In today's episode of The Hero of the Hour Podcast, Mark chats with Scott Dolson, Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Indiana University. Following his graduation from university, Scott worked for Tim Knight Enterprises before returning to Indiana University in December 1989. While serving as director of IU's Varsity Club in 2008, he was tapped to replace Fred Glass as IU's deputy director and chief operating officer of intercollegiate athletics. In March 2020, he was appointed President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at IU.Under Scott's leadership, IU has been at the forefront of supporting its female student-athletes and women's intercollegiate athletics. Shortly after he assumed the leadership of IU Athletics, he announced the creation of the Women's Excellence Initiative, a fundraising effort designed to enhance the intercollegiate athletic opportunities for IU's female student-athletes. In its first year, the Women's Excellence Initiative has already exceeded its original goals and has already been utilized for a number of important projects, including the renovation of the IU Women's Basketball Team Center and a foreign trip for the IU Women's Volleyball program.During the episode, they discuss the five core principles that Scott adheres to: playing by the rules, being well in mind, body and spirit, achieving academically, excelling athletically, and integrating with the university. They talk about why Indiana University is very mission-oriented, and the way in which the school defines success, and what success looks like, and then work hard and smart to make certain that success becomes a reality.Scott also explains how he tries to (with the help of his family) create health, wealth and love in his life, and how much of a struggle balance can be to maintain.Join Mark and Scott for this fascinating discussion!Enjoy! What You'll Learn in this Show:Scott's five core principles, inherited from his predecessor at the university. What it means to be a “hero” at the university. The importance of creating meaningful and effective mental health and anti-hate programs. And so much more...Resources:Indiana University AthleticsNortheast Private Client GroupMark B. Every Wednesday at 3:30 I get the opportunity to talk about where I've been eating out and highlight all the cool stuff going on in the local restaurant scene on the Glass in the Afternoon program on WGCL. The man behind the name, and host of the show, is the one and only Mike Glasscott. He was kind enough to come on camera for a change and talk about what we try to accomplish on his program, his many, many years in the restaurant industry at Old Yogis/City Grille, and his work with IU Athletics. Indiana Hoosiers hall-of-fame broadcaster Don Fischer joins us for our weekly segment of "15 Minutes with Fisch" as he and Justin Kenny this week discuss all things IU Athletics with a focus on the Hoosier Men's Basketball Team as they faced a little bit more than they expected as they got the win over Kennesaw State in their past matchup. We also talk about the NFL playoff picture as the regular season is winding down to a close. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Bears finally got their Bye Week with a matchup against the Eagles coming up on Sunday. Will they get blown out? Or will Justin Fields work his magic and keep it close? We'll talk about that next week. In the meantime, Brady thought it was a good time to re-visit with Galen Clavio, host of Crimson Cast, to talk all things IU Athletics. The soccer team lost the National Championship in heartbreaking fashion on Monday of this week. The Women's Basketball team is undefeated and the Men's team is 8-2 with a marquee matchup with Kansas on the horizon. The Football team is...well...typical Indiana Football. Give a listen and catch up with the Hoosiers!
It has been an eventful several days for IU Athletics with virtually every current athletic program prevailing in big matchups over the last several days. We cover the improbable and historic comeback win for IUFB at Michigan St. before turning our attention to the most exciting start to a basketball season in many years. Ward is on a family vacation which opened the door for the first ever replacement “Guest Host” to break down the IUBB wins against Xavier and Miami University (of Ohio) and the overall state of IU Basketball 4 games in to the season. Such an important and prestigious position could only be filled by one man. A former Big Ten Player of the Year. One of the all-time greats and a man who never has to search for an opinion…BRIAN EVANS fills in for Ward and we get his unique and surprisingly upbeat analysis of IU Basketball.Ward is back for the guest not today's episode and he is one of the most polarizing players of the last many years at Indiana University. His talent was undeniable as he single-handedly won several games for IU Basketball when the odds were stacked against him. And, he had some head-scratching plays that drove many to the brink. But behind the box scores, 3-pointers, turnovers and tattoos, there is the story of a young man who grew upon in New York, in love with the game of basketball. It started in parks with his brothers and with legends of the NYC basketball scene. It turned into playing varsity basketball in 7th and 8th grade and ultimately to a commitment to Tom Crean and Indiana University. What started as a dream scenario with huge top-5 wins quickly turned into a nightmare with injuries turning into losses, turning into more losses and ultimately to a coach being fired. This young man's story takes a turn when a new coach, Archie Miller, is brought in to run the program—and run it in a very different way. With no pre-existing relationship and faced with the prospect of sitting out a year or sticking it out at IU, this enigmatic player decided to stick it out. Building a relationship with the new coach was not an easy task nor was trying to play in a new and much more rigid system.Losses continued to pile up, personal tragedy hit, fans directed their frustration and ire at him personally. Stress continued to mount and led to some very dark times that fans barely caught a glimpse of. But this young man persevered, sought help, and by the time his Senior year was wrapping up, IU Basketball was on the verge of returning to the NCAA Tournament. And then, the global Covid pandemic hit. It robbed him and so many like him of their senior year, their graduation and for a young man dedicated to getting Indiana back to the tournament, that dream too, died. Our guest continued his basketball career internationally where he faced even more personal battles, this time with a health crisis but he has continued to persevere. He is healthy, he is playing basketball professionally and he is talking to us about it all. Our guest is DEVONTE GREEN!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

We are joined today by editor and creator, Scott Horvitz, from the new-age media company Overtime. Scott is a young professional with a variety of experience and incredible knack for creativity. After working with some high tech futuristic 360-degree Intel Technology at IU Athletics, Scott landed positions with the Saints and Pelicans, then The U before making his way to the Big Apple to join Overtime. His path to this point is filled with great lessons for anyone just starting out or trying to make it in the competitive field of sports media. We talked creative process, some of the people he draws inspiration from, and what he’s taken from each step in his career. With both of us being editors, we got a little deep at times into techniques and organization, so if you edit your own videos at all, there are some great hacks in here! Scott clearly has a passion for what he does and the creative ways to utilize technology, as is apparent in the content he puts out. He also does an amazing job at showcasing his variety of work in his showreels, so we went into his process for that, as well some other specific pieces he’s created. Though he’s only been at Overtime a short time, we got to discuss a lot of what the company is working on currently, what their focus is, and what he’s cutting specifically.Click here for show notes
