He's even criticized JD Vance on Xitter!

It's Mayday! The word "Mayday" is an internationally recognized distress signal used in radio communications, primarily by mariners and aviators, to signal a life-threatening emergency. May Day is also known around the world as International Workers' Day, commemorating the fight for workers' rights and the eight-hour workday. Both uses are fitting for today, as around the country, protesters are taking to the streets to speak out against Dump and what his administration is doing to this country and the entire world.Today is also Thursday, so we'll check in with Howie Klein of DownWithTyranny and the Blue America PAC. Howie Klein has been a regular weekly guest on this show for close to 15 years now. He writes at DownWithTyranny.com and runs the Blue America PAC where he champions the best progressive candidates running for office. Ten years ago, Howie successfully fought a rare form of cancer and enjoyed a clean bill of health for years. Unfortunately, a few months ago he was diagnosed with cancer again, this time pancreatic.I tell you this because today, at the time we usually speak, Howie will be at the hospital getting a chemotherapy infusion. As he told me, if it's just the infusion, he'll be able to talk. But if the doctor decides to come talk to him at that time, he won't. Either way, we'll understand and there's lots to talk about. Unfortunately the "lots to talk about" is all pretty fucked up.Another mass shooting - this one at Florida State University, more Trump insanity on multiple fronts, and ratcheting up fears around April 20 and the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution.I think I need another Xanax...

I'm not quite sure what "yippy" means, but the guy with the *best* words used it to explain (in Dump's case, that means 'lie') why he reversed himself on his tariffs yesterday. People were getting yippy? Maybe it means that they were pissed off that their portfolios and retirement accounts were hemorrhaging money? I wonder how they're feeling today...In case you weren't paying attention, after Dump 'paused the tariffs', the market went on a bit of buying spree yesterday. It seems obvious to me and many others that market manipulation and insider trading were a big part of it, and the market closed up almost 3000 points.Early trading this morning saw most of the gains going away again. Now, with still about four hours left in the trading day, the Dow is down almost 1000 points. The DumpsterCoaster ride is still treacherous and nauseating. One thing we know for sure is that everything is uncertain, a dangerous place to be. A newchart today shows the US Economic Policy Uncertainty Index is literally off the charts. Howie Klein has been my regular Thursday guest for over a dozen years now, but our friendship goes back further to the early 90s, when I was doing rock radio in Los Angeles and he was president of Reprise Records. When Howie left Reprise and Warner Brothers as Time Warner and AOL merged, he began devoting all of his time to progressive politics, launching Down with Tyranny and the Blue America PAC.Danny Goldberg also worked in the music industry as a personal manager, record company president, public relations man and journalist since the late 1960s. When Howie and I first met, Danny managed Nirvana, Hole, Sonic Youth, Bonnie Raitt, The Allman Brothers, Rickie Lee Jones and more. From 2005-2006, Danny was CEO of Air America Radio. That was a few years before I joined the network and hosted a nightly show there.All three of us share the common experience of working in the music industry and being very involved in progressive politics. Today, we're all dealing with our current political situation as best we can. Admittedly, I am not handling it well.Two weeks ago on the show, Howie mentioned that he had dinner with his dear old friend Danny Goldberg, and told me that Danny had some very important and insightful thoughts on surviving these dark days and fighting back, and suggested we have Danny join us on the show. So he is doing that today. They'll be here for the second half-hour.Tonight, Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio Cortez will be in my neck of the woods. He should be back with us next week.Today, the senate is debating the continuing resolution passed by the Republicans in the House, even though most of them would never have voted for this if the orange man in the White House hadn't threatened them to do it. Because they'll need 60 votes to invoke cloture and avoid a filibuster, the Republicans will need help from seven Democrats to get that done. Rand Paul is the only Republican to say he'll vote no.We'll talk about why it's important that the Dems don't roll over and allow the Dump/fElon regime free reign to complete their goal of destroying what's left of our nation. The deadline is tomorrow or there will be a government shutdown.

We reached another Friday and it was another week filled with more crap than we could cover in an hour-long discussion, which is what Marcy Wheeler and I try to do each Friday. Watching the Dow crash for the third day in a row since the megalomaniac in chief unilaterally put 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, the orange one tried to change course again. First he suspended tariffs on cars from both nations. Then he paused the tariffs on Mexico for a month. As the market kept hemorrhaging, the then paused the tariffs on Canada for a month too. The Dow regained about 100 points of today's loss, but still closed down 428 points for the day, adding to the more than 1200 point drop sustained over the two previous days.At DownWithTyranny.com yesterday, Howie Klein wrote "Trump is Tanking the Economy — He's The Worst By That Metric Since Herbert Hoover" - and everyone else is realizing that reality too. I know. I escaped Florida after living there for half of my life. I don't have many kind words to say about the state that has mostly become a bad joke. But I'll sing their praises if the people of Florida come through on April 1. (And I'm not talking about an April Fools prank!)There are two special congressional races in FL being held that day to replace two of D'ump's cabinet nominees. Matt Gaetz left Congress as the rep for District 1 when he was ridiculously nominated to be AG. Thankfully we dodged that bullet and no longer have Gaetz in Congress. Rep Mike Waltz resigned from his seat representing FL6 to become D'ump's new national security advisor. The special election to fill those two seats from Florida is set for April 1, with the deadline to register this Monday, March 3. I've long theorized about our existence in "Opposite World" but never has it been more apparent than today as the sitting US President lies to the world about who started and is responsible for Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the ongoing war, now in its third year. The ONLY chance we have at making it out of this mess with any semblance of democracy in place is in the hands of Congressional Republicans. We only need a few in the House and four in the Senate, but are any of them willing to challenge the self proclaimed King of America and put their country and our constitution ahead of their jobs? Well, now the senate Democrats are getting the hang of it. Instead of just granting unanimous consent to end debate, allowing the Republicans to to ram through D'ump's horrendous cabinet nominees, it seems that they're finally getting in the fight. The debate began yesterday morning at 10:30am ET. They went all night long and are still going strong. The rules allow up to 30 hours of debate, so the Dems are apparently going to use every one of those hours to slow down the process. The judiciary branch - you know, one of the three CO-EQUAL branches of government has also begun stepping up to stop the convicted felon in the White House from gutting the 14th amendment, blocked Trump's co-president Leon from further accessing government databases, pushing tonight's ridiculous buyout offer for federal employees to resign, setting a new hearing for Monday. And the filibuster is delaying the vote on Project 2025 architect Russell Vought's nomination to be the new Budget Director. And there's more... Howie Klein of Down with Tyranny and the Blue America PAC returns with lots to say about the wholly unqualified people who the convicted felon in the White House has chosen to be in his cabinet. The senate confirmation hearings are running ad nauseum, many concurrently so we can't possibly cover all of them. But we'll do our best today. In addition to the testimony, much of which was filled with lies and non-answers, we'll also expose the failures of many of the Senate Democrats who cast unconscionable votes in support of some of the worst cabinet nominees in history. And we'll recognize and thank those who did the work we elected them to do, asking tough questions and voting against nominees who should never have a seat at the table.

Today is a National Day of Mourning. Sadly, that works on so many levels. Today President Jimmy Carter's official funeral was held. The last truly decent man to be president is gone. Perhaps some of his goodness will now enter the souls of those who have or seek power. But I'm not holding my breath. The mourning is not only for Jimmy Carter - it's for our democracy, the future of the nation (and the world), and my former home of Los Angeles where so many friends and former neighbors have lost everything. I've been hosting this show exclusively online since January 21, 2010. Prior to that, we were on Air America Radio weeknights. But on that day, Air America went dark... coincidentally, that was the day that the Supreme Court handed down its democracy-killing decision in Citizens United, basically equating money with speech and upending one of the legs of democracy. So, for more than 15 years now, Howie and I have spoken on the show almost weekly about our democracy and how to best keep or move the nation to be a bit more progressive. With the Extreme Court allegedly poised to hand down the final decisions for this term over the next two days, we're joined again by the Nicole Sandler Show's unofficial legal expert Lisa Graves. Apparently accidentally, someone posted a draft of one of the still outstanding decisions-- this one in Idaho vs US. Julian Assange is a free man in Australia again, primary upsets abound and Aileen Cannon is still somehow presiding over a clusterfuck of Trump's criminal trial for stealing and hiding classified documents. Whoo boy, another crazy busy day in our world... Somehow it's fitting that today marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day. And since I took the day off yesterday, there's so much to cover before Howie Klein joins in at the bottom of the hour, today joined by Conor O'Callaghan, who's running for Congress in AZ 01. An appeals court in GA put a hold on the Fani Willis case against Trump as he can't decide whether or not she should be removed from the case for having an affair with a prosecutor in her office, Senate Republicans tanked a bill codifying women's rights to birth control(!), the MAGAt House sent criminal referrals for Hunter Biden and James Biden, while Hunter Biden's trial on gun charges continues in Delaware. Two MAGAts were added to the House Intelligence Committee by the MAGAt speaker. And Boeing successfully launched a manned rocket headed for the International Space Station. At least none of the doors fell out. And, oh yeah, Steve Bannon is headed back to jail for four months after he was found guilty of ignoring a subpoena from the Jan. 6 Committee. report to jail on July 1st, just in time to miss the Republican National convention. Literally ten minutes before hitting the air, the word came down that the jury had reached a verdict in the first criminal trial of the former guy.  Needless to say, everything I had planned for today's show was thrown out the window.... but Howie Klein still joined me to help celebrate the news that our justice system works.  We were going as history was made today. Of course, the fight isn't over. Trump is playing the victim, trotting out his "it was rigged" tourettes. Stormy Daniels returned to the stand today for more grilling from the orange one's lawyer whose name is pronounced necklace (spelled Necheles) who basically seemed to rehabilitate Daniels today, however unintentionally. It's a Thursday, so we have a date with Howie Klein of Down with Tyranny & the Blue America PAC. It's not like there's a shortage of things to discuss... in fact, too much news for a one-hour show. There was the SCOTUS hearing this morning on Trump's ridiculous concept of absolute immunity (but there are some ridiculous people sitting on that extreme bench these days), the were 3 members of the AZ Republican House voting with all the Dems to kill the 1864 abortion ban (now goes to the senate and then the governor?). The FCC restored Net Neutrality rules killed by TFG's administration, and the FTC said no more airline junk fees. Of course TFG is still nodding off in a Manhattan courtroom where his first of four criminal cases against him is being heard. Another Thursday has arrived, which means we have two things going for us today: 1. Howie Klein is here and 2. Tomorrow's Friday so the weekend is near. This has been a crazy week at a moment in history that promises to be among the craziest, certainly in our lifetimes! The number of jurors seated in the first criminal trial of TFGDJT has dropped from 7 to 5. Why? Howie Klein has been doing a weekly segment on my show for more than a dozen years now. He and I first met some 30+ years ago on Los Angeles where I was doing (really great) music radio and he was President of Reprise Records. When Howie exited the music biz, he turned his energies toward getting real progressives elected to office. He began blogging at DownWithTyranny.com. In 2006, Howie joined forces with Heather "Digby" Parton of Digby's Hullabaloo (digbysblog.net) and John Amato of CrooksandLiars.com. They created the Blue America PAC, enlisting the help of Jacquie Propps (@Jacqrat) to help with the organizational aspects of running a PAC. Jaquie wrote "Fighting The Right Wing Since 2006" for the Blue America blog to reacquaint the blogosphere with Blue America, now in its 18th year. Tonight he'll deliver his 11th State of the City address. He's already announced his candidacy for NJ Governor; that election happens in November of 2025. So you might ask, "why today?". Former President Donald Trump is facing "insurmountable difficulties" in obtaining a bond to satisfy the $464 million civil fraud judgment, his attorneys said Monday in a new appellate court filing, and the magnitude of which would require him to use real estate as collateral.Judge Arthur Engoron in February ordered Trump to pay $464 million in disgorgement and interest after holding him liable for doing a decade's worth of business with fraudulent financial statements that overvalued his real estate holdings and hyped his wealth. Trump was also barred from leading any New York company for three years. His sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump were also fined $4 million apiece and barred for two years."Defendants have faced what have proven to be insurmountable difficulties in obtaining an appeal bond for the full $464 million," according to an affirmation by Trump Organization general counsel Alan Garten.While his lawyer said Trump is "financially stable" and maintains "substantial assets," the magnitude of the judgment would require him to use his real estate as collateral for the bond. So far, according to Garten's affirmation, no surety bond provider approached by Trump is willing to accept real estate as collateral, including Chubb, the insurance giant underwriting Trump's $91.6 million bond to cover the $83 million judgment in the E. Jean Carroll defamation case, plus interest.Surprise, Surprise! Putin Wins Another Russian “Election” That Vladimir Putin won his “election” is not a shocker. Exit polls show he came away with 88% of the vote. That it wasn't 100% is the surprise. The “win” gives Putin six more years in power at a time when his invasion of Ukraine has the world fearing what he'll do next. Trump gave a whopper of a campaign speech over the weekend. He warned of “bloodshed” if he doesn't win in November.  He also said the January 6th Committee should be jailed and that some undocumented immigrants aren't people. Big news broke yesterday while we were on the air - and I missed it! I didn't see that the Supreme Court finally announced their decision to hear TFG's appeal regarding his ridiculous claims of absolute immunity. So we'll deal with that at the start of the show - and really get into it on Friday's show when Marcy Wheeler is here. The other big news from yesterday was Mitch McConnell's announcement that he'll step down as Senate Minority Leader in November (but will remain in his senate seat).
