LUKE 13:1-9 & PSALM 63:1-8In today's gospel passage, Jesus invites us to reconsider the ways we think about sin and repentance.
Isaiah 6:1-8In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” 4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. 5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.” 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.” 8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”
1 Peter series message 7Text: I Peter 2:1-8In this message we engage a powerful passage that teaches us to grow up into our salvation: leave things behind, mature, keep moving forward. Peter employs intriguing imagery - stones - to help us grasp extraordinary truths of our common salvation.
Gen. 49:22–26 Job 37:14–24 Mark 4:35–41 Rev. 15:1–8In this message on the attributes of God, our reflections are on the Almighty God. This is one that the Church has really emphasized in our creeds and liturgies. It's the only attribute of God that appears in all three of the ancient creeds we use: the Apostles' and Nicene both begin, “I believe in God the Father Almighty.” The Athanasian Creed says, “…the Father is almighty, the Son is almighty, the Holy Spirit is almighty..." And so many of our prayers begin with "Almighty God..." Why? We explore from Job 37.
Reading 1Isaiah 6:1-2a, 3-8In the year King Uzziah died,I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne, with the train of his garment filling the temple.Seraphim were stationed above. They cried one to the other,"Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts! All the earth is filled with his glory!"At the sound of that cry, the frame of the door shookand the house was filled with smoke. Then I said, "Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, living among a people of unclean lips;yet my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!"Then one of the seraphim flew to me,holding an ember that he had taken with tongs from the altar. He touched my mouth with it, and said,"See, now that this has touched your lips, your wickedness is removed, your sin purged."Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying,"Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?""Here I am," I said; "send me!"Reading 21 Corinthians 15:1-11 I am reminding you, brothers and sisters,of the gospel I preached to you, which you indeed received and in which you also stand.Through it you are also being saved,if you hold fast to the word I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. For I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received:that Christ died for our sinsin accordance with the Scriptures;that he was buried;that he was raised on the third dayin accordance with the Scriptures;that he appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve. After that, Christ appeared to morethan five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. After that he appeared to James, then to all the apostles.Last of all, as to one born abnormally,he appeared to me.For I am the least of the apostles, not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.But by the grace of God I am what I am,and his grace to me has not been ineffective.Indeed, I have toiled harder than all of them;not I, however, but the grace of God that is with me.Therefore, whether it be I or they,so we preach and so you believed.GospelLuke 5:1-11While the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listeningto the word of God,he was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret. He saw two boats there alongside the lake;the fishermen had disembarked and were washing their nets.Getting into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon,he asked him to put out a short distance from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. After he had finished speaking, he said to Simon,"Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch."Simon said in reply,"Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets."When they had done this, they caught a great number of fishand their nets were tearing. They signaled to their partners in the other boatto come to help them. They came and filled both boatsso that the boats were in danger of sinking. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said,"Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man."For astonishment at the catch of fish they had made seized himand all those with him,and likewise James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners of Simon.Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid;from now on you will be catching men."When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him.

1In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3All went to their own towns to be registered. 4Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. 5He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. 6While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. 7And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. 8In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: 11to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. 12This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” 13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, 14“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!” 15When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. 17When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; 18and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. 19But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. 20The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.
November 7, 2024 Today's Reading: Catechism - Table of duties: To workers of all kindsDaily Lectionary: Jeremiah 11:1-23; Jeremiah 12:1-19:15; Matthew 24:1-28To Workers of all kinds. Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever God he does, whether he is slave or free. Ephesians 6:5-8In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Are we forgetting a man in the boat? When Jesus calls James and John to leave their fishing business to follow him as Apostles, we might forget who else was in that boat (See Mark 1:16-20).Zebedee, their father, was in that boat, too. He was not called to be an Apostle. What became of him? The text tells us Zebedee was left in the boat with “the hired servants.” This was a business—there were employees, and all that entails.Jesus called Twelve men as Apostles. But other Christians were not called to be Apostles. Jesus didn't forget them. Every Christian has several vocations. Zebedee, left in the boat, had the vocation of catching fish and even of running a business with employees. And we can add to Zebedee's God-given vocations such things as father, husband, neighbor, and more. That's how Jesus takes care of us and our families in this world. He first provides the blood of redemption on the cross, forgiving our sins and cleansing our conscience. But our Lord also provides for our daily needs. He sets us in vocations, whether catching fish or building boats or many other vocations (carpenter, engineer, doctor, nurse, teacher, police officer, and many, many more you might think of). This is Jesus using our hands to provide for our neighbors. When we see how our Lord honors us by using our hands and minds and bodies to serve family and neighbor, we can then have much joy in our labor (even when that labor is difficult and not very fun), and, as the Catechism puts it, “serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men.” For Jesus loves all people and honors us by using us as His hands to serve our neighbor. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.O Lord, as you gave Zebedee to serve his neighbor by providing fish, give to us vocations to serve our neighbor according to the gifts you give us. As we serve in our various vocations of student or teacher, of sister or brother, of child or parent, and other vocations where we are employed to provide for house and home, food and drink, health and well-being of our neighbor, let us rejoice in all which you give us to do, knowing that we are your redeemed servants. Show notes #14: 3rd Epistle of JohnVerses 1, 3, 4, 8In these verses the Greek word, “alethea”, (which appears frequently in all of John's writings) should instead be printed, “Truth” since it is not one truth out of many, but is instead synonymous with Christ Jesus. In addition, early Quakers also saw this word “alethea” as not just a truth, but as in John 14:6, a clear synonymous reference to Christ Jesus as the Truth. Verses 9-10It is somewhat difficult to ascertain from this epistle exactly what was happening in John's congregation regarding the challenge Diotrophes was presenting. Regardless, John says that he will deal with the issue when he is physically present with them. Henry goes on to discuss some of the issues concerning the authorship of the five works attributed to John: the Gospel of John, the three Epistles of John and the Revelation of John. While these five are usually attributed to the same John, it should be noted that the Greek in the Book of Revelation is somewhat rougher in grammar and usage than the Greek of the Gospel of John and the Epistles of John. Regarding the Book of Revelation, it is known that there was a Roman penal colony on the Island of Patmos, the place from which John indicates he has written the revelation he has been given. (Rev. 1:9)Regarding the Gospel of John, Henry discusses some possible disconnect between the last verses of Chapter 20, and Chapter 21. It is possible Chapter 21 was added some time later. Henry plans to discuss these issues in his upcoming study of the Gospel of John. Verses 11-14 Verse 11: Righteousness should always be the role of the Christian. Verse 12: the use of the word, “Truth” (since it is synonymous to Christ Himself) should, once again, be capitalized. Henry mentions that it is remarkable these short, pithy epistles have been saved and kept to illuminate us today. Following the discussion of the two short Epistles of John there is a short discussion of the epistles of George Fox, 410 of which have been printed. Some of Fox's epistles have not yet been published. Finishing the podcast, Henry briefly revisits 1 John 5:21, “Dear friends, keep yourselves from idols.” It is Henry's opinion that John was not so much telling them to avoid actual idols in the Roman panoply of pagan idols, as that John was encouraging the congregation to keep away from anything in their lives they might make an idol, and thus become more important than Christ. Henry wonders if, perhaps, those in 1 John who are reported having left the congregation may have created idols of their own imaginations instead of trying to really seek Truth/Christ. The devotion for today, Wednesday, August 07, 2024 was written by Hardy Haberman and is narrated by Beth Wilson. Today's Words of Inspiration come from Mark 8, 1-8In those days when there was again a great crowd without anything to eat, he called his disciples and said to them, “I have compassion for the crowd because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat. If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way—and some of them have come from a great distance.” His disciples replied, ”How can one feed these people with bread here in the desert?” He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven.” Then he ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground, and he took the seven loaves, and after giving thanks he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute, and they distributed them to the crowd. They had also a few small fish, and after blessing them he ordered that these, too, should be distributed. They ate and were filled, and they took up the broken pieces left over seven baskets full. Welcome to today's episode of "The Power Of God's Whisper Podcast," where we delve into the critical importance of maintaining a responsive attitude toward the Holy Spirit's guidance. Our discussion revolves around a powerful reminder from Hebrews 3:7-8, which calls us to be attentive and receptive when we encounter the divine voice.Scripture: Our springboard for today's discussion is: "Today when you hear [the Spirit's] voice, don't harden your hearts." - HEBREWS 3:7-8In the complexities of our daily lives, it's not uncommon to encounter moments that test our willingness to follow God's lead. These scriptures encourage us not to harden our hearts but rather to remain open and sensitive to what the Spirit is saying. This passage isn't just a casual suggestion; it's a direct command that carries profound implications for how we live out our faith in real-time situations. The instruction to keep our hearts soft towards God is both a protective measure and a pathway to deeper spiritual maturity. When we harden our hearts, we not only miss out on God's wisdom and guidance but also on the peace and assurance that come from walking in alignment with His will.Steps That You Can Take:* Daily Reflection:* Start each day by reflecting on this passage from Hebrews. Consider journaling your thoughts and feelings about where you might be resisting God's voice. Ask yourself if there are areas in your life where pride, fear, or stubbornness are causing you to close off communication with God.* Practice Immediate Obedience:* Make a conscious effort to obey quickly when you sense the Spirit's promptings. Whether it's a nudge to offer kindness, step back from a harmful situation, or engage in prayer, respond promptly. This habit reinforces a pattern of soft-heartedness and builds trust in God's timely guidance.* Seek Community Feedback:* Engage with a spiritual community or a small group where you can discuss your experiences of hearing God's voice. The insights and encouragement from others can help you discern when you might be hardening your heart and offer support to remain open to God's leading. Conclusion: Keeping our hearts open to God's voice is not always easy, especially when His guidance seems difficult or inconvenient. However, the promise of spiritual growth and the assurance of being in tune with God's will are invaluable. Let's choose to soften our hearts daily, allowing God's Spirit to mold and shape us according to His purpose.A Question of the Day: Can you identify a recent situation where you felt the prompt to listen to God's voice but struggled to respond? What do you think was holding you back?Let's Pray: Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your continuous communication through the Holy Spirit. Help us to keep our hearts tender and responsive to Your voice. Teach us to recognize and cherish Your guidance, and empower us to act on it without hesitation. May our lives reflect a deep trust in Your word as we navigate each day with You. In Jesus' name, Amen.Thank you for joining us on "The Power Of God's Whisper Podcast." I writhe in pain! Oh the walls of my heart! My heart is beating wildly; I cannot keep silent, for I hear the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.20 Crash follows hard on crash; the whole land is laid waste.Suddenly my tents are laid waste, my curtains in a moment.21 How long must I see the standard and hear the sound of the trumpet?22 “For my people are foolish; they know me not;they are stupid children; they have no understanding. They are ‘wise'—in doing evil! But how to do good they know not.” Officiant: The Word of the LordPeople: Thanks be to God. Amen. John 10:1-10English Standard Version10 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.7 So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. The LessonsEzekiel 33:10-20 English Standard Version10 “And you, son of man, say to the house of Israel, Thus have you said: ‘Surely our transgressions and our sins are upon us, and we rot away because of them. How then can we live?' 11 Say to them, As I live, declares the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel?12 “And you, son of man, say to your people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him when he transgresses, and as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall by it when he turns from his wickedness, and the righteous shall not be able to live by his righteousness when he sins. 13 Though I say to the righteous that he shall surely live, yet if he trusts in his righteousness and does injustice, none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered, but in his injustice that he has done he shall die. 14 Again, though I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,' yet if he turns from his sin and does what is just and right, 15 if the wicked restores the pledge, gives back what he has taken by robbery, and walks in the statutes of life, not doing injustice, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 16 None of the sins that he has committed shall be remembered against him. He has done what is just and right; he shall surely live.17 “Yet your people say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just,' when it is their own way that is not just. 18 When the righteous turns from his righteousness and does injustice, he shall die for it. 19 And when the wicked turns from his wickedness and does what is just and right, he shall live by this. 20 Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.' Amen. John 5:30-47 English Standard Version30 “I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me. 31 If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true. 32 There is another who bears witness about me, and I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. 33 You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. 34 Not that the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. 36 But the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me. 37 And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen, 38 and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. 39 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. 41 I do not receive glory from people. 42 But I know that you do not have the love of God within you. 43 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44 How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”Officiant: The Word of the LordPeople: Thanks be to God. And the beast that I saw was like a leopard; its feet were like a bear's, and its mouth was like a lion's mouth. And to it the dragon gave his power and his throne and great authority. One of its heads seemed to have a mortal wound, but its mortal wound was healed, and the whole earth marveled as they followed the beast. And they worshiped the dragon, for he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast, and who can fight against it?”And the beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months. It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling, that is, those who dwell in heaven. Also it was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them. And authority was given it over every tribe and people and language and nation, and all who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain. Sun., Oct. 8In the Gardenwith Josh ReevesErnest Holmes said of the garden of our souls, “It may be necessary to cultivate your garden, to uproot the weeds and straighten out the rows, planting new seeds—new ideas, broader visions and deeper realizations of life.”The garden of your soul needs tending so the best fruits of your life can blossom. In the tending, you may find much to prune. But you may be surprised to recall seeds of intention planted in the past of what has grown.
Have you missed us? We are so excited to be back for Season 3 and can't wait for you to hear all the special episodes we've lined up for you!Today we kick off this season "Swinging for the Fences" as Matt and Jenn take a deep dive into the heart of surrender.Surrender, though often so challenging, is a central expression of faith to give the Lord our "Yes", let go of the things that we tend to hold on to, and embrace Him as Lord. We're not just surrendering for the sake of ourselves; we're surrendering to God and for God and for His will and for His purposes. It's for His sake."In order for Him to be our Savior, we have to stop trying to save ourselves. In order for Him to be our deliverer, we have to stop trying to deliver ourselves."Surrendering to God isn't a one-time act, but a daily process. Reflecting on their own walk with God, Matt and Jenn share personal stories and challenges, but reveal the truth that giving Him an open hand allows the Lord to satisfy our deepest desires! Discover how letting go can lead to a transformative spiritual renewal. Tune in and invite a friend! Philippians 2:5-8In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; rather, He made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!Support our mission and donate today!Open Doors listeners use opendoors15 for discount at our Philly ConferenceJoin us at one of our other Freedom in Christ conferencesCheck out Unbound and find other resourcesRelease: September 2023Music by Christian HarperArtwork by Rosemary Strohm at Command-S
ISAIAH 56:1, 6-8In today's passage, we're met with the reality of God's radical welcome for the outcast, and we're invited to consider the call to mirror that welcome in our interactions with those that are different. The church is meant to be a place of prayer for ALL people. The question for us today is: Who is an outcast to you? To whom are you called to extend God's radical welcome?
July 15, 2023Today's Reading: Introit to Pentecost 7: Psalm 103:15-19; antiphon: Psalm 103:8Daily Lectionary: Joshua 2:1-24, Acts 8:26-40The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. Psalm 103:8In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Today's text from Psalm 103 is what I typically call a “commercial passage” of Scripture. What I mean by this is that we typically see this kind of passage from Scripture plastered on t-shirts, inspirational calendars, water bottles and bumper stickers. We love it, we love the sound of it. “The Lord is merciful and gracious” Whatever that means, it means nice. But when you ponder this passage in light of yourself, you probably don't find it so “inspirational”. . We don't really use this word “mercy” or “gracious” alot today, but we like that the Lord acts this way toward us. But what about you? Have you shown mercy or compassion and understanding to those around you? Have you been the first in line to help those in need, especially those who you don't know or maybe aren't comfortable with you? Where is the mercy that God has first shown you? What about graciousness? Are you quick to be forgiving of each other? Are you ready to put the best construction on everything and show grace to those who have offended you? Where is the grace of God in you that He has first given to you?“The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love” This is a passage we all read with a collective sigh of relief. Thanks be to God He is not swift to punish me in anger for what I did in my sins. Yet how many times have you been angry? Heated anger pouring out of every vain against your parents, siblings, friends or others. Anger that is directed right at them and quickly served up. What about steadfast love? That word “steadfast” means unwavering or always firm. Scripture says “We love because He first loved us” (another commercial passage). Yet John later says “If someone says, “I love God,” and yet he hates his brother or sister, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother and sister whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.” (1 John 4). Suddenly you want to burn that t-shirt, throw the inspirational calendar away and recycle the water bottle. There are always two sides of the coin with the Scriptures, we call them Law and Gospel. This Psalm is comforting for sure, but it's not because you can somehow follow Jesus' example. Only Jesus can be merciful, gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. When you hear Psalm 103 tomorrow at church look at the cross of Jesus. On the cross of Jesus you will see HIs great mercy, grace and love. The righteous anger was poured out on Jesus fully so you would not have to endure it eternally. Rather than a cute water bottle, t-shirt or bumper sticker, wear a crucifix, put one in your car or wherever it can be seen by you and others. In Christ on the cross you see not a commercial Jesus, but a merciful, gracious, always loving Savior who pours Himself out freely so that you might be saved, but also to show mercy, grace and love to those around you, all by His blood shed for you. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Thy love and grace alone avail To blot out my transgression; The best and holiest deeds must fail To break sin's dread oppression. Before Thee none can boasting stand, But all must fear Thy strict demand And live alone by mercy. (LSB 607:2)-Pastor Kent Schaaf is Pastor at Grace Lutheran Church, Little Rock. Psalm 4 Answer Me When I Call To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. A Psalm of David. 1Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer! 2O men, how long shall my honor be turned into shame? How long will you love vain words and seek after lies? Selah 3But know that the Lord has set apart the godly for himself; the Lord hears when I call to him. 4 Be angry, and do not sin; ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. Selah 5Offer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the Lord. 6There are many who say, “Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of your face upon us, O Lord!” 7You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound. 8In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.
7/8In all those very different contexts ,one characteristic emerged as a significant predictor of success . And it wasn't social (intelligences ), wasn't good looks , physical health , and it wasn't IQ . It was grit . Grit is passion and perseverance for very long term goals . So far the best idea I've heard about building grit in kids , is something called growth (mindset ) ,this is an idea developed at sanford university by (Carol Dweck ) . And it is the belief that the ability to learn is not fixed .that it can change with your effort . Doctor (Dweck ) had shown that when kids read and learn about the brain . And how it changes and grows in response to challenge , they are must more likely to preserver when they fail. Because they don't believe that failure is permanent condition
Title: The Weapon of Non-Attachment15th Chapter: Verses 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8In the first verse, the whole world is compared to the Ashvattha tree – the tree of life. Its roots are above and the branches are below. Roots represent the origin or the source which is the Atman. From this Atman, the empirical world, which is represented by the branches and leaves, evolves and moves downward. Only the Atman is eternal – the empirical world is non-eternal.The branches and leaves represent the continuous flow of samsara (empirical world) through human desires, actions and results. The Atman, as the source, is the root. Without it, the tree collapses. So, in the midst of our daily activities, we should remember the Atman, the source of everything. The 3rd verse states that no one knows the true nature of this tree. It has no beginning and no end. One can get out of the entanglement of samsara with the strong weapon of non-attachment (asaṅga-śhastreṇa).When we do our actions without being attached, then our life becomes enjoyable. We are no longer imprisoned by the results of our actions. Mahatma Gandhi practiced Anasakti-Yoga. He led a life of action, but he was not attached to results. The 4th verse says that those who are spiritually evolved develop an inquiry into something higher – they go in the search for the transcendental. It gives them a higher purpose in life. The moment we develop this higher goal, we begin our journey to get out of the wheel of samsara. Upon reaching the goal, the transmigratory cycle comes to an end – we become one with the divine. This should be understood in the context of the law of karma and the law of incarnation. The realization of the imperfections of worldly enjoyments brings about the pursuit of something higher and transcendental. This divine discontent is called Parinama Dukha, and it is the springboard of spiritual wisdom. The ultimate purpose of human life is to transcend the empirical world and realize our true identity as the Atman. Kathopanishad explains the evolution of this quest for the transcendental with Nachiketa's story. Nachiketa asks Yama for three boons: (1) Let my father not scold me when I return (2) Teach me rituals to get to heaven and (3) Teach me the reality beyond death. Yama then teaches Nachiketa how to transcend our physical identity and realize our true nature as the Atman. The 5th verse explains the weapon of non-attachment. Essentially it says that we should do our duty with full focus but not be enslaved by desires. “Those who are detached, who are free from entanglement of worldly objects, who have a higher ideal in life, who are free from desires – they are liberated and dwell in the awareness that they are not the physical body.”To understand the 5th, 6th and 7th verse, it is important to understand the 8th verse. It says: “When this body is destroyed, the soul within is not destroyed. It leaves the body behind and acquires a new body taking with it the senses and the mind, just like the wind carries the scent away with it.”We are born with the baggage of past samskaras (tendencies) – we cannot disown them. We collect these tendencies in our Antahkarana through actions involving the senses and the mind. When the body is cremated, the physical senses are gone, but the Antahkarana is retained. It accompanies the soul when it takes a new body. In spiritual life, we are all individual travelers. Just like someone traveling in a train meets other travelers – similarly, it is an accidental meeting with our near and dear ones in this life. Our journey comes to an end when we experience and realize our true identity as the Atman.6th verse: “This Atman is neither understood nor perceived as we perceive empirical objects. It is not illuminated by the sun, the moon or the fire. It is to be realized as our own true self by turning our inquiry inward. Then we realize that we are not the physical body which comes and goes.”7th verse: “A portion of the eternal reality lives in every living being, from the amoeba to the Buddha.” The spiritual oneness of existence is emphasized in this verse. The degree of manifestation of this eternal reality depends on the purity of the person's mind. Swami Vivekananda said that the difference between an amoeba and a Buddha is only of degrees, not of kind. Buddha is like the clean mirror, in whom the presence of the lord manifests in His full effulgence.
This is a question of semantics. If I wanted to be pedantic about this I would also say its is a matter of semiotics, epistemology, and theology, but the real problem is the semantic question that we are struggling with today. So many people have defined themselves as “spiritual, but not religious” that we are driving a wedge deeper and deeper between the two modes of thinking, acting, and believing. This is a form of tribalism that does not serve the question at hand, but is very much at the heart of the issues facing people of faith. The catalyst for this post was a video by Foolish Fish about perennialism, religion, spirituality and Jesus. I need to say from the start that while I mostly agree with Denis and everything he says in this video, I cannot redeem the term Perennialism like he does, and in fact, I have similar feelings about the word Christian. If you want to see Denis' video before we proceed, here it is. I want to stress that my disagreement with it is a semantic one, but when it comes to faith, spirituality, and religion, semantics are vital. Since we cannot share experience with others, we have to have a common vocabulary or at the very least a stipulated vocabulary so we can discuss these issues and experiences.I want to enter into conversation with Denis Poisson, because I respect his position, but I do not feel as comfortable with the term Perennialism as he does. Part of this is because I prefer the term Deep Ecumenism from my own Creation Spirituality practice, and because I fear that associating with perennialism might lead people into the darker sides of that movement.I have chosen to use Denis's name rather than the channel name because I fear that the word Foolish in Foolish Fish might distract from the points I want to make and might unfairly bias my readers. I have nothing but respect for Denis and his work and I want to be as fair as I can be.Denis mentions the discussion between Dr. Justin Sledge from Esoterica and Dr Dan Attrell from The Modern Hermeticist. They discussed the Dark Side of Perennialism (part 1 and part 2). I will not rehash all, or even most of the points brought up for or against perennialism from any of these three videos and I would encourage you to watch the videos if you want to dig deeper into these issues. The Problem of LabelsIt is possible to identify with and use a label without accepting, redeeming, or apologizing for the harm done by people who have used that label. When I don't want to go into a long winded explanation of my own faith I still tell people that I am a former Roman Catholic who is still Christian, because those words give a simple explanation that is mostly true. I still have to disavow the abuses of both the Roman Catholic and the Christian Churches, but the label is still useful. When I am willing to get into it I tell people that I am a wayfarer who walks the four paths of Creation Spirituality, but that takes a lot more unpacking. Why do I prefer to call myself a wayfarer to a christian?I do not want to appear to endorse the long legacy of imperialism, slavery, misogyny, queerphobia, and harm that the institutional christian church has wrought on the world for the last two thousand years. I do not want to include myself in with the christian fascists that are doing so much harm to the country and world right now. I also see it as a way to connect with the earliest followers of Jesus who referred to the life Jesus taught as the Way.Like Denis, I see Jesus as my teacher and everything else as commentary on his teachings and not even close to being on the same level as his teachings. My disassociation with the legacy of Christianity is not a rejection of my faith or people who still call themselves christians despite all the baggage that comes with it. I don't see the word Christian as redeemable. It is soaked in too much blood and wrongdoing, and I would rather do the work Jesus called us to do than fight to redeem a word that has betrayed its own meaning. Is Perennialism redeemable? For me, no. Perennialism has a colonizing tendency baked into it by so many of its early and even recent proponents that I don't see a way to redeem it. While it is true that it does not have the bloodstained legacy that christianity does. It also doesn't have the reputation for colonizing other people's faiths that I feel it deserves. I do not want to associate with it out of concern of accidentally promoting those aspects of it to people who might adopt it unaware of its darker history.Like with christianity, my condemnation of perennialism is not a condemnation of everyone who finds meaning in it. I used to identify as a perennialist and resonate with all of the arguments Denis makes for it. If he wants to call himself a perennialist, more power to him. This is more of an argument for why I can't than why he shouldn't.The biggest problem that I have with the perennialist approach to spirituality is the innate power imbalance at the heart of its practice which I worry can misdirect, misuse, and even abuse the wisdom it is trying to hold dear.Standpoint Theory and Perennialism“Standpoint theory contends that humans produce knowledge through power relations that construct and divide social groups into dominant and nondominant categories. Experiences within those categories produce different, unequal opportunities that cultivate distinct ways of knowing and being. Nondominant group members can provide more complete knowledge about reality than dominant ones because they understand the world from both perspectives.”Brenda J. AllenPerennialism is a dominant group harvesting wisdom from a nondominant one for its own use and purposes. Whether they are approaching the nondominant from a European school of philosophy, theosophy, mystagogy, or an other religious framework, they are not coming from an indigenous or traditional point of view. In such a mode, misunderstandings, misappropriations, and outright appropriation are not only likely, but to be expected. In interacting with any faith that is not our own, this sort of dominant/nondominant framework comes into play, and must be acknowledged as a warning sign on the path.In Deep Ecumenism, we listen to and learn from those who actually live the faith and practice. We approach and pay special attention to their mode of understanding and always defer to the the understanding of those we are in conversation with since we are visiting their faith tradition and not superimposing our own. In my own practice of Qabalah, I root my practice in the western esoteric practice of the tradition that has grown up over the centuries. While I do pay attention to Jewish practitioners of Kabbalah since my practice has roots in theirs, but like many others, I make attributions clear through the spelling conventions that have grown up within the tradition. I know that my practice is not the same as the Hasidim, or other Jewish Kabbalists, and any wisdom I glean from them must be carefully collected and translated into the Qabalistic tradition I do practice. The important part of this process is to strive to understand their perspective and not to misrepresent my understanding or practice for theirs.Like I said, this is a semantic problem. In any interfaith or interspiritual practice, it is important to bring to mind the barriers that make it more difficult for us to understand or accept the wisdom of others. I was raised as a white, male, conservative, christian, capitalist, American. While I am not, and never have been male, these frameworks of understanding were embedded into my mind since birth and it can be difficult to see those biases that form the bedrock of so many of our world views. As a nonbinary person, I see both the dominant and nondominant perspectives. As a leftist, I have not forgotten the conservative framings of my youth. The same is true for my socialist/capitalist, celtic/white, wayfarer/christian frames. I do not have this with many other faiths. I did practice Buddhism for a time, and once contemplated converting to Judaism. This does mean that I have a better understanding of Buddhism than I do of Judaism, but that will always be the perspective of a convert. Through this life experience, I can see the difference of my understanding of Christianity or Buddhism than any other religion or faith. That difference in experience gives me a very different experience to these faiths that I would never acquire through merely reading these texts, or having conversations with practitioners of those faiths.Deep Ecumenism invites us to enter this kind of interspiritual mode with these traditions other than our own and recognizes the distinction of the depth of wisdom we have access to through such practices and encounters.Perennialism, as a whole, developed from a idea that to know the good is to do the good. Simply reading the texts of others can give the same understanding as the community that generated those texts. I hate to sound so defensive, but I am not saying that this is Denis' point of view or belief. He has an understanding that wisdom needs to be embodied to be attained, but Perennialism as a whole does not.Does any of this really matter?Yes and no. Do I really care if Denis or anyone else call themselves perennialist? No, especially when they distance themselves from the more harmful aspects of the tradition like he does.My biggest concern is, as always, that we do not accidentally point people in a direction that will do harm rather than good. I no longer call myself a perennialist for that reason and will continue to try to persuade people to do the same thing. The Challenge Jesus madeWhen you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Most certainly, I tell you, they have received their reward. But you, when you pray, enter into your inner room, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. In praying, don't use vain repetitions as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their much speaking. Therefore don't be like them, for your Father knows what things you need before you ask him.Matthew 6:5-8In the end, I want to encourage you like Denis did to take Jesus up on his challenge. When we connect to Spirit in the quiet places within us, we have access to so much wisdom and strength. Remember always, the One who sees in secret rewards openly what we seek in secret. Those who talk so much about their prayers and rituals receive the acclaim of their audience, and that is all.Enter your secret place and pray.Oh taste and see that Yahweh is good. Blessed is the [one] who takes refuge in him.Psalm 34:8 Get full access to Creation's Paths at www.creationspaths.com/subscribe

Series: The Power of PrayerPart 2: The Persistent WidowSermon by: Paul LawlerScripture: Luke 18:1-8In this sermon, Rev. Paul shares how to build up your heart in effective prayer. In Luke 18, Jesus shares a parable to keep us from being discouraged in prayer.Widows at this time were some of the most vulnerable people in society. They had no none to stand up for them. If the judge had feared God, he would have realized that he had a special obligation to the widow as her only line of defense. But the judge had no regard for the woman, and now, the widow had an enemy. But the widow would not give up. She kept coming. She persevered, and finally, in exhaustion, the judge did the right thing and made a judgment in her favor. Why would Jesus tell such a parable? The obvious answer is to help us pray; We face the vulnerability of losing heart. Your Savior knows you are vulnerable and can lose heart.
Christmas Day The Collect: O God, you make us glad by the yearly festival of the birth of your only Son Jesus Christ: Grant that we, who joyfully receive him as our Redeemer, may with sure confidence behold him when he comes to be our Judge; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. or this O God, you have caused this holy night to shine with the brightness of the true Light: Grant that we, who have known the mystery of that Light on earth, may also enjoy him perfectly in heaven; where with you and the Holy Spirit he lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. or this Almighty God, you have given your only-begotten Son to take our nature upon him, and to be born [this day] of a pure virgin: Grant that we, who have been born again and made your children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by your Holy Spirit; through our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom with you and the same Spirit be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. Old Testament: Isaiah 9:2-7 2The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness— on them light has shined. 3You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. 4For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. 5For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire. 6For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. Psalm: Psalm 96 1 Sing to the Lord a new song; * sing to the Lord, all the whole earth. 2 Sing to the Lord and bless his Name; * proclaim the good news of his salvation from day to day. 3 Declare his glory among the nations * and his wonders among all peoples. 4 For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; * he is more to be feared than all gods. 5 As for all the gods of the nations, they are but idols; * but it is the Lord who made the heavens. 6 Oh, the majesty and magnificence of his presence! * Oh, the power and the splendor of his sanctuary! 7 Ascribe to the Lord, you families of the peoples; * ascribe to the Lord honor and power. 8 Ascribe to the Lord the honor due his Name; * bring offerings and come into his courts. 9 Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; * let the whole earth tremble before him. 10 Tell it out among the nations: “The Lord is King! * he has made the world so firm that it cannot be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity.” 11 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea thunder and all that is in it; * let the field be joyful and all that is therein. 12 Then shall all the trees of the wood shout for joy before the Lord when he comes, * when he comes to judge the earth. 13 He will judge the world with righteousness * and the peoples with his truth. Epistle: Titus 2:11-14 11For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, 12training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and godly, 13while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. 14He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds. Gospel: Luke 2:1-14 (15-20) 1In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3All went to their own towns to be registered. 4Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. 5He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child.6While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. 7And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. 8In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.10But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: 11to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. 12This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” 13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, 14“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!” [15When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. 17When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; 18and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. 19But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. 20The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.]
First ReadingISAIAH 54:1-101"Sing, O barren one, who did not bear; break forth into singing and cry aloud, you who have not been in travail! For the children of the desolate one will be more than the children of her that is married, says the LORD. 2Enlarge the place of your tent, and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out; hold not back, lengthen your cords and strengthen your stakes. 3For you will spread abroad to the right and to the left, and your descendants will possess the nations and will people the desolate cities. 4"Fear not, for you will not be ashamed; be not confounded, for you will not be put to shame; for you will forget the shame of your youth, and the reproach of your widowhood you will remember no more. 5For your Maker is your husband, the LORD of hosts is his name; and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer, the God of the whole earth he is called. 6For the LORD has called you like a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit, like a wife of youth when she is cast off, says your God. 7For a brief moment I forsook you, but with great compassion I will gather you. 8In overflowing wrath for a moment I hid my face from you, but with everlasting love I will have compassion on you, says the LORD, your Redeemer. 9"For this is like the days of Noah to me: as I swore that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth, so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you and will not rebuke you. 10For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed, says the LORD, who has compassion on you.GospelLUKE 7:24-3024When the messengers of John had gone, he began to speak to the crowds concerning John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to behold? A reed shaken by the wind? 25What then did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in kings' courts. 26What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27This is he of whom it is written, `Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.' 28I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John; yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he." 29(When they heard this all the people and the tax collectors justified God, having been baptized with the baptism of John; 30but the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.)

Nehemiah 2:1-8In the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was before him, I took up the wine and gave it to the king. Now I had not been sad in his presence. 2 And the king said to me, “Why is your face sad, seeing you are not sick? This is nothing but sadness of the heart.” Then I was very much afraid. 3 I said to the king, “Let the king live forever! Why should not my face be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' graves, lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?” 4 Then the king said to me, “What are you requesting?” So I prayed to the God of heaven. 5 And I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, that you send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers' graves, that I may rebuild it.” 6 And the king said to me (the queen sitting beside him), “How long will you be gone, and when will you return?” So it pleased the king to send me when I had given him a time. 7 And I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, let letters be given me to the governors of the province Beyond the River, that they may let me pass through until I come to Judah, 8 and a letter to Asaph, the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the fortress of the temple, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall occupy.” And the king granted me what I asked, for the good hand of my God was upon me
Pastor begins by explaining a Latin phrased used during the Reformation: Verbum Domini Manet in Aeternum (“Word of the Lord Remains Forever”) He also talks about how the Word does remain, no matter what, and that it remains to do a purpose that matters. Mark 13:5–11 (EHV) 5Jesus began by telling them, “Be careful that no one deceives you. 6Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,' and will deceive many. 7“Whenever you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be troubled. Such things must happen, but the end is not yet. 8In fact, nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places. There will be famines. These are the beginning of birth pains. 9But be on your guard! People will hand you over to councils, and you will be beaten in synagogues. You will stand in the presence of rulers and kings for my sake as a witness to them. 10And the gospel must first be preached to all the nations. 11Whenever they arrest you and hand you over, do not worry beforehand what you should say. Say whatever is given to you in that hour, because you will not be the ones speaking; instead it will be the Holy Spirit.”

“Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance…”Matthew 3:8In other words, faith has got 'feet' - That's right! If we go to James 1:22, this is clearly what the Lord Jesus Christ is saying to us:“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” In other words, don't just tell folk that you love them, show them that you love them by your lifestyle... that you are changed. There has got to be a change in a person's life when they meet that Carpenter from Galilee, the Lord Jesus Christ. I would go so far as to say it is impossible to carry on with your lifestyle like before once you have met the Lord. When you meet Him there is heart surgery that takes place. Just like the chief tax collector, that short little man Zacchaeus, remember? He climbed up the tree so that he could see Jesus? We go to Luke 19, we will see that he was a very rich tax collector but Jesus said, “I am coming to your house today to have a meal with you.”“Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.” (Four hundred percent of anything that I have taken from anyone.)Luke 19:8Now you see, there has been a change from being chief tax collector... He was now giving his money to the poor. And what did Jesus say, What was the Lord's response? If you look at verse 9 He said: “Today salvation has come to this house…”I remember many years ago as a new Christian, Jill and I were invited to the minister's house to have Bible Study. After one or two weeks I was quite confused because this minister, Errol, wasn't very kind to me. One night when we were having tea after Bible Study I said, “Can I speak to you for a minute?” He said, “Yes.”I said, “Can I ask you a question, why are you so unkind to me?”He looked at me and he said, “Angus, I have to confess, I thought you were acting. I didn't really think that there was a change in your life because I knew about you before. I thought maybe you were coming to the Bible Study for your wife's sake.” And of course, after that, we became very close friends.Just like Paul, possibly the greatest of all apostles, even the disciples didn't trust the change in his life - They couldn't believe it. It took years before they accepted him. What about you today? I would like to pray a little prayer with you in closing this Sunday morning... Please pray this prayer after me if you feel you want to:Dear Lord,Please forgive me for so often not showing fruits worthy of repentance. Forgive me for doubting you, for giving a spirit of fear to those people round about me, Lord, for speaking negative words.Lord, please let there be a change in my life.Let the love of Christ flow from me to those around me,starting with my own family.I ask this in Jesus Name, Amen.God bless you and have a wonderful Sunday.

Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said:“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!”And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!”Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”Second Reading – Acts 2:14a, 22–36Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them, . . .“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know—this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. For David says concerning him,“‘I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken; therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope. For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption. You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’“Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says,“‘The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.’Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the third chapter. Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”
I'm so thrilled to introduce Dr. Sarah Perkins to you on The Joy of SUP Podcast!Sarah is a wildlife biologist at Cardiff University whose work focuses on wildlife diseases. She works mostly outdoors, in the field, collecting data on everything from small wild mice to (extremely large) polar bears, but no matter the size of the study animal, she's always got her eyes on the community that lives on, or in, her study species; the parasites. When not studying disease transfer in wildlife, Sarah is a keen SUP surfer and racer living on the Pembrokeshire coast. In recent years Sarah has combined her love of SUP with that of science, finding that her SUP works well as a floating laboratory for her marine research. Over the last 10 years Sarah has been carrying out research on the health of a small, remote coral reef community in Tobago. The SUP has become an important part of the research equipment used, with it not only being the form of transport to the study sites, but a platform from which to observe the reef and collect samples. Back in the UK, Sarah is an advocate for wildlife conservation, education and responsible engagement. She can frequently be spotted paddling her SUP while wearing a mask and snorkel; ready to jump off and explore the underwater world. Here is a link to the cleaner fish on Kathryn Ellen Whittey's You Tube that Sarah mentions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGysteqPDNY&list=UUhXwpcds97F259nXaPI7KWg&index=8In this episode we talk about the iNaturalist app and how we can all add to the scientific data on wildlife. THE WEEK OF MISERICORDIA DOMINI - WEDNESDAYLESSON: PSALM 85The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love. Psalm 103:8In preaching Christ, it should be made quite clear that Christ rejects no one, no matter how weak he may be, but readily accepts everyone. He comforts and strengthens His sheep, like the good shepherd that He always is.If Christ is proclaimed in this way, as He really is, the hearts of men will incline to Him of their own accord. There will be no need to use compulsion or force in bringing men to Christ. The Gospel coaxes men and makes them willing so that they get real pleasure and satisfaction in serving Christ.A confident attitude also results from all this. Men begin to love Christ so that they gladly do all that He wants them to do. Confident obedience supplements all forces and compulsion. When we come under compulsion, we render obedience only with ill-will and reluctance. God does not want this. It is all wasted effort. When I begin to realize that the Lord is dealing with me in such a friendly manner, He takes hold of my heart so that I render Him ready obedience. Pleasure and real joy of heart follow.SL 11:786 (20)PRAYER: Heavenly Father, You are always ready to pardon and forgive us our sins rather than bring us to the judgement we so richly deserve. All this You have made very clear to us in the salvation which Your own Son, Jesus Christ our Savior, accomplished for us. Amen. Editor's note: No American Edition (AE) equivalent for today's sermon excerpt exists at the time of this publication. For an alternate English translation of this sermon, see Lenker, Church Postil—Gospels, 3:17-31.
"For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully." Romans 12:4-8In this episode, we talk about the importance of serving the body of Christ out of our gifts, which builds up the body of Christ and refreshes the soul. We give three pointers of how to determine your gifts and common lies we fall in to regarding our gifts.

“Preparation for Christ”Text: Mark 1:1-8In this second week of Advent, we look at the first chapter of the Gospel of Mark. Whatever wilderness situations we find ourselves in, those are the situations that God likes to break into, and is why Jesus came into this world.
Revelation 1:8In life, we know everything has a beginning and an end. There's always a start and a finish. Pastor Ariel Marquez helps us understand how Jesus is the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and End, and how this is a wonderful truth that gives us the assurance that whatever He has started, He will always bring to completion. #DailyDevo

The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.Jeremiah 31:25 (GOD SAYS)I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint. ***DELIVERANCE-DECISION TO REST/TRUST IN GODActs 3:19Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.1 Peter 5:7Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.Romans 12:2Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.Hebrews 4:9-11Let us therefore strive to enter that rest (the Rest of God/Trusting God), so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.Ephesians 4:22-24You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.Hebrews 4:15-16For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.****GOD'S GOT YOU-DON'T WORRY ABOUT ITPsalms 37:7 Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.Philippians 4:6-7 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:12-13 I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. John 14:27 NLT (don’t worry-God’s got it)I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. Eternal Life: We can live forever in the presence of God.Revelation 21:1-8 22:1-5I am sharing the word of God in hopes of revealing great treasures to encourage believers of all eras in their faith. In the last capture of the Book of Isaiah God promised to create new heavens and a new earth that would endure forever. Isaiah 66:22In the final 2 chapters of Revelation, John begins to describe the fulfillment of that promise while focusing on God’s sovereignty. In Revelation 21:1-8, John gives a basic vision. While in 22:1-5, he describes the new Jerusalem as the ultimate Garden of Eden that, Adam and Eve could have experienced had they not sinned. Read 21:1-2With nothing to compare a new heaven and a new earth, other than the present heaven and earth, John’s visions involves God’s creation of the new heaven and earth and the old creation has disappeared because it was subjected to decay. Romans 8:19-21Vs 1 says that the sea was also gone. The. Sea was associated with chaos or the abyss and was sometimes portrayed as a roaring monster. The sea represented the source from where the beast arose to bring chaos and destruction in Revelation 13:1. The new creation will be free from all such evil. In vs 2 John is explaining that the new creation is a gift from God. In the beginning God created every thing good, and in the end God will create a new unbroken world. He explains the redemptive work of Christ through the marriage of the Lamb of God and His bride, which is the church, all those who respond to Christ message of salvation.Read vs 3-5The new heaven and the new earth is the dwelling of God’s people with the Lord God in the midst. Ever since humanity sinned, separation from God has been our greatest problem. God has repeatedly called his people to himself through the prophets, through Jesus Christ, and through the presences of the Holy Spirit. In vs 4 nothing that grieves or pains the mind can exist in the fullness of God’s dwelling among his people, therefore, no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. Read 6-8In verse 6 God restates Jesus final words on from the cross “it is finished” connecting Christ death with the assurance of eternal life. Also with the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, John portrays God as encompassing total reality and truth. He is from the beginning and the end. Revelation 7:16-17In verse 7 it says all who are victorious, meaning God’s children who preserve in life, will inherit His blessings. Our adoption is a convent relationship which certifies our privileges and responsibilities in the family of God. While verse 8 is the list of those who chose not to live in the power and authority of a saving relationship in Jesus Christ. These sins characterize people who have not experienced adoption by God. Their fate is the fiery lake.Reflection Questions:What choice have you made? Have you chose ultimate paradise with God or the fiery lake?
Where are your thoughts focused?Paul says the secret to peace - and we might add, to good mental health - is to make sure we think about..."...whatever things are true, whatever things are honourable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report: if there is any virtue and if there is any praise, think about these things."That's Philippians 4:8In fact, before this, he says we are to be anxious about nothing. Prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, couples with rejoicing in the Lord, always, is a much better way to run that wonderful computer God has given us - our mind. Get this right and the peace of God Himself - a peace that transcends above and surpasses all understanding - God's very own peace will guard our hearts and our thoughts in Christ Jesus.Having the mind of Christ enables us to sleep peacefully even when the storm that threatens to destroy us rages all around us. Once this God-kind-of-peace is established in our hearts we can speak out of our mouths what is in our hearts, "Peace! Be still!" and the storms will cease... even the wind and the waves will obey.Sharing learning and the public reading of Scripture is how I spend my life. You can say, "Thanks!" by buying me a coffee here:http://bit.ly/ThankYouLex
This is a guest sermon given by Jason Villanueva at Pax City Church in Wichita, Kansas. We explore the meaning behind the Hebrew word "hineni" and how when Yahweh called unto men to be a part of his plan, they simply responded "Here I am." We can do the same! God To Emptiness Genesis 1:1-5In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. [a] 2 Now the earth was chaos (without form) and waste (void, empty) , darkness was on the surface of the deep, and the Ruach Elohim was hovering upon the surface of the water.[b]3 Then God said, “Let there be light!” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good. So God distinguished the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness He called “night.” So there was evening and there was morning—one day.VOID - formlessness, confusion, unreality, emptinessEMPTY - an undistinguishable ruin ... without purpose. God to MosesExodus 3:1-8Now Moses was tending the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian. So he led the flock to the farthest end of the wilderness, coming to the moutain of God, Horeb. [a] 2 Then the angel of Adonai appeared to him in a flame of fire from within a bush. So he looked and saw the bush burning with fire, yet it was not consumed. 3 Moses thought, “I will go now, and see this great sight. Why is the bush not burnt?”4 When Adonai saw that he turned to look, He called to him out of the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!”So he answered, “Hineni.”5 Then He said, “Come no closer. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” 6 Moreover He said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.” So Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.7 Then Adonai said, “I have surely seen the affliction of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their slave masters, for I know their pains. 8 So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, to bring them up out of that land into a good and large land, a land flowing with milk and honey, into the place of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.God to IsaiahIsaiah 6:1-8In the year of King Uzziah’s death, I saw Adonai sitting on a throne, high and lifted up,[a] and the train of His robe filled the Temple. 2 Seraphim were standing above Him. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 One called out to another, and said:“Holy, holy, holy, is Adonai-Tzva’ot! (Lord God Almighty, Lord of Hosts, Lord of Armies) The whole earth is full of His glory.”[b]4 Then the posts of the door trembled at the voice of those who called, and the House was filled with smoke. [c] 5 Then I said:“Oy to me! For I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I am dwelling among a people of unclean lips. For my eyes have seen the King, Adonai-Tzva’ot!”6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, with a glowing coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 He touched my mouth with it and said:“Behold, this has touched your lips.Your iniquity is taken away, and your sins atoned for.”8 Then I heard the voice of Adonai saying:“Whom should I send, and who will go for Us?”So I said, “Hineni. Send me.”1 Samuel 3:1-11The Lord Speaks to SamuelNow the boy Samuel was in the service of Adonai under Eli. In those days the word of Adonai was rare—there were no visions breaking through. 2 One day, Eli was lying down in his place—now his eyes had grown dim so that he could not see, 3 and the lamp of God had not yet gone out. Samuel was lying down in Adonai’s Temple, where the ark of God was. 4 Then Adonai called, “Samuel!” So he answered, “Here I am.” 5 Then he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.”But he replied, “I didn’t call—go back to sleep.” So he went back and lay down.6 Then Adonai called Samuel yet again. So Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.”But he answered, “I didn’t call, my son—go back to sleep.” 7 Now Samuel had not experienced Adonai yet, since the word of Adonai had not yet been revealed to him.8 Adonai called Samuel again for the third time. So he got up and went to Eli, and said “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli perceived that Adonai was calling the boy.9 So Eli said to Samuel, “Go back to sleep, and if He calls you, say: ‘Speak, Adonai, for Your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went back and lay down in his place. 10 Then Adonai came and stood and called as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for Your servant is listening.”11 Then Adonai said to Samuel, “Behold, I am about to do something in Israel at which both ears of everyone that hears it will tingle.Matthew 28:18Now the eleven disciples went to the Galilee, to the mountain Yeshua had designated. 17 When they saw Him, they worshiped; but some wavered. 18 And Yeshua came up to them and spoke to them, saying, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. [c] 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, immersing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Ruach ha-Kodesh, 20 teaching them to observe all I have commanded you. And remember! I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”This is POST resurrection... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Her Bible verse for this season: “Sing, O barren woman, you who never bore a child; burst into song, shout for joy, you who were never in labor; because more are the children of the desolate woman than of her who has a husband,” says the LORD.2“Enlarge the place of your tent, stretch your tent curtains wide, do not hold back; lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes.3For you will spread out to the right and to the left; your descendants will dispossess nations and settle in their desolate cities.4“Do not be afraid; you will not suffer shame. Do not fear disgrace; you will not be humiliated. You will forget the shame of your youth and remember no more the reproach of your widowhood.5For your Maker is your husband– the LORD Almighty is his name– the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth.6The LORD will call you back as if you were a wife deserted and distressed in spirit– a wife who married young, only to be rejected,” says your God.7“For a brief moment I abandoned you, but with deep compassion I will bring you back.8In a surge of anger I hid my face from you for a moment, but with everlasting kindness I will have compassion on you,” says the LORD your Redeemer.9“To me this is like the days of Noah, when I swore that the waters of Noah would never again cover the earth. Acts 8:3-8In this message, we continue with the persecution of the early church and the dispersion of the Believers into Judaea and Samaria. They did not allow chaotic and dangerous circumstances to quench their passion for the gospel. Instead, mature ministers like Philip carried the message of Jesus Christ with them, preaching the good news to those yet graced with its divine truth.
Luke 21Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth. 2This was the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3And everyone was on his way to register for the census, each to his own city. 4Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, 5in order to register along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child. 6While they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth. 7And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.8In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. 9And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. 10But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; 11for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger." 13And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,14"Glory to God in the highest,And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased."

Arising during times of great persecution, apocalyptic literature is concerned with God’s revelation about the end time and the coming kingdom of God, when God will vindicate the righteous who have been persecuted.1“At that time Michael, the great prince, the protector of your people, shall arise. There shall be a time of anguish, such as has never occurred since nations first came into existence. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book. 2Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. 3Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.”Psalm: Psalm 16My heart is glad and my spirit rejoices; my body shall rest in hope. (Ps. 16:9)1Protect me, O God, for I take ref- | uge in you; I have said to the Lord, “You are my Lord, my good a- | bove all other.” 2All my delight is in the godly that are | in the land, upon those who are noble a- | mong the people. 3But those who run after | other gods shall have their troubles | multiplied. 4I will not pour out drink offerings | to such gods, never take their names up- | on my lips. R 5O Lord, you are my portion | and my cup; it is you who up- | hold my lot. 6My boundaries enclose a | pleasant land; indeed, I have a | rich inheritance. 7I will bless the Lord who | gives me counsel; my heart teaches me night | after night. 8I have set the Lord al- | ways before me; because God is at my right hand, I shall | not be shaken. R 9My heart, therefore, is glad, and my spir- | it rejoices; my body also shall | rest in hope. 10For you will not abandon me | to the grave, nor let your holy one | see the pit. 11You will show me the | path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy, and in your right hand are pleasures for- | evermore. RSecond Reading: Hebrews 10:11-14 [15-18] 19-25Images of worship and sacrifice are used throughout Hebrews to highlight what Christ has uniquely accomplished through his death. Because we have received forgiveness through Christ’s death, we live with sincere hearts by trusting in God’s promises and encouraging love and good works from each other.11Every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. 12But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, “he sat down at the right hand of God,” 13and since then has been waiting “until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet.” 14For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. [15And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying, 16“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds,”17he also adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”18Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.] 19Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, 20by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), 21and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, 25not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.Gospel: Mark 13:1-8In the last week of his life, Jesus warned his disciples concerning trials that were to come upon them and upon the world. He exhorts the listener: Do not be alarmed.1As [Jesus] came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!” 2Then Jesus asked him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.” 3When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, 4“Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?” 5Then Jesus began to say to them, “Beware that no one leads you astray. 6Many will come in my name and say, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. 7When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. 8For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birth pangs.”
The Names and Titles of Jesus – The King of Kings Episode 103 This series of the names and titles of Jesus will give us a more in-depth understanding of Jesus Christ our Lord. This is eleventh in the series. Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth Abraham blessed by Melchizedek 7 This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him, 2and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, the name Melchizedek means “king of righteousness”; then also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.” 3Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, resembling the Son of God, he remains a priest forever. 4Just think how great he was: Even the patriarch Abraham gave him a tenth of the plunder! 5Now the law requires the descendants of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people— that is, from their fellow Israelites—even though they also are descended from Abraham. 6This man, however, did not trace his descent from Levi, yet he collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises. 7And without doubt the lesser is blessed by the greater. 8In the one case, the tenth is collected by people who die; but in the other case, by him who is declared to be living. 9One might even say that Levi, who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham, 10because when Melchizedek met Abraham, Levi was still in the body of his ancestor Judah Genesis 49:10 “Judah, your brothers will praise you;… The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his. Israel Rejects God 1 Samuel 8 (NIV)6But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the LORD. 7And the LORD told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. 8As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. 9Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.” 1 Samuel 12:12(NIV)… you said to me, ‘No, we want a king to rule over us’—even though the LORD your God was your king. The Anointing of King David (1 Sam. 16) David was not “the” king of promise “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah ... For thus says the Lord: David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel and the house of Judah” (Jeremiah 33:14-26). “When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come forth from your body and I will establish his kingdom ... Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure before me forever” (II Samuel 7:11-16). David was not “the” king of promise Isaiah speaks of the coming son who will shoulder the government “upon the throne of David, and over his kingdom ... from this time forth and for evermore” (9:6-9) Ezekiel says that the Lord “will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David” (34:23). “My servant David shall be king over them ... forever” (Ezekiel 37:24-25). Psalm 45:6 Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of uprightness is the scepter of Your kingdom. 7You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of joy above Your fellows. Once again their King would be God. God The Son Matthew 1:1-17(NIV) This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham: Abraham--Jesse the father of King David David --Josiah the father of Jeconiah[and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon. 12After the exile to Babylon---16and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah. 17Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah. 18This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about[d]: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet[e] did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. 20But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[f] because he will save his people from their sins.” 22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”[g] (which means “God with us”). Luke 1 New International Version (NIV) God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” 29Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” Matthew 2 New International Version (NIV) 2 After Jesus from as born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi the east came to Jerusalem 2and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” 3When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: 6“‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’ Matthew 3 The Baptism of Jesus In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea 2and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” 13Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented. 16As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with Him, I am well pleased.” Jesus reveals himself as the king of the Jews “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” John1:49 Teaching Parable, Parable, Parable, Parable about the kingdom of God Demonstrating His Power as King over—Satan—nature—sickness—time and space—death. Fulfilling Prophecy—Prophecy—Prophecy--Prophecy The Coming of Zion’s King Zechariah 9 9.Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth Hey Vav Hey Yod YHVH . Hebrew language reads right to left. – – Sound, pictographs meaning, and numerical value. Yod = Means extended arm and hand. Hey = Means the breath of God, behold or reveal, Abraham – 5 for Grace, Vav = Means spike or nail. It is also the number 6 in the Hebrew alphabet meaning man and is the exact center of the Torah. Hey = Means the breath of God, behold or reveal, Abraham –or 5 for Grace, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.” 18And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Hebrews 1 8But about the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, will last forever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom. 9You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.” 1 Timothy 6 (NIV) Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you 14to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,15which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen. Revelation 3:21 King James Version (KJV) 21To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. Revelation 19 13He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. 14The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. 15Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.”[a] He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. Psalm 21 Why do the nations conspire[a]and the peoples plot in vain? 2The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the LORD and against his anointed, saying, 3“Let us break their chains and throw off their shackles.” 4The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. 5He rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying, 6“I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.” 7 I will proclaim the Lord’s decree: He said to me, “You are my son; today I have become your father. 8 Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.9 You will break them with a rod of iron; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.”10 Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. 11Serve the LORD with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling. 12Kiss his son, or he will be angry and your way will lead to your destruction, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him. Takeaways From Psalm 2 Vs. 4-9 We have a King. Greater than all Kings, God says, My King Vs. 1-3 Tells us we, as human beings hate that King. Vs. 11-12 Declares though we who have hated Him we need the King. We will never have blessedness until we serve the King and kiss The King. He is the King of the Jews (Matt. 2:2). He is the King of Israel (John 1:49). He is the King of the nations (Rev. 15:3–4). He is the King of Heaven (Dan. 4:34, 37). He is the King of righteousness (Heb. 7:1–3). Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said:“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;the whole earth is full of his glory.”The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. And I said: “Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: “Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.” Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I; send me!”Psalm 29Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name;worship the Lord in holy splendor. The voice of the Lord is over the waters;the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over mighty waters. The voice of the Lord is powerful;the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon. He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox.The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire. The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord causes the oaks to whirl, and strips the forest bare;and in his temple all say, “Glory!”The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;the Lord sits enthroned as king forever.May the Lord give strength to his people!May the Lord bless his people with peace!Romans 8:12-17So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.John 3:1-17Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God.” Jesus answered him, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, ‘You must be born from above.’ The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” Jesus answered him, “Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?“Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.“Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”
