In this episode Bunny chats to Craig Sams and Jo Fairley in their town garden. Craig and Jo have set up several successful businesses both together and separately, including The Beauty Bible, Whole Earth Foods, Green & Black's, Carbon Gold and The Perfume Society. Craig has been chairman and held other positions for the Soil Association too. Both are keen organic gardeners and foodies. They have an old walled garden in Hastings that looks out to the sea. Jo successfully uses strong contrasting colours – reminiscent of their Green & Black's packaging, in their house and garden. They have a huge lemon verbena ( Aloysia citrodora) tree, around 3m high and wide with a mature woody trunk, a stunning olive tree which Jo used to woo Sam, and which moved house with them from London. There are also Echiums, Pittosporums and other more tender plants.
The usual format of The 17 podcast is to focus each episode on one of the UN's 17 SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) but the next two episodes are different. They will feature Sustainability Pioneers - the experts, thought-leaders and innovators who have shaped sustainability up to the present day, and will address the challenges of the future. In this Pioneers episode we talk to:Mike Berner-Lee, an expert on carbon footprints and net zero and a globally-respected expert on the changes needed at a global systemic level to protect the future of the planet.Jo Fairley, one of the leaders of the Fairtrade movement, who, as co-Founder of Green & Black's chocolate, changed the game in terms of business being done in a sustainable way.John Elkington, often referred to as a founding father of sustainability, he pretty much coined the term and has written many influential books grappling with a path through the competing pressures of economic thriving and environmental responsibility.Asking the questions are Kate Hutchinson and Lella Halloum. These interviews were recorded at Yorkshire Sustainability Week 2023. The 17 is a podcast themed around the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals. A new episode is published on the 17th of each month, and explores a different one of the 17 goals in detail. The UN SDGs represent an all-encompassing plan to protect the future of our planet, it is our responsibility to know what they are, understand them, and make sure that we are doing our bit to help.We are a new podcast and keen to grow. One of the most challenging aspects is knowing when the right time is to seek investment for your company. If too early your business may not be ready, however, if too late you may slow down its growth potential. In this episode, I speak with Jo Fairley, co-founder of the renowned chocolate company Green & Blacks. Jo co-founded the business in 1991 with her partner, Craig Sams, to create the world's first organic chocolate and the UK's first Fairtrade-marked product. In recognition of her entrepreneurial talent, Jo received an Honorary Doctorate in Business Studies from Kingston University. Jo is one of the UK's leading female entrepreneurs and has been an inspiration to me throughout my whole career, originally in PR and now as someone who has started a business, so I was thrilled to speak to her about her investment experience and hear her advice on key considerations around the timing of raising investment. Jo's advice: If your business grows quickly you may find your cash flow restricted so you will need investmentIf you are lucky, you may be able to play one potential investor off against anotherAvoid being in a situation where you are tempted to take the ‘wrong money' because you are under pressureYou may need to keep your day job to finance growthBe prepared for investors to want to investigate every area of your business: your contracts, your financial details, your social media history - they will want to see every detailFinding the right investor can be a full-time jobYou must decide how much equity to give away; keep this as minimal as possibleBe aware that with an investor, you lose power and autonomyConsider crowd-funding as a source of revenue, rather than finding a single investorBe mentally fit for this challenge - your well-being is vital for your whole businessFF&M enables you to own your own PR. Jo Fairley is the mind and intuitive force behind the pioneering and industry-defining organic chocolate, Green & Blacks. Due to a failed crop of peanuts that her husband, Craig Sams, was unable to use for his world-famous Whole Earth peanut butter, they were introduced to a crop of cocoa beans that Jo had the initiative to recognise as something extremely special. From that, she decided to put every penny from her flat sale into the founding of Green & Blacks, and in this episode, we speak about that journey that changed the planet, her life in the world of business, and how that tied so beautifully into wellness and sustainability (and we talk a lot about chocolate!) A pioneer of the fair trade and organic food movement, Jo Fairley launched Green and Black's with the simple premise, that if she loved the product, then others would too. Despite being told the UK consumer ‘will never eat dark chocolate’ Green & Black's fast became the benchmark in 'quality' as well as forging the way in an emerging organic food movement. Recorded in front of a live audience under the high vaulted ceiling of St Wilfred's in Harrogate, Jo joins Holly on stage to chart her career and guiding business principles. A serial entrepreneur, Jo started her career in publishing, before co-founding Green & Black's and now an organic and natural food store, Health & Wellbeing Centre and The Perfume Society. In this episode you’ll hear how business highs and lows can define your take on the world. This is especially true for Jo whose moral compass shines through and has been her guiding light throughout her business and personal journey. From tips and tricks to capture the attention of a journalist, to the challenges of cash flow and how best to (not!) spend an advertising budget - Jo Fairley’s insight is invaluable whether you're just starting out on your journey or looking to move in new directions. You’d think that mums who are bold enough to set up business from home while also looking after the children and all that goes with would be admired and respected for their choices. But of course we live in a labels world now and apparently the incredibly patronising term ‘mumpreneur’ is increasingly in use - and it's putting people off. Part of the problem of course is that you would never hear the equivalent ‘Dadpreneur’. But should this put you off starting a new business from your kitchen table? Christy caught up with Jo Fairley – founder of Green and Black’s chocolate – to find out what’s really wrong with terms like this. And if you’re on a mission this New Year to start a New Venture, don’t be put off - she has some great advice from MoneyCorp to help break through some of those business barriers.

This week Maria’s guest on the show is Josephine Fairley. Having been the UK's youngest ever magazine editor in her twenties, Jo Fairley co-founded Green and Black's in 1991 with her husband Craig Sams, now a one hundred million pound a year brand under the umbrella of Mondalez. Passionate since her teenage years about clean, green living she continues to work as an ambassador for Green and Blacks while also acting as a consultant to brands that are seeking increasingly to become more ethical, sustainable and to embody stronger values. A serial entrepreneur, she has translated her lifelong interest in the senses into a series of successful ventures, Judges Bakery and the Wellington Centre in her hometown of Hastings, and the Perfume Society, the world's first networking organisation for those interested in the sense of smell. Author of twenty-five books, she has contributed to a wide range of publications including The Times, YOU Magazine, Mail on Sunday, Red, Psychologies, and more.
