How do we honour and protect our ancestors and cultural traditions while embracing our post-modern world and lives? If you are interested in how we can protect people and the planet in these rapidly changing times, listen to my guest Sue Kim, Korean-American filmmaker & director of The Last of the Sea Women. The first feature from Malala Yousafzai's new production company, Extracurricular Productions, the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the NETPAC Prize for best film from the Asia-Pacific region. The documentary highlights the haenyeo—or female divers of South Korea's Jeju Island who for centuries, have been diving to the ocean floor without oxygen to harvest seafood for their livelihood. Today, this ancient culture is disappearing with most divers now in their elderly years. With environmental threats looming, the haenyeo‘s way of life is in imminent danger.Sue makes films that celebrate people and ways of life that reflect the dynamic interplay of humanity and the world around us, and show us what we need to be aware of in these changing times so that we look after what is essential to our wellbeing and longevity on a healthy and sustainable planet. She shows us a world that is held in a delicate balance- where our decisions matter, in order for us to create a future that supports all people and the planet. You can watch Sue's film The Last of the Sea Women on  Apple TV+And follow her on Instagram on @suebaccaFollow Host Lou Hamilton: Instagram @brave_newgirl & Linkedin @LouHamiltoncreatelabLou helps you transform your health & wellbeing: LOU'S LIFE LAB SERVICES HEREFor Lou's creative transformation and art practice go to ART HIVE or LOUHAMILTONARTJoin our Brave New Girls retreats to reset and reconnect with what really matters to you. “The Last of the Sea Women” sounds like it might be a B movie classic in the mold of “King Kong vs. Godzilla.” But while Sue Kim's fascinating and sui generis feature directorial debut shares very little in common with that movie genre, it does spotlight a group of extraordinary women from South Korea who have been living like real-life superheroes for centuries.   Sue joins Ken on the pod to talk about the remarkable haenyeo divers, who for many generations have been free diving off the coast of Jeju Island and other places in South Korea to harvest seafood and live as successful independent entrepreneurs. In the process, the haenyeo, most of whom are in their 60s and 70s, have formed a powerful bond and created a culture that has become legendary. Now, due to climate change, pollution and other factors, the haenyeo's way of life is under threat. As the haenyeo become active in the fight to preserve their culture and protect the environment, a new generation of haenyeo has emerged. But, with most haenyeo aging out of the profession, can this way of life survive? If this sounds like the plot of a superhero movie, then you wouldn't be far off.   “The Last of the Sea Women” is currently streaming on Apple+   Follow: @suebacca on Instagram @topdocspod on Instagram and X   Hidden Gem: “Liquor Store Dreams”   The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.

This week Evan and Dave kick things off with THE LAST OF THE SEA WOMEN (3:07) (after Dave forgets to do his own intro at the top; whoops), a documentary about the haenyeo, a declining and aging community of women in Jeju, South Korea, who dive for seafood as a job - or, as Evan more accurately describes it, a calling - while dealing with climate change, over-fishing, and crucially, wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Then Megan joins Evan and Dave for THE OUTRUN (17:17), director Nora Fingscheidt's adaptation of Amy Liptrot's memoir (with a screenplay by Liptrot, the director, and Daisy Lewis). Saoirse Ronan stars as Nora, an alcoholic whose struggle to stay sober takes her from rehab, to an outpatient facility, to her family farm, to one of the most remote isles in Scotland's Orkney Islands. In collaboration with renowned activist, Malala Yousafzai, Director & Producer, Sue Kim presents “The Last of the Sea Women,” an extraordinary band of feisty grandmother warriors who wage a spirited battle against vast oceanic threats. Often called real-life mermaids, the haenyeo divers of South Korea's Jeju Island are renowned for centuries of diving to the ocean floor—without oxygen —to harvest seafood for their livelihood. Today, with most now in their 60s, 70s, and 80s, their traditions and way of life are in imminent danger. But these fierce, funny, hardworking women refuse to give an inch, aided by a younger generation's fight to revive their ancestral lifestyle through social media. Sue sits down with me to discuss the mental and physical fortitude that it takes to be a haenyeo and the protective factors that come from being part of a community of strong and supportive women.  The documentary, The Last of the Sea Women will premiere on Apple TV on October 11, 2024.

Lisa See, author of Lady Tan's Circle of Women, The Island of Sea Women, and more, we talked about the interior side of writing–things like dealing with your inner critic and dealing with the parts you would really rather not do, thank you very much, including: - The fascinating tidbit of information her research taught her about Los Angeles - How the Chinese public discourse about protection against smallpox epidemics 500 years ago are eerily similar to the controversy over Covid vaccines we recently experienced - The predictable emotional rollercoaster she rides each time during the revision process - Why writers should start celebrating good sentences the way Olympians celebrate an important point - The ninja trick of agreeing with your inner critic - A potential peril of becoming an internationally bestselling author - How the inevitable losses we experience with age can deepen your writing - The things she says no to now that she's the age that she is - Some of the beliefs and attitudes passed down through the Chinese side of her family she really had to work to cast off (and how her mother, who is not Chinese, helped) - Why reading fiction is her go-to personal development tool Big thanks to our sponsor, AquaTru.com. I'm talking with Lisa See, the New York Times bestselling author of so many beloved books, including Lady Tan's Circle of Women, The Island of Sea Women, Snow Flower and the Secret Ban, Shanghai Girls, and Dreams of Joy. Lisa's books often center the experience of women across time and cultures, particularly stories that have been lost, forgotten, or deliberately covered up. Lisa talked with me while she was on vacation and I'm so thankful that she carved out some time for us. We covered: - How her mother and grandfather were both writers, so she, naturally, vowed never to become one… and how that all changed when she was bumming around Europe on $5 a day after college - The atrocious 1970s TV miniseries that was so poorly written, it inspired her to try writing fiction (under the pen name Monica Highland) - How she started researching the Chinese side of her family thinking that she'd include a short letter about it in that year's holiday card, and how that grew into “On Gold Mountain,” her first book written under her own name, as well as a national bestseller and New York Times notable book - What's been easy and what's been hard about her work as a novelist - A peek into her (fascinating) research process - The routine she follows every morning routine (that involves waiting for her husband to get done exercising) - Why she doesn't worry about keeping her tea hot Big thanks to our sponsor, AquaTru.com. None of the dates, titles, or other references from that time have been changed.  Korean “sea women,” or the Haenyeo, have made a living freediving off Jeju Island for centuries. Many of them supported entire families with their harvest and became part of an ancient tradition of female breadwinners in Korea since the 17th century. They played a vital role in the island's recovery through colonialism and the Cold War. But now, with rising sea temperatures and decreasing harvests, will we see this tradition disappear?  In this episode:  Anna Kook, (@annakook), AJ+ Field Reporter Episode credits: This episode was updated by Fahrinisa Campana and Joe Plourde. In Colombia, the coastal town of Buenaventura boasts one of the country's busiest ports. Local communities rely to a great extent on fisheries and aquaculture to make a living, and women make up a large part of the workforce. These women fish sellers – known as the Platoneras - work informally and earn low wages.  Like more than half of the world's population, they are not covered under any social protection scheme, making them particularly vulnerable to adverse shocks such as illness, injury, and the eventual onset of old age. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO, and its partners including the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, NORAD, are supporting the Platoneras to strengthen their livelihoods and improve their access to social protection schemes - all the while boosting the community's food security. Oh this conversation is going to fill you up, inspire you and most likely give you a new perspective on two resources you may be taking for granted: Water + Wilds. Meet Dr. Wendy Pabich.Wendy acknowledges that today's world has brought on so much stress and disconnected most of us from who we really are. Through her own studies and experiences she knows that Water + Wilds have the capacity to teach, ground and heal us. Our relationship with Water + Wilds can help us reestablish connection to ourselves, the planet, and to each other. We walked away from this conversation with an entirely new perspective on water and our relationship with water. Wendy holds a PhD in Water Resources and a Master of Science in Environmental Policy and Planning from MIT, a Master in Science in Coastal Geology from Duke University, and a Bachelor of Arts  in Geography from Dartmouth College. She is also the author of “Taking on Water: How One Water Expert Challenged Her Inner Hypocrite, Reduced Her Water Footprint, and Found Nirvana."And Wendy is a Yogini, President of Water Futures, which helps organizations ensure water security, has taught for MIT and the Sierra Institute, and has taken students to the wilds of Patagonia, the Himalaya and Alaska. Wendy's work focuses on bringing wellness to women through Water + Wilds. We dive (mind the pun!) into what that means and how you can start to tap into your own Water Wisdom and healing powers.
