Saxophonist / composer Wayne Shorter (born August 25, 1933) has cast an oversized shadow on jazz since he joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in 1959. Soon becoming the primary composer for that group, and upon joining Miles Davis' second great quintet in 1964, he soon filled that role with Miles as well. In 1970, he co-founded the jazz fusion group Weather Report with Joe Zawinul and in the course of his long career he recorded twenty recordings under his own leadership, becoming one of the most original and prolific jazz composers of all time.
In the final installment of Sara J's conversation with jazz saxophonist Dan Wallace, the focus shifts to his band, The 11th Hour, and their phenomenal cover of Tool's "Sober." Dan also shares his aspirations for a live album and the story of his friendship with musician Marc Shapiro, who was the catalyst for Dan's guest spot here on the show.Dan shares his experiences in the Baltimore music scene, his college days in New Orleans, and gives props to the artists who influenced the musicians we love. He also explains why he believes Steely Dan stands the test of time (and would probably survive the apocalypse). Dan talks about his future plans, including an upcoming jazz album, before switching things up to embark on something new.And you won't want to miss the incredible story of how he may or may not have convinced Jeff Coffin to take the gig with The Dave Matthews Band full-time back in the summer of 2008.More from this week's guest:Sober (Tool) Dan Wallace and the 11th Hour: https://youtu.be/dH8GQyNB3Zc?si=RCG0J9EyPkxh_Lzc"Terms and Conditions" by Dan Wallace and the 11th Hour: https://youtu.be/gJeGfIIvPK8?si=4W8g1HVGPTiyPKqEDan Wallace and the 11th Hour, a playlist on SoundCloud: https://on.soundcloud.com/hSxKIkPHDHIZYXJXLXDonate to DATC Media Company: https://datcmediacompany.com/supportGive the gift of Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Datcmediacompany/giftThe DATC Media Podcast Family: https://datcmediacompany.com/podcastsWant to be a guest on the show? https://datcmediacompany.com/contact/ola/services/be-a-guest-on-dropped-among-this-crowd-podcastWant to be a RoughGauge featured artist? A supreme honor & privilege to welcome scintillating saxophonist/composer NUBYA GARCIA to Episode 086. At the dawn of her first US headlining tour, the UK-based sorceress was kind enough to tap in for a deep, insightful chat on a smattering of salient topics with numerous delightful detours. Your humble narrator has been paying rather close attention to this dynamic, shape-shifting artist since she unveiled 2020 debut full-length LP SOURCE. In 2024, Garcia blasted back with the otherworldly sophomore sensation ODYSSEY, a multi-hued document that delivers different shades than its prodigous predecessor. For just under an hour, Nubya Garcia unspools the passions and pathways that manifested this magnificent new record. Exploring the vision, compositions, and inspirations that made ODYSSEY spring to vibrant life, plus the exhilarating experience of conducting a chamber orchestra for the first time - while recording in a church no less! Nubya discusses her foray into spoken word, recalling a humorous story tracking vocals in Brazil. She later revisits the genetic codes, cross-pollinations and hybrid strains native to the majestic SOURCE. We explore the symbiosis between club culture and her sound art; Ms. Garcia reflects on the impact of NPR's Tiny Desk Concert appearance(s), her lengthy relationships and crucial collaborations with a loyal cadre of co-conspirators including Joe Armon-Jones, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Mala, DJ Harrison (Butcher Brown), and beyond. 2:30 - Ep.086 preview 5:45 - Sponsor: Just Schwandering NOLA JazzFest 8:20 - Sponsor: CORNFLOWER Ka-BLOOM! Is it jazz? Sure, the London-born saxophonist, composer and bandleader grew up studying the genre under the noted pianist Nikki Yeoh at Camden Music. But it isn't until you listen to albums like 2020's Source and 2024's Odyssey that you hear broader creativity shining through: It's jazz, classical, dub, R&B and whatever else Garcia wants to convey. It all comes from a place of exploration and self-study, of wanting to do all the things across all disciplines while ignoring arbitrary boxes that don't fit. Garcia's sophomore album Odyssey released via Concord Jazz. A majestic feat on which she blends orchestral arrangements with R&B, jazz, broken beat and dub, resulting in a grand, nuanced record that feels airy and celestial without sacrificing the groove. It's a deeply personal offering about her trek to falling back in love with musical composition over the past four years." Big Thanks to Mick & the Nubya team for making this conversation possible! Among the well-known performers he has been honored to perform with are Grammy Award-winning trombonist Troy Andrews, often known as "Trombone Shorty," and 12-time Grammy Award-winning artist, songwriter, and composer Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds. Despite measuring under a pound, 8 ounces at birth, Avery has surmounted several health obstacles. He has shown himself to be quite resilient and has refused to let his health problems define who he is. Unfortunately, because of his distinctive voice, which set him apart from his friends, he became the target of bullying. Mr. Dixon claims that the bullying was so bad that he once "considered suicide." Avery nevertheless urges anyone who feels depressed or upset to seek therapy. He has also proven his bullies wrong by receiving numerous accolades for his efforts, including a letter of gratitude from former President Obama. Let's welcome my new friend and talented saxophonist, Avery Dixon, to Autism Rocks And Rolls. https://www.averydixon.com/

Saxophonist and jazz composer Benny Golson (born January 25, 1929) was one of jazz's senior statesmen, passing away last year at the age of 95. He was one of the last surviving subjects of the well known photograph “A Great Day in Harlem”, which was featured in the film “The Terminal” (2004) which also featured a cameo by Golson himself. He penned a number of compositions which have become well loved jazz standards.

This week on Jazz After Dinner, Joe features Saxophonist Paul Desmond from his 1959 Gambit Records recording “First Place Again."
Tonight's Jazz Feature is one of the most individual and passionate voices of the alto saxophone William "Sonny" Criss. The album is his second for Prestige Records called "Portrait of Sonny Criss". He recorded for Prestige from 1966 to 1969 and these albums remain his best known. Sonny here is accompanied by the great under rated Walter Davis Jr. on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Alan Dawson on drums and was done on March 23, 1967 at Rudy Van Gelder's Studio. The album mixes standard tunes and a couple of Jazz favorites but each track demonstrates Sonny's passionate sound and intensity. A musical portrait indeed of an unsung great: Sonny Criss.
