Some drainage doubters have legitimate concerns about whether or not drainage would worsen the effects of drought conditions in fields where soil moisture is significantly lacking. Dr. Vinayak Shedekar of the Ohio State University agrees that drainage could potentially worsen field conditions in areas experiencing significant drought – like the one experienced by Ohio in the summer of 2024, when more than 20 counties were declared to be on a D4 drought condition, some even into November, resulting in a significant decrease in yield for grain crops across the interstate. But Shedekar points out that, at least in Ohio's case, drainage still helped overall. Fields with drainage systems had the advantage of a better planting season, due to a wet spring. Even as drought conditions worsens, Shedekar says arguments that drainage systems significantly worsen field conditions don't – no pun in tended – hold water. This podcast is sponsored by Timewell.

In episode 184 of our SAP on Azure video podcast we talk again about Single Sign-On. For a VERY long time when I was working at SAP, I was working alongside a very special colleague and friend, Vinayak Adkoli. He was my partner in crime for a lot of projects. In the last projects we worked together on SAP API Management and simplifying the way how customers could manage SAP APIs. Then I moved to Microsoft, Vinayak moved from India to the US and today I have the pleasure of welcoming him in our podcast. Last week we already had an amazing episode with Martin Raepple from Microsoft and Christian Cohrs from SAP about Single Sign-On and Multifactor authentications in the context of SAP GUI and today we want to focus on API based authentications. Similar like with the SAP GUI this is one of the most talked about scenarios and I am glad that Vinayak can provide us with more insights on how this is working. In 1856, the East India Company imposed the Hindu Widow Remarriage Act, allowing widows to remarry after their husband's death. The Act was controversial at the time: Hindu traditionalists, particularly in higher castes, prevented widows from remarrying to protect the family's honor, and even teenage and child widows were expected to live lives of austerity. The following year, the Marathi author Baba Padmanji publishes Yamuna's Journey: one of the first, if not the first, novel in an Indian language. The novel, recently translated by Deepra Dandekar and published by Speaking Tiger Books, follows the story of Yamuna, an educated Marathi woman (and secret Christian), and her husband Vinayak as they travel the region, encountering tragic tales of Hindu widows prevented from remarrying. Deepra Dandekar is a researcher at the Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient, Berlin. She is the author of Baba Padmanji: Vernacular Christianity in Colonial India, the first critical biography of Baba Padmanji in English. We're joined today by Mariyam Haider, researcher-writer and spoken word artist in Singapore. Hindutva and Violence: V. D. Savarkar and the Essentials of History (SUNY Press, 2022) explores the place of history in the political thought of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar (1883-1966), the most controversial Indian political thinker of the twentieth century and a key architect of Hindu nationalism. Examining his central claim that Hindutva is not a word but a history, the book argues that, for Savarkar, this history was not a total history, a complete history, or a narrative history. Rather, its purpose was to trace key historical events to a powerful source--the font of motivation for chief actors of the past who had turned to violence in a permanent war for Hindutva as the founding principle of a Hindu nation. At the center of Savarkar's writings are historical characters who not only participated in ethical warfare against invaders, imperialists, and conquerors in India, but also became Hindus in acts of violence. He argues that the discipline of history provides the only method for interpreting Hindutva. The book also shows how Savarkar developed his conceptualization of history as a way into the meaning of Hindutva. Savarkar wrote extensively, from analyses of the nineteenth century to studies of antiquity, to draw up his histories of Hindus. He also turned to a wide range of works, from the epic tradition to contemporary social theory and world history, as his way of explicating Hindutva and history. By examining Savarkar's key writings on history, historical methodology, and historiography, Vinayak Chaturvedi provides an interpretation of the philosophical underpinnings of Hindutva. Savarkar's interpretation of Hindutva, he demonstrates, requires above all grappling with his idea of history.
