Isaiah 24:4–10 (Listen) 4   The earth mourns and withers;    the world languishes and withers;    the highest people of the earth languish.5   The earth lies defiled    under its inhabitants;  for they have transgressed the laws,    violated the statutes,    broken the everlasting covenant.6   Therefore a curse devours the earth,    and its inhabitants suffer for their guilt;  therefore the inhabitants of the earth are scorched,    and few men are left.7   The wine mourns,    the vine languishes,    all the merry-hearted sigh.8   The mirth of the tambourines is stilled,    the noise of the jubilant has ceased,    the mirth of the lyre is stilled.9   No more do they drink wine with singing;    strong drink is bitter to those who drink it.10   The wasted city is broken down;    every house is shut up so that none can enter. (ESV)Isaiah 25:1–9 (Listen) God Will Swallow Up Death Forever 25:1   O LORD, you are my God;    I will exalt you; I will praise your name,  for you have done wonderful things,    plans formed of old, faithful and sure.2   For you have made the city a heap,    the fortified city a ruin;  the foreigners' palace is a city no more;    it will never be rebuilt.3   Therefore strong peoples will glorify you;    cities of ruthless nations will fear you.4   For you have been a stronghold to the poor,    a stronghold to the needy in his distress,    a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat;  for the breath of the ruthless is like a storm against a wall,5     like heat in a dry place.  You subdue the noise of the foreigners;    as heat by the shade of a cloud,    so the song of the ruthless is put down. 6   On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples    a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine,    of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined.7   And he will swallow up on this mountain    the covering that is cast over all peoples,    the veil that is spread over all nations.8     He will swallow up death forever;  and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces,    and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth,    for the LORD has spoken.9   It will be said on that day,    “Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us.    This is the LORD; we have waited for him;    let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.” (ESV)

Sermons from Redeemer Community Church

Isaiah 10:20–27 (Listen) The Remnant of Israel Will Return 20 In that day the remnant of Israel and the survivors of the house of Jacob will no more lean on him who struck them, but will lean on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. 21 A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God. 22 For though your people Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will return. Destruction is decreed, overflowing with righteousness. 23 For the Lord GOD of hosts will make a full end, as decreed, in the midst of all the earth. 24 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD of hosts: “O my people, who dwell in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrians when they strike with the rod and lift up their staff against you as the Egyptians did. 25 For in a very little while my fury will come to an end, and my anger will be directed to their destruction. 26 And the LORD of hosts will wield against them a whip, as when he struck Midian at the rock of Oreb. And his staff will be over the sea, and he will lift it as he did in Egypt. 27 And in that day his burden will depart from your shoulder, and his yoke from your neck; and the yoke will be broken because of the fat.”1 Footnotes [1] 10:27 The meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain (ESV)Isaiah 10:33–34 (Listen) 33   Behold, the Lord GOD of hosts    will lop the boughs with terrifying power;  the great in height will be hewn down,    and the lofty will be brought low.34   He will cut down the thickets of the forest with an axe,    and Lebanon will fall by the Majestic One. (ESV)Isaiah 11:1–11 (Listen) The Righteous Reign of the Branch 11:1   There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse,    and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.2   And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him,    the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,    the Spirit of counsel and might,    the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.3   And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD.  He shall not judge by what his eyes see,    or decide disputes by what his ears hear,4   but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,    and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;  and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,    and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.5   Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist,    and faithfulness the belt of his loins. 6   The wolf shall dwell with the lamb,    and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat,  and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together;    and a little child shall lead them.7   The cow and the bear shall graze;    their young shall lie down together;    and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.8   The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra,    and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder's den.9   They shall not hurt or destroy    in all my holy mountain;  for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD    as the waters cover the sea. 10 In that day the root ...

Ready to take things to the next level? In this message, Pastor Jamie Nunnally shares how focusing on worship can help you level up in your spiritual growth.Worship is devotion expressed. The word used in Greek literally means "to kiss the hand, in token of reverence". Worship is doing something that honors God and demonstrates your love and devotion for Him.Attention – Affection - ActionIf you're doing nothing, you're not worshipping. We are wired for worship. You will worship someone or something. You might as well choose for yourself who you worship, and not allow your devotion to be hijacked by current culture. Why do we use music?God has chosen music as a means of spiritual communication. There is spiritual information in songs. If its true in the positive, then its true in the negative. Music by itself is not worship, it's the vehicle that can take your heart into worship.2 Kings 3:15 ESV Music can usher in the presence of God.2 Chronicles 5:13-14 NLT Music is an incredible gift from God. It captures and releases emotion. Music carries spiritual messages. Worship should be done wholeheartedly, not halfheartedly.Psalm 86:12 ESV Isaiah 29:13 NIVOur worship service shouldn't just be lip service. Watching people worship God is not the same as worshipping God. Worship should be done in spirit and in truth.John 4:23 "But the time is coming—indeed it's here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way."Worshipping in spirit and truth is without pretense, with authenticity, honesty, and sincerity. Come to God as you really are. Of the 150 Psalms, 42 are "laments" where the author is struggling with life and is asking tough questions. Some are even "imprecatory."We try to fake it with people, but don't try to fake it with God. He heard you think up that lie in your head. Worship should be a sacrifice.Romans 12:1 NIVWhether we're singing a song or saying no to sin, our obedience is an act of worship. Don't give God something that doesn't cost you. True worship will cost you your comfort, your dignity, your fear. Don't give God your leftover worship.  Worship is done many ways, and one doesn't replace the others.Ephesians 5:18b-19 ...be filled with the Holy Spirit, 19 singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. Two main divisions here:1. Corporate worship (done in a group)Psalms: scripture Hymns: church songs that people knowSpiritual songs: new songs from the Spirit 2. Personal worship (done in private)Making music in your hearts "Worship is simply giving God His breath back." – Louie Giglio Are you using worship to level up?

Scripture: Romans 14:10-12 Key Takeaways: “On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.” ― Nicene Creed, 325 AD John 5:22-24 (ESV) + Make sure you're ready to stand before Jesus. Romans 10:9-13 (ESV) Isaiah 45:22–24 (NIV) + Make every effort to help people confidently stand before Jesus. Oh, my brothers and sisters in Christ, if sinners will be damned, at least let them leap to hell over our bodies; and if they will perish, let them perish with our arms about their knees, imploring them to stay, and not madly to destroy themselves. If hell must be filled, at least let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go there unwarned and unprayed for. ― Charles Spurgeon + Our Vison: Helping People & Places Encounter Jesus “There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations - these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub and exploit - immortal horrors or everlasting splendors. This does not mean that we are to be perpetually solemn. We must play. But our merriment must be of that kind (and it is, in fact, the merriest kind) which exists between people who have, from the outset, taken each other seriously - no flippancy, no superiority, no presumption.” ― C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory + Make honoring Jesus the highest aim of your life. 2 Corinthians 5:9-10 (ESV) Colossians 1:9-10 (ESV)

John 14:1-6: “Let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And when I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me.” Deuteronomy 5:32: You shall walk in all the way which the Lord your God has commanded you. (ESV) Isaiah 30:21: Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left. Isaiah 35:8: The prophet says, “a highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way, the unclean shall not pass over it.” Jeremiah 6:16: Thus says the Lord, “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask the ancient paths where the good way is, and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.” John 13:15: For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. John 14:9: He who has seen me has seen the Father. Hebrews 1:3: (Jesus) is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature. But while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. Isaiah 43:1: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name: you are mine.   Invite Him in with this episode's questions for reflection. Jesus is the way: In what situation is Jesus asking me, right now, to follow His example? Jesus is the truth: What is a concrete way I can learn a new truth about Jesus this week? Jesus is the life: What am I hoping for?   Show mentions. John Bartunek, The Better Part: A Christ-Centered Resource for Personal Prayer    “From ancient times philosophers have summed up the human condition as a quest to answer three fundamental queries: What should I do? What can I know? What can I hope for? Jesus Christ answers them all, not merely with doctrine, but with his very person.  ‘I am the way' can translate into: What should you do? Follow me! Do what I have done.  ‘I am the truth' means: What can you know? You can know everything, if only you know me. Knowing me, you know the truth; you know the secret behind the workings of the whole universe and the yearnings of the human heart.  ‘I am the life' means: What can you hope for? In me, through me, you can hope for and expect the fullness of life that you long for, even though you may not be able to put that longing into words.  “Christ is truly the living water that quenches every thirst. He is truly the light that scatters every kind of darkness. The quest of every man and woman to satisfy the heart's deepest needs is the quest to seek his face, and it leads either to Christ and the place he has prepared for us in heaven or to a dead end.” (John Bartunek, The Better Part: A Christ-Centered Resource for Personal Prayer. Hamden, CT: Circle Press, 2007, 936.)   “Unfortunately, sin has obscured our capacity to know and follow the light of truth, and indeed, as the Apostle Paul realized, it has exchanged ‘the truth about God for a lie,' (Romans 1:25). By the Incarnation, the Word of God came to bring full light to man. In this regard, the Second Vatican Council says that it is ‘only in the mystery of the Word made flesh that the mystery of man truly becomes clear.'” (Saint John Paul II, Christ Reveals Man to Himself)   Get your Isaiah 43:1 free printable. Luke 2:22–40 Jesus Presented at the Temple [22] And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord [23] (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) [24] and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” [25] Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. [26] And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. [27] And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, [28] he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, [29] “Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; [30] for my eyes have seen your salvation [31] that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, [32] a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.” [33] And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. [34] And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed [35] (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.” [36] And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin, [37] and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. [38] And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem. The Return to Nazareth [39] And when they had performed everything according to the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. [40] And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him. (ESV) Isaiah 61:10–11 [10] I will greatly rejoice in the LORD; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. [11] For as the earth brings forth its sprouts, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to sprout up before all the nations. (ESV) Isaiah 62:1–3 Zion's Coming Salvation [1] For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not be quiet, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a burning torch. [2] The nations shall see your righteousness, and all the kings your glory, and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will give. [3] You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. (ESV) Galatians 4:4–7 [4] But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, [5] to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. [6] And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” [7] So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God. (ESV)

And the word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision. 2 At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his own place. 3 The lamp of God had not yet gone out, (3am or 4am) and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was. 4 Then the Lord called Samuel, and he said, “Here I am!” 5 and ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down. 6 And the Lord called again, “Samuel!” and Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. — 1 Samuel 3v1-7 (ESV) Beware of anything that competes with loyalty to Jesus Christ. The greatest competitor of devotion to Jesus is service for Him. . . . The one aim of the call of God is the satisfaction of God, not a call to do something for Him. — Oswald Chambers Types of Calling: The General Call - For all to Repent and believe the gospel The Effectual Call - Deepen your intimacy with God The Technical Call - A specific area of vocation in the earth 8 And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. 9 Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down, and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant hears.'” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. — 1 Samuel 3v8-9 (ESV) You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. – John 15v16 (ESV) Matthew 4v18-22 (ESV) Reasons Why We Neglect The Call: We can't believe it We feel inadequate We think it's “beyond us” We assume it's going to lead to bad We're too prideful to follow We like our own way better What's in Jesus' call? 1. THE OPPORTUNITY And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. – Matthew 4v19 (ESV) 28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. – Matthew 11v28-30 (ESV) 2. THE OBJECTIVE Matthew 4v19 (ESV) Spiritual formation is not an option! The inescapable conclusion is that life itself is a process of spiritual development. The only choice we have is whether that growth moves us toward wholeness in Christ or toward an increasingly dehumanized and destructive mode of being. – Robert Mullholland Jr. Isaiah 43v1 (ESV) Isaiah 64v8 (NLT) 3. THE OUTCOME Matthew 4v19 (ESV)

Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!” Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”

In Tough Times, Remembering Jesus’ Sovereignty, Character,  Love, and Power Will Help You Focus On Jesus and Not Your Problems MESSAGE SUMMARY: Jesus will hold your hand and walk along beside you in your trials and tribulations. However, in your tough times, be careful that you do not drift away from your personal relationship with Jesus. In your times of uncertainty and fear, remember these facts: Jesus is the Lord; Jesus is Sovereign over the Universe; God the Father is the Creator of the Universe; and Jesus really cares for you as a single human occupant of this Earth. If you will remember what you have been taught about Jesus, it will help you deal with your tough life circumstances: “do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus," (Philippians 4:6-7). Remembering Jesus’ Sovereignty, character,  love, and power will help you in your times of trouble and stress.   TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that, because I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be anxious. (Philippians 4:6f). “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.”. (Philippians 4:14). SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Isaiah 35:3-4; Matthew 6:25-34; Colossians 1:11-14; Psalms 19:1-14. In this Fourth Sunday of Advent, the Focus Is More on the First Coming of Jesus: “and shall call his name Immanuel {God with Us} MESSAGE SUMMARY: Advent Sermons from Isaiah – Part 4: The King of Assyria – A Sign from the Lord Introduction to Series:  Why is important now, in this season of Advent, to look to Isaiah from so long ago? It is intellectually encouraging to see how God acted, within a strategy, to connect the human race, over time, through the coming of Jesus the Messiah. Today’s Message: In this fourth Advent sermon referencing the prophecies from Isaiah, the focus is more on the first coming of Jesus. In Isaiah 7:14, Isaiah prophesied: “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel {God with us}.”. All these Old Testament prophecies, regarding the coming of the Messiah, provide a compelling context for the Advent of Jesus and His birth. Who among us chose what family we were born into? Who among us chose the city of our birth? Who among us chose the time period in which we would be born? As we prepare for Christmas, let us remember “why Christmas” and whose birth we are celebrating. Let us praise God because of the one God has given us whose name is above all names – Immanuel, God with us. Also, remember, Advent is the period in which we wait, anticipate, and prepare for Jesus’ return. TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT. If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him! (Luke 11:13). This Second Sunday of Advent, We See God's Disappointment with His People of Israel Not Taking His Word to the Nations; Therefore, God Sent Jesus “from the lineage of David” MESSAGE SUMMARY: Advent Sermons from Isaiah – Part 2: The Stump of Jesse and the Root of the Lord Today's Message: The central theme, that begins today's teaching, is God's call of Isaiah, in Isaiah 6, in a context in which God is very disappointed in the people of Israel. The teachings today will focus on the prophecies of Isaiah that point to the coming of Jesus. In Isaiah 11:1, Isaiah prophesied that “There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.”. The “stump of Jesse” refers to Jesse's son, King David. Therefore, Isaiah's prophecy indicates that the Savior will come from the lineage of David. However, by the time of Isaiah, most of David's assembly of the tribes of Israel had been cut down – hence, a “stump”, a remnant; but the prophecy says that “a shoot from the stump of Jesse” will “come forth”. Jesus is the “shoot”. In Isaiah 11:2, Isaiah prophesied: “And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.”. When David was first anointed, by Samuel, to be King, the Spirit of the Lord came upon David; therefore, Isaiah is prophesying that the Messiah will be enveloped with God's Spirit in His life on earth and in His ministry. In Luke, Jesus, as the Messiah, claims this “Spirit of the Lord”; but, as His followers, the “Spirit of the Lord” has been passed to us on the Day of Pentecost. Remember, Advent is the period in which we wait, anticipate, and prepare for Jesus' return.   TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM A CHILD OF GOD. Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His Name, He gave the right to become children of God-- children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. (John 1:12f). SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Isaiah 6:1-13; Isaiah 11:1-2; Isaiah 4:2-5; Isaiah 11:10-12; Matthew 3:1-12; Isaiah 61:1-10; Luke 4:16-30. WEBSITE LINK TO DR. In Luke, Jesus, as the Messiah, claims this “Spirit of the Lord”; but, as His followers, the “Spirit of the Lord” has been passed to us on the Day of Pentecost. Remember, Advent is the period in which we wait, anticipate, and prepare for Jesus’ return.   TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM A CHILD OF GOD. In your tough times, be careful that you do not drift away from your personal relationship with Jesus. Jesus is the Lord. Jesus is Sovereign over the Universe, and Jesus personally cares for you. Remembering Jesus’ Sovereignty and character will help you in your times of trouble and stress.   TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that, because I am in Jesus Christ, I will live as Jesus would.     Our Advent traditions have become numerous: we cut down our tree at the Beck family farm in the shadow of Mt. Hood; we make cinnamon rolls for our neighbors; we go ice skating at the mall; I take the girls to see the Nutcracker; and we go on a hike through the snow and forest on Christmas morning. Between all of these moments, we experience the normal hustle and bustle of America drinking hot chocolate, shopping, wrapping, and many times traveling. The most revered and treasured tradition, however, is our Christmas Eve feast. This family tradition pre-dates our marriage when my wife and her mother would welcome in anyone without a family to be with and without a place to go. This meal was important to my late mother-in-law because it depicted generosity, family, and the entire message of the gospel. Our Christmas Eve meal is the most spiritual and religious moment of our entire holiday season. Mirela prepares great food from appetizers to dessert. We buy the best beer, the best wine, the best whiskey. We decorate our home and we welcome in friend, stranger, and acquaintances. I remember our first year in Portland saw us welcome a couple we met on the street searching for live music, our landlord, and friends from long ago. Each year we see a different collection, and yet each year is the same; we have a feast on the evening we celebrate God's arrival. There's hardly anything more appropriate in our worship. More than hymns, more than sermons, and even more than candles, we see God's arrival to us at a table with other people. Our Longing for the Feast Food is significantly religious. It is through food that Adam and Eve rebel. The first biblical meal is the perversion, pollution, and de-creation of all God had made. Adam's feast ushers the world into chaos. Through food, humanity enters a groaning and waiting for wholeness, restoration, and peace. Sin—everything that is unkind, unmerciful, destructive, wicked, lonely, murderous, and mortal—has its birth in that first meal. Through Advent, we weep over the consequences of Adam and Eve's meal in which they doubted God's goodness and believed God to be withholding. Advent is necessary because of the separation caused by sin. Advent is the season we observe the agony of war and hope for peace. We aspire to hope while we acknowledge our own despair. We long for love while confronting our inability to receive love from another or muster the courage to love another. The world watches for God's light, peace, joy, salvation, and love to break into our world. We wait for the abundance, blessing, and eternal life of God that overpowers our sin and cleanses us. It was through a meal creation fell apart, and it's through a meal that God is restoring all things, including us. The Arrival of the Gospel Feast You've likely never heard an Advent or Christmas sermon on Isaiah 25, but it is a deep song of arriving hope and peace to the world. On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined. And he will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken. It will be said on that day, “Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the Lord; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation. (Isaiah 25:6-9 ESV) Isaiah points us to a moment when the waiting will be over. When God will gather all people for a rich feast, an incredible celebration. It's in that gathering in that shared feast that we will see the swallowing up of death, the removal of mourning, the extinguishing of condemnation, and the tearing of the separation between God and hu...

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Isaiah+53%3A2-12&version=ESV (Isaiah 53:2-12) What's so special about Jesus? This question has been asked down through the centuries by many people, and it's still being asked today. It is asked by the person, who sees all the various faiths of the world around him, then scratches his head and asks, What makes Jesus so special from the others? It is asked by the husband whose wife insists on going to church on Sunday for worship and giving away some of their hard-earned money for the church offering. Who is this Jesus? What makes Him so special? How do you answer that question? We have to admit, He has made quite a splash in this world. I came across an article that points this out. The author, Philip Yancy, writes, “When I switched on my computer this morning, Microsoft Windows flashed the date, implicitly acknowledging that, whatever you may believe about it, the birth of Jesus was so important that it split history into two parts. Everything that has ever happened on this planet falls into the category of before Christ or after Christ. “Richard Nixon got carried away with excitement in 1969 when Apollo astronauts first landed on the moon. ‘It's the greatest day since Creation!' crowed the president, until Billy Graham solemnly reminded him of Christmas and Easter. By any measure of history Graham was right. This Galilean, who in his lifetime spoke to fewer people than would fill just one of the many stadia Graham has filled, changed the world more than any other person. He introduced a new force field into history, and now holds the allegiance of a third of all people on earth. “‘More than 1900 years later,' said H. G. Wells, ‘a historian like myself, who doesn't even call himself a Christian, finds the picture centering irresistibly around the life and character of this most significant man . . . The historian's test of an individual's greatness is ‘What did he leave to grow?' Did he start men and women to thinking along fresh lines with a vigor that persisted after him? By this test Jesus stands first.' You can gauge the size of a ship that has passed out of sight by the huge wake it leaves behind.” One has to admit, Jesus Christ has left a HUGE wake.” What makes Jesus like no other, so unique? This is what our sermon series until Holy Week is going to answer. Today, first of all, we say Jesus like no other because He was promised like no other. The entire Old Testament points to Him. God promised Him long before Jesus even entered this world of ours. We see this pointed out again and again in the Gospels, which were written about Jesus – how He fulfilled the Old Testament promises. When He began His ministry, He said in His first sermon, “The time is fulfilled! The kingdom of God is at hand,” as He pointed to Himself. In the Sermon on the Mount, He said, “I have come to fulfill the law and the prophets.” Throughout the Gospels, especially in Matthew, we hear editorials – “This happened to fulfill the prophecy of (so-and-so).” Near the end of Luke, when Jesus has been resurrected and is with His disciples, He explains how the entire Old Testament pointed to Himself. Beginning with Moses and the prophets, Jesus interpreted all the things about Himself in all the Scriptures. All of the Old Testament, you see, points to Jesus. I came across something by Pastor Timothy Keller that I thought really makes a good point here for us. “The Bible is not a series of disconnected stories. It's a single narrative pointing to one person – Jesus Christ.” Jesus is the true and better Adam who passed the test in the garden (His garden, the Garden of Gethsemane, a much tougher garden). His obedience is now imputed to us. Jesus is the true and better Abraham who answered the call of God to leave all the comfortable and familiar and go into the void not knowing wither He went . . . Jesus is the true and better Isaac who was not just offered up by his...
