Season 1, Episode 11 Guest: Dr. Meeta SinghIn this episode we explore the science and the incredible power of sleep with international authority, Dr. Meeta Singh. Dr. Singh is also a performance consultant for professional sports including Major League Baseball, National Basketball Association, Pro Football Hall of Fame and many others. Tom and Meeta review the critical aspects of sleep including:the need for sleep, its impact on mental and physical performance, dementia, andthe value of naps.Key messages about the incredible power of sleep:Quality sleep promotes clearance of harmful toxins that build up through the day, reducing the risk for dementia. We can best cope with stressors when our bodies are well rested. Sleep is a reset button to help us face the stressors of the following day.You need 7-9 hours of sleep to function well.Naps can help meet the number of hours of sleep you need but it is not advisable too close to bedtime. When sleep deprived, caffeine can help with alertness and making decisions faster, but the quality of decisions may not improve (i.e., we may simply “make bad decisions faster”).You are less effective in general if you are sleep deprived.Less than 6 hours are likely to result in deficits in behavior.

Sleep is the rockstar of recovery, and in an ideal world, it would occupy about 1/3 of our life. But thus far I've only recorded 2 podcasts on the subject. It's time to put that right with today's guest, Dr. Meeta Singh. Dr. Singh is a board registered physician and psychiatrist with a specialty in the applied science of sleep. She spends a lot of her time working with C-suite executives and elite athletes. Regardless of the individual, however, the benefits of sleep are huge and overlooked (how many times do I say that each week?). I think you'll appreciate the articulate way in which Dr. Singh outlines these benefits and I'm confident that by the end of this podcast you'll be looking for more ways to improve the quantity and/or quality of your sleep each night. Topics covered include: The stages of sleep and why each plays an important role Your short and long-term health and the impact of sleep (TIP: pay attention to the part about COVID) Your daily routine and how to change it to get better sleep Caffeine and why even if you can drink coffee late in the evening and fall asleep, it still affects your ability to get deep sleep Waking up in the middle of the night and why it's entirely normal Are sleep trackers accurate, valid, and worth the money? Advice for shift workers To find out more about Dr. Singh you can find her in the following places: Website Facebook LinkedIn Instagram Twitter @meetasinghmd We also talked about these topics: Sleep deprivation and ethics Whoop podcast - Impact of stress on sleep performance and executive functioning If you are interested in a Whoop sleep tracker then please click on this LINK to get 1 month FREE Take a 30 day trial in my SWAT Inner Circle for just £1. Watch Gwalior Gharana vocalist Dr. Meeta Pandit's exclusive interview only on Raaggiri. Meeta began training with her grandfather Padma Bhushan Pt. Krishnarao Shankar Pandit and her father Pt. L.K Pandit at the age of 3. Growing up in a house where music ustads and her father's disciples visited day in and day out, and all conversations centered around music, she was exposed to the finer aspects of music from a very young age. She is the sixth in the unbroken lineage and the first woman in the family to have taken up music as a profession.
In this episode, I speak to Meeta Malhotra, someone who dons many hats. Currently, she is the founder and editor of The Hard Copy, an excellent publication on branding and design which I write for, and through which I have gotten to know her well. But before that, she made a name for herself as a partner at Ray & Keshavan, India's once-premier design agency, before it was sold to advertising conglomerate WPP in 2013. From then, Meeta has been a serial investor, entrepreneur and mentor. I've had some excellent conversations in the last two years with Meeta thanks to the work I've done for her publication, and I count myself fortunate to be able to do so, benefiting from her wisdom and experience. I was very keen to have her on this show not only to get her insights but also to talk about something apart from what we always end up talking about! In this interview, we speak about:How if fundamentals are in place, everything else works out.How to charge a premium beyond having technical skills. How to not be scared of making mistakesOn the two methods of reading - the rabbithole and the hurdle raceBuilding the ability to zoom out and looking at the larger pictureThe power of compounding and how to go about “networking”… And what IS a network, in the first place? Two things that you need to survive over the next few years - adaptability and resilienceEverything Meeta Malhotra:Her Twitter: https://www.instagram.com/meeta_malhotraThe Hard Copy, which she edits: https://meetamalhotra.com/A talk she did in March 2020 on awareness: https://www.amazon.in/dp/B08CGSJT44The article on The Hard Copy on virtual concerts: https://thehardcopy.co/the-future-of-live-entertainment/Getting Meta links:Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/40Vo30aQilVrxEOkoSmDjx?si=pCOPeJlcR0uN_g2ZZs8iLQ&dl_branch=1Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/getting-meta/id1573882113Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9zdGF0aWMuYWRvcmlsYWJzLmNvbS9mZWVkL2dldHRpbmctbWV0YS54bWwIVM website: https://shows.ivmpodcasts.com/show/getting-meta-y2rb-RtSzWNdzZ8i99R2QFollow your host on:Twitter: twitter.com/chuck_gopalInstagram: instagram.com/chuckofalltradesEmail: chuck@chuckofalltrades.in
