to improvise? If yes, when are you allowed to improvise in Guru Shishya Parampara? Do we have a lineage kind of a thing in Western music as well - which deals with improvisations? Especially in genres like Jazz, Blues or country? What is the difference between improvising, exploring or presenting with a different perspective? When do we call something is improvised? After how much deviation from originally planned is called improvisation? When does one improvise? When they do the same thing over and over again or when they see some room for exploration? What's a more common pattern? What are the extents of improvisation? Whats at stake when an artist is improvising? Can improvisations land in a loop of improvisations? How do you come back to the sthayi bhava? Does a well trained audience appreciate improvisations? When and how do improvisations become part of the main setup? As in, no longer be called as improvisations? Have you ever listened to a song and wondered, "how would this sound in a different genre?" There are so many different kinds of music - Western Classical, Jazz, Rock, Pop, Hindustani Classical - and each one, apart from having very different notational styles, gives off a certain vibe. But is it possible to take a song from one of these styles, but reinvent it in another? That's what we are doing in this episode. We are taking The Police's "Message in a Bottle", a 1979 Rock classic, and reimagining it, but as a classical String Trio! Listen as I break the song into different musical segments, reimagine each one, and rebuild the song with the same tune, but a completely different vibe - the sound of a Classical piece.

Today I have Denzil Smith us on Audiogyan. Denzil is an Indian film and stage actor, producer and is known for his stage and screen roles as a character actor. He has a long-standing association with both Motley Productions and PrimeTime Theatre. He has a huge body of work from working in Bollywood films, to theatre, from television to being a voice artist and more. Today we are here to discover his a relatively less know side which is love for music, especially Jazz. He has been host for jazz festivals, concerts at NCPA, Bluefrog and more… I am a Hindustani classical listener and I see a lot of similarities between Jazz and Hindustani Classical - which has to do with concepts of solo expression and the links between composition and improvisation. So I want to ask how would you define Jazz? What all components constitute Jazz? What according to you could be the reason why Jazz was so quickly adapted by Indians? Did it have anything to do with social position of Indian in 1920’s or just because talented people like Leon Abbey, Chic Chocolate and others who influenced other people at that time? Can you tell us something about Bombay Jazz Club? Who are few of the all-time-top Jazz Indian artists whose music is available online to buy or stream? The era from the 1930s to the 1950s is often called as the golden age of jazz in India. Did Jazz play any role in freedom struggle of India? What is the future of Jazz in India?

Deepa Ganesh has been a student of music, a journalist and has been writing about music since a long time. She speaks about her initial experiences on writing about music and how writing on music theory were emphasized more than music appreciation. According to her, writing from and on the experience of music is more important than the geometries of it. She has met renowned musicians like Kishori Amonkar, Gangubai Hangal and studied both the families of music , Carnatic and Hindustani Classical music. She feels music can be divided through their temporal qualities rather than rigidities of external systems. Bumpers by Hamid Hassan. Edited by Ritwik Kaikini.
What do you mean by Bandish? How has Bandish evolved and will evolve? What's missing in today's Bandishes? You have made few bandish in English language. How do you decide in which Raag it's suppose to be based on? What make you pick one raag over another? What's your plan to further break these boundaries and expand Hindustani Classical music.

In this Chaitime we talk to accomplished Hindustani Classical singer Madhuvanti Bhide. Born and raised in Pune, India, Madhuvanti’s fascination with singing started at an early age. Madhuvanti’s golden voice and poignant rendering is a powerful combination that indeed captivates audiences wherever she performs. Madhuvanti has been residing in the Bay area for more than twelve years and has given sparkling performances, time and again. She has received training from N.V.Diwan, Dr Alka Deo Marulkar, and for a brief period, from Pt. Arun Dravid, a renowned exponent of Jaipur Gharana. She has released two albums “Arpan" and "Ase Sur Gave”. In 1991, Madhuvanti was awarded the sangeet visharad degree by the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Pune. In this show Madhuvanti is also joined by Shraddha Joglekar, Artistic Director of Kalavishkar to talk about their upcoming performance Sur-Nartan.
