"Thank you, India", já cantou Alanis Morrissette.

Meeta is a Senior Manager and Specialist Pharmacist in Theatres, Critical Care and Pain Management at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH). A role she is thoroughly passionate about and one that resonates with her personally due to a trauma she experienced at the start of her career as a pharmacist. She shares a very personal story of an injury that led to debilitating pain, lack of movement, and a huge setback in career progression. What is so wonderful and powerful about this story is Meeta's determination to improve her quality of life and return to her previous way of living. What she doesn't realise at the time is how this journey enables her to shift her career pathway as a pharmacist and open her mindset to alternative therapies AND developing a role as an entrepreneur! Meeta walks us through her healing journey and how she had to look outside of traditional medicine and try alternative therapies. She utlises several forms of therapy but she felt a strong connection to Reiki and decided to become a Reiki master. This then leads to the development of Infinity Aromatiqs and creating natural and homemade products such as candles, roll on oils and wax melts. Tom and Meeta review the critical aspects of sleep including:the need for sleep, its impact on mental and physical performance, dementia, andthe value of naps.Key messages about the incredible power of sleep:Quality sleep promotes clearance of harmful toxins that build up through the day, reducing the risk for dementia. We can best cope with stressors when our bodies are well rested. Sleep is a reset button to help us face the stressors of the following day.You need 7-9 hours of sleep to function well.Naps can help meet the number of hours of sleep you need but it is not advisable too close to bedtime. When sleep deprived, caffeine can help with alertness and making decisions faster, but the quality of decisions may not improve (i.e., we may simply “make bad decisions faster”).You are less effective in general if you are sleep deprived.Less than 6 hours are likely to result in deficits in behavior.

Currently, she is the founder and editor of The Hard Copy, an excellent publication on branding and design which I write for, and through which I have gotten to know her well. But before that, she made a name for herself as a partner at Ray & Keshavan, India's once-premier design agency, before it was sold to advertising conglomerate WPP in 2013. From then, Meeta has been a serial investor, entrepreneur and mentor. I've had some excellent conversations in the last two years with Meeta thanks to the work I've done for her publication, and I count myself fortunate to be able to do so, benefiting from her wisdom and experience. Today, Meeta discusses how and why sleep is such an important tool for high level performance, and that improving the one-third of our life that we spend asleep really can give us the extra percentage points over competitors. We also discuss the specific roadblocks athletes come up against in terms of sleep, such as early morning training times, competing in different time zones and the sheer pressure and stress they are under. Lastly, although it is obvious to a lot of us the importance of physical recovery and sleep, Meeta lays down why sleep is crucial for athletes learning new techniques or even its ability to create the correct winners mindset. www.meetasinghmd.com

In this episode, we're re-visiting the unprecedented impact of social distancing on the arts, with a specific focus on opera. Our very special guest is one of the UK's leading sopranos, whose credits include major roles at the Welsh National Opera, Glyndebourne, the Royal Opera House and Opera North - Meeta Raval. In her 20s, Meeta was the inaugural prize-winner of the Basil Turner Prize for her work with British Youth Opera, later going on to receive the first Royal Academy of Music's Pavarotti Prize. She was also the recipient of the Independent Opera Award and was awarded The Sybill Tutton Opera Award by the Musician's Benevolent Fund. In 2012, Meeta was named Patron of the Wells Cathedral Chorister Trust and her voice has been heard many times on BBC 2 and Radio 3 in recent years. Richard spoke to Meeta in August 2020, about the limbo that many artists find themselves in with the global lockdown easing but with theatres still closed. They talk about the future of opera and whether this is an opportunity to do things differently - particularly the way performers and technical staffing the UK arts sector have the most complex and misunderstood payment systems that have left them more exposed than most at this time. --- Useful links: Meeta's Royal Opera House profile - http://www.roh.org.uk/people/meeta-raval Meeta on Twitter - https://twitter.com/meetarology Daily Telegraph: New Faces - https://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/music/opera/9694409/Meeta-Raval-New-Faces.html --- We'll be debating the issues raised at www.thepossibilityclub.org, a free network of professionals with something to say and ideas to test - and we really want to know what you think. “Peak performance really is an output of a well rested brain and body.” Dr. Meeta Singh joins us to discuss the role and nuances of sleep in athletic performance in this weeks edition of The Podcast. After a brief intro, Dr. Singh breaks down exactly what sleep is by definition, and how we can quantify it to help our athletes with it. This includes the role of naps, how athlete’s can utilize them to improve performance, and some negative impacts they can have. She then runs down the rabbit hole of a student’s social life and some “party favors” and how they can inhibit sleep and decrease it’s potency. This leads her down the road of sleep monitors, how effective they are (or aren’t) and what a lack of sleep can do to performance.
