Antonio Xavier Vaz, better known as Chic Chocolate, was a popular jazz musician in Bombay. He also worked as a composer and trumpet player for Hindi film scores. Chic Chocolate and Chris Perry led a two-trumpet barrage at the Green's Hotel. Chic Chocolate was a nightclub performer for most of his career, but he was also a talented film composer, recording and arranging soundtracks for several films. Chic was a successful Bollywood music composer. In 1951, he worked as a music director for the first time on Nadaan. Aa Teri Tasvir Bana Lu by Talat Mahmood and Sari Duniya Ko Piichhe Chodkar by Lata Mangeshkar were two of Nadaan's most popular songs. Chic Chocolate was a part of C. Ramchandra's team. Two of Ramachandra's most popular Bollywood songs are Gore Gore O Banke Chore from Samadhi and Shola Jo Bhadke from Albela. Chic Chocolate is to be credited for these songs. Lata Mangeshkar sang the song Koi Dard Hamara Kya Samjhe in the 1952 film Rangili, on which they collaborated. He is remembered today for his collaboration with Madan Mohan and his work with Naasir in the 1956 film Kar Bhala. Chic worked as the film's assistant music director. The movie Albela featured him in a song sequence with his band dressed in frilly Latin-inspired costumes and a cameo appearance. Chic wore the costumes from the film for his subsequent live performances. Chic and his family, including his wife Martha and their children, lived in a Colaba apartment until he died in May 1967, at 51. Chetan Anand's Aakhri Khat was released shortly after. Several shots in the movie showed Chic Chocolate playing his trumpet from the bandstand during the blues song Rut Jawan. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nallamadras/support

Lata Mangeshkar is as relevant in this age of mobile apps, as she was seven decades ago in the era of gramophones. Her voice not just spins magic, but the money too. It has been dominating the Indian music economy for decades now. Take a peek into another aspect of the veteran singer's magical voice -- the business side of it.  After the legendary singer, let us move on to India's top business schools. The latest survey conducted by Business Standard cuts the clutter and lists the best business schools of the country for you A recent news report claimed that most management schools across the country were able place all the students within hours of the placement season taking off. After the pandemic, most companies are on a hiring spree. But for them, the picture didn't look as good on Dalal Street. Benchmark indices have turned negative for the year with Monday's 1.7% slide in the markets. Analysts fear a double digit fall in benchmark indices is possible as markets are not fully pricing global headwinds. Budget euphoria may well be waning away on Dalal Street, but some of its announcements are still fresh in people's imaginations. Virtual digital assets are one of them. Find out about it and more in this episode of the podcast. Watch video

Barring just one instance, she never endorsed a brand in her lifetime. But her death united all the brand leaders in grief. Her volley of work not just gave them momentary escape from the everyday hassle, but also offered lessons in creation and brand building. Leading industrialist Anand Mahindra tweeted: “What can you say when you no longer have your voice...? Om Shanti.” While Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani said, “The voice, the charm, the melodies will live on for generations to come.” Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, the executive chairperson of biotechnology major Biocon, said, “Lata Mangeshkar will eternally cast her large shadow over us n remind us of he us of her eternal legend.”  Her voice will indeed eternally cast a large shadow over this subcontinent's music.  Despite her massive celebrity status, which stretched across decades and beyond India's borders, Lata Mangeshkar, unlike most other celebrities, shied away from endorsing day-to-day brands.  There is no consolidated figure on what her songs earned. However, there a mountain of evidence on how much her voice drove the Rs 1,800-crore Indian music business, which is now dominated by streaming. More than 192 million Indians tune in to some streaming app or the other every month. India's oldest music label, Saregama is home to 130,000-plus songs. Every time any of these is played on streaming apps - YouTube, Spotify, Gaana-- used by short video apps (Moj, Josh) or on TV (ads, shows), Saregama gets paid. In the financial year 2020-21, the company earned Rs 284-crore, or three-fourths of its revenue, from such licensing of songs by Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar et al. Songs from Saregama's catalogue were streamed 85 billion times in the last financial year. “Lata Mangeshkar was the tallest singer we had,” managing director of Saregama, Vikram Mehra said. Mangeshkar's songs were streamed 6.7 billion times on her YouTube channel in the last 12 months. This figure can shock even the star influencers. The top songs on it are “Didi Tera Dewar Deewana” (Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, 1994), “Yeh Galiyan Yeh Chaubara” (“Prem Rog”, 1982), and “Ho Gaya Hai Tujhko To Pyaar Sajna” (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge, 1995). She has remained on the YouTube list of top 10 Indian artists along with many of her younger colleagues such as Alka Yagnik or Arijit Singh. And she has been at number 11 on the top global artists chart, for over 294 weeks now. Mangeshkar's songs or videos are streamed millions of times from a variety of other platforms -- Shemaroo, Saregama, Spotify, Gaana, to name a few. In 2013, Mangeshkar endorsed a brand, breaking her lifetime resolve. She appeared in an ad for cough syrup Glycodin. The others who come in from the cold included Bismillah Khan and Bhimsen Joshi. When asked why Glycodin, she replied, I can afford anything except a sore throat!” Watch video

A version of this essay has been published by swarajayamag.com at https://swarajyamag.com/culture/the-argument-about-a-british-hymn-at-beating-the-retreat-well-heres-an-alternativeI personally have had no idea what ‘Beating the Retreat’ is all about, so I was startled when a full-scale war of words erupted because the Government of India apparently decided to replace a British-era song called ‘Abide with me’ with a Lata Mangeshkar song named ‘Ae mere watan ke logon’ as part of the ceremony. Thanks for reading Shadow Warrior! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.Upon reading the now-famous ‘Abide with me’, which I had never heard of, and looking it up on the Internet, I found out it is a Christian hymn, written by some unknown British padre in the 1850s. Insofar as its literary quality goes, it is not bad, and appears to be a plea for having the Christian God stand with the beseecher as he goes through his times of trouble. It is clearly directed to the Christian God because it includes verses about the cross. It is not entirely clear why removing this uni-denominational prayer is a blow to tradition, such as it is. That too a colonial tradition imposed on a prone India in the 1900s. Thank you for reading Shadow Warrior. This post is public so feel free to share it.On the other hand, I have read that Nehru himself cried when listening to ‘Ae mere watan ke logon’ in the aftermath of the 1962 debacle. I have my doubts about that song’s appeal because of its over-reliance on words of Farsi and Arabic origin, which sound alien to my southern ears. When I first heard it, I confused the word ‘watan’ (Arabic for country) with ‘vadan(am)’ (Sanskrit for face), but of course it didn’t make any sense. Interestingly, I found out on twitter that ‘Abide with me’ was Gandhi’s favorite hymn! This was on the authority of Shashi Tharoor, Congress MP, on January 26th. He didn’t elaborate as to how it is known that it was Gandhi’s favorite hymn, which I had been earlier led to believe was ‘Vaishnava Janato’.  Going one step further, another Congress MP, P Chidambaram, let on that it was also Subhas Bose’s favorite hymn. How did he know that? Why, Bose’s grand-nephew Sugata Bose told him. Sugata Bose is a professor at Harvard University; it is probably not necessary to remind people, as per Wikipedia, that “Harvard College was founded in 1636 as a Puritan/Congregationalist institution and trained ministers for many years.”I guess that would have been clinching evidence for the importance of ‘Abide with me’, except for a small detail: Sugata was born in 1956, 11 years after Netaji disappeared in 1945. So how on earth did he witness the “tears flowing down Netaji’s cheeks”? So it is just a second-hand tale of dubious authenticity?Remarkable that this obscure prayer was the favorite of not only Gandhi, but also Netaji! And I don’t know about you, but all these tears from the stalwarts of the freedom movement are beginning to make me feel a little queasy. In other words, all this sounds like a red herring, if not proper fake news manufactured on the spot. The real issue is that the Congress is upset that Narendra Modi has recognized the enduring affection that average Indians have for Bose. Congress’ diligent attempts to obscure Bose’s contribution, along with that of other stalwarts like Patel, worked for a long time, but as they say, you can fool all the people some of the time, but not all of the time. Personally, I used to hero-worship Bose, and even attempted to read the monumental Brothers Against the Raj, but later I found that he had certain blind spots about leftism for example, and he had rather absurd ideas about abandoning Indian scripts for Roman, so I now have a more nuanced view. But he clearly deserves, as the head of the Indian National Army, the signal honor of a commanding statue at the India Gate. And in case the nation is in the market for a purely non-sectarian hymn that deserves to be accepted as a national prayer, I have one in mind. It is the Daiva-dasakam or Ten Couplets to the Almighty by Sri Narayana Guru. Here’s my translation from the Malayalam original:O Almighty, watch over us Without abandon Thou art our Captain In the mighty ship of Life On the sea of Existence. Counting one by one And when all Essences are counted The seeing Eye alone is left Let that inner Self thus rest in Thee. Thou alone art our Lord Thou Who without fail Bless us with food and clothes and everything else. As the ocean holds deeps, waves, and storms, Let us hold within ourselves the Manifest World, Thy Glory and Thou. Thou art the Act of Creation, the Creator And the innumerable creatures Thou hast created. O Almighty, Thou art also the very material of Creation. Thou art the Material World, Its Creator, and its Enjoyer too, And the Noble One that grants Salvation by lifting Illusion. Thou art Truth, Knowledge and Bliss, The Present, the Past and the Future too are None else. Verily art Thou the Spoken Word, too. Thy Self, in Glory ensconced Both inside and outside us We forever worship O Almighty, Thy Will be done. Victory to Thee, Grand One, Refuge of the weak. Victory to Thee, Abode of Joy, Ocean of Mercy, Hail. Into that profound sea of Thy Glory Let us all plunge, And flourish forever Flourish in Happiness Flourish. This is a public episode.
