Part 2 of a Memorial Song of the Soul for Bruce Hecksel, shared by his wife, Julie, including 5 more songs; most written, sung, and played by Bruce on the lead. Bruce and Julie have more than 20 recordings as Patchouli, and also under the name Terra Guitarra, on their label, Earthsign Records. Bruce passed on July 28, 2025, at the age of 57, following a three-year battle with cancer.
The more music you collect - digitally, physically or in a combination - the more you have to keep up with. And let's face it: Most of us aren't as organized as we'd like to be. So if you just keep accumulating music and the years keep rolling by, you can easily lose track of your collection and get disconnected from your memories. This week on "How We Heard It," your hosts take another dive into their collections and turn up near-forgotten acts ... and even completely forgotten acts (who even were those people?). This episode brings up everyone from Jethro Tull to Britney Spears, Mott the Hoople to Beck, Blondie to Radiohead and The Roches to Daft Punk. Meanwhile, the music your hosts found this week prompts impromptu conversations about how collectibles often just end up gathering dust, collaborations between stars can go terribly wrong, and tribute artists can sound better than the original artists. And what's up with all the "greatest hits" collections from one-hit wonders? If you haven't looked over your collection in a while, maybe it's time to take a nostalgia trip.
Today we bring you a Memorial Song of the Soul for Bruce Hecksel, shared by his wife, Julie. Bruce & Julie have more than 20 recordings, as Patchouli, and also under the name Terra Guitarra, on their label, Earthsign Records. Bruce passed on July 28, 2025, at the age of 57, following a three-year battle with cancer. Bruce is best-known for his amazing guitar work, though he also was skilled at piano, and sometimes played other instruments like drums and wood flutes.
We're rhapsodising about some of the incredible fragrances we've got ournoses on lately (and beautiful new stores we've discovered while out andabout) in this episode – so jam-packed with perfumes we're telling each otherabout that we'll have to do a Part Two to fit them all in. ArTEEtude. West Cork´s first Art, Fashion & Design Podcast by Detlef Schlich.
What begins as a simple sauna curiosity in West Cork slowly unfolds into a cultural and philosophical investigation. From ancient olive oil rituals in Greece and Egypt to the birth of the petroleum industry in 1859, oil has shaped human history in surprising ways. It illuminated ancient temples, powered the industrial revolution, lubricated machines, and today sits at the centre of global politics and energy conflicts. But Arteetude would not be Arteetude without a few unexpected detours.Along the way we encounter:• ancient athletes covering themselves in olive oil• the rise of the modern oil industry• the philosophy of friction and lubrication in civilization• the mysterious social dynamics of sauna culture• and one unforgettable culinary disaster involving Patchouli massage oil and breakfast eggsBetween humor and reflection, the episode explores how a single substance can connect ritual, technology, politics, memory, and everyday life. The episode closes with a thoughtful reflection on the hidden costs of oil in modern civilization and a gentle reminder that the energy systems we depend on shape the world far beyond our daily routines. And somewhere between philosophy, sauna steam, and storytelling…a simple drop of oil reveals the long and surprising story of human culture.Detlef Schlich is a rock musician, podcaster, visual artist, filmmaker, ritual designer, and media archaeologist based in West Cork. “If I hadn't have known that was Anthrax, I would have guessed it was Alice In Chains…” The early 90's was a strange time for metal, most notably due to the change in the musical landscape with the emergence of the Seattle scene and Alice In Chains becoming one of the key crossover bands to bridge the transition from thrash to the next wave of darker, grungier sounding heavy metal. “Every time you do that, I have a less chance of getting laid…” While ANTHRAX began the 90's with a much darker and angrier sound on Persistence of Time, the darkness and heaviness of their sound would become further amplified with the departure of Joey Belladonna and the addition of JOHN BUSH (formerly of Armored Saint) on vocals, resulting in a new era of Anthrax: BUSHTHRAX! With more grit and heft in the vocals than before, the JOHN BUSH ERA of ANTHRAX is definitely a different flavor than the band's output throughout the 80's with Joey Belladonna, and with the changing of the guard in the early 90's due to the growing popularity of the Seattle sound, the time was right for a slight alteration to the thrashier sounds of 80's era ThrashThrax, resulting in the darker, more aggressive BUSHTHRAX era that would follow for the next decade or so. “Alright, well it's not like we've never done that for you before…” Always remember that “springtime LSD is the best time for LSD” and that “it's not as fun for me when I push away”. Realize that “girls with Doc Martens are kinda cute (except for when they wear ‘patrouli')” and imagine what it'd be like “if we bled out of our dicks for a week” when you JOIN US for some 90's era ANTHRAX featuring JOHN BUSH, aka BUSHTHRAX!!! Hello my survivor friends…Thick, oily, toxic mist rises from a crack in the village center. The bone crushing coldness has caused the turf to dry and die. The earth below contracts and splits to reveal its deathly inner workings. All is cold and death. Yup, that's pretty much the way it is at my house too. Winter and darkness have rolled like an exhausting dystopian ghost over the land. What's new survivors? Today I'm going to talk about the Dean and Cordelia series and what we're doing next on the feed and I'll give you a fun book review I wrote for my new book club. I suspect I'm going to go a bit longer – so you might want to refresh your smokey old fashion with a shot of bourbon. Chris, Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Welcome. Patchouli invites you into your body—earthy, sensual, sovereign. It's time to celebrate Patchouli—one of my great loves and haloed essential oils in aromatherapy's pantheon, alongside other jewels such as Lavender and Frankincense. We begin by sinking into Yuliana Kireyeva's synesthetic composition, an auditory translation of Patchouli's aromatic chemistry, before sauntering into Lola Ridge's poem “Potpourri,” a sultry, aromatic remembrance of New Orleans [~ minute 8:00]. With your whole being steeped in Patchouli—body, breath, memory, and energy—I guide you through a “Boundary of Sovereign Light” visualization [~ minute 9:00], a ritual to awaken your luminous boundary, reclaim energetic clarity, and embody your sovereign radiance. Then words from the photographer Minor White unexpectedly resurfaced while I was recording the episode [~ minute 16:00].But wait, of course there's a seasonal theme to explore! Late summer into early autumn is Patchouli's season: the harvest time of boundaries, reflection, and the thinning veil between worlds. Rooted in humus-rich soil and shaded from the high-heat sun, Patchouli mirrors this liminal space—earthy, sensual, quietly abundant—and supports us in releasing tension, sinking into our bodies, and resting in our own stillness. In the final segment, I share my personal love affair with Patchouli—from adolescent memories of “bad Patchouli” incense to nurturing Patchouli plants in my garden. Its personality is evoked with words such as sweaty, animalic, wet compost, and “Kundalini at rest”, before going deeper into Patchouli's power to support self-acceptance, sensuality, sexuality and, yes, boundaries. Earlier this season we looked at Yarrow and Clary Sage, if Yarrow is a neutral shield and Clary sage is earthy euphoria, then Patchouli is our earth-bound body at-rest, a snake master of itself, able to settle into our true selves, unapologetically wear our own skin, and help us set clear boundaries between what is ours and what is not.
In this Scent 397 episode, balanced with nobility of Iris and depth of Patchouli, Chris is sporty spice and gives sass to british car watchers, Chrissy encourages you to get the 397 fragrance (includes Patuilli), Tim is the piercer enforcer pumper while Mental plans his Porsche 912 road trip like a poet on a bender—romantic, reckless, and always convinced that Interstate 5 will somehow reward poor decisions with good stories. Really we discuss ‘Tale of Woe,' and how breakdowns hit differently now versus when we were younger and broke. We reflect on lessons learned, offer practical advice for surviving a road trip with a hooptie. (Hint: Bring cash, carry AAA, and above all—expect the unexpected.) We balance that with your inputs and experiences. Listener shoutouts roll in, from celebrating National Stick Shift Day to a German word for when improvements go hilariously wrong: Verschlimmbesserung. There's praise for AAA, complaints about Boston drivers, and deep appreciation for the absurdity of breakdown stories. The highlight? Mental's epic California road trip story is broken into three seemingly unbelievable vignettes, each wilder than the last—Red Bull-can roadside repairs, getting hit on at a bar, and experiencing the surreal corporate bustle of a Morgan Hill Starbucks. Spoiler: all three stories are true.We even talk about our latest wild Racing Junk find—a 1989 Toyota Celica GTS Lemons racecar with a V6 swap, a pile of spare parts, and a sketchy-but-free enclosed trailer. We break down the value of 17 RS4 tires (most likely used) and debate the trailer's potential for hauling poor life choices. Mental dreams of acquiring it despite no truck to tow it. What is the interplay between aromatherapy, sensuality, and sexuality? This query started back in 2017, when I was curious why some essential oils are considered “aphrodisiacs” and how some are considered “hormone balancing”—realizing many essential oils influence both aspects. This episode goes there. How can essential oils like Patchouli, Vetiver, and Blue Lotus (Jasmine, Ylang ylang….) support holistic sensuality and sexuality while embracing the sacredness of being whole, undivided beings? We start by reflecting on the yin and yang within us all, the interconnectedness of our bodies and the universe, and the sacredness of creation as a gateway to divine knowing or gnosis. We continue into highlighting the power of scent as a form of deep communication, noting how odorants influence receptor sites in the body and can deeply connect us to ourselves and others. Sharing insights from poetry and philosophy, we weave together themes of respect, receptivity, and the importance of dispelling ego to embrace our sensual selves. Drawing inspiration from works like Rumi, E.E. Cummings, and Stephen Harold Buhner, we frame sensuality and sexuality as sacred and beautiful, celebrating the profound connection between scent, body, and spirit.Throughout the episode, we explore the role of essential oils in supporting sensuality and sexuality, highlighting favorites like Sandalwood, Patchouli, and Peru balsam for their grounding and nurturing qualities. This episode is a celebration of our fundamental core, encouraging us to embrace our bodies, imperfections and all, and to create moments of self-care, such as aromatic baths or massage oils, to connect with our sensual-sexual selves.Tune in for thought-provoking insights, poetry, and practical tips to integrate aromatherapy into your daily life. This episode offers a holistic approach to embracing our divine, sensual selves and connecting with the sacredness of being alive.Poems highlights: (Minute ~28) Rumi, “You that come to birth and bring the mysteries.”(Minute ~32) e.e. cummings, “Lady, I will touch you with my mind.”(Minute ~39) Stephen Harrod Buhner, “Semen is Latin for a dormant, fertilized plant ovum.”

We've got a cracking Listener Prescription special for you, and let us tell you, it's a real corker. You wouldn't believe the range of questions we receive, and this week's episode of On the Scent podcast really showcases the breadth of the people and feelings, places and personas that fragrance can conjure. From scenting an Irish adventure and matching the weather, to choosing a fragrance to wear for a loved one's funeral, and even creating a whole new perfume persona for reinvention – our listeners never fail to surprise us with their diverse and deeply touching requests. We're diving deep into how fragrance can comfort us during difficult times, enhance travel experiences, and even help us embody our most fabulous selves. It's a rollercoaster of emotions and scents, and we can't wait for you to join us on this olfactory journey. So, pop in those earbuds and let us guide you through our suggestions – and let us know any scents that spring to mind in answer, too! Here are the questions we answer & scents we suggest: For Ashley: @cloonkeen Báinín - Meaning 'little white', evokes the softness of ivory wool, embodying innocence and plushness in a timeless garment. A delightful blend of freshness and warmth, it carries hints of coastal gorse, dewy herbs, and petrichor after a cloudburst. (Named after the homespun wool used in Aran jumpers and tweed jackets worn by Irish fishermen for generations). @cloonkeen Roísín Dubh – A mystical Irish rose, Róisín Dubh blends Damascena rose with dry paper and inky patchouli. The scent deepens into smoky incense, black pepper and tobacco absolute, creating a brooding base.Named after a rebellious 16th-century song, Róisín Dubh has become a cherished symbol for Irish writers. @cloonkeen Castaña – A delectable haze of singed yet creamy chestnuts and golden caramel unfolds into a voluptuous blend of Haïtian vetiver, cardamom, and red pepper.Enriched by delicate cassia absolute and lush jasmine blossoms, it's a masterpiece. @laboratorioolfattivo Nun – Nun evokes the primordial waters of Ancient Egypt, symbolising rebirth and the Sun God. Waves of citrus and pear wash to a surging, luminous heart of lotus, jasmine, and ylang-ylang, worshipped by a woody, musky base. @memo.paris Irish Leather – Irish Leather blends a leather accord with the fresh essence of juniper berries and bitingly green mate. Featuring a fizz of pink pepper, herbaceous clary sage, iris & tonka on a smoked amber base, it pays homage to the Irish roots of Memo Paris' co-founder. @perfumerhlondon Rainwood – Capturing the essence of the (okay, Scottish) Highlands with grounded beauty, snapped stalks of galbanum and elemi coalesce with clean pepper and droplets of myrrh; all grounded by wet, woody juniper and cedar and patchouli leaves. For Becca Monet: Pocket-sized, calming and strengthening roll-on scents for wellbeing from @aromatherapyassociates, @neomwellbeing, @tisseranduk, or @marksandspencer. For Hannah (& ‘Glory Magnolia'!): @jovoymayfair @jovoyparis Psychédélique – A groovy time capsule, this scent struts its stuff with the swagger of a '70s rock god. Patchouli takes centre stage, belting out woody notes with the gusto of a Woodstock headliner. It's the olfactory equivalent of a vintage vinyl, crackling with retro charm and rebellious...

Welcome to another money and manifesting episode of the Money Lighthouse Podcast for Spiritual Entrepreneurs! I'm your host, Michel Ai Reavis, and I'm so grateful to have you with me today. In this episode, we're diving into the fascinating world of aromatherapy and exploring how essential oils can be powerful tools for reprogramming the subconscious mind, manifesting your desires, and building your soulful business. As I've delved deeper into the realms of manifesting, conscious creation, and the subconscious mind over the past few months, I've been reminded of the incredible connection between scent, memory, and emotion. Our sense of smell is directly linked to the parts of our brain that handle memories and feelings, meaning certain scents can instantly transport us to different times and places in our lives. This connection makes aromatherapy a potent tool for spiritual entrepreneurs looking to elevate their mindset and energy. Patchouli, derived from the leaves of a humble mint family herb, is a divisive scent known for its paradoxical effects. It can both stimulate and calm, making it suitable for various moods and situations. Beyond its association with 1960s counterculture, Patchouli holds magical properties, aiding in solitude and focus amidst chaos. It grounds users, fostering awareness of the body and sensual experiences, particularly in practices like yoga or meditation. Emotionally, it encourages confronting fears and clearing negativity. Patchouli embodies strength and clarity, supporting you on your life quest with conviction and endurance while connecting to divine inspiration and magical realms. It's a veritable Monster's Ball as the ladies crack open Y2K energy drinks, sniff cider scents, call in short kings, and debate the global high-end nail polish monopoly. Chloe shops her closet, Maddie falls back in love with her collection, and the ladies pay homage to a goth icon with the same name as a Costa Mesa mom. Want to smell like a girl who once was a woman? This Spotlight on Aromatherapy episode features my friend and co-host of the former Irreverent Aromatherapy podcast: Bekki Fishelson Kuber, founder of Blue Marble Botanicals. Get ready for a lot of laughter, irreverence and getting into hot- topics such as "this is good for that" and aromatherapy shower discs (bombs). Look forward delving into the following topics during our conversation: Tornado chasing (yes, for real!) How "Wellness from the Earth" is more than a tagline. Cures, ailments and how holistic aromatherapy may fit in. Stepping back from making therapeutic claims. Blending seasonally such as Bekki's Solstice blend with Frankincense, Myrrh and Blood Orange and loving it for what it is. Starting a business based on a passion: aromatherapy, "the world needs this!" Staying curious: featuring Amber "essential oil", making mistakes and learning from them. Ask questions: contact suppliers. Marguerite Maury and the "Individual Prescription", featuring Patchouli (shout out to: Spiritual Sky!) Soap Box topic: Aromatherapy candles ("there's no way there's Sandalwood oil in a candle!") The specialness of essential oils. Shop Local! Finding special suppliers such as Wild Root Acres. Yes, we go there again: the specialness of essential oils. Shower bombs & washable products with essentials oils: don't go there (essential oils down the drain!?)
