Today, we are thrilled to be joined by a guest whose story is as intriguing as it is inspiring, he's Volodymyr Dehtyarov. Before the world was rattled by the invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Volodymyr was at the helm of Newsfront Communication Agency as its co-founder and CEO. His agency, one of Ukraine's leading consultancies, boasted an impressive roster of over 30 employees and a pool of global industry-leading clients, such as BMW, Takeda, Lenovo, Danone, among others. However, the course of his life dramatically shifted on that fateful day of the invasion. Volodymyr immediately stepped up to serve his country, joining the Territorial Defense Forces. After going through basic training and serving in the Kyiv region, he was deployed to the front lines in the east of Ukraine. After four months of war, in July of last year, Volodymyr was appointed to the Public Affairs Unit of the Command of Territorial Defense Forces in Kyiv. Here, he oversees a wide array of communications projects - from social media management to content production, managing teams of embedded military journalists, assisting with fundraising, building partnerships, and boosting all Command's projects through strategic communications. We delve into his remarkable journey from leading a successful PR agency to serving on the front lines, his insights into the ongoing conflict, and how he's using his communication expertise to inform, connect, and empower in the midst of crisis. Connect with Volodymyr Dehtyarov on LinkedIn. Listen to our previous interview with Ukrainian PR Army member Julia Petryk here. About the book: Sons of a Citizen Soldier is the action-packed tale of a father and two sons negotiating six turbulent months in 1970 as they traverse a changing world. The father, known as Cope, is a stoic World War II pilot and prisoner of war survivor. His eldest son, Elliot, is a conscientious objector, while Elliot's younger brother has volunteered to go to Vietnam. Their tale starts in the mountains of Northern California and spans the Florida Keys, the Bahamas, and beyond as they encounter a colorful cast of villains and heroes and dispatch with each appropriately. Sons of a Citizen Soldier captures the spirit of the times and a constant ethos prevails: good will overcome evil and violence is justified. This ABC Books author of the week was featured on KSGF Mornings with Nick on Thursday, July 15th, 2021.

Lead Vocalist Jake Segura grew up in a small town where his taste in music was not appreciated, so he never pursued songwriting seriously as a teenager. As a college student, he began to struggle with manic depression, anxiety, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. After spending days in bed at a time and flunking out of school, he found himself too afraid to ask for help for fear of the judgement of others. In November of 2015, he attempted suicide. Segura penned the lyrics to Let It Burn on a napkin from his hospital bed, a song that would be released on the band's debut E.P. Caroline. That experience gave him the drive to finally take his pursuit of music seriously with a strong desire to write music that would help combat mental illness stigma and help others struggling to know they are not alone. The band name Citizen Soldier is the band's attempt to personify the battles waged inside and the band's goal to shine a light on the everyday struggles of those who feel overlooked and unappreciated.

Show Notes Episode 264: Citizen Soldier This week Host Dave Bledsoe descends into his bunker for everyone's safety, the bunker being his private bathroom far, far from everyone else. (There is not enough Lysol in the WORLD!) On the show this week we talk about Shitty Caesar wading across the Rubicon wearing rubber ducky floaters. Along the way we go back to the 90's where we discover Dave was not NEARLY the badass he thought he was. (Or is!) Then we bring back an OLD favorite and climb aboard The Wayback Machine to learn why the Founders decided a military dictatorship was a BAD idea! (Also, we take some cheap shots at Bostonians!) We then head over law school to find out why Shroom Dick can't just deploy the troops to “dominate” the protesters that frighten him so much. (BUNKER BITCH!) We visit Kent State to remind you all why soldiers are not cops and never should be. Then we wrap up with some truly astonishing statements by Generals past and present. (We honestly couldn't believe our eyes when we read them!) Our Sponsor this week is Boogaloo Bob's, when your real soldiers won't crush your rebellion why not try Boogaloo Bob's, because nothing says law and order like fat white guys in flower print shirts! We open the show with a rose colored edition of a Founding Father and close with Massy jamming through a Neil Young tune! In his first speech as British Prime Minister Boris Johnson once again invited comparisons with his political hero Winston Churchill, suggested that British 'pluck and nerve' were needed to deliver Brexit and mobilised Britain's ports, banks, factories and more on a quasi-war footing. In light of this, here is an interview recorded for the D-Day commemorations which provides a more rounded perspective of British history through a key episode of the Second World War. Dr Jonathan Fennell discusses the frailty and trauma of the British war experience, Churchill’s objections to the Normandy landings, and the importance not just of the great individuals, but of collective effort of millions of ordinary people in winning the war.
