[29] A Requiem for Woodson - A Cautionary Tale in Coaching Hires

X's and Joe's

Episode 29 offers a comprehensive analysis of Mike Woodson's four-year tenure as Indiana University's basketball coach, examining the factors behind his hiring, the challenges he faced, and the broader implications for college basketball coaching searches at traditional powerhouse programs.Hosts Bob Moats and Mike Wiemuth are joined by Josh Burton of Everything College Basketball to discuss how Woodson's departure represents a cautionary tale about bringing NBA coaches without college experience to the collegiate level, while also exploring how the transfer portal era is reshaping basketball programs at all levels.Segment 1: The Challenge of NBA-to-College Coaching TransitionsNBA-to-college coaching transitions have a mixed track record (Penny Hardaway, Juwan Howard, Mike Woodson), with most struggling to adapt to the complexities of the college gameThe college coaching environment requires significantly different skills than the NBA: recruiting, player development, NIL management, and relating to much younger athletesCollege basketball demands systems that maximize less developed players, while NBA coaching often assumes elite talent that can create their own opportunitiesWoodson faced a substantial age gap (often 40+ years) with his players, creating challenges in connecting with and developing young talentThe role of a college coach as GM, recruiter, and developer requires much more multifaceted skills than NBA coaching positionsSegment 2: The Woodson Era's Strategic FailuresWoodson's offensive system remained rooted in outdated basketball philosophy, featuring two traditional bigs clogging the paint rather than adapting to modern spacing conceptsIndiana consistently ranked among the nation's worst in three-point attempt rate (321st, 350th, 351st, and 321st in his four seasons)Several talented guards (Tamar Bates, Kalib Banks, CJ Gunn) transferred away from Indiana and flourished elsewhere in systems that maximized their skillsWoodson's inability to adapt his system to modern basketball led to predictable offensive struggles against teams that employed drop coverage defenseWoodson's reliance on Trayce Jackson-Davis' individual brilliance masked tactical shortcomings early in his tenureSegment 3: Recruiting Challenges and Program DirectionWhile Woodson improved Indiana's recruiting profile compared to the Archie Miller era, he struggled to land elite guards after early success with Jalen Hood-SchifinoWoodson went 0-for-31 on top-100 guard offers after Hood-Schifino committedNotable recruiting misses including Braelon Mullens, Liam McNeely, and Boogie Fland severely limited Indiana's ceilingThe center-focused offensive style likely deterred elite guards from committing to IndianaWoodson's alleged lack of effort in recruitment (reportedly going months without contacting five-star in-state recruit Braelon Mullens) reflected broader questions about his commitment to the modern demands of college coachingSegment 4: Legacy and Lessons for Blue Blood ProgramsWoodson's tenure represents a transitional period that did leave the program in somewhat better shape than he found it (went 2-2 against Purdue after Archie Miller went 0-7)Never had a losing season, made two NCAA tournaments, and raised Indiana's recruiting profileTraditional programs like Indiana must be willing to take bold coaching risks rather than "safe" options to return to elite statusThe transfer portal era makes program rebuilding potentially faster but requires coaches who fully embrace modern basketball philosophy and recruitingIndiana and other blue blood programs risk continued decline and fan apathy if they don't adapt to the changing landscape of college basketballThis episode provides a thoughtful examination of how the transition from NBA to college coaching often fails due to fundamental differences in the required skill sets and approaches. The discussion highlights how college basketball's evolution demands coaches who can adapt to modern offensive principles, navigate the transfer portal era effectively, and fully commit to the demanding schedule of recruiting. The conversation serves as a valuable case study for athletic directors and programs considering similar hires, emphasizing the importance of selecting coaches with a deep understanding of the college game's unique dynamics rather than relying solely on professional pedigree or alumni connections.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Welcome to the latest edition of the Providence Journal's College Basketball Podcast. This is Bill Koch, sports writer for the Journal. I'm joined as always by Nick Coit, the sports director at ABC6 and the weekend co-host of Cordischi and Coit on WEEI Providence. Providence's men snapped a four-game losing streak with a rout of DePaul (2:00). The Friars can carry some good feelings into their bye week.  Brown's men evened their Ivy League record with a win at Harvard (18:00). The Bears hung on down the stretch while improving to 1-1 in conference. Bryant's men are preparing for a weekend trip to Albany (25:30). The Bulldogs are seeking a 4-0 start in America East. URI's men are in the midst of a tough-two game road swing (34:30). The Rams were blown out at St. Bonaventure and now go to Dayton -- a homecoming of sorts for Archie Miller. The Rams women grinded past Fordham and are gearing for a Sunday showdown with Saint Joseph's (49:20). They're seeking some sharpness against a fellow Atlantic 10 contender. The Friars women dropped a thriller to Georgetown this week (57:45). Providence fell in the final seconds and make a weekend trip to Butler. The Bears women suffered a first Ivy League defeat against Harvard (65:55). The Crimson offered a look at a conference tournament qualifier -- Brown has work to do while looking to reach that level. The Bulldogs women come off a bye and welcome red-hot Albany on Saturday (73:00). Bryant is 2-2 in America East and right in the thick of the race for a home game in the conference tournament. Thanks as always for listening.

Welcome to the latest Providence Journal College Basketball Podcast. This is Journal sports writer Bill Koch. I'm joined by ABC6 sports director and WEEI Providence weekend co-host Nick Coit and WPRI/Fox Providence sports director Morey Hershgordon. Brown's men staked a real claim as state champions by winning at Bryant and at the University of Rhode Island over the past week (1:45). The Bears aim to make it five straight on the road at Michigan State over the weekend. Losing to the Bears was a gut punch for the Rams (14:05), who led by 10 points late in the second half. They're absorbing some painful lessons early in a rebuild under Archie Miller. Providence took care of URI for the 10th time in the last 12 meetings and has found its offensive rhythm (25:40). The Friars have one nonconference game left against Albany before the Big East arrives. The Bulldogs (40:25) have battled off-court health problems over the past week -- best wishes to them as they enter a Friday night game with Stony Brook. It feels like ages since they won at Syracuse last weekend. Pawtucket native Isaiah Miranda made his college choice this week, and it was a power program winning out for his services (48:05). Miranda is off to North Carolina State and will be eligible immediately for second semester. Providence's women continued their strong nonconference form by taking out Brown (54:20). The Friars lost in a thriller earlier this season to URI (57:55), who hosted Education Day against Hartford on Wednesday morning and drew a good crowd of kids to the Ryan Center. Thanks for joining us as always.

It has been an eventful several days for IU Athletics with virtually every current athletic program prevailing in big matchups over the last several days. We cover the improbable and historic comeback win for IUFB at Michigan St. before turning our attention to the most exciting start to a basketball season in many years. Ward is on a family vacation which opened the door for the first ever replacement “Guest Host” to break down the IUBB wins against Xavier and Miami University (of Ohio) and the overall state of IU Basketball 4 games in to the season. Such an important and prestigious position could only be filled by one man. A former Big Ten Player of the Year. One of the all-time greats and a man who never has to search for an opinion…BRIAN EVANS fills in for Ward and we get his unique and surprisingly upbeat analysis of IU Basketball.Ward is back for the guest not today's episode and he is one of the most polarizing players of the last many years at Indiana University. His talent was undeniable as he single-handedly won several games for IU Basketball when the odds were stacked against him. And, he had some head-scratching plays that drove many to the brink. But behind the box scores, 3-pointers, turnovers and tattoos, there is the story of a young man who grew upon in New York, in love with the game of basketball. It started in parks with his brothers and with legends of the NYC basketball scene. It turned into playing varsity basketball in 7th and 8th grade and ultimately to a commitment to Tom Crean and Indiana University. What started as a dream scenario with huge top-5 wins quickly turned into a nightmare with injuries turning into losses, turning into more losses and ultimately to a coach being fired. This young man's story takes a turn when a new coach, Archie Miller, is brought in to run the program—and run it in a very different way. With no pre-existing relationship and faced with the prospect of sitting out a year or sticking it out at IU, this enigmatic player decided to stick it out. Building a relationship with the new coach was not an easy task nor was trying to play in a new and much more rigid system.Losses continued to pile up, personal tragedy hit, fans directed their frustration and ire at him personally. Stress continued to mount and led to some very dark times that fans barely caught a glimpse of. But this young man persevered, sought help, and by the time his Senior year was wrapping up, IU Basketball was on the verge of returning to the NCAA Tournament. And then, the global Covid pandemic hit. It robbed him and so many like him of their senior year, their graduation and for a young man dedicated to getting Indiana back to the tournament, that dream too, died. Our guest continued his basketball career internationally where he faced even more personal battles, this time with a health crisis but he has continued to persevere. He is healthy, he is playing basketball professionally and he is talking to us about it all. Our guest is DEVONTE GREEN!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Evil Bald Colin and I are back for an unusually fast, but easily snackable Sweet 16 edition of the podcast. We begin with a little bit of bickering about something, but what are fans for? We highlight some of our favorite games from the 1st and 2nd rounds, and Colin points something out about the 8 and 9 seeds. We then do the classic re-do for Final Four picks as we arrive at the Sweet 16, and before we go we discuss Sean and Archie Miller's return as head coaches. Ohhhhh boy Xavier, you got your guy!

The first weekend of the NCAA tournament is complete! Brad and Kevin go through the 16 teams remaining and break down their path to this point, how they match up in the second weekend, and what this deep run means for each program. They also touch heavily on a huge last week in the coaching carousel world, where Todd Golden to Florida and Matt McMahon were the big splashes but Mississippi State made an excellent hire with Chris Jans. Brad also loves Xavier's choice with Sean Miller and URI getting their hands on Archie Miller, who is back on the saddle at URI.

Coach Archie Miller, In this episode, you'll hear from Archie Miller. This SPECIAL BONUS PODCAST is simply about tips for coaches as they approach March. As we all know, we want to be playing our best basketball in March. I am very fortunate that Archie Miller would take time off his schedule to offer his thoughts on how teams can win in March. Coach Miller was named the head coach of the University of Dayton at the age of 35. He has 10 years of head coaching experience at Dayton and Indiana University. Coach Miller is no stranger to advancing in March. Coach Miller led the Dayton Flyers to post-season play five times. As a matter of fact, four of his Dayton teams won over 24 games and went to the NCAA Tournament. His 2013-2014 team went to the Elite 8. As an assistant coach, Archie Miller was no stranger to post-season play either - working for the likes of Darrin Horn (Western Kentucky), Herb Sendek (North Carolina State and Arizona State), Thad Matta (Ohio State), and Sean Miller (Arizona). Coach Archie grew up in an amazing coaching family. His dad, John, won over 650 games as a high school coach in western Pennsylvania. And his brother, Sean, had an illustrious coaching career as the Head Coach of Arizona and Xavier. Today, Archie and Sean host their own podcast called “Next Play, with the Miller Brothers." Trust me, it is a high-level basketball conversation by two amazing coaches. As you soon will hear, Archie Miller is a 365-day coach. In today's podcast, he shares details on how he built and led his Dayton basketball program. And, you'll learn these details have translated to how his teams performed in March. Finally, Coach Miller provides endless tips for coaches approaching March. Wait to hear about his thoughts on tournament related topics: how to play a team for the second or third time, how to play a team that may have beaten you already, how to prepare on short prep, and so on. And, the insights that he shares about Next Play Mentality on the court and even in life is an added bonus. Archie Miller will soon be a Head Coach again. And, I can't wait to follow his program.
