In 1982, Canadian-based department store chain Zellers thought it would be fun to take a break from selling washers and socks and whatever and instead program Atari games. Why? Dunno. But I played one. It's called Donkey Kong. No, wait. Sorry! It's called INCA GOLD. You'll understand why I was confused after episode 325. Author, filmmaker and eco-warrior Jim Becket has completed his latest project," "Seeds of Vandana Shiva," about the fascinating Dr. Shiva, who grew up in the Himalayan hinterlands and is now using restorative and innovative agriculture as a way to feed the planet's hungry billions, while being a constant target of Big Ag for her fight against GMOs and their post-colonial power grabs in developing countries. It is merely the latest for this prolific creator, who, well into his 70s, climbed 19,341-foot-tall Mount Kilimanjaro with the sons of Julius Nyere and Idi Amin for "Sons of Africa," which he co-produced with another Ojai man, Jim Whitney. The film put together the son of the man who invaded Kenya to oust the tyrant Amin, with the son of the tyrant himself, for an introspective, enthralling look at the burdens of history as well as the promises of peace and reconciliation. Becket attended the prestigious Williams College before earning his law degree at Harvard. In his storied career, he put that human rights law degree to work with the United Nation's Commissioner on Refugees, helping hundreds of thousands of people dislocated from wars in Southeast Asia and Africa. He has written several books, including "Barbarism in Greece," which got him declared "persona non grata" by the ruling junta, as well as "Inca Gold" and "Murder on the Tour de France." He has written and directed seven feature films, in addition to his many documentaries focusing on social justice and environmental issues. https://vandanashivamovie.com/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Becket

Clive Cussler (1931-2020). Clive Cussler, who died at the age of 88 on February 24th, 2020, was an adventure writer in the tradition of the pulp magazines, and an underwater explorer. Most of his novels featured Dirk Pitt, a – to quote Wikipedia – a larger than life hero reminiscent of Doc Savage – and I might add, Indiana Jones, and involved sunken treasure, hidden artifacts, outrageous villains, and convoluted plots. Over the course of a career that began in 1965 when he switched over from advertising to write, he published 25 Dirk Pitt novels, 17 novels in the NUMA files series, 14 novels in the Oregon Files series, 11 Isaac Bell adventures set in the early 20th Century, 12 Fargo adventures focusing on a treasure-hunting couple, five books of non-fiction, and two children's books. Two of his books became films, Raise the Titanic and Sahara. Richard A. Lupoff and Richard Wolinsky interviewed Clive Cussler on May 24th, 1994 while he was on tour for his most recent book, Inca Gold. Though well into his sixties, he was still in the early part of his writing career, having written only Dirk Pitt novels, of which Inca Gold was the 12th. He would wind up with a library of 86 titles, with one published in early March 2020 and another coming out in May,2020. There are probably more waiting their turn. While Inca Gold was only his 12th book, all Dirk Pitt novels to that point, he would go on to write another 74 books, most of them novels in various later series. The final Dirk Pitt solo novel, Celtic Empire, was published in 2019, which also saw The Titanic Secret, which featured both Pitt and Isaac Bell, each operating a century apart. Wrath of Poseidon, a Fargo adventure, is scheduled to be published this May, and Journey of the Pharoahs, a NUMA files novel, was published on March 10th of this year. He did wind up selling another Dirk Pitt novel to Hollywood, Sahara, in 2005, with Matthew McConnaughy as Pitt, also featuring Penelope Cruz and William H. Macy. It turned out to be one of Hollywood's most expensive flops to date, and Clive Cussler never sold another book to the movies. The post Clive Cussler (1931-2020) appeared first on KPFA.
Bookwaves: Lisa See, whose latest novel is “The Island of Sea Women,” in conversation with Richard Wolinsky. The author of several historical and mystery novels, and a memoir, Lisa See's novels usually focus on the relationship of two women, mother-daughter, sisters, best friends, and how they cope with their lives over the years. “The Island of Sea Women” takes place on South Korea's Jeju island, where gender roles were traditionally reversed, with the women divers serving as breadwinners, while the men stay home and raise the children. In the interview, Lisa See discusses her focus on relationships, on the nature of forgiveness, and of the violent history of Jeju Island, and its relationship to United States foreign policy. Oax - Love And Crashing After four years of heavy touring schedules with Bishop Allen and The Rosebuds, it was time to leave New York and head back South to his home of Houston, TX. Not the hippest city in the country, but that was sort of the point. What started as a open-ended hiatus from music and a venture into graduate school in architecture at Rice University, it didn’t take too long before Giorgio Angelini started writing music again. Oh, and there was a break-up, of course. What record worth it’s weight in wax hasn’t been seeded by a good ol’ fashioned heart ripping? Distance is, indeed, a killer.Oax is the result. The name coming from the seemingly endless canopy of live oak trees that covers Houston like a carpet. Not native to Houston, the trees were planted by early settlers as a way to provide shelter from the punishing Texas sun. And lucky enough, they managed to thrive like weeds in the swampy bayou soup of Houston soil. Read More: http://s.tt/12XSw 15. Laura Stevenson & The Cans - Master Of Art As some of the finest musicians Brooklyn has to offer, it’s hard to believe Laura Stevenson & The Canshaven’t achieved the epic fame their music demands. They can jump from subtle folk, to bluegrass, to rock, to punk and back again within the bat of an eyelid. Stevenson can manipulate her voice to sound kitsch and rabid at any one time; she can put out stars and light them back up again. I’d be unsurprised if she spends most of her time walking on her hands. One minute you’re listening to a leftfield take on acoustic music; the next you’re basked in a fervour that borders shouty, punchy hysteria. And it always works; there are never any flaws. Jonnie previously worked under the monniker Tiny Steps releasing records through the Fence Collective. A summerous collection of wondrously understated pop oddities, coming in at just over thirty minutes, at moments it understated charm reminds one of the quieter more modest moments of the National’s work.At others his twinkling instrumentals and quick fire, playful vocal ticks are wonderfully redolant of The Beta Band. Stream the entire album below. Read More: http://s.tt/12RGc 17. Inca Gold - Dark Moves After a well received debut EP, Inca Gold I in February, London four piece Inca Gold released the second in a triptych for 2011, Inca Gold II on 8th June on Color and Vision Records. Ethereal vocals? Check? Keyboard bleeps? Swirling Psychedelia? Yep Cinematic atmosphere!? Yes sirrreee…. The equation for Inca Gold‘s wide screen soundscapes could appear in a book about ‘how to surf the zeitgeist in 2011′s all too cluttered music scene.’ But wait their formula doesn’t contain pretension of MGMT, the blandness of the xx, or the sheer annoyance of The Naked or the Famous! Inca’s modest lilting, dreamy refrains ghost their way into your brain like half remembered dreams of the past. Read More: http://s.tt/12Qv4 18. Grant K Fennell -Three O'Clock Starting out on the live circuit aged just 13, Grant K. Fennell has meticulously climbed his way up the musical ladder, fusing with psych, ska, garage and folk troupes along his way. This isn’t because Fennell doesn’t want to shackle himself down to the restrictions of a singular genre – it is simply because he can’t. With tastes and influences as extensive as his (Flaming Lips, Nick Drake, Mastodon, Frank Zappa, Animal Collective, Van Morrison, Coheed and Cambria, Kate Bush, Queens of the Stone Age), Grant’s music is a sedimentary of sounds, with layers of prog, folk rock, hardcore, desert rock, country, even blaxploitation, forming the musical force that he is. The history of humanity - as told through one hundred objects from the British Museum in London - is back in South America. This week Neil MacGregor, the museum's director, is with the powerful elites - exploring the great empires across the world 600 years ago. Today he is with a small gold model of a llama, the animal that helped fuel the success of the great Inca Empire that ruled over some 12 million people right down the Pacific West Coast. For a culture living at high altitude in rough terrain and without horses or pack animals, the llama proved all important - for wool, for meat and for sacrifice. Neil tells the story of the Inca, the ways in which they organised themselves and things that they believed in. And he recounts what happened when the Spanish arrived. The scientist and writer Jared Diamond and the archaeologist Gabriel Ramon help tell the story. Producer: Anthony Denselow.
