Last year, in episode 67, "Should Christians Watch Horror Movies," a panel discussion comprised of Seacoast family shared why watching horror films poses no personal moral conflicts, many even citing reasons why these movies can be good and informing. But today, Lynne Stroy brings a different Biblical perspective and disagrees with these perspectives. Also on today's episode is Jack Hoey, Ciarrah Lindsay, Amy Worley, and Joey Svendsen, who have their own response to this form of entertainment. After substantial pushback to last year's episode, the five of them turn to the morals of general violence in movies and discuss some unrealistic, over-the-top violence in movies like the John Wick series and whether the violence in historical movies like Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List adds value to the viewing experience.  Stay ConnectedWebsite | Facebook Discussion Page  In this episodeLynne Stroy / Instagram Jack Hoey / Instagram  Ciarrah Lindsay / Instagram Amy Worley / Instagram  Joey Svendsen / InstagramExecutive Producer: Josh SurrattProducer/Editor: Joey SvendsenSound Engineer/Editor: JT PriceSound Engineer: Katelyn VandiverMusic, including theme song: Joel T. This episode was originally recorded in July of 2016, shortly after Donald Trump became the Republican Party's presidential candidate.  Little did we know at the time of this conversation, that in 5 short months, he would be the next president of the United States of America.   [show-notes from episode 40]  We talk to non-trump supporter Jack Hoey (the father) and Trump-Supporter, Kerry Haplin about how Trump pulled off the miracle of being a frontrunner in the presidential race, we discussed his chances at winning, and what major changes are in store for America with a Trump presidency. Is he trustworthy? Could he bring a deconstruction to the ineffective politics we all have trouble believing in? Is the potential value of a Trump presidency worth the risk that comes from having a loose canon in the Oval office? Our guests have some strong opinions on all these matters.Get The B-Sides Feed  Facebook Discussion Group here.E-mail the PWNA team here.Theme Song, other Music by Stoy Prioleau (aka: Riggy Roc): Apple MusicOther music: Derek Minor. Send a text to the crew (we may read these on air)Host and producer, Joey Svendsen also hosts and produces two other podcasts, coming more from the church world:Seacoast Church's Things You Won't Hear on Sunday Podcast &The Endurance Factor Podcast Other podcasts affiliated with co-hosts of PWNA:Jed's Church & Other DrugsMatt's The Great Deconstruction

[Part 1 of this two-parter: God, People, Prayer, Mystery: People Need to Pray More]Most Christians believe God is all-loving and all-powerful, but if this is the case, why does evil exist and how does prayer fit into the equation? Part two continues the conversation with author and theologian, Thomas J. Oord, explaining a specific belief in God termed "Open Theism."  Open Theists suppose that not only is God limited in power, but for God to make people with true freewill, the future isn't knowable even to Him.  While most Christians lend no credence to this theological framework, it's yet another way in which  many Christians have attempted to reconcile human suffering with the existence of "an all-loving God."    These questions have been baffling the deepest of thinkers for thousands of years.  It's Jack Hoey, Joey Svendsen and Chip Judd with Thomas J. So many unanswerable questions on this side of heaven and so many perspectives, even on the nature of what truth is.  In an age where everything is questioned, why do so many still believe fervently in a good, loving God?  And what about those who say, “I'd love to believe in this God, but I  can't make myself believe in something."  Would unbelievers all believe, if they could see the fullness of God?  And on the subject of God, is He all-loving, all-powerful, both, neither?   Some Christians ascribe to "open theology," respectfully rejecting the notion of God's unlimited power.  Regardless of what beliefs one holds, this world, the evil done on it, and the pain felt in it, is deeply troubling.  We discuss these “not so light-hearted,” nor simple spiritual matters that have had the brightest of thinkers scratching their heads for centuries.  Part one of this episode is with our very own Jack Hoey.  Joey and Jack process  thoughts on truth, belief, unbelief, and whether unbelief is a choice.  For part two, Bruce B. Life is a roller coaster of ups and downs.  It's simply part of the human journey.  If God "works good out of all things for those who are called according to His purpose," (Romans 8:28) and one has a painful and life-altering experience, did God cause it to happen in order to bring out that good?  Can we assume all of it was a part of the original plan? What's God got to do with our day-to-day?  Pastors Roy Jacques and Julie Hiott discuss with Joey Svendsen their take on this mystery.  We also hear two stories from the Seacoast family, one in which a young girl's (now grown woman, Kristen Overcash) dreams of being an Olympic gymnast is shattered by an obscure back condition and a successful businessman (Jack Hoey) loses his business during the economic turmoil of 2008.  Did God orchestrate these losses for a greater purpose?   Were the life-changing events included in God's perfect will for these two?  Questions we can only ponder.  And that's what we do here in this episode.    Stay ConnectedWebsite | Facebook Discussion Page  In this episodeLynne Stroy, intro / InstagramJoey Svendsen, co-host / InstagramJulie Hiott, co-host / InstagramRoy Jacques, co-host / FacebookKristen Overcash / Instagram Jack Hoey / Linked inVoices in montage at beginning:Jack Hoey III, Shannon Link, Kareen Ripperda, Brian Adleman Executive Producer: Josh SurrattProducer/Editor: Joey SvendsenSound Engineer/Editor: JT PriceSound Engineer: Gabe DewalkTheme Song: Joel T. Did Jesus speak against capitalism?  Does communism lend itself to more evil, given the more control allotted to less people, and the question remains: has it ever worked in the past?  History has spoken clearly though, no manmade system can fix human greed, undo the propensity to take advantage of others,  nor stop the violence motivated often for financial gain.  Co-HostsMatt Oxley / Web  / TwitterJoey Svendsen / Instagram / Twitter / FacebookBear W/ Community Read About / Join / Raffle / Welcome PacketBear W// Community VideoSocials / Connect  Join our mailing list to keep up with everything.Join the PWNA Discussion Facebook GroupWe are on YouTube and Tik Tok.PWNAcontact@gmail.com  for correspondence.ThanksTheme song, courtesy of Derek MinorOther music originally composed by Joel Hamilton and Joel Hamilton + friends. What if in the "Genesis 1 beginning," things had already began?  What if the infamous, "In the Beginning" beginning, happens to be about  one small area, guarded by an angel (Garden of Eden).  S. Joshua Swamidass, MD, PhD,  author of The Genealogical Adam and Eve: The Surprising Science of Universal Ancestry, challenges widely-held presuppositions held about the Genesis creation story and has put his tenure on the line for being forthright with the role that his faith plays in how he sees the world.  In this episode he talks how a plain reading of Genesis  can still be supported by science.  Oh yeah, and he believes in evolution.  But according to Dr. Swamidass, humans still lack amazement for the good stuff.  How are we not more fascinated by existence in general?  Or the existence of consciousness?  He demonstrates well the ability to maintain what most of his atheist colleagues would call "good science" while still being a self-proclaimed, "Christian first, scientist second" person.  And while he's here, we also manage to talk conspiracies, AI, Mars exploration and how it's hard to get ethics out of science, especially in regards to abortion.  At top of episode, Jack Hoey and Ellen Mauro defend some very cynical comments they made on a previous episode about speaking in tongues.  Chip Judd challenges their views on a means of prayer he practices every day and claims to be why he is the man he is today.  Joshua Swamidass, MD, PhD // Twitter  Ellen Mauro Instagram Chip Judd Instagram // WebsiteJack Hoey Instagram //  TwitterJoey/PWNA Instagram and TwitterJoin us as a Patron!Join our mailing list to keep up with everything.Tip any amount $ to Venmo for a PWNA Sticker.Join the PWNA Discussion Facebook GroupPWNAcontact@gmail.com  for correspondence.Theme song, courtesy of Derek MinorOther music originally composed by  Joel Hamilton and Joel Hamilton + friends. Executive Producer of PWNApod:  Jared SvendsenSupport the show

How do they claim to practice love? Back in August of 2020, Jack Hoey III and Joey talked to the leader of Westboro Baptist, Tim Phelps.   You can listen to that episode here (part 1).  This time around, we challenge some different practices of Westboro, including their clear “double-standard” use of scripture.  Jack  amongst other things, suggests that the folks at Westboro would greatly benefit from  approaching the bible with more humility.   Tim amongst other things, points at what he'd call clear doctrinal instructions in the bible that guide the day to day of his organization.  Joey is accompanied this time by Jack Hoey (the father) who is closer in age to Tim and quite likely as studied in scripture.  Unfortunately a bit of the same result, as far as finding substantial common ground but that wasn't a surprise.  This time though, Joey did manage to ask Tim if he liked him and Jack.Join us as a Patron! So many of us evangelicals (current or former) have done it.  We thought the rapture happened, can't find our Christian loved-ones, so we call our born-again, spirit-filled grandma.  If the rapture happened, she'd be gone!  We sigh a deep relief when she answers, “Hey, sweetie.”  End times theology, the book of Revelation, the mark of the beast, the tribulation, a 1000-year reign, the Left Behind series and that “scary-ass” 70s movie they made us watch in youth group.  Author and theologian, Zach Hunt, says “not so fast, the book of Revelation is about liberation and hope.”   He shares with Jack Hoey and Joey Svendsen the content he wrote in his book, Unraptured: How End Times Theology Gets It Wrong .  Did Paul and Jesus think God was coming back in their lifetime?  How is a belief in the rapture anti-biblical?   Oh, yeah and what is it about Dolly Parton and Tom Hanks that make them both perfect candidates for the Anti-Christ.  Zach Hunt:https://twitter.com/zaackhunthttps://zackhunt.net/Jack Hoey:https://twitter.com/jackthelesserJoey/PWNA Instagram:  www.instagram.com/joeysvendsenCurrent DonorSee giving opportunity: https://donorsee.com/pwnahelpsSupport Us:Join us as a patron! https://www.patreon.com/pwnapodor leave a Venmo tip right @  https://venmo.com/joey-svendsenJoin the discussion:https://www.facebook.com/groups/PWNAtalkSocials:https://twitter.com/joeysvendsenhttps://www.facebook.com/PWNApodE-mail PWNAcontact@gmail.com for correspondence.Music on this episode courtesy of Derek Minor:  http://www.derekminor.comOther music originally composed by Joel Hamilton + friendshttps://mechanicalriver.bandcamp.com/http://embassyfreqs.com/Executive Producer of PWNApod:  Jared SvendsenSupport the show

Christianity Today released episode one of a podcast series that narrates and reflects on the rise and fall of the late Mars Hill Church in Seattle, formerly led by Pastor Mark Driscoll.  Dr. Tony Jones (former friend of Mark Driscoll), who appears on this documentary, joins us alongside Ellen Mauro (remained a part of the Mars Hill Church family until the very end) and Jack Hoey (former admirer of Mark Driscoll) to discuss the content of this new documentary series.  Are pastors with similar track records as Driscoll's, aware of the harm they are causing?  Are they hearing from God?  If not, do they believe they are?  Did anything good happen at Mars Hill Church, considering what we now know?  We reflect on these questions and propose a few more: If one is known for his charisma, should this disqualify her from leading a church?  Is evangelicalism's main vehicle entrepreneurialism?  So many people who loved and sacrificed for the church community of Mars Hill are still hurting to this day.  Many of them are still asking, “How did I not see what was really happening?”Podcast being discussed in this episode:  https://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/podcasts/rise-and-fall-of-mars-hill/Dr. Tony Jones: https://reverendhunter.com/Ellen Mauro:  https://www.instagram.com/ellenmauroJack Hoey: @jackthelesser (twitter and Instagram) Joey/PWNA Instagram:  www.instagram.com/joeysvendsenCurrent DonorSee giving opportunity: https://donorsee.com/pwnahelps Support Us: Join us as a patron! https://www.patreon.com/pwnapod or leave a Venmo tip right @  https://venmo.com/joey-svendsen Join the discussion:https://www.facebook.com/groups/PWNAtalk Socials:https://twitter.com/pwnapodhttps://twitter.com/joeysvendsenhttps://www.facebook.com/PWNApod  E-mail PWNAcontact@gmail.com for correspondence. Kicking off the episode is a quick discussion (with Chip Judd) on pastors and suicide.  Is there a correlation between the pastoral role and having mental illness? Joey reflects on his vocation and whether being a pastor is harmful to his health.  Then the “PreachersNSneakers Guy,” (we call him Vic) joins Joey and co-host Jack Hoey to discuss celebrity pastors. Did these pastors start “doing ministry” with good intentions?  How did they get completely off the tracks?  Is it immoral to preach the gospel while wearing $3000 worth of attire?  Why do people keep following celebrity pastors?   Let's just say we try to keep this episode from being a "Steven Furtick Episode." Joey, Jack and "Vic" are on the same page in three accounts.  Each loves the church, each loves these pastors who are celebrities, and all three also hate “celebrity pastor culture."Get Tyler's brand new book "PreachersNSneakers: Authenticity in an Age of For-Profit Faith and (Wannabe) Celebrities."PreachersNSneakers:https://www.instagram.com/preachersnsneakershttps://preachersnsneakers.comJack Hoey: https://twitter.com/jackthelesserJoey/PWNA Instagram:  www.instagram.com/joeysvendsenCurrent DonorSee: https://donorsee.com/pwnahelpsSupport:Join us as a patron! https://www.patreon.com/pwnapodor leave a Venmo tip right @  https://venmo.com/joey-svendsenJoin the discussion:https://www.facebook.com/groups/PWNAtalkSocials:https://twitter.com/pwnapodhttps://twitter.com/joeysvendsenhttps://www.facebook.com/PWNApodCALL 507-403-PWNA (7962):  Questions, Comments, Feedback, Pushback, frustration? So many questions about prayer and we discuss many of them on this episode. At the top of the episode, Joey, Ellen Mauro and John Mark McMillan continue their conversation about porn and today specifically we discuss how significant the difference is between seeing naked bodies and watching sexual acts. How then was he tempted in the garden? If our battle isn’t “against flesh and blood,” who’s it against? We also have a conversation about the other side of the coin: what does it say about God if we do indeed live in a world where demons hate us, want to destroy us, and God can kill them but doesn’t? Thomas Oord  (ThomasJayOord.com) wrote a book entitled “God Can’t.”  It’s an articulate  presentation of Open Theism, a belief that supposes for freewill to exist, the future is unknowable, even to God.  So if God doesn’t know the future, this would mean limitations in his power which goes against what most believe about God.  At the same time, this posture is more suitable to make sense of all the pain in this world.   It goes like this: It’s not that God allows evil, but rather because He gave us freewill, He doesn’t know the evil we’ll do and thus can’t stop it.  This is an intriguing discussion in which Jack Hoey and I try to make sense of this theology as well as poke holes in it.  Although I do not hold this view, it’s certainly not as far-fetched as it may appear at first glance.   Thomas Oord:  www.thomasjayoord.com support this podcast: https://www.patreon.com/pwnapod follow this podcast: https://www.facebook.com/PWNApod/ join the discussion: https://www.facebook.com/groups/PWNAtalk/ follow joey on T and I: @joeysvendsen

Additionally, we marvel at the wonderful community we are a part of.   There’s not too many organizations—-especially churches—-that operate with such open-handedness.  This conversation is open and honest; and unfortunately, most churches are too territorial for this type of open dialogue. This makes zero sense, given we are a collection of finite people seeking the infinite.
