The eThekwini Municipal council has postponed the election of a new mayor after embattled former mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda was redeployed to the National Council of Provinces by the African National Congress after the 2024 general elections. Kaunda faced scriticism from opposition parties following his handling of the aftermath of the deadly 2022 floods, which left communities without water for prolonged periods of time and resulted in the closure of some of the metro's beaches after tests revealed high E.coli readings. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to SABC News reporter, Dries Liebenberg.
Morality and war. Two words that seem to have nothing to do with each other. Yet as recent events have shown, our conscience pricks us every time we hear news of an atrocity, smarts at every war and rumor of war. Can a war ever be just? Does talk about morality in the conduct of war make any sense?Joining Shadi and Damir to discuss this heady topic is Phil Klay, a novelist and essayist whose first book, the short story collection Redeployment, won the National Book Award in 2014. An Iraq War veteran, his work has focused on themes concerning war, citizenship, and the postwar life of veterans. His latest book is titled Uncertain Ground: Citizens in an Age of Endless, Invisible War. This episode does not have the usual verbal sparring and back-and-forth. The tone is meditative and the questions are profound. Shadi opens the conversation with a direct question: What does morality have to do with war? Phil responds with a description of the Medieval practice of imposing penances on soldiers, even those who fought in just wars. Damir presses Phil with the nagging question of where the “shoulds” and “oughts” come from in Phil's recent article about the war in Gaza. Phil develops a clear standard for sending citizens of a democracy to war. It is a fruitful idea, which Shadi and Damir chew on for the remainder of the episode. How should we, as a country, execute our military power, and what role should we, as citizens, play in military policy? In what ways does our current engagement in modern warfare, as it has evolved during the war on terror, fall short of the ideal, and what's the impact of that shortfall? What's the connection between our deep polarization at home and the endless, invisible conflicts we're mired in overseas? What does the conflict in Ukraine teach us about the power and significance of a clear and meaningful military mission, and about the inevitable tragedy of war? Phil Klay–a U.S Marine Corps veteran and the author most recently of the thought-provoking essay collection Uncertain Ground: Citizenship and an Age of Endless, Invisible War–tackles these questions and more with Eve and Julie on this episode of Book Dreams. Phil Klay is a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. His first book, Redeployment, is a collection of short stories set in wartime Iraq. It won the National Book Award and was selected as one of the 10 Best Books of the Year by The New York Times. His debut novel, Missionaries, also involves the military tactics of U.S. soldiers. Phil Klay, a Marine, noted author, and commentator, is the host of the PBS special AMERICAN VETERAN. A four-part documentary series tracing the veteran experience across the arc of American history and exploring the present-day divide between civilian and veteran communities. From the citizen-soldiers returning from the Revolution to today's warrior class, it is a deeply moving story, illuminating the veteran experience and drawing civilian viewers into an unfamiliar culture. Phil talks about his reason for joining up, MOS, time in Iraq, his book "Redeployment" and novel "Missionaries" with host Jim Fausone.
Everyone has a story to tell, but in the case of this week's guest, Phil Klay has the inherent gift of conveying his collection of insights and perspectives in short story form. His writings bring deeper meaning to life as they engage a broad audience. Phil is a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and his short story collection Redeployment has won multiple national book awards. Listen in as he joins Marcus & Morgan to tell of his military and personal life experiences. In this episode you will hear: • I've always believed in public service. • National service is a standard that everybody should serve in some way. • When I feel like I've almost died, it inspires me to convey that intensity in a novel. • Throwing in people together, who are different from each other, but all trying to achieve something in the service of the country, would be almost spiritually healthy. • It's stupid to climb off trail when there's no one around. • When you try to figure out how you feel about something, put it in a story. • There are some things that need to be communicated. It's important to communicate that to people. • The Marine Corps is a very complicated thing. • I started writing about my experiences, outside of the mold of typical conversation. • It's not that our life experiences themselves are very interesting, it's that you should reflect on them. It forces you to think more deeply about life. • When you think of your limits, know that there's a mental component to that. • If you think you can't, you can always take another step.

Modern warfare has become an intensely scattered, depersonalized affair. Violence still rages and traumas proliferate, but often remotely, the carnage hidden from public view. So what's the best way to write about it? How to convey the horror of armed conflict today? Few writers do that as well as Phil Klay, who won the National Book Award for his 2014 short story collection, Redeployment, which is based on his experiences as a marine during the Iraq War. His debut novel, Missionaries, expands those insights through the interlocking stories of four characters living in Colombia, Yemen, and the United States. In conversation with Commonweal critic Anthony Domestico, Klay shares insights into the ways that globalization, capitalism, and technological advances have made warfare both more deadly and less noticeable. A committed Catholic, Klay also discusses the sacramental worldview that undergirds his fiction, in which even death is “charged with the grandeur of God.”
How should we understand the current split between so-called “progressives” and “moderates” in the Democratic Party? In the middle of an uncertain primary campaign, where can they find compromise and unity? Longtime Commonweal columnist and political scientist E.J. Dionne, Jr. joins associate editor Matthew Sitman for a wide-ranging conversation about what it means to be a Democrat today. Pointing to Catholic social thought, and in particular the notion of human dignity, Dionne makes the case that there's a lot both wings of the party can agree on for improving people's lives. Plus, Phil Klay, winner of the National Book Award for his collection ‘Redeployment' and co-host of the podcast ‘Manifesto!' sits down with senior editor Matthew Boudway to talk about the “enfant terrible” of the contemporary French literary scene, Michel Houellebecq.
