Episode 275 is filled with Black Girl Magic as I sit down with Kimel Fryer and Kayla Myers of Indie Memphis. The 24th annual Indie Memphis Film Festival is happening October 24th-29th at Crosstown Theater, Circuit Playhouse, Hattiloo Theatre, Playhouse on the Square, Malco Studio on the Square, and online filled with a diverse lineup of films, shorts, documentaries and entertainment. Kayla Myers is a film programmer, writer, and filmmaker from and based in Memphis. Currently, she works as a programmer and Black Creators Forum Manager at Indie Memphis. She's previously been the Features programmer for the San Francisco Documentary Festival, and the Series Producer for The DocYard in Cambridge, MA. She is passionate about intersectional feminist practices within the arts, making films more accessible to those not living in large filmmaking centers, and developing audiences with a thoughtful, community-centered approach.

Kimel Fryer is a seasoned professional who transitioned from a successful nine-year career in corporate finance to becoming the Executive Director of Indie Memphis. Having previously served as a Senior Financial Analyst for the Healthcare Business Unit at FedEx Supply Chain, she played a crucial role in their downtown Memphis expansion. Alongside her financial expertise, Kimel is a versatile talent as a producer-writer-director, with a deep-rooted passion for creative endeavors since childhood.   Kimel's notable accomplishments include producing the feature film "Life Ain't Like the Movies," currently available on Amazon and the Tubi networks. She is also attached as a producer for the upcoming film "The Pact," scheduled to commence production in 2023.   Beyond her prowess as a producer, Kimel is an accomplished writer who has penned several scripts. Additionally, she made her directorial debut with the short film "Something's Off," which gained acceptance into nine esteemed film festivals. Committed to empowering communities, Kimel served as a mentor through the Indie Memphis Crew Up program in 2022, guiding aspiring students as they created their first short film, "Amorphous."   Kimel is an active member of various organizations. She takes pride in her involvement with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Women of Color Unite, Women of Color Filmmakers, and her role on the UTK Law Alumni Council. Erik Jambor is executive director of Indie Memphis. One of the city's core arts institutions, Indie Memphis connects and inspires indie filmmakers and film-lovers through the unique creative landscape that is the home of the Blues and the birthplace of Rock 'n' Roll. In this episode Erik takes us behind the scenes, shares his passion for film creation, how he started a festival in Birmingham that continues today, the selection process for films, and how he became involved with Indie Memphis back in 1998. You'll hear previews for films coming to this year's festival, get the low down on other film initiatives that Indie Memphis takes part in, and why Erik's first films had Jawas in them.
