I saw my friend the other day, asked “How are you doing?” and he said: “I'm trying to be a better parent.” What a cool answer! The quip alone speaks volumes about his desire to do the best he can, and his self-awareness as he makes his best effort to raise toddlers. We ended up having a whole conversation about parenting as he began self-reflecting and spoke about patterns from his own childhood, his desire to avoid undesirable ones and model favorable ones, and how his peers kept him in check with great effectiveness. I told him I'd email him my all-time favorite parenting article, “The Power (and Peril) of Praising Your Kids: How Not to Talk To Your Kids”, and share my favorite insights about parenting young ones, as my kids are now 26 and 24, and this conversation ended up being the inspiration for today's episode.  It doesn't matter how old your kids are—there are great takeaways for all parents in this show (as well as prospective parents) about things like overparenting and the importance of observing cultural norms and perhaps choosing to do things your way, instead of merely following others, while still acknowledging that some circumstances require a very delicate balance (like “helping” your kids with their homework or college admission essays). I also discuss the idea that we actually have less influence than we think on our kids destiny, why it is more effective to praise the effort they make, rather than the results they receive, and the importance of realizing that while we do have a distinct ability to screw our kids up, their positives and successes will largely be self-directed.   TIMESTAMPS: To learn how to parent, we look at what we learned in our own childhood….what was good and what was not so good. [00:56] It seems like kids are over-parented these days. [03:54] These days if a kid gets a B in high school, their chances of being accepted at university are slim. [07:06] Commercials during the Olympics showed different attitudes from parents regarding sports. Never give up on finding what you love. [08:56] Parents have way less influence than we think on our kids' destiny. [12:54] Give the kids opportunities and then stand back. [15:45] You do not really need to praise results. You praise effort toward improvement. [20:25] Be like your kid's traffic cop. [27:11] The kids can possibly be involved in the decision-making regarding rules and consequences. Cally Logan's new book, “The Wallflower that Bloomed” challenges societal norms that pigeonhole individuals into these predetermined roles of invisibility. With heartfelt sincerity, Cally Logan urges us to strip away the stigma associated with being an outsider, to cease judging those who prefer solitude, and, most importantly, to learn to truly see others for who they authentically are. Moreover, this captivating exploration compels us to reflect upon our own journey towards self-acceptance and self-love.    Instead of resigning ourselves to a life of isolation and judgment, we are invited to embrace the notion that we can stand proudly in our uniqueness, fully blooming into the remarkable beings we were always meant to be.    Cally and I discuss many topics from her book including: The bullly in the mirror, Refraining hurtful terms, having a healthy relationship with the past, seasonal mission statements, breaking people pleasing and more.   You can connect with Cally on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/callylogan/?hl=en Get a copy of her book on Amazon here using my affiliate link:  http://www.amazon.com/dp/1610369955/ref=nosim?tag=da2he-20

Alan Weiss' The Uncomfortable Truth

The best leaders and most successful people I've met also exemplify generosity. This is not an accident. “Generosity” means “giving or sharing,” and being liberal in so doing. It isn't primarily about money, but it is about credit, recognition, time, listening, coaching, supporting, and so forth. If it's authentic, then it's consistent, not situational. I've always thought the award winners who get on stage and thank 20 people are many times those whom the people being thanked have thought of as horrible, selfish people with whom to work. Generosity is often about hard work and sacrifice, not merely “giving.” Writing a check is easy, serving at a soup kitchen is harder, chairing a nonprofit board that's in trouble is harder still. Caitlin Clark led basketball statistics in scoring, but she was also very highly rated in assists. Mentioning someone laudably in public (and on social media) is generous, as is not mentioning negatives. Refraining from complaining, especially over minor issues is generous. We often call it “giving the benefit of the doubt.” Developing people is generous. Maya Angelou has noted that “we train animals, but we should educate people.” We shouldn't assume people are somehow “damaged” and require remedial work (which most self-help books do). We shouldn't project our personal shortcomings to others, as if they must be universal to salve our egos (this is called “projecting”). Being vulnerable and honest is generous. To admit our mistakes and fears to others is a generous act, encouraging them to feel safe doing so, and enabling them to try to help us and that we will willingly listen. We should also overlook minor flaws that may discomfort us but are trivial in the large scheme of things. I had a coaching client who told me he was annoyed when one of his customers chewed on the ice from a drink. I asked if this were somehow dysfunctional. He said it was just irksome. I suggested he just live with it and forget it. But, ungenerously, he told the client that the habit was irritating. The customer then told him to “get lost.” Refraining from holding a grudge or harboring resentment is generous, as is never taking things personally. (I didn't make a sale at this time in this place to this person. That doesn't mean the person doesn't like me or that I'm not worthy.) And remember Joseph Epstein's famous observation: “The true measure of generosity is not how much one gives but how much, after giving, one has left over.” It's a fundamental concept or philosophy about life.

Don't Attend Pro 26:4 #RTTBROS #nightlight Don't Attend Proverbs 26:4, "Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him." This verse advises us not to engage in foolish arguments or respond to a fool in a manner that mirrors their foolishness. In our lives, we often encounter situations where we are tempted to respond to foolishness with our own words or actions. However, the book of Proverbs offers us a timeless piece of wisdom in chapter 26, verse 4 - "Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him." This verse encourages us to exercise discernment and restraint when faced with foolishness, reminding us that responding in kind only draws us into the same folly. As followers of Christ, we are called to embody wisdom and grace in our interactions with others, even when faced with ignorance or foolishness. Refraining from responding to a fool according to their folly does not mean we remain silent in the face of injustice or untruth, but rather that we choose our words and actions carefully, guided by the wisdom of God. C.H. Spurgeon, the renowned preacher, once reflected on this verse, saying, "It is not needful that we should always answer a fool according to his folly, for he will despise our words; but it is well that we should never answer him in his own way, for that would be to become like him." Let us take Spurgeon's words to heart and remember that our responses to folly should be rooted in wisdom and grace, reflecting the character of our Lord. Instead of being drawn into fruitless arguments or responding with harsh words, let us seek God's guidance in how we engage with those who exhibit foolishness, always striving to emulate the wisdom and love of Christ in our interactions. May we find strength in God's wisdom to respond with grace and discernment, embodying the truth of Proverbs 26:4 in our daily lives. If a Non-Jew Touched Kosher Wine Intentionally to Make it Forbidden; The Status of Wine Looked Upon by a Non-Jew

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

The Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909), in Parashat Balak, discusses the case of a non-Jew who deliberately touches a Jew's wine for the purpose of rendering it forbidden. For example, if a non-Jew becomes angry at a Jew, and in his fury he shakes the Jew's bottle of wine so that it would become forbidden for the Jew, does the bottle of wine in fact become forbidden? The Ben Ish Hai cites different views on this issue. He notes that whereas the Rambam (Rabbi Moshe Maimonides, Spain-Egypt, 1135-1204) ruled that the wine becomes forbidden in such a case, others ruled that the wine is permissible, because the Sages did not forbid wine touched by a non-Jew under these circumstances. As for the final Halacha, the Ben Ish Hai writes that in situations of "Hefsed Meruba" – where a substantial financial loss is at stake, such as when dealing with expensive wine or a large quantity of wine – then the wine is certainly permissible and may be used for drinking or any other form of benefit. If, however, the financial loss at stake is not so substantial, then it is preferable not to use the wine. Even in such a case, the Ben Ish Hai emphasizes, the wine is permissible according to the strict Halacha and one may rely on the lenient position. He notes that this applies even if we do not know with absolute certainty that the gentile specifically intended to render the wine forbidden, but we can reasonably assume that this was his intent in light of the circumstances surrounding the incident. In the next passage, the Ben Ish Hai cites a particularly stringent ruling of Rabbi Menahem Hababli forbidding wine that a non-Jew looked upon, but did not touch. According to this view, one must ensure to keep his wine hidden or covered so that no non-Jew can look at it. Although there are people who follow this custom, according to the strict Halacha wine that a non-Jew looked at is permissible. Refraining from such wine constitutes a "Midat Hasidut" – a measure of special piety – and not an actual Halachic requirement. The Ben Ish Hai notes that Moslems, who worship the single Creator, are not considered idolaters, and there is thus no concern whatsoever in using wine that a Moslem has looked at, not even on the level of "Midat Hasidut." Although Halacha does not follow the view of Rabbi Menahem Hababli, his ruling demonstrates the severity of this prohibition against non-Jewish wine. If some authorities go so far as to forbid wine that was looked at by a non-Jew, then even if we do not accept this position, it emphasizes just how careful we must be when it comes to non-Jewish wine. Summary: If a gentile touched kosher wine with the specific intent to make it forbidden, the wine is permissible, as long as we can reasonably assume that this was his intent. Preferably, however, one should not use the wine, unless a substantial financial loss is at stake. Some people have the practice as a measure of special piety to ensure that a gentile does not even look at their wine, as there is one opinion that forbids wine that a non-Jew looked upon. This practice is not required according to the strict Halacha, but it demonstrates the severity of the prohibition against non-Jewish wine.

If you're in the mood to try something new and eccentric, you can almost always count on TikTok for inspiration. So, the idea of vabbing is inserting clean fingers into your clean vagina and dabbing your vaginal fluids onto your pressure points (wrists, neck, and behind the ears), and using it as perfume. According to Healthline, our vag fluids contain pheromones and its smell is our “sexual scent of attraction.” Who knew? Vabbing had already been written about in books prior to going viral online, but TikTok has put the idea in front of the masses. TikToker Mandy Lee was the first to bring vabbing to social media, and now more and more women are revealing stories of men falling at their feet thanks to the unconventional seduction method. Vabbing works on the theory of pheromones. Pheromone research is nothing new, and the study of human chemical communication has been widely investigated. It was once believed that all mammals – humans included – could attract a mate of the same species by secreting signals through scent. However, its role in humans remains uncertain and unproven. What are the health implications of vabbing? No matter your feelings on the subject, if you want to try vabbing, you'll need to practice good hygiene. It's important to be aware of your sexual status when it comes to sharing your bodily fluids. Let's not forget that STIs still exist. Dr. Oakley & Holly will go over some of the tips on vabbing in this episode, like: • ● Washing your hands both before and after • ● Not allowing areas you've ‘vabbed' to touch anything or anyone • ● Wiping down gym equipment before and after use • ● Refraining from vabbing if you're on your period or have an STI • ● Making sure you get checked by a professional if you think you sense an unusual or bad odor Thank you, ladies, for listening. Always feel free to ask Dr. Oakley any women's health questions at any time. Please send in your comments, questions, and suggestions for future topics at TheLadyBodPod@gmail.com.

In this episode, we dive into emotional resilience and explore a different perspective on how to navigate emotions. Piggy-backing off the previous episode, we challenge the common belief that emotional resilience is moving from negative to positive emotions. Instead, we learn that emotional resilience involves learning how to let all emotions be felt with compassion.  We discuss the importance of being with ourselves and offering self-compassion during challenging times. Feeling every emotion as it comes rather than constantly striving to feel only happiness can bring new levels of confidence. Engaging in relaxing activities is super valuable, but sometimes isn't helpful. There are moments when these strategies may not work and we find ourselves feeling sad, anxious or discouraged. At these times, a new skill set is required — the ability to surrender to these difficult emotions while having self-compassion. Throughout the episode, we emphasize the power of creating a safe and comfortable space within ourselves to navigate challenges. Rather than judging and criticizing ourselves for experiencing these challenging emotions, we encourage listeners to cultivate non-judgment and self-compassion. Three key practices are crucial to creating a safe space. Refraining from judgment, making ample space to feel, and letting go of the need to be different, are it. By embracing these practices, we not only develop a greater capacity to move through difficult emotions, but we also reduce the intensity of suffering challenges. Ultimately, this mindset shift and approach to emotional resilience can be a game changer. Let it help you navigate the ups and downs of your mission and life with grace and self-acceptance.   Website | Instagram | Facebook Get the Full Show Notes HERE Free Training for Preparing Missionaries:  Change Your Mission with this One Tool Free Video Series:  3 Tools to Help RMs in Their Transition Home Free Guide:  5 Tips to Help Any Returning Missionary Free Strategy Call:   Click Here

Parashat Nisavim- Torah Study and Repentance

Insight of the Week

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 7, 2023

In Parashat Nisavim, Moshe foresees the time when, after Beneh Yisrael are driven into exile, they will repent, and G-d will then bring them back to their land, and bless them. The Or Ha'haim (Rav Haim Ben-Attar, 1696-1743) notes that Moshe seems to speak here of three different stages of repentance. First, Moshe says, “Ve'shabta Ad Hashem Elokecha Ve'shamata Be'kolo” – “You will return to Hashem your G-d, and heed His voice” (30:2). In response, Moshe continues, Hashem will bring the people back from exile. Then, “Hashem your G-d will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring” (30:6), in response to which G-d will punish the enemy nations who had persecuted Am Yisrael. Finally, Moshe speaks of the time when “you will return and heed Hashem's voice, and perform all His commands” (30:8). Thereupon, Hashem will bless the people with great material prosperity (30:9). The Or Ha'haim explains that Moshe refers to three different aspects of the Teshuba process. The first is a return to Torah study, as the verse states, “Ve'shamata Be'kolo” – “and heed His voice,” meaning, listening to what Hashem communicates to us through the Torah. The Or Ha'haim cites the prophecy of Yirmiyahu (9:11-12) in which G-d says that the Land of Israel was destroyed “because they abandoned My Torah” (“Al Ozbam Et Torati”) – meaning, the people stopped learning Torah. Hence, as the Or Ha'haim brings from the Zohar (vol. 3, 270a), the Jewish People's redemption from exile depends on their commitment to Torah study. Therefore, Moshe assures the people that in response to the first stage of their process of repentance – their study of Torah – G-d will bring them back from exile. The second stage of the nation's repentance, the Or Ha'haim explains, is the “circumcision” of the people's hearts – referring to their refraining from sinful behaviors. The metaphor of “circumcision” describes the elimination of evil tendencies and desires. Refraining from forbidden conduct is rewarded with G-d's punishing the enemy nations who cause us harm. The third and final stage of the process is “you will return and heed Hashem's voice” – referring to the performance of the Misvot Aseh (affirmative commands). After committing to refrain from forbidden conduct, the people will then commit to perform the Misvot, to proactively serve G-d to the best of their ability, pursuing Misva opportunities. This will be rewarded with material blessings. As we prepare for the new year, as we introspect and seek to grow and improve, we must not forget the vital role of Torah learning in this process. For good reason, the Or Ha'haim understood Moshe's comments as indicating that Torah learning constitutes the first stage of Teshuba. In order to grow in our observance, we must open our minds and listen to what Hashem tells us to do. If we do not acknowledge that we have a great deal left to learn, that there is so much that we still do not know, we cannot possibly hope to change. The first critical stage of the growth process is Torah learning, immersing ourselves in the sacred texts and the teachings of our Sages to listen to what Hashem expects of us, what our obligations are, and how we are to live our lives. Only once we commit to learning and understanding Hashem's will can we then proceed to begin working towards fulfilling it.

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

Women have a special connection to Chanukah. The Shulhan Aruch (siman 670) brings down a custom that women do not engage in melacha activity while the Chanukah candles are burning. This refers to the first half hour after lighting, which is the primary misva. This minhag is also quoted by the Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909) in parashat Vayeishev, Hacham Ovadia and Hacham Ben Sion Abba Shaul (Israel, 1923-1998). The primary melacha that should be refrained from is laundry. This includes drying the laundry, weaving, sewing and needlepoint. It is permissible for women to bake, cook and fry. Washing dishes is also permissible. Furthermore, Hacham Ovadia writes in Chazon Ovadia that it is permissible for them to write during the half hour period. Hacham Ben Sion was asked whether women are allowed to activate a washing machine during the first half hour. He tends to be lenient, but then he writes that since the custom applies for only one half hour, it is better to refrain.According to the Mishna Berura (Rav Yisrael Meir Kagan of Radin, 1839-1933), the reason for the custom is to prevent women from using the light of the candles, which is prohibited. Refraining from melacha serves as a reminder to abstain from their light. The Ben Ish Hai presents a different reason according to the Kabballah. Rav Haim Palachi (Turkey, 1788-1869) cites a different custom, according to which, women were careful not to work the entire first and eighth day of Chanukah. Hacham Ben Senyar, in his sefer Ner Sion (Ch.3, Halacha 29), writes that women should wear special clothes on Chanukah, like they wear on Rosh Hodesh and Purim. He adds that if they have gold jewelry, they should wear it during these days. Obviously, women must still be careful about the laws of modesty when dressing up. He cites the Pele Yoetz who promises that a woman who is careful about modesty merits to have upright and holy children, and will reach a ripe old age in health and happiness. Finally, the Ben Ish Hai brings down a minhag told to him by Rav Eliyahu Mani: It was a custom of women, if, G-d forbid, they found themselves in a dangerous situation, to vow to refrain from melacha on Chanukah for one or two days; and in that merit they should get saved from harm. This clearly still applies today. SUMMARY:1. The custom is for women to refrain from doing laundry during the first half hour after candle lighting for all eight days of Chanukah.2. It is permissible for women to cook and write during this period.3. It is appropriate for women to wear nice clothing and jewelry during Chanukah, within the guidelines of modesty.

Married Orthodox Christians are constantly bombarded with misinformation regarding sexual relations in marriage. Mass media and entertainment, the internet, social networks and the educational system tirelessly wage war on the institution of marriage while promoting sexual immorality. Yet frequently when these confused and suffering married Christians turn to the clergy and even the saints of the Orthodox Church for guidance, here too they find conflicting opinions. What are they to do?In this talk Father Kosmas explains that the main reason for this confusion is that evil spirits are always striving to distort God's creation, including marriage and sexual relations. The result is an improper attitude toward marital relations, sexual pleasure and sexual abstinence, and a misunderstanding of monasticism, virginity and chastity. He emphasizes that to understand the Church's teaching on marriage and sexual relations one must study all aspects of it, and not focus only on the few saints, elders and clergymen whose views on the topic are contrary to the consensus of the Church. The following questions are also discussed: if marital relations are not sinful, why must Christians refrain from them on certain days? What did a saint mean when he said that even a married woman can still be considered a true virgin? What happened when a deacon stopped having marital relations with his beautiful wife for the sake of praise? Why did some saints say that marital relations are sinful while others said they are not? What dangers threaten those who abstain from marital relations beyond their abilities during the fasts?Other points covered in this talk include: the Church's condemnation of those who taught that the pleasure associated with drinking wine, eating meat, and having marital relations is evil; why certain monastic saints have felt compelled to speak on this delicate topic; the tragic example of a spiritual father who encouraged a married couple to live as brother and sister; and how the undiscerning reading of monastic books can cause many problems in a marriage.Duration: 4hrs Visit our website: www.OrthodoxTalks.com
