Success is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration. I was never the most talented. I was never the smartest, but I was always willing to do the work. -Alison Quandt Westgate We're on the road this week! This interview with Alison Quandt Westgate was recorded at the Costello Athletic Center at UMASS Lowell www.goriverhawks.com soon after the school's student-athletes arrived back on campus. Known to her friends and colleagues as “Q” Alison is a former women's ice hockey champion and goalie coach. Off the ice, she's made a career for herself working in college athletics, first at her alma mater #bostoncollege and now at UMASS/Lowell as the Associate Athletic Director for Student Athlete Excellence. A champion for women's sports, she's a true believer in the transforming power sports can have on a person. Born and raised just outside of Boston, Alison grew up in a household full of sports lovers. Pond hockey was the game of choice in her neighborhood full of boys, so they put her in goal. Scrappy by nature, Alison says the key ingredient to her early success as an athlete was fearlessness: “I wasn't afraid to get down and dirty, to muck it up.” A stand-out player in high school, she was recruited by Boston College and skated with the women's hockey team throughout her college experience, winning countless awards and being named the 2006 Beanpot Tournament's outstanding goaltender. Her rich experience as an athlete has been a beacon for her philosophy as she guides student-athletes: “I lead by example,” says Alison. “I will never ask anyone to do something I would not do myself. I may not be very vocal about it, but you will see me walking the walk every day.” In her role at At UMASS/Lowell Alison oversees everything that touches a student athlete's daily life. 37% of the school's population are first-generation college students. “They grind,” says Alison. “They work for every single win and there is no replacement for hard work.” For 23 minutes of athletic inspiration, just hit that download button. #sports #womensicehockey #perseverence #studentathlete

This conversation with Dr. Stephany Coakley aired in August 2022 and it is one of the most downloaded episodes of all time. So you're going to love it. I know I did.Dr. Coakley is still working at Temple University as the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Mental Health, Wellness, and Performance. Since the last time we talked she earned the designation of Fellow with the Association of Applied Sport Psychology and she was the keynote speaker for the Social Justice through Sport and Exercise Psychology Symposium where she gave a talk on “Good Trouble, Necessary Trouble: How Sport and Exercise Psychology Practitioners Can Support Athlete Activism.”Enjoy!Episode 108:On today's episode, I'm talking to certified mental performance consultant Dr. Stephany Coakley about creating your own space.Stephany works with student-athletes to develop mental health skills as the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Mental Health, Wellness and Performance at Temple University. She also works with professional athletes in the NFL, NBA, and beyond through her private practice. On the way to where she is today, Stephany developed her craft by creating her own space, like starting her private practice during grad school so she could start getting experience working with athletes. She also worked with warrior-athletes in the military to help them develop resilience. By creating her own space, she was able to gain experience, grow, and learn, and ultimately serve her higher mission to help people realize their best lives through sport. We talk about:●How Stephany came to recognize the burnout she was feeling in the early part of her career and the decision to go back to school to get her PhD.●How hard it is to break into sports and how she started her private practice to create her own space and build experience in her own way.●Stephany's personal mental health practices and the tools she encourages others to have at the ready in times of stress. You can find the show notes and more resources at https://madamathlete.comKeep an eye out for new content or let us know what you'd like to see next by following us on social:Instagram: @theMadamAthleteFacebook: @MadamAthleteTwitter: @MadamAthlete

The COVID-19 pandemic took a toll on everyone in 2020, with its effects lingering today. As with many facets of society , such as financially (both before and since the pandemic), it did even more damage to the lives and lifespans of Black and Hispanic communities.Addressing our society's disparate impacts on minority groups is the core of the mission of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs. One of the fastest-growing fields since 2020, DEI job postings increased 123% between May and September 2020. That trend carried over into the sports industry, particularly with college athletics jobs, where athletic departments have created positions earmarked for DEI on their senior staff. The WorkInSports Podcast spoke with one staff member, Dr. Christopher Brown (now commissioner of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association), during his tenure as the University of Delaware's Senior Associate Athletic Director for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. We discuss:• The effectiveness of the NFL's Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview at least one minority candidate for a head coach or coordinator position• The mission of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs• The sports industry's current level of inclusionEnjoy the full episode for Dr. Brown's full synopsis of the state of DEI in the sports industry. Howard has refuted reports connecting them to the CAA and reaffirmed their commitment to the MEAC. North Carolina A&T, Hampton, Florida A&M, and Bethune Cookman have all recently left the conference; it seemed Howard would be next. Instead, they are staying put. This is a move that could change how the conference is viewed as one of two remaining HBCU conferences along with the SWAC. The sky no longer feels like it's falling and other schools may realize that too Ryan Nettles is transferring from Alabama State. His departure is a long way from the darling he was for Alabama State just a year ago. However, one really bad season and a coaching change has led to Nettles not having the same benefit of the doubt. I believe his departure is a sign that Dee Davis, transfer from Auburn, will be the new starting QB this year. Kortne Gosha and Broderick Fobbs have landed on their feet since leaving their respective HBCUs. Gosha resigned from FAMU and has moved on to Tulane. He is now the Senior Associate Athletic Director for the university. Fobbs part ways with Grambling but stays in the area at Ruston High School. He's just a positional coach, and the lesser workload should allow him to balance coaching and family life. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!
