Sylvester Stallone is John J Rambo - a Vietnam vet who comes to find a fellow soldier only to find he's the last man alive. He comes to a small town where just on appearance he's rejected and things go from bad to worse very quickly. The skills he has make for a confrontation beyond the expectation of those against him. But underneath it all is an important message. Trev's seen it - he can't work out when, but this is a proper watch taking in all aspects of the movie thanks to Stephen's knowledge. Episode 15 - 1982 was a sleeper year for cinema with some of the most groundbreaking and genre-defining films being released. Sylvester Stallone stars in FIRST BLOOD, the action film that not only broke the mould but with its 2 sequels that were also released in the 80s went a long way to establishing the 80s as the decade of the action film. There is no doubt that John J Rambo is one of two life-changing roles that created the superstar that is Sylvester Stallone. Some actors work a whole career to find one iconic character to embody and Sly had two and played them simultaneously for the next 37 years. The Born to Watch team put their spin on this classic movie and surprised even themselves with some of the revelations they came to. FIRST BLOOD is a gripping action thriller that doesn't stop for its whole 97 minutes of running time. An out-and-out blockbuster upon release, it would go on to take over $100 million dollars and spawn 4 sequels, but it's this movie that stands the test of time and is the benchmark for the franchise. Starring Sylvester Stallone as John Rambo, a Vietnam War veteran. The movie was directed by Ted Kotcheff and is based on the novel written by David Morrell, it also stars Richard Crenna (Trautman) and Brian Dennehy (Teasle).First Blood is an excellent movie that highlights the struggles of veterans returning from war. Rambo is a sympathetic character who is simply trying to survive but is forced to fight back when pushed too far. This was a fun episode for the team as they attack an old favourite of theirs. Episode 69 is here (LOLZ), and this week, Liam and Rob look back at 1982's, First Blood. Or is that, Rambo: First Blood? Or...Surrounded? Wait, what? Some people know the movie as, 'Surrounded'? Apparently so. Well, whatever you know it as, Sly's first outing as the war machine, John J Rambo is often a million miles away from the 80s super hero he became just two years later. Make no mistake, First Blood might have been released in the 80s, but this movie is a product of 70s cinema and storytelling.

This is the first week of Rambo Month! The world recognized month of John J. Rambo is being celebrated on A Fag On Film by watching all of the films. This 1982 classic really is something to go back and watch, even if action films aren't your thing. A lot more than a normal shoot 'em up. Hope you all enjoy and thank you for listening!
The Pint Movie Invitational returns to the first man to be an invitee. Andrew Morgan, host of the Nomcast, a great podcast and good friend of ours returns. Will he bring a heady thriller like he did the first time with Memento? Easy answer is no. But he does bring a trailblazing film that introduced the world to one Mr. John J. Rambo. That's right, we draw First Blood on this episode of The Pint! Have a great time as we laugh our way through a film essentially about PTSD. Yeesh.
JOHN J. RAMBO - Looking Back on an American Icon On this week's episode of WatchThis W/RickRamos Ramos flies solo with a look at Sylvester Stallone's second most iconic role - John J. Rambo. A staple of the 1980s, Rambo is a problematic example of American Screen Heroism. From David Morrell's source novel First Blood, the Rambo character started as a confused and damaged Vietnam veteran pushed too far and forced to take revenge on a small-town. The series would begin in 1982 with First Blood and continue with Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985), Rambo III (1988), Rambo (2008), and - the supposed finale - Rambo: Last Blood (2019). Claims of simplicity, colonialism, jingoism, and ridiculously over-the-top violence have been a constant label on this series. This episode looks at the memories, problems, and overall quality of this series. We hope you enjoy it. Questions, Comments, Complaints, & Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. As always - Thank You.
Just in time for the 5th installment of the franchise, Pasty and Ashes are here to talk about John J. Rambo! They discuss how the character went from a proxy for the treatment of Vietnam Veterans and cast a spotlight on the suffering they underwent after returning from the war to the almost cartoonish superhuman murder machine he turned into as quickly as the second film. They also discuss the political climates that influenced each film, their anniversary adventures getting tattoos and more! All this plus Patsy reimagining John Travolta as Rambo (which almost happened) on this week's episode!
Nothing is over for the GenreCast as we're still talking movies and analysis. This week, in honor of the newly released Last Blood, we go back to 1982 and discuss Sly's initial run as John J. Rambo, First Blood. Cementing himself as an action icon, Stallone tied a homemade bandana around his head and went to war with a small town sheriff in an adaptation of the novel of the same name. John Rambo is a marker for masculinity and action heroes. We break open the idea of cinematic masculinity, the production of First Blood and the cycle of franchising. The topics of veterans and Vietnam pop up before moving into a discussion of police brutality. Join us as we talk all things First Blood.

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, William Thrasher, Jersey Jason, and guest David Morrell (author of the novel First Blood) discuss First Blood, the original Rambo movie. John J. Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) tries to hitch a ride to Portland, Oregon, but is instead thrown in jail by Sheriff William Teasle. Fueled by PTSD, Rambo escapes with his fighting instinct on high alert. His former mentor Colonel Samuel Trautman (Richard Crenna) is called in to bring him down. Playing more as a straight drama until the action starts, First Blood is the opposite of what most expect from the Rambo series. Stallone garners a good deal of sympathy for the lead character, particularly in a memorable monologue near the end. Jerry Goldsmith's score is both mournful and exciting at times. The end credits vocal theme "It's a Long Road" performed by Dan Hill is cornball, but the lyrics fit the theme of the story. The Fools explore the wonderful world of John J. Rambo, terrorist of the small town of Hope, Washington, in Sly's 1982 action adventure, First Blood.
20 years after Rambo "graced" the screen with his presence he is back and older than ever (though still quite ripped). But the Veteran still has a chip on his shoulder and he's not in the mood to be doing any good any time soon, especially for a group of Christian missioniaries. Join Corbin and Allen to find out their thoughts on possibly John J. Rambo's final outing.
For this week's Nostalgia Theater Podcast I discuss the Rambo phenomenon with author David Morrell, whose 1972 novel First Blood is where it all began. Despite its reputation for ultra-violence, the Rambo series, starring Sylvester Stallone as war-weary Vietnam vet John J. Rambo, is a fascinating artifact that lies at the intersection of the pop culture and politics of the 1980s. The franchise reignited discussion about the Vietnam conflict, and inserted itself into the political vernacular of the time (anyone remember Ronald Reagan quoting and comparing himself to Rambo?).In addition, it also sparked a mountain of tie-ins and merchandise, including (but certainly not limited to) a weekday afternoon cartoon show and a whole slew of action figures and accessories. Listen in as David Morrell discusses the origins of Rambo, what he thought of the various sequels (not to mention the cartoon show!), and how he feels now that Stallone has decided, as of a few weeks ago, to retire the character for good.
