[Part 1 of this two-parter: God, People, Prayer, Mystery: People Need to Pray More]Most Christians believe God is all-loving and all-powerful, but if this is the case, why does evil exist and how does prayer fit into the equation? Part two continues the conversation with author and theologian, Thomas J. Oord, explaining a specific belief in God termed "Open Theism."  Open Theists suppose that not only is God limited in power, but for God to make people with true freewill, the future isn't knowable even to Him.  While most Christians lend no credence to this theological framework, it's yet another way in which  many Christians have attempted to reconcile human suffering with the existence of "an all-loving God."    These questions have been baffling the deepest of thinkers for thousands of years.  It's Jack Hoey, Joey Svendsen and Chip Judd with Thomas J. Bible Verse of the Day | Deuteronomy 6:11 | A verse about the LORD's name https://10bibleverses.com/bible-verse-of-the-day/ Welcome to Bible verse of the day I'm Reverend Joseph Sanford coming to you on the third day of May continuing with Deuteronomy chapter 6 the retelling of the 10 Commandments. We're going to continue with verse 11 you shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord, your God, for the Lord, will not acquit anyone who miss uses the name. We all grew up with an idea of what this commandment was referring to, and frankly what we grew up with, was not correct, was good, not to curse using the name of God, what this means is, we don't use the name for ourselves or in any other way other than to honor God and so if we think that we're right about something or what we're doing as a good and holy thing, we better make sure we know it if we're going to say that it is God ordained or that God approves it or what we're doing is in the name or for the love of God People like to use the name of God to further their own well because the name of God brings power it brings authority and if we're going to assume that we have the right to just decide where God's authority should be applied we need to be really careful, let us be careful and honorable, with the name of our Lord Message brought to you by Rev. Joseph Sanford of Sanford Curriculum (Student ministry resources available on The Sunday School Store written by he and Lauren Sanford). Some organizations make a big splash when they are making a difference in our community. Others are a bit more low-key but create just as large a ripple! Today, we're talking to two of them-- Geeks on God and People Builders Consulting. Geeks on God is a word-of-mouth organization that does one thing. They refurbish laptops to give to people in need. And there is a great need for many underserved youth in our community. They take any Windows 7 or newer laptop, install a new hard drive and software set it free with a new owner along with training if needed. So, if you have an old laptop laying around, please contact me and I will put you in touch with Tim McArdle! Tim works very closely with Toni Strong-Pratt who has founded People Builders Consulting. And her signature program (soon to expand) is My Sistah's Keeper. This program is an empowerment program for adult women who need a support system to help them succeed and move from dependency to indepenency. They learn about financing, career readiness, conflict resolution and more. And upon completion, they receive (you may have guessed) a laptop from Geeks on God. So far, the program has graduated 58 women. And coming in March of 2023, a companion program--My Brother's Keeper! If you ever had a doubt that a tiny organization can have an outsized impact, this conversation will change your mind! Have a listen! September 21: Saint Matthew, Apostle and EvangelistFirst CenturyFeast; Liturgical Color: RedPatron Saint of bankers, accountants, and money changersA lover of money becomes greedy for God People leave their jobs for all sorts of reasons: more pay, better opportunity, a shorter commute. Today's saint left his job for a better boss. Matthew was at work in the city of Capernaum, a bustling town with a customs house. It was just another day, and Matthew was going about his job of collecting taxes. Nearby, Jesus was doing his job too, curing a paralyzed man. It was an ordinary day for both of them. But after performing His miracle, Jesus walked down the main street of Capernaum, saw Matthew outside of the customs house, and then...the normal day ended. Jesus said to Matthew, simply, directly, and with force, “Follow me.” And then something astonishing happened. Matthew followed Him. Fistfuls of Roman coins may have spilled from his hands, or he may have swallowed a gulp in his throat, quickly adjusted his tunic, and then scurried to walk in the small clouds of dust that puffed up behind Jesus as His sandals slapped the dry ground. In an instant, Matthew's life changed forever and always. He had become a follower, a joiner, of the most important man in the history of the world. The Gospel of Matthew nowhere mentions that it is written by a man named Matthew. But it was attributed to him very early in the life of the Church. It was compiled by 80 A.D., at the latest. Matthew's Gospel is clearly written by a Jew and for Jews. It references the Old Testament repeatedly and notes how Jesus fulfilled those ancient Scriptures. Matthew's Gospel is the only one which identifies him as a tax collector. Mark and Luke refer to him as Levi, which may have been his birth name, while Matthew (“gift of Yahweh”) was his post-conversion name. Because it begins with a genealogy, Matthew's Gospel, but not Matthew himself, is in art represented by a man or by a man's face. After his big moment in Capernaum, Matthew's name consistently appears in the Gospels' lists of Apostles, but little more is said about him, apart from a feast he hosts in honor of Jesus. It is not known where he evangelized or where or how he died. Four churches in France alone claim to have Matthew's head, implying that no one has his head.Christ passes by in every life. Everyone has their chance to say “Yes” or “No,” to stay or follow, to change or remain the same. That moment may come only once and never return. Sudden callings, and sudden conversions, are rare, but they do happen. A life is more likely to plot gradually up or down like a line on a graph than to take a sharp right angle in either direction. Matthew's life angled sharply when his personal trajectory intersected with Christ's. The moment is captured in all of its drama by the painter Caravaggio in his Calling of Saint Matthew. A broad shaft of light beams through the room from above Christ's head. His bony finger points to a well-dressed man at a table with his hands over a pile of coins. The scene unfolds not in the street but in a darkened room. Light and darkness play. Sin and virtue tussle. Past, present, and future hang in the balance. Christ seems to say, “Will you take and eat, will you go and sell, will you come and follow me?” Difficult, challenging questions. But Matthew gave the difficult, generous answer in response, and we remember him today due to that one moment.Saint Matthew, you made the right decision at the right time and so changed your life and those of millions of others who know Christ because of you. Help us to recognize when a pivot point arrives in our own life, when we must change direction, and help us to choose that direction well.

Today's guest, Jim David, shares powerful insights he gleaned from documentary interviews.  Jim David is an award-winning filmmaker and skilled storyteller. Among the recognitions of his work are two regional Emmy Awards. In 2021, his film, A Strong Finish, received numerous accolades and earned the Best Documentary Audience Choice award at the 2021 International Christian Film and Music Festival. The film was also an official nominee at the 2022 International Christian Visual Media (ICVM) Crown Awards.   Jim David cites a few examples which inspired his film and the mission to share hope for overcoming impossible crises and hardship. He refers to the Biblical stories of Job and Joseph while describing the way God strengthens us on our journey through this broken world and its trials. His interviews cover emotional and physical suffering, noting how pressing into God helped them through struggles. Jim discusses the biggest takeaways he learned from the heroic and inspiring interviews he captured for the documentary series on hope. Community What is it for me to glorify God through this? Bringing awareness of how to respond to those who go through crisis and suffering Allow some time for lament. Asking questions differs from questioning God People can grow closer to the Lord through a struggle, even though this is not the natural response we expect. David encourages audiences to discover lasting hope through the awe-inspiring faith of those who overcame unimaginable difficulties. We discuss how God remains with us in times of suffering. Jim shares how those he interviewed demonstrated mind-boggling strength in the Lord during horrific circumstances. David invites his viewers to enter into conversations about the relationship between faith and suffering. He underscores the fact that Jesus experienced intense suffering and empathizes with us when we go through pain. Christ also knows the end of the story. Jim David highlights hope as part of the framework defining our purpose. We discuss the power of our mindset and a focus on the eternal. Jim shares his personal struggle with hearing loss and how he learned to recognize the opportunity to hear the Lord's voice in the midst of it. David encourages listeners to reach out to those in crisis and make time to listen to their hearts. In this episode of Religion Today, host Martin Tanner describes how traditional Christianity believes there was a time in the beginning when God alone existed.  Nothing else, not space, matter, energy or life existed.  God created everything ex nihilo out of nothing.  In LDS theology, not just God, but all matter, energy and life, in the form of intelligence or spirit, has always existed.  Joseph Smith explained, as recorded in D&C 93:33 "[T]here is no immaterial matter."  Anything that is created can be destroyed.  Ultimately, LDS theology would say God, through eternal progression, moved from being like humans are now, through progression, into the being he is now.  In that sense, God through progression turned himself into God.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Big Question! Lk leads us with crowds through Nazareth, Capernaum, Opposition, Calling, Sermon. Centurion's faith, Widow's son: “Great prophet, God visiting his people.” Leads to John's question with revealing reflections. John is in prison for courage against Herod Antipas. He is training his own disciples. He's loves the desert, fasting. Jesus is at banquets, not fasting, etc. John told of him with fire and judgment. John knows Jesus, but he's disconcerting. Jn sends his question directly to Jesus: ‘Are you the one who is coming?' Israel's story & scripture throb in its words. An Answer in Deeds that Challenge Us to Recognize God Jes could say, ‘Yes, I am.' ‘How could you ask?' But Jes understands the question & knows the answer changes the world. He answers with actions. But even marvels must be a language to be an answer. Jes enacts words of Isaiah, Malachi. etc. Jes' deeds say God's ancient promises are here. Only the Messiah/God could do it. God's image comes to new, surprising clarity. Very disconcerting. Don't stumble! Looking for a King in the Wilderness Jes knows the crowds carry the same question/quest. They went out to John looking for a Messiah, an anointed King. Jesus pushes them to think deeply. They went into the wilderness seeking... What? A reed (Herod)? King? A prophet! John's own identity partly answered his question. He was gateway to a new era. He welcomed ordinary people, soldiers, tax collectors. Last prophet of the old, pointing to new. Pharisees rejecting John led to rejecting Jesus, refusing God's good purpose for them. John and Jesus, Different, Caricatured – Both Come from God People want God to be tidy with short clear answers. Who is coming? John came. Jesus came. Very different look, sharing the same great event, different roles. People had ready boxes for them. But what God is doing is vast, complex, real, beautiful, life-giving. You have to see it, live inside it. Wisdom & justice shine.

Jesus Christ was fully man and fully God. Our God is the One True God. Why is this? Many men wanted to be God but only one God became Man. Listen as Pastor Vlad shares the powerful message about our God becoming a man in the most vulnerable way to make a way for His people to have life. Notes: Jesus' coming was prophetically anticipated… - A virgin birth - A star out of Israel - Born in Bethlehem 1. The Bible teaches that God became a man. - God the Father said that Jesus was God - Demons said that Jesus is God - Jesus said that He is God - The Bible plainly says that Jesus is God - Jesus did the works of God - People worshiped Jesus as God 2. The Bible teaches that Jesus didn't stop being God when he became man. Philippians 2:6-7 Jesus didn't deny His divinity to put on humanity. Jesus is not God's Son in the human sense of a father and a son. To be the Son of God is to be the same nature as God. The Son of God is “of God.” 3. The Bible teaches that Jesus is the Word! John 1:1-4 Jesus is eternal - “In the beginning was the Word” Jesus is distinct yet equal to God. - “The Word was with God” Jesus is divine - “The Word was God” Jesus is a Creator - “Through Him all things were made” Jesus became human - “The Word became flesh” John 1:4 John 1:14 Jesus has and offers: 1. Life (death) 2. Light (darkness) 3. Glory (shame) 4. Grace (sin) 5. Truth (lies)

Is Traditional Church & Religion Distracting You from REAL LIFE CHANGE?!

This is a topic I've been meaning to address for awhile. However, I have recently been very convicted to share, due to an overwhelming concern we may be placing our focus, and more importantly our dependence, on something that could be ultimately hindering our growth & development in our work and lives.   The reality is that we ALL want to live amazing lives…but I believe we are relying and depending on the wrong things and are ultimately going in the opposite direction of what will allow us to experience the amazing life we envision.   Here is what I know, and believe, beyond a shadow of a doubt, because it is true…   Consistent & Close Relationship with God will make EVERY AREA of life better!   Relationship with God Will make you a better man and the man you are looking to be. Psalms 37:4 makes it very clear…   “Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart”   Very simply put…'delighting in the Lord', means to build a healthy delightful relationship with the Lord…and you can expect life to get better (aka. the desires of your heart).   However, my concern is that people are NOT seeking RELATIONSHIP because they may be distracted by religion!!   I define religion as ‘the set of rules and regulations' one must follow to be in ‘right standing'.   Example: Because I know how powerful relationship with God is…when I ask someone to describe their personal relationship with to me…they immediately reply with something related to their attendance to up church.    MY CONCERNS: People(including us men) are relying more on religion than we are relationship with God People(including us men) are missing out on the real transformative power of a close relationship with God There is a misconception, within many that believe in God, that in order to live a life of success, significance, impact, fulfillment and meaning, that it you find this outside of relationship with God Let me make this clear. When you have a consistent and close relationship with God, he becomes your… Source of strength, energy, & fulfillment (providing endurance and happiness) Secret to peak performance in your work and life (providing more productivity) Solution to any problem or challenge you face (providing peace of mind) People live like their faith is a part or aspect of their life…instead of a way of life.   Therefore, this results in… Many church goers…not a lot of Christ followers Not enough examples of real men Christ followers for other men to model after   This idea of religion and traditional church vs relationship with God, what brought to my attention as a result of my personal story during the peak of the Covid pandemic in 2020. I noticed when the churches shut down, one of 2 things happened to peoples' faith: It decreased because their faith was dependent on ‘traditional church' It increased because they learned how to build a more personal relationship with God that was NOT dependent on traditional church. I experienced #2. And the more I developed a more personal relationship with God, I saw every area of my life (family, marriage, work, business, health) improve, including my ability to handle conflict and crisis.   THE CHALLENGE: Many are depending on church more than they are God Traditionally we have associated our faith with (1)church attendance, (2)serving in the church, and (3)tithing to the church. Therefore… Church has traditionally been perceived as the place where you go to worship God Many believers view service as primarily taking place within the walls of the church Tithing is associated with being a good ‘church goer' We feel like we are doing what we need to do for the ‘faith part of our lives', by checking those 3 boxes off of the list…and therefore believe we are doing what we need to do for our faith.   Yet unfortunately, many people still feel stress, depressed, unhappy, unfulfilled, life lacking meaning, don't know our purpose, making bad decisions, can't hit our goals, etc DESPITE checking off all the boxes of faith.   I once thought this exact same way…but here is what I discovered…   We often depend on religion and traditional church to replace the relationship God is seeking with us in order to transform us. Relationship is the answer…not religion and traditional church!   Don't get me wrong...i'm not saying church is bad! However, what I am saying is that it doesn't replace the thing that actually transforms you…it doesn't replace what you are ultimately looking for and need!   Example: Imagine being dehydrated. Water is what you need…water is what will rehydrate…water is the solution. However, if someone gave you orange juice instead…it would give you hydration, and maybe even some good flavor…but it IS NOT WATER! Don't get it confused…relationship with God is the water you need for the dehydration of your spiritual life. And dehydration looks like stress, unfulfillment, vices, bad habits, etc.   Church as we know it…is supplement, not sustenance! Relationship with God is sustenance! Nothing replaces it!   MY STORY: Once I realized this…my life drastically changed! I was no longer dependent on any place, event, or deed for a connected spiritual life. I became personally responsible for my faith and building this relationship as the foundation and sustenance for my life. This translated into showing up as a great husband to my wife, father to my children, leader at work, clarity in business & life…aka REAL LIFE CHANGE!   Nothing replaces relationship with God…not even church!   Spend DAILY TIME with God that is NOT DEPENDENT on anything but you and your time with Him. Build an actual relationship…I Dare you!! Watch what happens!     If you need help, book a 1:1 Discovery Call with me at https://drbradmd.com

In the second week of the series, Adam begins by exploring these ideas:What if humans are made for power? What if humans are prone to misuse their power? What if humans have a responsibility to speak truth to power? What happens if we hold in tension the need to speak truth to power with fact that we are speaking truth to an image bearer of the Holy?Adam spends time in Genesis as well as Matthew as he discusses The Truth is in the Tension.

https://youtu.be/M4V3C7wmtzY Are you committed?                                                               Acts 18: 1-8 Paul leaves Athens and goes to Corinth Aquila with wife Priscilla are kicked out Rome by the emperor Paul goes to see these guys and since they were both tent makers, they stayed and worked together Paul is doing the usual – reasoning and debating in the synagogue every Sabbath day - Persuade Jews to turn to Christ Silas and Timothy come down – takes over and now Paul can devote himself 100% to preaching Someone stepped in to be a supporting role The Jews kept on rejecting God, and so Paul is done I have spoken the truth and if any of you get lost it's not my fault From there on, he went to the Gentiles A man named Titus Justus – A worshipper of God People come to Christ when they heard him. There was change! My attitude (selfishness or empathy) Here we see Aquila and Priscilla having been kicked out of Rome have to start a new life They have to find a new “normal” Have you ever moved from one country to another? Was it out of will or were you forced to move? Philippians 2:1-4 Therefore if there is any [a]consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, 2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Interesting Paul did not go to the native, someone who lived there a long time Sometime, the best place to be is with the people that have already experienced what you have, they know where you have been Are you committed? We have to watch out for our brothers and sisters In the last days- we will have to resolve in our hearts that it's not an individual survival but that we are willing to stand together, and that starts today 2 Timothy 3:1-5- But know this, that in the last days [a]perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, [b]unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! Are you committed to your Christian brothers and sisters so that we can endure? Don't ignore what Aquila and Priscilla did, they didn't preach the message like Paul did, but they did their part Ephesians 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. We all have an assignment. It may look different but it does matter in order to advance the kingdom Are you committed to where God has called you or are you a cry baby, Do you whine about your life so much that you can't realize that a city is about to be taken over for Christ through your household? God has allowed your situation and now He is using it for good - He turns all things good for those who love Him. Stand in place Vs 5: When Silas and Timothy arrived, Paul devoted himself to preaching full time They guys took over and started to support Paul financially We see Silas and Timothy being consistent in assisting Paul, it's not something they have started today. They are committed to supporting Paul always for the sake of the Kingdom We have to be committed to advance the Kingdom of God The story of Nehemiah, He is cup bearer, but he is faithful in what he does He hears the story about the ruin of Jerusalem – and because of the love for God and God's people, a door is open He has favor

This week Pastor Wilson talks about what he thinks is the Biblical response to the immigration and refugee problem in America. He also talks about Theodore Dalrymple's book, “Romancing Opiates”, and the greek word antichristos. Happy plodding!   Show Notes:   Immigration and Refugees: What is a biblical response to the problem of refugees? Americans have fallen under the assumption that the state cannot run out of resources We are assuming that the state is God People who want to accept every single refugee into the U.S. are forgetting that the state has limited resources   Romancing Opiates: Written by Theodore Dalrymple He argues that there is a mythology that surrounds the use of opiates in Western culture that goes back to the 1700s We have grown accustomed to thinking of drugged up artists in a romanticized way Anyone who works with down and outers should read this book   Antichristos: Rendered as antichrist Only used 4 times in the whole bible: 1 John 2:18, 2:22, 4:3 and 2 John 1:7 The word antichrist is never used in Revelations A common understanding is to see The Antichrist and The Beast as the same thing In scripture, a beast is a civil ruler, persecuting the Church (like Nero, Hitler, Stalin…). An antichrist is a false teacher from within, one infected with all the latest ideational leprosy (a soft-spoken Anglican bishop for example).
