Today's guest is the Associate Professor of Voice and Theatre, Coordinator of Musical Theatre Voice Training and Artistic Director of the CCM Vocal Pedagogy Institute of the Shenandoah Conservatory. He has written articles for the Journal of Singing and has contributed to The Manual of Singing Voice Rehabilitation by Leda Scearce and the So You Want to Sing series by NATS. Dr Matthew Edwards is on the podcast to talk about teaching musical theatre styles. KEY TAKEAWAYS Matt plays several instruments and understands enough so that when something's going wrong with the voice, he knows what to do to fix it. It's reasonable that singers should be able to do the same thing. At a very basic level, singers should understand that their voice has a power source, the respiratory system, and have some knowledge of how it works. When you breathe in and fill your lungs with air, that air wants to get back out. So the more air you take in, the more air that wants to get out, and that'll make you louder. The less air you take in, the less air that's going to come out, so you'll be a little bit quieter. Think about the vocal folds – that's where the buzz happens. So if you want breathy singing, you need lightly closed vocal folds. If you want to have more edge to the sound, then you're going to have to close those vocal folds up a little bit for a belt or for an overdrive. Singers need to know enough about their voice to keep it functioning, but they don't have to know enough to be able to tune it on their own. In the early days of musical theatre singers were not amplified and so had to project their voices to the back of the theatre. A lot of that classical technique work was beneficial because classical singers were projecting their voices acoustically as well. In the early days of the Golden Age of musicals, singers needed to think about having enough air in their lungs to project their voice and then use it accordingly. When you get into microphone singing and amplified singing, you're no longer trying to project your voice far away from you. You're trying to project it just centimetres away from you. BEST MOMENTS ‘It doesn't have to be in depth about understanding every muscle name, but just that basic biomechanics of how the respiratory system works' ‘So to me, it's about getting them to understand the basics so they can troubleshoot on their own' ‘Donors change as the economy changes' EPISODE RESOURCES Guest Website: EdwardsVoice.com Social Media: Instagram: @edwards_voice Relevant Links & Mentions: How The Voice Works Course: https://www.how-the-voice-works.com/enroll-now Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep. 84 The Benefits of Cross-Genre Training with The Voice Collective: https://open.spotify.com/episode/50yCDCVVxrgJp9NiQQFqKu?si=6a8a946adf8b4709 pickerwheel.com Thomas Cleveland at the Vanderbilt University Medical Centre: https://www.vumc.org/ent/person/thomas-f-cleveland-mm-phd Respiratory Function in Singing: A Primer for Singers and Singing Teachers by Thomas J Hixon Respiratory Function in Speech and Song by Thomas J Hixon Breathing for Singers: A Comparative Analysis of Body Types and Breathing Tendencies by Jennifer Cowgill: https://www.thefreelibrary.com/Breathing+for+singers%3A+a+comparative+analysis+of+body+types+and…-a0221850658 Journal of Singing: https://www.nats.org/cgi/page.cgi/about_journal_singing.html Etude Magazine Cinderella (original): https://youtu.be/a0iOeAHeCA8 Cinderella (revival): https://youtu.be/rVY3nV21Ixs National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATs): org Vocal Authority: Singing Style and Ideology by John Potter Ken Bozeman: kenbozeman.com Acting in Musical Theatre: A Comprehensive Course by Joe Deer & Rocco Dal Vera Cross-Training in the Voice Studio: A Balancing Act by Norman Spivey & Mary Saunders-Barton So You Want to Sing CCM (NATs Series) edited by Matthew Hoch Training Contemporary Commercial Singers by Elizabeth Ann Benson Highbrow-lowbrow: Emergence of Cultural Hierarchy in America - The William E Massey Sr. Lectures in American Studies The Rise and Fall of the Broadway Musical by Mark Grant The Theatre Will Rock by Elizabeth Lara Wollman ABOUT THE GUEST Matt Edwards is currently Associate Professor of Voice and Theatre, Coordinator of Musical Theatre Voice Training, and Artistic Director of the CCM Vocal Pedagogy Institute at Shenandoah Conservatory.

What would it feel like for a singer to almost die for real and then die metaphorically when told that they might never be able to sing again? Watch Pandit Harish Tiwari exclusive interview part 01. Pandit Harish Tiwari is an eminent Hindustani Classical Singer of Kirana Gharana. Kirana gharana is one of the Indian classical khyal gharanas, and is concerned foremost with perfect intonation of notes (swara). The central concern of the Kirana style is swara, or individual notes, in particular precise tuning and expression of notes. In the Kirana Gayaki (singing style), the individual notes (swaras) of the raga are not just random points in the scale, but independent realms of music capable of horizontal expansion. Emotional pukars in the higher octaves form a part of the musical experience. Another unique feature of this gharana is the intricate and ornate use of the sargam taan (weaving patterns with the notations themselves) introduced by Abdul Karim Khan under influence from the Carnatic classical style. He is most efficient disciple of Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/raag-giri/message

If someone would ask me to describe this episode, I would say two words - beauty of thought and gratefulness. On the last day of 2021, I am sharing this spiritual, but also very down to earth conversation with soprano from Barcelona Serena Sáenz. Serena is among those remarkable people who I have been lucky to meet while living and studying in Barcelona. Little did we know that in 5 years since then, Serena will be singing with the world famous conductors including Daniel Barenboim and that during her first season as a member of the Staatsoper Berlin International Opera Studio, Serena will be asked to jump in as Pamina for the opening night of Yuval Sharon's production of Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute). I am so thrilled to be able to bring you this conversation which, I believe, is the best fit to positively end this year and gracefully start the new year. This episode is dedicated to all those taking a stand in the #menopauserevolution Joanne Bozeman introduces herself to us: “I grew up in a musical home with lots of singing in our daily life, and great music playing on the stereo. I trained at University as a Classical Singer, and performed a wide range of repertoire in my community and regionally. #amjadalikhan #raaggiri #indianclassicalmusic Indian classical singer Ustad Amjad Ali Khan's exclusive interview's 2nd part on Raaggiri. He is one of the contemporary singers of Kirana Gharana. Amjad Ali Khan assimilated the essence of the meer-khand, vistar or development typical to the gharana. His melodious reverberating voice and his ability to balance the performances with sensitive alap/vistar, complex sargams and an onslaught of lightening fast taans has set him in a class apart. He is one of the rare exponents of Kirana Gharana to be deemed as the torch bearer of the gharana. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/raag-giri/message

While training her own voice, Sarah had to learn to block out the voices of the cynics around her...and in her own head. Many things she learned the hard way, but she wouldn't trade in her struggle. That experience helps inform her choices and give depth to her performances. Find out more about Sarah's mellifluous career here.

In the second half of my conversation with Italian bass Maurizio Muraro, we discuss the text to Don Bartolo's aria "A un dottor della mia sorte" from Il barbiere di Siviglia. This time we concentrate on the rule of "raddoppiamento sintattico" (called phrasal doubling in English), the combination GLI [ʎ], S before a voiced consonant (which becomes a voiced [z]) and when to roll or not roll Rs! You can find a libretto for Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Opernführer. Scroll down to Aria No.8 (remember to make sure it's on L for libretto and I for Italian!). The fabulous website resources that I mentioned in this episode are: Technology for the Classical Singer, a must-have resource for all of us, with blog postings on everything from foreign language dictionaries to the free treatises on singing at IMSLP to where to find accompaniment tracks. She also has amazing video tutorials to teach us all how to get the most out of our technology! SingersBabel, a diction website with video clips that allow you to see the text and IPA transcription while you listen! Focusing on French, German and English repertoire right now, it has a large selection of pieces to choose from, including Bach Cantatas and choral repertoire! And don't forget to have a good chuckle over Bugs Bunny's classic Rabbit of Seville :-) As always, please feel free to contact me with questions, comments or suggestions here, at the Facebook page, on Twitter or directly at ellen@ellenrissinger.com
Singer Richard Conrad is interviewed, and he reflects back on a career that got a big boost early on from opera superstar Joan Sutherland and her husband Richard Bonynge when they asked him to record The Age of Bel Canto with them and Marilyn Horne in 1963. During our discussion he'll talk about those days, and about Gilbert & Sullivan, Noel Coward and many other notables in the music world. Richard also tells us a joke he told to Noel Coward that made Coward fall down laughing, and he tells about a hilarious men's room encounter with none other than…Adlai Stevenson! I ask you, where else can you get this kind of programming? At the close of the episode, Andy reminds listeners to enter the drawing for a free iPod by calling 415-508-4084 and saying the secret word (found at 18 min., 20 sec. into Episode 12). My dearest apologies to my listeners for the technical difficulties in the beginning of this interview. You find that these "real" moments actually add to the fun nature of this live conversation! Opera Diva, Angela M. Brown drops in on Patrick D. McCoy, The African-American Voice in Classical Music about her exciting career interest in the area of opera, including her program "Opera from a Sista's Point of View," he recent wedding in Paris and her future career goals. Angela Brown personifies the ideal American dramatic soprano: sheer vocal power; luxurious finesse; shimmering, high pianissimos; and a charming personality larger than life. Her highly successful Metropolitan Opera debut in 2004 sparked a media excitement with reviews from The New York Times: "At last an Aida," the Associated Press: "she combines a potent, dusky lower register with a striking ability to spin out soft high notes of shimmering beauty. There's no doubt her voice is powerful enough for Verdi," CBS Evening News: "the future of opera has arrived," and features on the front page of The New York Times and in Oprah Magazine, Essence Magazine, Ebony Magazine, Classical Singer, Reader's Digest, and Psychology Today. In fall 2009, Angela received the Governor's Arts Award from the Governor of Indiana, a Spirit of the Prairie Award from Conner Prairie in Indiana, and was inducted into the Indianapolis Public Schools Hall of Fame. Miss Brown is a trailblazer on a mission to bring operatic and classical vocal performance to a diverse audience. Her witty and inspired recital program titled "Opera from a Sistah's Point of View" dispels the myths of opera through lively commentary on opera plots and characters, show-stopping arias, poignant art songs and moving spirituals.
