Join us on Calibrate Conversations as we explore "The Widening of God's Mercy," a new book by Richard B. Hayes and his son, Christopher B. Hayes. This episode unpacks the unexpected shift in Richard's perspective, a retired New Testament professor once known for his staunch defense of traditional biblical marriage. Together with Christopher, a professor at Fuller Seminary, they present a more inclusive stance on sexuality, which has stirred controversy and conversation within both evangelical and LGBTQ communities. We analyze their use of terms like "inclusive" and "hospitality" and challenge their assumptions about human sexuality from a conservative Christian viewpoint.Listen in as we navigate the complexities of interpreting God's character across the Old and New Testaments, especially concerning LGBTQ inclusion in the church. We discuss how some scholars might misinterpret biblical stories, like those involving child sacrifice, and explore the implications of open theism versus dispensational theology. Our conversation emphasizes that God's nature remains unchanged even as His interactions with humanity evolve, offering insights into the balance between scriptural authority and contemporary societal issues. This episode highlights the transformative power of God's mercy and the need for a compassionate, yet biblically grounded approach to modern debates on sexuality. In Daniel 12:2-3 the dead awake, some to life, some to shame and contempt. This has long been understood to refer to bodily resurrection, one of a few such OT passages. But there are indications in the text's language that its intended sense is otherwise. John Walton, Old Testament Professor Emeritus at Wheaton Graduate School, is a frequent contributor to this podcast. One of his most recent publications is The Lost World of the Prophets: Old Testament Prophecy and Apocalyptic Literature in Ancient Context. Dr. John Walton is a distinguished Old Testament scholar with extensive expertise in the Book of Job, having published a comprehensive commentary in 2014 and co-authored "How to Read Job" with Tremper Longman. Walton's perspective on Job emphasizes the text as a thought experiment rather than a historical account, focusing on the profound dialogue between Job and God. He underscores the limitations of human understanding and the complexity of divine justice, which transcend the simplistic retribution principle. Through his teachings and lectures worldwide, Dr. Walton illuminates the nuanced perspectives within the narrative, including the unique stance of the character Elihu, thereby enriching the global discourse on faith, suffering, and divine justice. 00:03:23 Contemplating God's Wisdom in Job 00:08:24 Debate on Divine Justice in Job 00:11:39 Suffering and Faith in the Book 00:11:55 Faith and Commitment in Serving God 00:14:25 Trusting God's Wisdom in Suffering Journeys 00:20:52 Embracing God's Wisdom in Times of Suffering 00:36:19 Lessons in Standing Strong and Surrendering 00:45:52 Redeemer's Role in Job's Innocence Vindication 00:51:16 Elihu's Innovative Interpretation of Retribution About the Guest: John H. We've heard of biblical literacy, but if we don't know what to do with the Bible once we've read it, we might be suffering from hermeneutical illiteracy. The lack can be especially apparent in approaches to the Old Testament. Dr. John Walton, Old Testament Professor Emeritus at Wheaton Graduate School, is a frequent contributor to this podcast. It has been the contention of Dr. John Walton that the authority of Scripture is located in the intention of the human authors as represented in what they wrote. In this conversation he explains what he means, in part by contrasting it with some other possible models. This week on the Patterns of Evidence podcast, we wanted to share one more engaging interview from The Moses Controversy Collector's Edition. Tim Mahoney interviews Dr. Peter Gentry, Professor of Old Testament Interpretation at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Learn Dr. Gentry's history and his journey into scholarship as he faced attacks on the Bible from his professors, all while God was giving him the tools and training needed to find answers to these criticisms. What should our mindset be when we encounter claims that are contrary to our faith? What is the purpose of Covenant in the Bible? And was the alphabet given by Divine inspiration? Tim and Peter discuss each of these topics. You can find the Collectors Editions of our films (the full video versions), which include hours of addition interviews and evidence not included in the main film, via the link below: https://store.patternsofevidence.com/collections/the-collectors-edition-box-set ➡️ HELP US FUND THE NEXT FILM
In a new article in The Atlantic, David Brooks asks how America became so mean. He says moral formation used to be a key part of social, religious, and educational structures in the country, but after World War II communal virtues were abandoned for an individualistic and therapeutic model. Simply put, we stopped teaching people how to be good. But what's missing from Brooks' solution? A popular preacher says he won't watch The Chosen because it violates the Second Commandment prohibiting any images of God. Is he right? Then, Dr. John Walton is back to discuss his new book, “Wisdom for Faithful Reading.” He explains why relying on the Holy Spirit isn't enough when engaging the Bible, and why he believes the American church isn't facing a crisis of biblical illiteracy but a crisis of biblical interpretation. Also this week—snakes are falling from the sky in Texas. The church has too often lost its way in reading the Old Testament for lack of sound principles of interpretation. When careless habits get us off track, we can lose sight of what the Bible is really saying, derailing our own spiritual growth and even risking discredit to God's word. We need a consistent approach to give us confidence as faithful interpreters. In Wisdom for Faithful Reading: Principles and Practices for Old Testament Interpretation (InterVarsity Press, 2023), the trusted Old Testament scholar John Walton lays out his tried-and-true best practices developed over four decades in the classroom. His principles are memorable, practical, and enlightening, including: The Bible is written for us, but not to us. Reading the Bible instinctively is not reliable and risks imposing a foreign perspective on the text. More important than what the characters do is what the narrator does with the characters and what God is doing through the characters. Not everything has a "biblical view." Along with identifying common missteps, Walton's insights point the way to stay focused on what the Old Testament text communicated to its original audience—and what it has to say for us today. When we submit ourselves to be accountable to the authors' intentions we experience the true authority of Scripture, and faithful reading fuels a faithful life. Using numerous examples across the breadth of the Old Testament and its genres, Walton equips thoughtful Christians to read more knowledgeably, to pay attention to God's plans and purposes, to recognize good interpretations, and to truly live in light of Scripture. You may never read the Old Testament the same way again. John H. Walton is professor of Old Testament, emeritus, at Wheaton College and Graduate School. Not everything has a "biblical view." How can we have a deeper and fuller walk with the Holy Spirit? Jack Levison, renowned theologian, and acclaimed author, has spent years studying the person of the Holy Spirit, and what he's found will surprise and transform you. He shares some of the secrets he's discovered that lead us to a fuller, deeper, and more powerful relationship with the Holy Spirit. Jack Levison holds the WJA Power Chair of Old Testament Interpretation and Biblical Hebrew at Southern Methodist University. He previously taught at Duke Divinity School and Seattle Pacific University. Jack has the gift of connecting with popular audiences with essays featured in The Huffington Post, parade.com, relevant.com, and beliefnet.com. He is the author and editor of many books, including A Boundless God. Which was Christianity Today's 2021 Book Award winner and his newest release, Seven Secrets of the Spirit-Filled Life. Here are a few highlights from our conversation: We start with a few questions I have about the Holy Spirit. First, the church feels all over the map on how we handle the Holy Spirit. Jack helps us understand a better way. Second, I ask Jack to explain why Scripture says we are both filled with the Spirit and indwelt by the Spirit. Jack explains this and shares that he believes the filling of the Spirit is to propel us toward mission. This was super interesting to me. An interesting thing about Jack and his wife is that they live in a dorm at SMU with 185 undergraduate students. He tells us about some of the challenges and blessings of this. Jack shares where the Lord led him as he meditated on John 14. So amazing to see the living and active Word at work! I love how God showed him something new in the passage. This leads us to talk about one of the secrets he discovered about life with the Spirit – we need to saturate ourselves in Scripture. The Spirit will help us recall – but we need something to recall first. This is why we need to be filling ourselves with God's word. Jack tells us why failed Bible study can be some of the best Bible study. This is interesting! We then talk about how God has upended some things in Jack's life as he's studied God's word. He tells us how his views have changed on some critical issues. Finally, Jack ends with some encouragement for us found in Acts 8 and the life of Philip. Super encouraging – and maybe a bit convicting. Dr. John Walton, Professor of Old Testament at Wheaton Graduate School, author of many books and articles relating to the background, literature, and theology of the Old Testament, has contributed several episodes to this podcast. His newest book, Wisdom for Faithful Reading: Principles and Practices for Old Testament Interpretation, is scheduled for release in April, 2023. The phrase, “Life After Exegesis,” should be understood as the way life is, or ought to be, different after exegesis than it was before. Exegesis does this by first directing our attention to God: Who he is. Only after that step are we ready to consider what all this means for us, and thus also for me.

In a world where there is continuing conflict around issues of race, sexuality, identity, and the value of human life, it's clear that there is a lot of confusion about what it actually means to be human. The creation narrative in Genesis 1 offers us way of cutting through that confusion and gives us a paradigm for being the human beings God created us to be. Wesleyans hold in tension both the goodness of God's creation in humanity as well as humanity's brokenness while emphasizing grace as the means by which the image of God can be restored in us. In this episode Bob and Stephanie interview Dr. Bill Arnold, Professor of Old Testament Interpretation at Asbury Theological Seminary, who offers us some insight from the Scriptures and the Wesleyan tradition on how we might reengage the truth and the vocation of being truly human. Check out Bill's article on a Wesleyan understanding of original sin in the new Firebrand online magazine.
