As we gain a better understanding of how misfiring brain circuits lead to mental health conditions, we'd like to be able to go in and nudge those circuits back into balance. But this is hard — literally — because the brain is encased in this thick bony skull. Plus, often the problem you want to target is buried deep in the middle of a maze of delicate brain tissue you need to preserve.Today we're going to be talking with neuroscientists who aim to solve this problem with sound. And not just any sound: ultrasound.Kim Butts Pauly and Raag Airan from the Stanford Department of Radiology are developing ultrasound technology in a couple of different ways to essentially reach into the brain to treat brain disorders that are otherwise hard to access. These uses of ultrasound haven't yet reached the clinic, but could be entering clinical testing in people in the next few years. Krishna says, "Those whose intellect (buddhi) is not attached everywhere (sarvatra), have conquered the self, and are free from desires through renunciation attain the perfection of 'freedom from karma' (naishkarmya-siddhi)" (18.49). Earlier, it was made clear that every karma (action) carries a blemish (18.48). At the same time, there is no escape from karma as our survival becomes impossible without performing karmas (3.8). In these perplexing scenarios, this verse gives three paths to attain freedom from karma-bandhan (bondage of action). The first path is the non-attachment of intellect everywhere. Our intellect is habitual of getting attached to multiple things, people and situations. We have different thought processes and yardsticks for each attachment making us poly-psychic. It is a journey of moving from multiple attachments to one attachment. The final stage is not to have any attachment or detachment as both are the same at the core. Krishna termed this as Veet Raag which is beyond Raag and Viraag (4.10); Anaasakti which is beyond Aasakti and Virakti. The second one is conquering the self. Krishna earlier called them sthita-pragna (stoic)(2.56) and also says we are our friend as well as enemy (6.5). If one conquers self, one is a friend to oneself and doesn't need any external sensual pleasures or else makes themselves their own enemies. The third one is the renunciation. So much is said about renunciation in the Bhagavad Gita. While Arjun was trying to renounce karma of participating and fighting the war, Krishna says we should renounce hatred and desires while performing karmas but not karmas (5.3). Krishna earlier cautioned that even the wise are confounded about the subtleties of karma and akarma (4.16). In this verse, he gives the path of non-attachment, conquering self and renunciation to attain freedom from karma.

Rural decay and urban apathy, all found their way in his satirical novels. The best known of which remains ‘Raag Darbari'. The novel inspired a TV serial in its time. Book 1 - follows Darrow, a Red, whose wife dies and he gets transformed into gold by the rebels to try to bring down the hierarchical society. One of my favorite sci-fi books - a re-read bc I wanna read the latest book that came out. 5 stars!The Fae Princes by Nikki St Crowe - book 4 of the Lost Boys saga — I liked it. I'm intrigued by Roc (crocodile) in a MMF book, but I was burned by this series not being finished when I burned through books 1-3, so it had a bit of an annoyance for me! But I did like it, and it was smutty, though not as smutty as the earlier books.Knightmaster by Anna Hackett - Since recording I have finished! And book 2 :) I wanted a quick read that I knew I would enjoy. Anna is such a consistent author for me. Alien romance :)Pucking Wild by Emily Rath - Hockey romance reverse age gap. Steamy, a lot of use of toys SQUEE - We're reading book 1 Pucking Around, which is mmmf, next month on the podcast!My Roommate is a Vampire by Jenna Levin - This is a super cute rom com. Liked the premise, and enjoyed the read.
