ESG Picks. Great Corporate Citizens This annual ranking, though they're Canadian companies, could be of interest to ethical and sustainable investors everywhere. The following descriptive article is titled Canada's Best 50 corporate citizens of 2022 continue to conquer the markets. It's by the renowned Corporate Knights group and found on their website with this commentary by Toby Heaps. Here are some quotes from Mr. Heaps. “Twenty years ago, Corporate Knights launched its quest for a more humane form of capitalism, placing people and planet ahead of profits, with the Best 50 Corporate Citizens sitting at the head of the roundtable to make business a force for good. A lot has changed for the better in that time and a lot hasn't. Thankfully, the glass ceilings in Canada's corporate boardrooms have been breached, with non-male members now making up almost a third of directors, double their one-sixth share in 2002… Racial diversity on large corporate boards has also improved: 9% of members are now non-white, double the 4% level in 2011, when we first started tracking this metric… While one workplace fatality is too many, it is encouraging that on a national level, a third less people died on the job in 2019 than was the case in 2002… Over the last two decades, corporate profits have doubled, workers have been left behind and emissions have stalled, but the Best 50 firms are leading the way with 50% more gender diversity and triple the investments aligned with the clean economy… The Best Corporate Citizens' stock market performance has outperformed its peers earning 499% gross return since it was first launched in June 2002, versus 366% for S&P/TSX Composite.” End quotes. Incidentally, the top three companies in the ranking are Hydro-Quebec, Innergex Renewable Energy Inc. (INE.TO), and Brookfield Renewable Partners LP (NYSE: BEP). Go to this podcast's webpage for a great statistical table titled… The 2022 Best 50 Corporate Citizens vs. the rest* Indicator 2022 Best 50 Average Large Canadian Company (minus Best 50) CEO–Average Worker Pay Ratio 74:1 160:1 Board Gender Diversity 36.7% 23.3% Executive Gender Diversity 26.6% 13.1% Board Racial Diversity 8.8% 8.2% Executive Racial Diversity 12.0% 6.6% Cash Taxes Paid (% of EBITDA) 11.6% 8.9% **Clean Revenue (% Total Revenue) 36.8% 6.2% **Clean Investment (% Total Investment) 33.8% 12.7% Carbon Productivity ($ sales/tonnes GHGs) $1,517,909 $641,183 *Large Canadian companies (with more than $1b in annual revenue) excluding the Best 50 **Based on Corporate Knights' Clean Taxonomy ------------------------------------------------------------- 3. ESG Picks. Great Corporate Citizens It seems in every podcast I have an article and recommendation from Matthew DiLallo from fool.com! His latest article is titled This Renewable Energy Giant Sees Even More Powerful Growth Ahead. Here are quotes from Mr. DiLallo's article. “NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE) is already growing faster than most utilities, powered by its focus on clean energy… That high-powered growth could enable NextEra Energy to continue generating market-crushing total returns for investors… The company raised its 2022 and 2023 earnings ranges by $0.05 per share, while boosting 2024's forecast by $0.10 per share. Meanwhile, it sees 2025 earnings growing by 6% to 8% off 2024's higher base. This updated forecast would see the company expand its adjusted earnings per share at a 9.8% annual rate from 2021 to the high end of 2025's forecast range… Several factors are helping power that growth. The company plans to significantly increase its core wind, solar, and storage business, expand beyond the power sector, and grow its already large-scale transmission business to help support the decarbonization of the U.S. economy… In addition, the company expects to build a leading regulated water business… NextEra Energy also unveiled its Real Zero plan to eliminate all the carbon emissions across its businesses no later than 2045 without the help of carbon offset credits… NextEra Energy has proven that going green can generate some serious green for its investors… That makes it a great stock to buy and hold for the long haul because it can potentially deliver massive returns as it leads the way in decarbonizing the U.S. economy.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- 4. ESG Picks. Great Corporate Citizens Now income from investments is particularly important for those who need cash flow in their daily living. So, this next article will interest those investors. It's titled Looking for Passive Income? This Renewable Energy Company Is a Great Way to Go. It's by Rekha Khandelwal, also on fool.com. Here's some of what Ms. Khandelwal writes. “At current share prices, Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure (AY) offers a dividend yield of 5.6%... Utilities focused on renewable energy offer a great way to generate regular dividend income… Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure owns over 2 gigawatts of renewable electricity generation assets, roughly 72% of which are solar. Renewable power generation is expected to contribute around 70% of the company's cash available for distribution (CAFD) from 2022 to 2026. Atlantica also generates power using natural gas. The company expects its efficient natural gas and heat segment to contribute 15% of its cash available for distribution from 2022 to 2026. Transmission lines are expected to contribute 12%, and its water desalination assets are expected to contribute 3%.  The biggest positives for Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure as an investment are its stable and predictable long-term cash flows. At the end of 2021, the weighted average remaining term of agreements for the company's assets was 15 years. All of its revenue comes from contracted or regulated assets… Its assets are also geographically diversified, with 46% of its cash available for distribution coming from North America, 31% from Europe, and 15% from South America. Protection from inflation Rising interest rates are impacting the stock prices of companies in capital-intensive businesses. But the interest rates on 93% of Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure's project debt are either fixed or hedged… Similarly, the company has escalation factors included in its contracts to protect it from inflation… Management is targeting cash available for distribution per share growth of 5% to 8% through 2025… In short, Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure is a top renewables stock that can generate passive income for shareholders in the decades to come.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- 5. ESG Picks. Great Corporate Citizens This next article is by Joel Makower of GreenBiz.com, a well-known and highly respected figure in sustainable business. It's not a direct stock recommendation but rather is here as a stock that some of you might want to look at. The title of the article is In Brazil, Suzano harvests trees with deep roots in communities (BOVESPA: SUZB3). Here's some of what Mr. Makower writes. “What if the company had planted those trees years earlier, on degraded land that's now been revitalized? And if it then planted millions more trees where the cut ones used to be — all to be harvested years later and replaced by yet more trees? And it did this for multiple generations in partnership with local and Indigenous communities? Can that company be deemed sustainable? These are among the questions I pondered last week during my visit to São Paulo, Brazil. I was there as the guest of Suzano — a 98-year-old pulp and paper company, the largest in Latin America and one of the 10 largest in the world — to help host its annual ESG Call, an online event during which the company showcased its achievements and challenges to a global audience of investors, customers, activists and others. (I was paid for this work, but not for this article.)… Suzano, founded in 1924 by Ukrainian immigrant Leon Feffer, pioneered the production of pulp and paper from eucalyptus as an alternative to pine. It invested in research and development — in the 1980s, for example, it began to apply biotechnology, adopting micropropagation practices in its plantations — and in sustainability measures, including the creation in 1999 of the nonprofit Ecofuturo Institute (Portuguese), with a focus on ‘socio-environmental responsibility…' Social studies I was impressed by the environmental aspects of Suzano's operations, which have been informed by such global sustainability thinkers as John Elkington, Pavan Sukhdev and the late Tom Lovejoy… The company has a longstanding rural development program in which it teaches communities how to make the best use of their land by producing high-value crops and helping them transform those crops into finished goods that go into local and global markets. For example, it supports honey producers and beekeepers in placing their hives inside Suzano's eucalyptus plantations, which has the added benefit of reducing poaching by people afraid of bee stings. Among other things, there is a history of distrust to overcome. A few years ago, for example, activists in the northern state of Maranhao claimed Suzano had behaved badly, stealing land from traditional communities, displacing families and making livelihoods untenable. Suzano disputes these claims… Walter Schalka, the CEO, struck me as earnest as any business leader about the company's social — and environmental — commitments. ‘Not everything that we are doing is perfect,' he said. ‘But we are humble enough to bring the problems to the table and try to address how we are going to build the action plan to the future.'” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- Other Honorable Mentions – not in any order, links on this podcast's webpage 1) Title Introducing the three largest ESG ETFs found on Trackinsight.com. John Elkington is an advisor on sustainable development and corporate responsibility, an area he's been working in for almost 40 years. He is the author of 20 books on this topic, and he has given a remarkable contribution to shifting capitalism and business towards a more balanced and sustainable path. We talk about his new book called "Green Swans: The Coming Boom in Regenerative Capitalism," we also talk about wicked and super wicked problems, exponentials, why he reads Chinese science fiction books, his visit with past guest Kevin Kelley and what he's both terrified of and excited about in the coming ten to fifteen year.  What is Covered:  - Who or what are ‘green swans' and where the idea came from  - Human struggle with exponentials and the role of technology in systemic change - Wicked and super wicked problems, and what is unique about them in today's world - The issues with discounted cash flow in today's economy  - The role of young generation and why we need intergenerational cooperation to solve existential threats we're facing Key Takeaways and Learnings:  - The green swans are very often market or societal or political shifts. A company or an individual could play into those changing realities, but it's not about individuals as such. - Super wicked problems, such as the climate emergency, make us see our future ahead of us, but we seem to be completely unable as a political species to address the challenge in a sufficient scale and with sufficient urgency.  - Reengaging young people in a multigenerational and intergenerational battle for a systemic change at the right time and in the right way is a major opportunity in the next 10 to 15 years Links and Resources Mentioned in This Episode:  - “Green Swans: The Coming Book in Regenerative Capitalism” by John Elkington https://www.amazon.com/Green-Swans-Coming-Regenerative-Capitalism-ebook/dp/B086BJF1FQ/  - Volans Ventures https://volans.com/  - Connect with John Elkington by email, LinkedIn or Twitter - “The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable” by Nassim Nicholas Taleb https://www.amazon.com/Black-Swan-Improbable-Robustness-Fragility/dp/081297381X/  - UN Sustainable Development Goals https://sdgs.un.org/goals  - “Exponential: How to Bridge the Gap Between Technology and Society” by Azeem Azhar https://www.amazon.com/Exponential-Bridge-Between-Technology-Society/dp/B094DK3NG7/   - “New Rules for the New Economy: 10 Radical Strategies for a Connected World” by Kevin Kelly https://www.amazon.com/New-Rules-Economy-Strategies-Connected/dp/014028060X/  - “Out of Control: The New Biology of Machines, Social Systems and the Economic World” by Kevin Kelly https://www.amazon.com/Out-Control-Biology-Machines-Economic/dp/0201483408/   - “Ministry for the Future: A Novel” by Kim Stanley Robinson https://www.amazon.com/Ministry-Future-Kim-Stanley-Robinson/dp/0316300144/  - “The Structure of Scientific Revolutions” by Thomas S. Everyone wanted to speak to him and he was giving attention and advice to each one. In his closing note, he touched a few chords. It was inspiring and had a strong message as well. I saw the joy in his face when is saw the poster of the pink boat hanging in the networking area. In this episode, he shares a success story about Max Nicholson. In episode 106 of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast, we speak with Christoph Langwallner, Co-Founder & CEO of WhatIF Foods, on using degraded lands to innovate food we know and love.In 2018, 25 years after inventing the triple bottomline, Prof. John Elkington, recalled this “people, planet and profit” sustainability tool because he saw it delivering the wrong results. Since industrialisation begun, the agrifood industry has been designed to achieve the highest productivity. Today, it manufactures plenty of but empty calories, leaves land behind unproductive, and erodes the souls of communities. It inflicts pain rather than wellbeing.Chris believes it's time to stop believing that doing the same things a bit greener and a little more transparent is going to change the world. It will not! "What we need are disruptive ideas and not just the next plant-based brand, or a trendy vegan product, neither a high-tech dream." - Christoph Langwallner, Co-Founder & CEO of WhatIF FoodsTherefore, it is no longer about sustaining - it is about restoring."I believe we need to reinvent the food industry category by category. We need to make food based on regenerative principles. Food that replenishes the nutrients we need. Food that is made with regenerative crops and we need to reconnect with nature and communities to rebuild our relationships. We need nature in cities, life in food, and purpose in communities." - Christoph Langwallner, Co-Founder & CEO of WhatIF FoodsIn 2015, Chris and four more experienced scientists and executives in the food industry, had enough. They spent careers formulating and marketing ‘food' for big companies and were very good at their jobs. However, they were conflicted. The ‘food' they were helping produce wasn't really… food.To make their ex-bosses happy, they had to make ‘food' with the bottom-line as the top priority. This meant adding artificial additives for more visual stimulation or adding a bit more flavour enhancer to make the food just a little bit more addicting. Refined sugars and refined oils, in particular, are very successful at driving demand."That is why so much of the food options you see are sugar and oil packed, calorie-dense, and full of additives. But they are empty of nutrients. Absolutely rubbish in terms of nutrition. This isn't ‘food'!?!" - Christoph Langwallner, Co-Founder & CEO of WhatIF FoodsSome unreal statistics:We produce enough calories for 10 billion people yet every 6 seconds we lose forests the size of a football field.Seven people out of ten suffer from what they eat and eating too much kills three times more people than famine.Listen to more Causeartist podcasts here.Check out:ImpactInvestor.io - Discover impact investors from around the world.Podcast Made with TransistorPodcast cover design Made with CanvaBuild amazing web platforms with Webflow

My guest this week has been recognised world-over for five decades as one of the world's most influential lifestyle experts, predicting and creating societal, business and consumer trends; initiating and promoting major events such as London Fashion Week and Green Consumer Week as well as advising major corporations including McDonalds, Tesco, HSBC and Next on women's engagement.   She is the creator of B.Hive, the world's first women's business club in partnership with Regus; was Chair of Viva women's radio and put on the UK's first women's festival, What Women Want and founded SEED, the women's leadership platform based on her global best-seller, The SEED Handbook, the feminine way to do business.  As well as having written several women’s leadership books she also ran her successful US-based new marketing agency, Globalfusion, in Los Angeles and San Francisco. In 2018, she received an OBE for her contribution to business, fashion and women’s empowerment. Please welcome my guest, social scientist Lynne Franks. Bio Throughout Lynne’s long and successful career, she has influenced awareness of many societal shifts and trends both in the UK and internationally. She positioned the UK as a world fashion leader by initiating London Fashion Week and the British Fashion Awards. Her wide breadth of influence in the business world includes developing McDonald’s UK women’s leadership network; working with Tesco on engaging their women customers through media partnerships; launching high fashion home shopping with NEXT and motivating the public towards responsible consumerism when advocating John Elkington’s trailblazing Green Consumer Week. Lynne also initiated a wide diversity of awareness campaigns for social causes including the creation of Fashion Cares, taken over by Mac Cosmetics to become the world’s biggest fundraiser for HIV/Aids, working with Amnesty International on global awareness of human rights through music and collaborating with Bob Geldof and Harvey Goldsmith on the production of Fashion Aid at the Albert Hall. She was a major UK advocate on the global situation regarding sexual violence to women and girls, working with her friend Eve Ensler to bring attention to women being used as weapons of war in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Lynne Franks chaired Viva, the UK’s first women’s radio station after selling her eponymous PR agency in the early 90’s and put-on What Women Want, the major festival at the South Bank in ’95, stimulating dialogue on the situation of women in the UK and beyond.  Lynne then attended the UN’s 4th largest women’s conference, held in summer ’95 in Beijing, where she worked as a radio journalist sending home the voices and issues of women worldwide. While living in California, she founded and ran the new marketing agency GlobalFusion, representing many consumer brands and retailers across the US from her offices in LA and San Francisco. Her books and workshops, including The SEED Handbook, published worldwide in 2000, pioneered a more feminine approach to business, combined with personal empowerment, inspiring thousands of women to join a movement of sustainable economic independence. Since establishing the SEED (Sustainable Enterprise and Empowerment Dynamics) women’s empowerment platform and body of learning materials, she has championed women’s leadership from post-war Bosnia, to rural South African villages and for women in prisons to women in the corporate boardroom. Lynne continues her journey, consulting, writing and speaking on societal shifts, women’s empowerment and a more sustainable, peaceful world for all. She has relocated to Somerset, where she has created the SEED Hub and SEED Eco-Store, developed her Power of Seven women’s leadership workshops and launched her on-line women’s leadership community, The SEED Hub Club. Lynne Franks was awarded an OBE for her services to business, fashion and women’s empowerment from the Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace in 2018. John Elkington has been at the forefront of environmental research, advocacy and writing since the 70’s. He launched a consulting company called SustainAbility, long before the term had become the buzzword that it is today. He’s a writer, a speaker, and a provocateur. A lot of his work has been in corporate sustainability, helping companies adapt and innovate amid environmental and social change. Plus, he written a new book, it’s called Green Swans. It riffs on the concept of Black Swans, popularized by Nassim Taleb. But instead of representing unexpected catastrophic events, Green Swans represent an opportunity, for positive change. In this episode, we discussed: • The seismic shifts occurring in 2020, and the prospects for the decade to be one of huge change, “The exponential decade”. • Why incumbent industries resist change, even when they can foresee their own demise. • The importance of government to legislate for clean-energy. • And the sad reality that government’s may need to pay big dollars to keep fossil fuels in the ground (akin to how the slave-trade was ended). • Change comes from the edge of systems, disruptors aren’t going to be found in big-multi-national companies. • Is the human brain capable of dealing with a challenge like climate change? Or should we use artificial intelligence to take-over where we have failed? • John’s early years, and how he quit economics to pursue environmental management. • His work in corporate sustainability, and his role as ‘the grit in the oyster’, to drive change in organisations, where there are incentives to stick with the status-quo. • The power of science-fiction to predict the future. And the rise of Chinese sci-fi as the most prescient looking-glass. Enjoy, and be sure to let me know your thoughts over at www.johntreadgold.com

In his book John introduces the concept of global ‘wicked problems’ (e.g. climate crisis or antibiotic resistant bugs) that can only be overcome with exponential alternative solutions. Regenerative energy generation can be one such ‘Green Swan’ response. Our conversation in this podcast looks at the aspects of responsibility, resilience, and regeneration, with John Elkington challenging managers to actively drive for what he calls ‘Green Swan’ scenarios. COVID-19 is an acute case of the ‘wicked problems’ described in his book and John is optimistic that in coming out of this crisis ‘Green Swan’ solutions will only gain more momentum in this arena.

Join in on the conversation around regenerative capitalism and if/how capitalism can be made regenerative by tweeting @volansjohn and @nori, and you will automatically be entered to win copy of John Elkington’s latest book, Green Swans: The Coming Boom in Regenerative Capitalism!   Most of us are familiar with Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s concept of a black swan: an unforeseen, adverse event with off-the-scale impact. But what if we were to flip this concept on its head? In his new book, John Elkington envisions a world where capitalism transforms to serve people and planet, where the black swan problems currently leading us to exponential breakdown are mitigated by green swan solutions taking us exponentially toward breakthrough.   John is an internationally recognized authority on corporate responsibility and sustainable development, bestselling author, and serial entrepreneur. He currently serves as Chief Pollinator at Volans, a future-focused business working at the intersection of the sustainability, entrepreneurship, and innovation movements. Today, John joins Ross and Paul to discuss his most recent book, Green Swans: The Coming Boom in Regenerative Capitalism, and explain how a green swan differs from a black swan event in its potential for an exponentially positive impact.   John goes on to discuss the idea of regenerative capitalism, explaining why he doesn’t trust incumbents to lead the movement, how we can approach new ventures with a regenerative mindset, and why he suggests transforming the current system rather than scrapping capitalism altogether. Listen in for John’s insight around the unintended consequences of implementing new technologies, and find out what green swans might arise out of the COVID-19 pandemic.   Key Takeaways   [2:52] What John is trying to communicate through Green Swans Black swan = unexpected event, exponential negative impact Raise question re: exponentially positive trajectories   [5:52] How John defines a gray swan and a white swan Gray swans have massive negative impact but were foreseen White swan = template for anything with exponential impact    [8:27] John’s concept of regenerative capitalism Social movements must engage with markets + business Reprogram key parts of system to build resilience   [11:17] The potential for oil and gas to lead the movement Fundamental distrust of incumbents in old economic orders Reptilian instincts, try to undermine opposition   [13:49] Why we shouldn’t just get rid of capitalism Market activity gone on for thousands of years Reform with government, regulatory involvement   [15:57] How to start new ventures with a regenerative mindset Leverage approach of B Corp movement Requires transformation of financial market   [22:19] How a regenerative focus might heal the political divide Potential for transfer of wealth from urban to rural Still dispossessed by tech (automotive, dairy industries)   [25:57] Nori’s potential role in establishing regenerative capitalism Evolving ecosystem of likeminded companies Operate as standard setter of what is regenerative   [30:08] What we need to know about Thomas Midgley  Chemist/engineer with patents for leaded gasoline, freons Single organism who did most damage to planet   [33:26] How to cultivate leaders who put the community’s needs first Reach out to people don’t understand, make uncomfortable Develop ability to listen for weak signals of change   [36:25] What green swans may arise out of COVID-19 Commitment to air quality, places to walk and cycle Universal basic income (has own unintended consequences)   Connect with Ross & Paul    Nori Nori on Facebook  Nori on Twitter Nori on Medium Nori on YouTube Nori on GitHub Nori on Patreon Nori Newsletter Email podcast@nori.com  Nori White Paper Subscribe on iTunes Carbon Removal Newsroom   Resources   John’s Website John on Twitter Volans John Elkington on RCC EP028 Green Swans: The Coming Boom in Regenerative Capitalism by John Elkington The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable by Nassim Nicholas Taleb Books by John Elkington People of the State of New York v. This is another initiative we have taken at ILA & Partners in partnership with Reuters Events by Thomson Reuters, to continue with our efforts to promote and scale Sustainable & Impact Investing.  We hope you enjoy it ! Introduction Despite progress in creating industry standards and frameworks to help clarify ESG data, individual methodologies for the incorporation within investment decision-making remains ambiguous. This issue is heightened by the evolving demands of increasingly active stakeholders. Communicating ESG to clients in unambiguous and relevant terms has become a priority for leading asset managers. Listen to this episode to gain an expert understanding of the biggest challenges and best practices in Sustainable & Impact Investing, including:  Setting the Scene & Sharing Preferred Strategies: How variance in defining ‘ESG’ leads to confusion and conflict between investment firms & investors, policymakers, clients and key stakeholders Internal Processes and Policies: How to integrate ESG into an investment company and gain an understanding of the common challenges and obstacles Improving Return Profile Through Building ESG into Your Models: How to integrate ESG factors into your models and decision process, across all portfolios and discuss what has worked best thus far, and where improvements can be made Data Sets as Part of the Investment Process: Understand which services and information are most useful and learn where to source and develop key information both externally and internally Communicating with Clients: How is ESG affecting the communication with your clients and the latest information clients are currently requesting Call to Action: What should investment firms/managers and clients do differently and the practical steps you can implement today to improve your ESG data analysis and communication Some quotes and highlights “The sustainable revolution is gaining momentum and it now represents the single greatest investment opportunity in all of history.” Al Gore, Generation IM “I believe we are on the edge of a significant capital reallocation of capital… And investors will need to fundamentally reassess portfolios because of sustainability issues.” Larry Fink, Chairman and CEO of Blackrock “The key to investing is not assessing how much an industry is going to affect society, or how much it will grow, but rather determining the competitive advantage of any given company and above all, the durability of that advantage.” - Warren Buffet “Every CEO needs to sit down and come to grips with the fact that if I don’t have teachers to teach the children of my employees, then the best employees aren’t going to come work for our company.” - Chuck Robbin, Chairman and CEO of Cisco Calls To Action:         1. As an equity fund manager, take a long terms perspective, choose the best companies in the world to go along even in this crisis.          2. Make demand use our influence as guardians of assets to ask where are the mitigations to existential threats that is surely coming down the line.           3. How are we using resources and having a net positive impact and to give back to the planet and people, more than which we are using.            4. Ask what are we doing with our investments and capital allocation, how are we getting the most of our resources long term than we are taking in the short term.              5. This is the most exciting opportunity we have ever been gifted to solve the world’s most challenging problem in a way that we can, and we get to be a part of it by funding these solutions. The first guest we ever had on this podcast, the former Wall St executive John Fullerton, made reference again this week to “John Elkington's product recall“ on a term he coined 25 years ago – ‘triple bottom line'. It reflects, he said, “the growing consensus that sustainability in business is not working. Instead, the chorus for systemic transformation is growing.” Our guest this week is Professor Karen O'Brien, and she has spent decades exploring and assisting people in just this. “Given the rate, magnitude and speed of the changes we need, let's go to the highest leverage point. What would that involve to actually loosen the constraints of a paradigm that is, in my view, killing us?”— Professor Karen O'Brien Karen is an internationally recognised thought leader on climate change impacts and social transformation. She has been heavily involved in the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (the IPCC), and shared in its 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. She's also on the scientific advisory board for Project Drawdown, and is the co-founder and partner in cCHANGE, an Oslo-based company that has become a beacon in the space of social transformation. Karen's work focuses on the relationships between personal, cultural, and systems transformations. She calls it exploring the most powerful solution to climate change – people! And she's decidedly positive about it, pointing out that projections of the future too often exclude the understanding that people constitute the systems and stories we live by. We are the systems. And we have the ability to transform ourselves (read, not others) – deliberately, consciously, deeply. And in everyday life, wherever we are. Karen wrote an article a few years ago titled ‘Is it time for a quantum leap?', on the emerging field of quantum social theory. And she sees her work on the ground with cCHANGE and cCHALLENGE bearing out the potential for just that. So how does conscious social transformation happen? How do we engage the highest leverage points? How do we take care of each other in the process? And can this really enable us to achieve the 1.5 degree Paris Agreement target? John’s Cannibals with Forks in 1997 popularised his ‘Triple Bottom Line’ concept (People, Planet, Profit) and laid the foundations for sustainable business strategy. We can learn a lot if we listen to the trees—and pay attention to the party going on underneath! Nature has much to say about how to realign our industrial value chains, embrace biodiversity, and maintain soil microbiology. The question is, are we smart enough to listen and move toward a regenerative economy?  Lorraine Smith is a writer and independent consultant who advocates for the shift to a regenerative economy. Lorraine has consulted for leading change-agents and large companies since 2004, and she is a sought-after speaker in the realm of sustainability and corporate innovation. Lorraine collaborates regularly with John Elkington’s team at Volans and sits on the Sustainability Advisory Board of Fibria, a large Brazilian forest products company. She also serves on the Board of Canadian Business for Social Responsibility and the Review Council of the Future Fit Business Benchmark. Lorraine is currently working on her first book, a series of essays exploring the relationship between people and trees. Today, Lorraine joins Ross, Christophe and Paul to share her ‘silver lining’ approach to environmentalism, explaining how a shift in the conversation can lead to true progress. She discusses her work with corporate boards, describing the value of understanding a company’s current circumstances and humbly checking your assumptions at the door. Lorraine offers insight around accelerating the rate of change and helping business think beyond emissions reduction to elevate the use of products that use CO2 as feedstock. Dave Stangis Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: Leading sustainability in large organizations Linking sustainability to business strategy Sustainability programs supporting an organization's purpose, vision and strategy How Campbell's is using technology to advance sustainability Advice and recommendations for sustainability leaders What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? I'll try to keep it to one. The one that I haven't mentioned is to really reach out and don't be afraid to network and ask questions of other leaders. You may not get a positive response from everybody, but we take care of our own in sustainability. It's still a fairly small circle. Look for some advice and learning outside of your sector. Don't just think you have to join food or automotive or travel or hospitality or in a government agency. I would try to reach out to somebody that's across the wall in terms of another sector and see what they can help with.  What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? I'm a fan of the life sciences as well as the technology. I grew up in Detroit, so I'm an automotive guy as well, but I think what is happening in the way we're able to deal with some of the systems out there, what is happening in terms of designing plans, people, whether it's good or bad, the ethics around some of these ethical lives, some of these technical choices and how we communicate them, help our companies understand them, and either bring consumers along or educate them enough so they can make an informed choice. I think this is really a big opportunity. That's where you're going to see kind of the old school sustainability people focused on energy and water and waste, which we always have to focus on, but some of these new sustainability people are bringing another layer of expertise to their companies or their agencies. What is one book you would recommend sustainability professionals read? I would recommend reading lots of books. I read a great book called the Inevitable by Kevin Kelly around technology coming to bear. I read A Crack in Creation: Gene Editing, a book that Jennifer Doudna wrote about gene editing and how it comes into play out with people and in plants. I'm reading a couple of books now on artificial intelligence and algorithms. I think there's a lot of stuff to just keep reading. Force yourself and pick up something that you're interested in and study a little bit. There's a lot of great books out there. Some of the books that I read early on were some of the work by John Elkington from sustainability. Some of those were ones that sent me on my path. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really helped you in the work that you do? I set up a lot of feeds that come to my computer and email every day. I follow a lot of different key topics and people on Twitter or Linkedin. It's really the feeds that I follow in their online newsletters. I sign up for a lot of things that compile news on topics I'm interested in. So I'll get hundreds of these newsletters every day. You just need to scan them for headlines and find stories that are interesting. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work they were leading at Campbell's? There's a few places I would suggest. The Campbell CSR websites just launched. Its www.campbellcsr.com. We also have a Campbell CSR Twitter account. There's a lot of good news stories and what we're doing on there. The team is also pretty active on Twitter and Linkedin as well. Just searching around for Campbell and Campbell Soup, Campbell CSR on Linkedin and Twitter. You'd be able to track down some of the teams that are working on sustainable agriculture and working on our core team and follow us there.
