“Latter-day Saints believe in the pursuit of truth through ‘study and faith' and are thus not opposed to intellectual examination of scripture” (Dr. David R. Seely). One way we might examine the scriptures is through the use of biblical criticism, or historical criticism, an approach regularly used by biblical scholars to assess the meaning of a text—it's original context, audience, and authorship. In this episode Dr. Jason Combs, associate professor of ancient scripture, discussed his chapter “Historical Criticism of the Bible among the Latter-day Saints.” He outlines the history of biblical criticism and explains how it may serve as a tool to aid our scripture study. Further, Dr. Combs details how such approaches may provide a more well-rounded vision of the scriptures, especially in studying the Old and New Testaments and comparing multiple accounts of the same events. In doing so we should balance biblical criticism with the application of scriptures and the gospel to our daily lives.     Publications  Jason Robert Combs, “Historical Criticism of the Bible among the Latter-day Saints” (in The Bible and the Latter-day Saint Tradition, eds. When Should You Interpret the Bible Literally or as an Allegory? (Special Podcast Highlight)

The Patrick Madrid Show

This podcast episode of The Patrick Madrid Show revolves around a caller, Dave from Wisconsin, seeking clarity on interpreting biblical miracles as literal events or allegories. Dave mentions examples such as the multiplication of loaves, Jesus walking on water, and the Israelites crossing the Red Sea. He recounts a conversation with a priest who proposed a non-literal interpretation for these events, attributing them to metaphors or natural occurrences.   Patrick Madrid responds by contextualizing this viewpoint within the historical criticism movement prevalent in seminaries during the 1970s. He criticizes this approach, labeling it a "hermeneutic of suspicion," which undermines the literal interpretation of miracles in Scripture. Patrick argues for the authenticity of biblical miracles, because he has seen so many people lose their faith over their failure to truly believe.   He recommends resources like "Politicizing the Bible: The Roots of Historical Criticism and the Secularization of Scripture" by Dr. Scott Hahn and Benjamin Wiker, as well as "Catholic Apologetics Today" by Fr. William Most to delve deeper into this topic.    You can hear the intensity in Patrick's voice as he urges you to guard against erroneous interpretations that diminish the reality of biblical miracles, emphasizing the importance of upholding the Church's teaching on the inerrancy of Scripture.   Someone else' faith could be on the line, and you can help them by sharing the truth in Sacred Scripture and tradition.

Religion primarily works as a form of identity. It is not primarily about theology, practice, sacred texts and holy objects. It is a hero system. It is a community. It is an in-group. It is a way of getting the benefits of rural friendliness in a big cold city. Religion in Secular Society: Fifty Years On, https://lukeford.net/blog/?p=141986 Politicizing the Bible: The Roots of Historical Criticism and the Secularization of Scripture 1300-1700, https://lukeford.net/blog/?p=145115 Academic: Why there is no way back for religion in the West: https://lukeford.net/blog/?p=142143 David Voas says the secular transition is an ongoing generational replacement of religious people by secular people. People don't tend to change vis-a-vis religion. Only a tiny percentage of people who are raised secular become religious. People with no religion have great difficulty in acquiring one. Think about a religion not your own such as Hinduism. Here are some Hindu deities and Hindu worship. For most of you, this seems exotic and scary. This is how most secular young people react to religion. You have to be raised with religion to find it natural. Immigration brings people from more religious countries into secular industrialized nations, but despite this, religion is dramatically in decline in the West. Modernization has effects. Norway is the most modern country and Niger is the least. The most developed countries are the least religious and the least developed countries are the most developed. Religious decline comes relatively late in the process of modernization. Most of the world is religious. Yes, because most of the world is not developed. Prosperity brings choice and a reduced willingness to abide by secular authority. Secular and scientific worldviews displace religious worldviews. Mobility brings people into contact with different cultures and beliefs and reduces the hold of traditional ties. Physical security reduces the need for the solace of spirituality. Religion is a matter of custom and culture. It was the norm at one time. Now secularism is the cultural norm. To the extent that people have contact with religion today it is often in news stories about extremism and abuse. Most Westerners are not rationalists and naturalists, they just have little interest in religion. Religion and the Rise of Historicism: W. M. It is very unlikely that the pope will leave a memorial for Mohammad there. All this is a strong case for a later date.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There's contradictions in multiple historical texts, is this a problem? In this short clip, Zac and I discuss the issue of historical sources being inconsistent. While this is more focused on the resurrection, as the question was raised during a discussion about the resurrection, I felt it was greatly apropos to broader historical questions as well. Tying in knowledge from the Tet Offensive, Punic Wars, and more, when approaching it from a historical lens, note this video is about the historical lens and not the theological lens, it is apparent that a few inconsistencies is not a big problem at all.

What does it mean for Jews to study the New Testament, either academically or as part of their self-understanding as Jews? Was there such a thing as “normative” Judaism at Jesus’ time, over-against which Jesus comes across as an aberration? What’s the difference between saying “Bible,” instead of “Old and New Testaments”—or saying “Hebrew Bible” or “Old Testament” instead of “Tanakh?” Is there any sense to term “Abrahamic religions” as an umbrella for Judaism, Christianity, and Islam? Seth Heringer's Uniting History and Theology (Fortress Press) argues that Christians do not need to use the historical-critical method to make historical claims but should instead write boldly Christian history. By using the historical method, grounded as it is in an incomplete understating of German historicism, they close off investigation of the past from the aesthetic and, importantly, from God. This is why 20th-century Christian scholarship has failed to unite history and theology. Instead of relying on the historical method as the primary way to think about past events, Christians need to reimage what historical work entails. Heringer thus presents a Christian approach to history that dialogues with recent developments in historical theory. The post Seth Heringer – Theology and History first appeared on OnScript.

The third in a sermon series on our church identity, today Exploring Progressive Christian Theology. In Jesus's message on the Good Shepherd, he reminds us that the good shepherd does not leave sheep to the mercy of the wolves. We are challenged to protect all of God's people, God's sheep. But sometimes, when searching for a sheep, we'll find a goat. Progressive Christian Theology is all about incorporating these unexpected, smelly, messy goats and reconciling them with our picture of the kingdom, whether they are historical understandings of the Bible that suggest things didn't always happen the way they are mentioned, whether they are things in our lives that demand discussion in God's context, or whether they are strangers we never expected to need or be needed by. Brevard Childs is known for developing four effects of Historical Criticism on defining the literal sense. For him, the object of biblical exegesis is the text itself with subject matter of which the text speaks. It is significant that the subject matter of the Bible is God and the Holy Spirit must play a central role in defining the literal sense.
