From the archiveApril 2022"As the slap reverberates around the world we talk all things comedy with Jayde Adams - who went from working in Asda Bedminster to her own Amazon Prime Special. She just starred in a new BBC documentary following her move back to Bristol. Going deep about how the death of her sister made her so driven, are there red lines in comedy, and what it is like coming home."
Bristolian alt-metal act Mallavora have released their brand-new album, ‘Echoes', out now via Marshall Records. An EP that explores chronic illness, neurodiversity, and identity, blending shades of rock, alt-metal, and vocalist Jessica Douek's Middle Eastern roots. A stunning release that we gave 10 out of 10 and described as: Cathartic and inclusive, there's so much to Mallavora and so much to unpack with this EP that, chances are, we could still be talking about the four tracks on offer in a year's time. That's now impactful the music is and that is how important what Mallavora are doing is here. A band that genuinely feels like they can make a difference when it comes to inclusivity within the music industry and making those who feel forgotten about, heard. You can read our review of the full EP here: https://www.gbhbl.com/ep-review-mallavora-echoes-marshall-records/ We spoke to Guitarist Larry and vocalist Jessica, who live with chronic illnesses, about this record and their journey to this point. Discussing how they plans were upended by them winning ‘The Deal' in the most positive of ways, going on to record this EP at Marshall Records' studios and open The Avalanche Stage at Download Festival earlier this year. We also discuss opening up, speaking about issues that are important to them, accessibility at venues, how everyone can get involved, and so much more. Laksa's (@laksauk) contribution to techno is as vital as it is hard to define. The London-based Bristolian never sits still in one stylistic niche and is as likely to ramp up the techno as he is slow then down. His meticulously designed grooves have come on tasteful labels like Hessle Audio, Timedance and Ilian Tape, always with a focus on dance floor dynamics. Further creative outlets come in the form of the re:lax label, club night and NTS show he runs with with re:ni. Most recently he has cooked up the WONDA EP which includes a vocal collaboration with Nyege Nyege-affiliated Phelimuncasi The podcast he serves up for us is, in his own words, "a mix of hype and hypnotism" and it includes some tasty unreleased music from the man himself as well as the likes of Ma Sha, Siu Mata, Erik Luebs and Crespi Drum Syndicate. The 90 minutes are as wide-ranging as you might expect with bass-heavy grooves, trance-inducing synths, broken techno workouts and tribal rhythmic explorations all making sure both head and body are catered for in style.
Back in the 1970s, a group of Bristolian idealists dreamed of a nation stitched together by safe cycling paths, which would make us less reliant on our cars. They founded what would become Britain's 13,000 miles long National Cycle Network. Cycling journalist Laura Laker wondered what had gone right and, indeed, wrong, with a network once described by the CEO of the charity that runs it as “a bit crap”, and set off on an epic journey around the UK to find out more. That journey became the basis for her new book, Potholes and Pavements: A Bumpy Ride on Britain's National Cycle Network. Fellow cycling enthusiast Jen, caught up with Laura to talk about what inspired her journey, the magic of travelling by bike, and why all leaders of a country should go on a big old road trip before they sign up to the job. A huge moment for both Swifties and Red Breasts alike, for today's the day we hear the hit new single about “What if Taylor Swift broke up with a Bristolian comic who specialises in emotional heft.”The crowds are in and the red carpet is out, as despite Elis and John seemingly confusing a first play with a film premiere, this is an occasion. Elsewhere a listener sends in another wonderful Made Up Games jingle BUT it must pass the discerning ear of Johnny JR.If you want to check out our songwriter, and her shows / work, it's the very funny and talented Charlene Kaye. Just give her a Google. To get in touch with the show then elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk or WhatsApp 07974 293 022 are the places to go.

Many of us are travel looking for food experiences and we often want to eat something that is authentically of that place. So we seek out the local delicacy which hopefully reflects the local landscape, history and people. However many of the foods we think of as quintessential ‘destination' foods are elevated in the 20th century with the rise of easier travel and more and more tourism. On the other hand, it's easier than ever to access to ‘global' food in the towns and cities we live in. Sheila Dillon explores what travelling to eat looking for authentic experiences means in an increasingly globalised world. We start the programme hearing the story of Nashville Hot Chicken from journalist Zach Stafford. In recent history, Hot Chicken went from an obscure speciality of a specific community in North Nashville, Tennessee to one if it's most iconic symbols. Zach tells the story of how Hot Chicken became part of the ‘Disnification' of Nashville as it has become a popular tourist destination. But like so much of American culture the story is racialised with new white owned businesses making money from a food created by a black community.Sheila then travels to Brussels to become a food tourist herself. Guided by Elisabeth Debourse, Editor-in-Chief at Le Fooding she explores whether the search for the elusive ‘authentic' local food is helpful in trying to get a good meal. She visits Rue des Bouchers and restaurant Les Brigittines.Someone who's thought a lot about food and place is food writer Anya von Bremzen. It's something she explores in her latest book is National Dish. She talks about how many iconic foods linked to place are much more modern than we might think. The Food Programme is based in Bristol and although the city has a distinct culture, it doesn't have an iconic ‘destination food.' Sheila talks to is an actor, born and bred Bristolian and the new presenter of ‘A Proper Bristol Breakfast,' the Radio Bristol morning show about Bristol's eclectic food identity.Produced by Sam Grist for BBC Audio in Bristol

Your Bristol Life is back for a second series of five podcasts shining a light on underrepresented aspects of Bristol's history. This BCfm series was made with the Bristol Cable, Bristol History Podcast and In The Dark. *** A Bristol Boy's Disabled Life by Richard Prior *** Local lad Richard Prior is blessed with a wonderful family and two beautiful daughters who bring love and laughter to him every day. But he also suffers from hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy; a form of Muscular Dystrophy which restricts movement and causes constant pain. This episode examines how the family cope with the condition, as they suffer also due to the genetic nature of the condition. We hear about growing up with a visible disability and how it can impact on school life and more. Richard's parents share how they felt trying to support him over the years and how they had to make difficult decisions. Richard is a very proud Bristolian, but how accessible is the city for a disabled person? A life full of ups and downs. This is Richard's story. *** Featured artwork by Jon Trace

Avenue Red presents a fresh, tasty package of divine deepness from Evening Selection - a duo made of Mateusz Szmigiero and Michał Kramar from the Polish capital city of Warsaw. These guys run an excellent radio show on Radio Kapitał, Warsaw (every 4 weeks on Mondays at 21:00 Warsaw time) and have featured some incredible underground guests including Al Bradley, OHM, Lerosa, Seafoam, Thomas Wood, Andu Simion, Tim Jackiw and Verlake among others. They have their guests rolling the cross-genre phat blunts alongside their own incredible, thoughtfully crafted mixes, having also created some excellent concept shows where the duo take advantage of the full 2 hours themselves. Highly recommended listening, educational, even. Find a flaw in this mix and you may need some help. Deep house & techno perfection, delivered. "This one's been a long-time coming, as they say... having enjoyed many a mix from Avenue Red's coveted back catalogue we felt like this one has got to be special. Given we dig a fairly wide spectrum of what can be described as 'deep 4/4', it was challenging to keep ourselves focused and squeeze in as many different styles and inspirations into roughly 60-70 minutes... a subconscious tribute of sorts to the mix CD format of yore, perhaps? What you'll find inside is the fruit of a lot of back-and-forth, heated debates and frantic exchanges regarding what tracks we should go for. We also like to think it's a decent representation of what we're listening to and playing - a bit of dubbed-out soundscapes, a side of breaks, a speck of continental minimal, a hint of the Bristolian vibe, some techy stuff from across the pond, the properly cold sound of 90's techno and last but not least, the deeper shade of house. Thinking about it... you could probably get a much better mix out of all the tracks we rejected (think of all the Drexciyan electro!). Then again, that's a really good reason to record another podcast at some point in the future :-) Put together in Warsaw, on a leisurely-paced mid-week mid-morning in late December '22." Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani education activist and the world's youngest Nobel Prize laureate. Malala was just 15 when, on the way home from school, a member of the Taliban boarded her bus, asked for her by name, and shot her in the head. In the decade since, Malala has continued to fight for the educational rights of girls and women across the globe through her charity, the Malala Fund. Now she's turned her attention to Hollywood, most recently as Executive Producer of the short documentary film Stranger At The Gate – which has been nominated for the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Film. The line-ups for this summer's festivals are being announced – and there's a noticeable absence of headlining women. Glastonbury has three men headlining, as does Latitude Festival. Why is there such an imbalance when it comes to female artists and big gigs? What needs to be done to change it? CEO and owner of Green Man Festival Fiona Stewart joins Nuala alongside creator of the F-list directory of female musicians, Vick Bain. When should you bring up the topic of whether or not you want children with a partner? If you have different opinions, do you walk away from an otherwise happy relationship? Nuala is joined by Relationship Counsellor Val Sampson and listener Sarah to discuss the healthiest way to go about it. The Bristolian comic and star of last year's Strictly Come Dancing, Jayde Adams has written a brand new show ‘Men, I Can Save You,' to explore her relationships with men and learn from how she has been treated in the past. She talks to Woman's Hour about how she wants to guide men to salvation with humour. Presented by Nuala McGovern Producer: Louise Corley
Is there anything Jayde Adams can't do? Acting, comedy, cooking, hosting, dancing, all things she's had huge success in. After her sister died of a brain tumour, Jayde has done her proud; she co-hosted the BAFTA nominated series Snackmasters and Crazy Delicious with Heston Blumenthal, starred in the BAFTA winning series Alma's Not Normal, made an Amazon prime stand up special called Serious Black Jumper sharing her views on the Kardashians and celebrity life, and performed on Strictly Come Dancing, to name a few! With her recognisable Bristolian accent, working class background and appetite for changing perceptions and norms in TV, which she does just by being herself, Jayde has become a star. She's funny, compelling and full of wisdom about life and work. Here she talks to Annie about why she loves change and how the biggest changes in her life have made her untouchable. Jayde's latest stand up show Men, I Can Save You is touring the UK in March.Changes is a deaf friendly podcast, transcripts can be accessed here: https://www.anniemacmanus.com/changes Hosted on Acast. Gavin Hogg & Hamish Ironside - We Peaked at Paper: An Oral History of British Zines - in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.boatwhistle.com/we-peaked-at-paper The book consists of 21 in-depth interviews with editors of zines. Hogg and Ironside travelled across Britain to carry out interviews, seeking to examine the widest possible range of publications: from the science fiction zines of the 1930s right up to the present day, in the form of a thriving Bristolian zine begun by a ten-year-old editor during the COVID pandemic. Case studies include legendary zines such as Sniffin' Glue and Ablaze!, as well as lesser-known zines about football, feminism and charity shops.

We're joined by author and musician, CJ Thorpe-Tracey on this week's Sheer Isolation. His loyal fanbase know him better as Chris TT. Over two decades, Chris released ten albums and over a hundred songs. The Huntsman Comes A-Marchin' was frequently covered by Frank Turner in his early days of touring. Chris has now published his first book - Buried in the English Earth. It's a lyric book that features every one of his published songs, along with detailed notes and analysis of the meaning. He tells us that he has retired as a songwriter, but is now turning his attention to novel writing. Music this week is provided by post-punk poet Bristolian, Emily Breeze, and Chris picks a track from Jim Bob; a band fronted by James Morrison from indie punk chart-toppers, Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine. We also cover the news that previous guest, Thomas Haynes - aka Grasslands - has created his own local music magazine in print, and the Wiltshire wurz-rap artist, Corky, has announced in EP launch - some 15 years after his debut album!
This week, listener Martin has written in with a list of life skills, to see if Joel & Hannah can tick them off. Can you change a tyre? How about re-wire a plug? Plus, Joel's incredible transformation from Bristolian, to South Londoner, LITERALLY overnight. Email: Hello@NeverEverPod.com Instagram: @NeverEverPod Thanks for listening. Your Bristol Life is a new series of five podcasts shining a light on underrepresented aspects of Bristol's history. This BCfm series was made with the Bristol Cable, Bristol History Podcast and In The Dark. *** The Bristolian Refugee by Sam Sayer *** What is it like to leave your country of origin and go to a strange, faraway land to find safety? How do you feel about your new city and what kind of welcome do you receive? How long does the label ‘refugee' remain stamped on your identity? Do you choose to embrace it? When does Bristol really become home? In this audio documentary against the backdrop of Bristol as a City of Sanctuary, Sam Sayer explores these questions with refugees who have settled in Bristol over the past 50 years from Ukraine, Iran, Kenya, Chile and Uganda share their early experiences of Bristol life. The audio documentary begins with the newest of refugees, Diana and Jennie, who have recently arrived from Ukraine and are getting used to waking up to English voices. Adineh and Siavash from Iran have unexpectedly found new family here in Bristol to support them. JP from Kenya is a huge football fan and watching the game with others has become an important feature of his life. Luis and Carmen from Chile found lasting friendship through their children's school, while Rashid from Uganda discovered home through his shop's customers. Featured Artwork by Jon Trace

This week I met with Professor Nick Groom, to discuss the life, work and reputation of the Bristolian poet Thomas Chatterton. Born in Redcliffe in 1752, Chatterton was a precocious talent. In just seventeen years of life he produced a great body of poems, plays, prose works and a collection of medieval writings that he attributed to a fictional 15th century monk named Thomas Rowley. We discussed the details of Chatterton's short life and the myths that surround his posthumous reputation.
Our guest this week on Sheer Isolation has his finger on the pulse of Salisbury's music scene. Thom Belk has been organising music nights in the city for over 15 years. He's currently in charge of the entertainment at Brown Street - a new venue on the site of The Chapel. Thom tells us about their plans for extending Brown Street, and how Salisbury has recently lost it's biggest venues because of the pandemic. Fortunately the music scene is now on a road to recovery. We also play a couple of tunes - Thom chooses a number of Salisbury's upcoming bands, so we've picked a track from Love Is Enough. Kieran's choice for the week is the latest release from Oxford's The People Versus, which has already attracted the interest of some national radio stations. In our news section we share some positive news on Big Jeff's recovery - the famous gig-going Bristolian was sadly involved in a house fire earlier this year. We also give a shout out for the Womad festival which takes place on the outskirts of Malmesbury over the last weekend of July.
Join Matt and Kate for Episode 26 where we are joined by the incredible, the legendary and downright sexy Dan Bone from The Podcast on Haunted Hill! The city's longstanding and self-proclaimed satirical scandal sheet has a reputation for not holding back on attacking local politicians, along with the great and the good for alleged wrongdoing. But what is the story behind the anonymously produced publication? Once nominated for a Paul Foot award, is their approach of journalism mixed with what many see as relentless trolling relevant in a changing media environment?Neil Maggs and a long-standing contributor to The Bristolian hash it out. Raya and Stephen steam through a jam-packed pod that tackles that stickiest of situations; asking people to contribute to your charity bike ride (when that's your favourite thing to do in the world). And in our featured interview; comedian, presenter, West End star and Harry Hill sidekick Charlie Baker is grilled about his love of cycling, which in a neat piece of (clincher wheel shaped) circularity, includes details of his fascinating war-and-genealogy based cycling challenge of 2018. Also on this Pod; a self-charging bike light (honestly), a completely unbelievable (as heavily spun) statistic about city cycling, a cheeky Bristolian who stole back her stolen bike (go girl), a Triathlete nun (amen), and a near-death You Drive Like a D*ck that has both Raya and Stephen squealing like petrified children.
