North Carolina's ballot access laws create an uphill battle for third parties seeking to get their candidates on the ballot, requiring more than 14,000 registered voters to sign their petition for access. Five of those parties were on the ballot in last year's election, and six have started the petition process for the 2026 election cycle. But only one party so far has made any serious progress toward getting 14,000 signatures. That's the North Carolina Forward Party, which had amassed 2,200 signatures so far. The Forward Party's chair, Patrick Newton, spoke with WUNC's Colin Campbell about the centrist party founded at the national level by former New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman and former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang.Newton sees ballot access for the Forward Party as a path for candidates who are too moderate to win a Democratic or Republican primary. Newton also spoke about the party's proposals for election reforms, its work backing candidates at the state and local level, and how the Forward Party compares to last year's “No Labels” party organization.

Andrew Walworth, Carl Cannon and RCP White House correspondent Phil Wegmann discuss whether President Trump will sign on to new sanctions against Russia, and a just released audio recording of Trump at a 2024 fundraiser shows the president informing donors that he once told Vladimir Putin he'd bomb Moscow if Russia invaded Ukraine. They also talk about CIA Director John Ratcliffe's decision to refer former CIA director John Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey for criminal investigation. Plus, new polls suggest that the President's budget bill is unpopular with voters and may impact Republicans in the 2026 midterms. Then, Carl talks with Nancy Jacobson, founder and CEO of No Labels and Ryan Clancy, chief strategist for No Labels about the organization's efforts to launch a third party, and about Elon Musk's current attempt. And finally, Andrew talks to Michael O'Neill, vice president of legal affairs at the Landmark Legal Foundation, about federal judges continuing their efforts to block Trump policies, despite a recent Supreme Court decision designed to limit their power to do so.

Interview by Angela CroudaceAs Militarie Gun gear up to hit Australian stages alongside Touché Amoré, frontman Ian Shelton looks forward to everything from unruly shows to venomous local wildlife. “I guess my bucket list would be to see one of these disturbing Australian spiders in the flesh,” he laughs. “I don't want to be in danger—but I'd like to see it.”It won't be Militarie Gun's first time down under, but their energy and evolving sound continues to resonate with fans worldwide. Known for fusing hardcore roots with melodic hooks, the band's genre-defying sound has sparked debate. “It's disingenuous to call us a hardcore band,” Shelton says. “We came from that world, but we just want to sound like Militarie Gun.”Originality is embedded in everything they do—from their cathartic lyrics to unexpected collaborations like writing a WWE wrestling intro track. “Post Malone was meant to do it but got too busy. I woke up to a text and spent two days writing riffs,” he recalls. Raw emotion drives Shelton's songwriting, a channel for experiences he says are too intense for everyday conversation. “The songs are the only appropriate place to put those feelings,” he shares. “I never hold anything back.”That vulnerability connects deeply with fans, who often bring wild energy to their gigs. “Last time in Sydney, we played Do It Faster four times. By the end, it was just one guy on stage. The rest of us had jumped into the crowd,” Shelton laughs. Despite their rising profile, Ian rejects the idea of “making it.” “It's not a career—it's an artistic pursuit,” he says. “If you ever feel like you've made it, you're not pushing yourself creatively.”When asked what he hopes audiences take away, his answer is simple: “I hope they feel something—even if it's anger. I don't want to make anything people feel indifferent about.” As for advice to new bands navigating today's fractured rock scene? “Be yourself—loudly,” Shelton says. “Turn your quirks up to 10. That's what people connect with.”With that in mind, expect more chaos, catharsis, and no holding back. The tour kicks off July 10 at the Triffid in Brisbane.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

But this time, we're looking at it through the lens of reckless love — the kind of love that doesn't make sense, the kind of love that runs toward the mess, not away from it.We explore the heart of the Father — the one who embraced his son in rags, who ran past shame and public opinion just to restore what was lost. It's about the reckless love of God that covers us even when we've wandered far.In this conversation, we talk about: • Why love must come before correction • What it means to receive love when you feel least worthy • How understanding God's love transforms our relationships, accountability, and identityThis one is for anyone who's ever felt too far gone, too broken, or too ashamed.

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Stefania Barca, distinguished researcher at the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, to discuss her recent book Workers Of The Earth: Labour, Ecology and Reproduction in the Age of Climate Change. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the GOP's government shutdown, ABC's inauguration plans, Social Security, Trump's cabinet, Trump's plan to privatize the post office, Syria's changing political landscape, Gaza's massive death toll, and McKinsey's liability in Purdue Pharma's opioid case, also touching on preparations for Trump's authoritarianism and the centrist “No Labels” party's struggles to not capitulate to the right. Dr. Stefania Barca, PhD, then joins, diving right into work on the broadening of “reproductive work” – a form of labor regarding social reproduction and the socializing, educational, and care work required for it – to include the need to cultivate and maintain a healthy environment for society to flourish sustainably. Stepping back, Barca unpacks the historical tension between labor and environmental movements, with the two being seen as in conflict between the interests of blue- and white-collar workers, respectively, despite that very tension being very prevalent within these specific movements themselves, expanding on that latter point by walking through the myriad strains of environmentalism – be it green capitalism, environmental justice, ecomodernism or degrowth – and how they approach concepts like consumption, labor transitions, production, and wealth inequality, with each taking on a different approach to the relationship between capitalism and the environment.  After expanding on the true alignment of the crises of care and the environment, Stefania parses through the value of understanding this reproductive work – in both social and environmental contexts – as one worthy of financial compensation, from the value it directly provides society in its immediate provisions to the central role it can play in pushing a necessary labor shift away from industries directly associated with environmental decay toward ones that can build to a sustainable future. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma tackle the growing call for Biden to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, unpack the coalescence of the GOP around alleged islamophobe, predator, abuser, and alcoholic Pete Hegseth's nomination, and look to history in their response to Marc Andreessen's call for an antithesis to FDR. Jimmy Dore responds to Peter Hotez's critique of RFK Jr. by… blaming the existence of polio on the polio vaccine, plus, your calls and IMs!
